TCCLs Are Back

TCCLs are back. If you don't know, you'd better ask somebody. The OGs on this blog will be more than happy to explain. In general, the more TCCLs, the better.

[Quick Update: Redskins Unrestricted has been filed -- see below. TCCLs commence on the jump]

1,160 TCCLS - Loseable Type. Man, at the risk of jinxing it and provoking some major malfunction, I think we're outta the dark ages. There's all these cool little features when I log in now. Like as of now it says there have been 1,160 entries on RI in the two years we've been doing this, with 101,047 comment. We tip our hats to you guys for all of that (And Nate, take heart, we'll never have to count comments again!).

666 TCCLs - Greg Blache. Dude was keeping it raw this week. I've said for years that the Skins DC is the best quote at Redskins Park, and after a two-year hiatus from the media I dare say the man is reclaiming his title. Equated the play of his defense last week to three-day old fish, then played the stripper card in likening falling in love with a rookie to falling for the denizens of the silver pole. Then denied having any actual first-hand knowledge of such experiences, putting it off on his "friends." Naughty, naughty ... But oh so true.

160/90 TCCLs - Zack Bolno. He's killing us slowly, and we like it. The schlub grub keeps coming. If anyone has a suggestion for a healthy alternative to Chick Fil-A, the Golden Arches, etc., please email me.

19-for-22 TCCLS - Coach Z (we need a better nickname for him. J-Z and Z-Man don't do it for me; we gotta be more original than that). I can not express how refreshing it is to have actual exchanges of ideas and conversations with a coach that do not involve extreme mental gymnastics to merely elicit a somewhat cogent output. I have no idea if this guy can bring the heat on Sundays or if he'll prove to be over his head, but I can speak for all the schlubs in expressing how enjoyable he has been to deal with. His candor and straightforward nature might not always play well with the players depending on how this season goes, but from our standpoint it's a beautiful thing. Ask a question; he answers the question.

He seems to have a firm sense of perspective on his job and his role in the organization, and realizes that ubber-secrecy hardly ensures victories. I would have to think Zorn's swagger and aggressive nature would rub off on his players. Again, not saying any of this will win more games, and my hunch is this team will struggle to finish above .500 in this year of transition, but people throughout Redskins Park are embracing his leadership style and what a stark departure this is from the past.

4-12 TCCLs - J-E-T-S. Thank you, thank you, thank you for bringing the Favre debacle to an end. Sure, it'll turn my stomach to have to write about it next week ahead of the preseason game at the Hoffalands, but then I'm done with it. The national fascination is over. We can all go back to our regularly scheduled lives.

-5 TCCLs - The Cult of Colt. It was one game people. No, actually, it was less than half of a preseason game, and the dreaded extra preseason game that no teams wants to play. I love his verve and spirit and all of that, but please, this is a marathon here. Let's not go crazy with comparisons and expectations. Again, talk to me in like November 2009 and we'll see if the kid can be a solid back-up. Was it just me or was it all Colt, all the time this week (I saw or heard him everywhere, through no impetus of his own, with the team putting him on the podium and a slew of schlubs putting him on TV and the radio. It's a nice story, but we're less than a chapter in and a little perspective is in order. (Also, it's kinda painful watching anyone in Heath Shuler's old number. Maybe someone can talk him into a new digit).

LEt me go on record as preferring to switch the Todd and the Colt tomorrow night. Let the Colt use his legs to save his hide, then have the Todd execute against the to-be-insurance-salesmen.
Because the drop from first string oline to five guys is the drop from Morton's to Five Guys.

JLC, if you think this Favre thing is over, you're nuts. Until he gets injured this year (and I'm betting he will), ESPN is going to beat this thing to death.

And I'll admit that I'm warming up to Zorn. At first I HATED this hire (I still love you, Russ Grimm!), but after seeing him in action and hearing the scuttlebutt (thanks Coach Thompson) surrounding him, he seems to be OK. Of course, check back with me once he actually loses a game...

How about calling Zorn "smooth jazz"? His initials are JAZ (James Arthur Zorn), and he does have a smooth demeanor about him...

By the way, does anyone else think it might be good karma that Zorn has the same first and middle name of our own James Arthur Monk?

"Jazz" from Brownwood's comment sounds best to me. I'm not sure about "smooth jazz", just "jazz".

Another suggestion: "West Coast Jim", as he's from the West Coast, and he's bringing that system to a pretty antiquated offense run by Gibbs.

Overall though Skinz is right, nicknames are for people who have complicated names with at least 2 syllables. Can't shorten 1 syllable.

As for his skill as a coach, check out this article from a Seattle paper
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/football/328887_hawk24.html
that talks about his approach to coaching, unique style, marks he left on developing QB's, and his honest straightforward way of talking.

I usually hearken back to Sally J's curry-comb comment right after the hire. "Curry-Comb" is a hell of a nickname, especially because it's pretty doggone weird.

Or to go really old school I can rep Zornoastrianism again, but that's really about us as his devotees more than the man himself.

And finally -- doing best imperious Terence Stamp impression -- kneel before Zorn!

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 8, 2008 1:26 PM | Report abuse

Didn't we go through the Zorn name thing right after he was chosen? Zorn to be Wild? Zorn Again? Zornography?

Jasno's got this thing about nick names. He keeps pushing them. Last summer it was "We need a nickname for Vinnie."

The think about nicknames is you can't have a contest. They have to occur in nature. Like the best one up here, "Jasno." That wasn't from a contest. Nate just called him that once and it stuck, like glue.

Someday, someone will call Zorn something and it will be the nickname. And Vinnie. Only it will be a different name for Vinnie.

There is a list of nicknames on the wiki:

colt is a LONG way from being a pro quarterback for sure...however professional media and 'tv' types are gaga about colt because he shows a confidence and swagger that jc doesn't around the media. he sells papers and is responsible for a large # of hits on internet blogs and search engines.

and oh by the way...he didn't throw an incomplete pass or an interception in his debut during the pre season. Unlike jc who had 9 incomplete passes and an interception against a panther team that didn't start a member of its 11 on either the defensive line or secondary. kind of like the colts!

We are always highly amused by this chap, Mr. Truth. We think that he is not Mr. Reality as he spins about in a world bordered by the Georgia Bulldogs and the Charlotte Bobcats.

But today he thinks he is Shaft, for a a 1971 American blaxploitation film. We recall that Mr. Shaft was a cunning man of action who who traveled through Harlem and to the Italian mob in order to find the missing daughter of a black mobster.

We do not find this anything like Mr. Truth, a lazy lump who sits at his computer blogging in the third person, trying to invent a life for himself, mourning the death of a dog, and awaiting the release of a video game and the first day of the college football season. But, perhaps we're missing something here, Mr. Truth? Would it be possible for you to resolve these contradictions for us?

Zorn doesn't need a nickname. However, his name may well become an adjective.

For example, a confusing movie with a strange ending no one expects, like the coaching searching. "That movie had a Zorn ending"

Or perhaps if Zorn succeeds as coach, people will refer to unexpected success as a "Zorn rising"

If Zorn flames out, it'll become a synonym for a job disaster, perhaps a "Zorn quake"

Of course, time will tell which of these Zorn-isms are in our future

Some funky numbers for you:

Portis: 84 games, 1710 carries, 7715 yds, 91.8 yds./g, 4.5 avg, 63 TD's

Tomlinson: 111 games, 2365 carries, 10, 650 yds, 95.9 yds./g, 4.5 avg, 115 TD's

Considering the amount of games and carries LT has over Portis, I'd say their overall averages puts them on par with each other. You can't fall into that national media jobbing that they give Tomlinson. Is he a better overall back than Portis? Yes. Are they so much different, or is Tomlinson leaps and bounds better than Portis, NO!

Posted by: Red of the DMV | August 8, 2008 11:16 AM

You're right, those are some funky numbers. Here are some numbers that don't smell as suspect:

Let's take CP's averages from 2004-2007 (the years he's actually been with the Skins) and compare them to LT's averages from the same years.

CP's per game averages over that span:
85.5 yds rushing, 0.6 TD, 2.5 rec, 18.7 rec yds

Now LT's:
96.6 yds rushing, 1.2 TD, 3.5 rec, 28.4 rec yds

So along with crushing CP in every categroy; now let's throw in a rushing title, a single season TD record, and an MVP for LT (none of which CP has).

I don't know what your definition of "leaps and bounds" are, but CP can carry LT's helmet any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Look, I don't dislike CP. He's a gamer and he's given us some solid seasons and I root for him when he's on the field. But he should be criticized when he whines about taking 10 carries in a preseason game and talks like a porcelain diva.

Hi I'm skippy and I have a metal Plate in my head. i live with my dead sister's twins and Mama and my cat named Mr. Whiskers IV. I really, REALLY like Lemon Meringue Pie.

Skippy hates to be cuticle of the otter posters, but believes this frivolicity need to stop.

Don't you bonehearts know there is a war going on? And no, Skippy does not mean the one in The iraq, such as, because that's just asking for truffles to disgust it here.

Skippy is talking about the fact that the Russians have invaded Georgia. As a proud US America Skippy doesn't plan to stand up and sit by while the former members of the Soviet Onion attack the land that gave us Wolf Bitzler, the Mucusal group R.A.M. and that ugly dog mascot, Leslie Uggams, IV. Also, if I'm not stood up correctly, the Georgia Bullfrogs is favorited to win the Hershey Trophy and maybe the BS trophy.

How can they do that with Russians in the state?

So everyone shut up, sign up and go to war Miss Lucy, because otherwise, we'll all be eating Borscht instead of Hush Puppies and ribs.

Fondly Until Regurgitation,

Skippy

Dude, I don't know if you were up here a few days ago, but someone made a good point about how Gibbs tried to run Portis like it was 88' all over again with his "run into a brick wall" running scheme. Denver has a different running scheme than what Coach Gibbs employed during his two stints in D.C. This is a MAJOR reason why you can throw a Cedric Benson or Cedric the Entertainer in that Denver backfield and still have em' generate 1K or more.

Lets just say that Portis and Tomlinson are good RB's who are better than most and be done with it. Surely you can agree with this, right?

With the Stock of Running backs so high, I propose that we tap some alternative resources, such as having the 2 punters play running back in a few games. I know that this will not solve our dependency on quality running backs, but its better than making sure all the players get Reebok pumps and are properly inflated.

Still Skippy with the latest US vs Russia WAR update.

Now Skippy knows there are Fallow Travellers and perhaps Fred Travelina on this Broad, because people are making mockery of the fact the Russians have invasioned the louvered 48 United States of America Ferrera. Apparently they snuck in through her Tierra del Fuego under cover of dankness. But that's neither here nor there. Nor over there. Or back there.

Firstly, Georgia Frontierre is still dead by poplar demand.

(B). Fidel Castro has resigned. But he has Brett Fark's agent, so he is expectorated to unretired and be traded to the New York Japs.

Turdly, Using a Doberman Pincher Effect the Russians in Georgia and the Cubans, headquartered at the Copacabana, will attach Fort Dix.

Fourth, Mark Cuban is trying to buy the Chicago Cubs. Coincidence? Skippy doesn't think so.

Excuse you, Skippy is picking up Radio Marti on his plate and will get back to you.

"run into a brick wall" running scheme.

In Gibbs 1.0 the brick wall was usually 5 to 10 yards from the line of scrimmage.

In Gibbs 2.0, not so much.

I'm not sure if this a question or a statement, but whatever it is, it sums up what I've been trying to say.

p1funk, if Portis goes out and gets 10 carries do you think this will be the limit of his contribution on the field? It SEEMS like you're thinking that's all he's going to do. Portis is probably THE best blocking RB in the league. Dude goes beyond the impossible and gives 110% every play. Call him soft or whatever, but I think it's nothing wrong if you want to save that 110% for when the games count.

What is happening here is what I call the Obama Effect. MCain tried to explain this in the ad with Britney and Paris, but that was a little extreme. But, this is truly the ‘Rockstar’ effect.

What we have here is a reporter who was tired of Gibbs 2.0 and the assumed secrecy of management and owner. He couldn’t get anyone to talk to him so his stories were always from the outside looking in (like the rest of us). That’s why he has to use sources such as the Janitor (his words not mine).

This dude is dissing a coach with 3 SBs Wins under his belt because some surfer dude is now our coach and he answers more questions openly because he’s never been in this situation before. I say all this needs to be tempered until the regular season. How do you know he’s not lying to you when he seems genuine? To me it’s just different styles. One isn’t better than the other.

Obama 1st appeared as a rock star, but once he keeps on talking and those talks include no substance he has began to fade and reality is starting to come back.

Zorn’s reality won’t hit until the regular season starts. Now, the 0-0 55 yr old rookie head coach is a true Rockstar who everyone wants to be, including LaCanfora. Me? I’m from Missouri so you gonna have to show me!

Also, I like Children of the Zorn...with all the talk of Monk and Green's induction to the HOF effectively closing the chapter on the glory days of Gibbs I, it would be fun to have a new collective name for Redskins fans (but I still hope the Hogettes keep their shtick going...no need to close the door *too* tightly).

Why a risk top RB against another teams rookie scrubs?

Two-a-days get you in "game shape", not fargin 10 plays in preseason game!!

Funny, in light of the "discussion" up above, that (unless my eyes deceive me) the still of Redskins Unrestricted which is displayed on the dormant video player features what appears to be a line of "running backs" doing a ball carrying drill, with Clinton Portis in front and Mike Sellers right behind him in line.

As if the coaches sometimes treat Mike, a fullback, like one of the running backs. Good stuff...

Had to catch up on the Olympics conversation because, apart from Women's Beach Volleyball, I see absolutely no reason to watch.

The Sydney Games were the best for three reasons: 1) it was in Sydney, the greatest city in the world, 2) there was more "free love" in Sydney than during all of the 60s combined...seriously, an amazing time and place to be single and in your 20s, 3) beach volleyball at Bondi...mmmmmmm.

I won't be in Beijing, obviously, but you can bet your Rabachs I'll be in Whistler in 2010. Given Whistler's reputation as "Disneyland for Adults", I suspect it may give Sydney a run for its money.

I love the teams that have 1 athlete. I mean how cool it must be to be there.

I believe that those poor men and women 'cheerleaders' ringing the athletes deserve gold medals and some kind of major bonus. They have been jigging forever and it's one million degrees.

Hungary women had by far the worst walk o'nations outfits. I mean they looked like dalmatians who'd been dyed red.

4th the opening ceremony was great! I can't even put it into words. How cool was it to see the 9 year old child with Yo? To go back and save two of his classmates is just amazing at that age.

That should be Yao as in Yao Ming.

Great story.

And at the end, the last olympic torch runner got lifted in the air all the way to the top of the stadium, and air ran across the whole stadium.......

I wouldn't mind watching all that again......

Only one way to describe that ceremony, Epic. Something about an LCD Screen bigger than a football fields is just crazy. The whole thing was amazing. And as much as most americans hate it, what that whole thing was about: China is here and can kick all our a$$es.

Problem is that we will be broke still, so even if we out spend them it would all be borrowed money from China. I think they spent 300 million so we would need to spend 500 million.

Posted by: DuckDuckGoose | August 8, 2008 4:42 PM

That would be bad ... the "fore Skins" ... I'll just take the victory thanks.

Though it is still raining here in northern Vermont, they DVRed the opening ceremony on a 60 inch HDTV. 15K performers, no repeats, practicing for 7.5 years. Stunning. The printing type that turned out NOT to be machines, but instead people, still amazes me. In other news, Matt Lauer is still a moron. He should have just stayed stupid and silent and let the China analyst talk. Malawi ... Madonna ... just please stop talking Matt.

I hope to see some of Nemo tonight ... talk about a guy on the bubble. Would also like to see Jimzo get some close call/red flag challenge opportunities. Plus, Suisham not missing (esp. with Frost holding).

I'd actually take Riggins who did it for so many more years. Campbell was a beat up back by his 5th year, why do you think he was traded out of Houston to NO?

I loved Jack Lambert, but he only weighed about 220 lbs! His forte was running sideline to sideline!

Kellen Winslow

Unfortunately Spurrier who ruined a tremendous college career leading Gators to tremendous heights.

Hockey was a much slower game back then, wrist passing as well. Once the slap shot was invented it escalated in all aspects of the game regarding increased speed...

OJ was a tremendous open field runner who could turn a 5 yard gain into a 70 yard TD much better than Payton. However, Payton could break actual tackles much better, get the tough yard on short yardage, and Payton unlike OJ was a tremendous blocker!
Payton!

Moseley had the incredible 82 season we all loved and affectionately adore, but no question Vinitieri is the much more accomplished kicker over a career.

Hey AL Zeke!

Quite the irony that your family was driving home from NJ listening to Skins come back to defeat CBoys in 72 24-20.

My family was visiting relatives in W Maryland. We drove up there on Saturday, spent the night, went to church w/ them on Sunday morning and began to watch the Skins game. My heart sank as Skins looked so sloppy falling behind 13-0 to Dallas.

My dad, said, no use watching any more of this and we left at halftime.

We listened to the game on the way back, I think the Skins were down 20-7, is that correct? Help me here? We lost one station, drove a while found another, and the skins were now only down 20-17, I think . And then was it Larry Brown who ran around left end for a long run? And we won 24-20, I still recall mixed emotions so glad the Skins had taken the lead, so sorry I was missing it!

I was 9 years old, still a vivid memory!

I'll take Barry Sanders over O.J. or Walter Payton (as long as YOU keep the Lions).

On peeps grousing about Zorn's push to re-sign Collins (system QB, blah blah), I think it was a smart QB move by a smart QB coach. Zorn knows that JC was/is the future and that he would be building an offense from scratch. By everyone's estimation, Collins is super smart (as in brains smart, not Joe Gibbs loves Brunell supersmart). Campbell, if anything, is a consummate student ... always learning, try to learn, many times returning to his freshman season with a new offense. If the choice is between an experienced vet with an inconsistent (though sometimes great) arm and a quirky genius immobile vet with great accuracy, Collins makes more sense. Collins also will be learning the new offense, which Zorn is going to be making up as he goes along. Collins can help develop that offense too. Collins doesn't need to be able to execute the offense until late in the season (i.e., statistically, given how few QBs are actually able to remain uninjured for an entire season). Campbell also has a good relationship with Collins (at least as good as Brunell) and has never had to be in direct competition with Collins (like he did with Brunell). Bottom line: The Todd is the ideal #2 QB for this team right now.

*Soccer rant coming*

What is up with the women's national team? They better put that '80s brand of soccer back in moth balls or they won't medal. Ugly. The ball is to be possessed; not ran down the field and given away at every opportunity to an inferior team. My 11-year-old can play better than that. I had her watch to discover heroes - not see sh!Ty soccer! Very few pieces of quality.

Well everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

A guy can be an unbelieveable dunker to win a dunk contest, but that does not mean in ANY way he will be a good player in crunch time.

Barry Sanders could do the most unbelievable things in the open field making people miss.
But guys, just as a BBall player must be able to defend, to rebound, to get position in the lane, to pass etc. so too Barry Sanders was not a good short yardage back.
Barry even hesitated so often instead of trying to get the two yards to get the 25 yards! Result? He had so many runs for losses!

And his blocking? No way is Barry Sanders a better all around RB than Walter Payton. Payton was a GREAT pass protector!

Hey jm22o!
I loved Jack Lambert!
I loved it when Dallas S Cliff Harris was heckling the Steelers' kicker when he missed a FG in the SB, Lambert ran over there and pushed him back having none of it!

He was a great team player, but unfortunately, I'm afraid the big mouth, Ray Lewis, the arrogant Ray Lewis, the criminal Ray Lewis is a better MLB.

Why is it when Ray Lewis was refusing to testify to a murder, guilty of obstruction of justice, they just let him go free?

Is our society that scared to prosecute our athletes after the OJ tragedy?

Posted by: RedskinRay1 | August 9, 2008 11:30 AM | Report abuse

Collins had to be re-signed after what he did to get the team in the playoffs. Zorn probably recognized that and recognized that he needed a veteran backup who knew his place was behind JC.

Payton over anyone, hands down.

Beach volleyball madness: Latvia upsets the US and A. And here I thought Latvia was a made-up country in the "Fantastic Four" comics, but that turns out to be Latveria. And, as much as an imbecile as our president is, he at least has good taste in sports and showed up to visit the Beach Volleyball team. This is pretty much exactly what I would do if I was a miserable failure as the leader of the free world and was watching helplessly as another superpower was emerging right in front of my eyes.

I got nothing else for the day.

B.Sanders had dung for an o-line that is why he had so many runs for a loss. Payton was a better pass blocker than even CP so that's not the issue, Sanders was no Ladell Betts in pass blocking.

Posted by: RedskinRay1 | August 9, 2008 10:08 AM

The slap shot has been around hockey since lakes started freezing.

What has changed the game and made it faster are: the introduction of the curved blade; better-conditioned athletes; the introduction of the "dump and chase" offense; lighter equipment and uniforms; and the influence of the European/international version of the game, with a much larger standard ice surface, less checking, and no fighting.

SKIPPY ON THE OLYMPICS

Hi. My name is Skippy and I have a metal plate in my head. I live with Mama and the twins of my dead sister, plus my Cat, Mr. Whiskers IV. I really REALLy like lemon meringue pie.

Skippy agrees with SFSkin who said he or she really likes the Olympics. So does Skippy, especially their biggest moldy but Oldy, "Western Movies."

It goes:

My baby loves the Western movies
My baby loves the Western movies

Pow pow (richochet sound) Uh-huh
My baby loves the western movies.

Eat your cart out Hobie Carmeister.

But today Skippy was bitterly disappeared when he watched the Equestrian Dressage Event. It is false sadvertsing. None of the horsies were dressed up at all!!!

Skippy expectorated to see Horsies with bonnets and horsey tuxedoes and maybe a liitle Horsey fencing outfit.

But all it was was naked horsies and women wearing goofy looking hats.

Skippy is starting a repetition to send Olympic host Hoss Costas, who has lost weight since the Banana Show he was on which was about a 52 year old rancher and his three 47 year old sons trying to tell if their cook was gay, not that there is anything wrong with that.

Also, GO Skims, of which Skippy is their biggest fan, and undoubtedly most confused. His only complain is ever since he changed his name from Frank Herzig to Barry Michaels, he sucks. He arks like he works for the redskims, or Don Snyder or something.

Skippy still like Bunny Jurgenson.

Fondly,

Skippy

Hard to know what Sanders would have been on a legit team. I think I'd go Payton not just better all around but played with more heart/passion and had leadership.

Again Sanders probably did a lot quietly etc. but Sweetness is one of those players who transcends team and time. Plus who else rocked the headband better . . . no not McMahon.

Personally, I think the Olympics should go to Africa next (Asia in 2008, Europe in 2012, Africa in 2016, North America in 2020, South America in 2024, etc.), but the IOC may not want to do that so soon after the 2010 World Cup.

Posted by: sfskin | August 9, 2008 2:33 PM | Report abuse

Continuing QB machinations . . .are NFL offenses so much more complicated and faster now than say 10-20 years ago that it is harder and harder to find a rookie who can step in and become a great QB?

I know that in the win now mentality of the NFL with free agency teams don't have the luxury of letting rookies develop and certainly that mentality means coaches don't have time to help their rookies develop either (Soups having 7 systems in 8 years.)

Maybe team jumping for a QB retards their development. For every Drew Brees you have Scott Mitchells, Joey Harringtons et al. who have a flash of 'greatness' go on to a new team and then burn out like a sparkler on the 4th of July.

The irony would be to see Brady go to the Dolphins after they passed on him in the Draft.

To your other question, I think that most times a good college QB is drafted, they are taken at the bottom of the 1st rd and those teams are usually not good. If one were drafted by a team that had a good OL, RB and WR(s), then the chance for success is better. My take anyway.

Love the Olympics, so blog away sfskin!

We're getting different coverage here back east...400 medley swimming and RUS/KOR handball. Do men play handball too, or just the women?

SF, the pokes suffered and are still suffering. But what really retarded development was exhuming those stiffs Bledsoe and Testaverde. Those were really re...uh, questionable moves.

Posted by: SMACK | August 9, 2008 2:52 PM | Report abuse

Yeah true on the drafting issue. I suppose Aaron Rodgers will be a 'test case' of this. He has had several years to learn/watch/develop and now has a pretty solid team to help him. Will he be able to pull it off.

Seriously handball is awesome! It's like a basketball/lacrosse/hockey combination. I love the shots on goal when they leap into the air and hurl the ball cause they can't step in that big yellow area.

Posted by: sfskin | August 9, 2008 2:55 PM | Report abuse

Men and women play handball.

We've got the RUS/KOR game but NBC is putting all the 'big events' like swimming on tape delay for all time zones.

Of course the Skins had hideous QB issues for years and when we had someone worthwhile Brad Johnson we sent him packing for . . . ugh I can't even say it.

Aside from Colt Brennan? Hard to think of many, which is why the Brunnels, Garcias, Favres, Brad Johnsons, Trent Greens, Bledsoes, Testaverdes etc hang around so long.

I wouldn't call Romo great (or young, really) but I'd rather endure the folly of relative youth than have to bear the agony of another AARPQB.

Much of what I'm about to say comes from envy and hatred but I am not sure that LBM didn't 'shoot his wad' as it were last year and that is it. He'll be the Gints Mark Rypien minus the AWESOME team and fans and every other awesome thing.

Posted by: sfskin | August 9, 2008 3:15 PM | Report abuse

Eh, Romo is pretty good and less than two years older than JC. Eli won the sb and he's not even a year older than JC. I dont' particularly care for Eli but he did win the big one. Other than that Cleveland has a couple good ones and the dude we'll see tonight for Buffalo has promise.

You could say Roethlisberger is great, I guess. And Eli has a ring, so, yeah. I'd say the only guy who might verge on greatness is Derek Anderson. Potentially, Campbell, Rivers and Garrard, but they are still in the game-manager category.

Posted by: sfskin | August 9, 2008 3:20 PM | Report abuse

True about Eli and SB on the other hand Trent Dilfer won an SB . . .well he was at the game at least.

Funny that it took me this long to think of Vince Young and Leinart - two big names at draft time and yet still no sense of where they'll fall on the scale of 'greatness'

Posted by: sfskin | August 9, 2008 3:24 PM | Report abuse

I don't have a great feeling about Matt Ryan, or Brady Quinn either when he gets his shot...unless of he walks into the perfect situation. People still tell me about Jay Cutler, I guess he could break out this year.

Posted by: SMACK | August 9, 2008 3:28 PM | Report abuse

So, let's set Colt Brennan aside. The guy is a God among men and it would be unfair to the others to compare anyone to him.

In the Colt-less league of extraordinary QBs, I'd have to rank them as Tony Romo, Derek Anderson, and Jason Campbell, in no particular order. LBM graduated out of the group by winning a Super Bowl. He now gets compared with the big boys. It's kind of exciting that 3 out of 4 NFC East teams have young, gifted QBs. It ensures that the Division will be competitive for quite some time.

Posted by: P Diddy | August 9, 2008 3:35 PM | Report abuse

And, yeah, I'm an idiot for not mentioning Vince Young and Jay Cutler, too.

My criteria for young QB is: flashes of brilliance, occasional moments of extreme pain, not yet fully realized their talent consistently, under 27.

Wow Cuba is wiping the floor with the poor Poles.
SMACK - lol true about poor MSNBC trying to keep it 'real' with news coverage.

War! Destruction! Death! Russian Aggression! and now back to synchronized swimming.

Of that list of QB's who would you trade for other than Soups?

Anyone else find it richly ironic and hilarious and awesome that the Americans who prefer to shoot and blow shti up swept fencing/sabre medals in Olympics? Love it!

Posted by: sfskin | August 9, 2008 3:58 PM | Report abuse

I am shocked (shocked!) to find myself getting into the Olympics. More hot athletic chicks please! What's next on the television agenda?

Posted by: P Diddy | August 9, 2008 4:02 PM | Report abuse

So I'm posting like a drunken Arianna Huffington because school resumes in a few days and I have much much work to do and well obviously this is better way to spend my time.

Sheesh even when we win all THREE medals NBC still only shows close up of gold medalist. Grrr

Now it's a time warp - NBC just showed the medal ceremony and now MSNBC is showing the semi-final match in sabers.

Diddy - hot women's beach v-ball on NBC. I imagine you'd rather watch that then the ladies fencing who are wearing their astronaut suits. : )

Posted by: sfskin | August 9, 2008 4:06 PM | Report abuse

Thanks sfskin!

Damn. It's un-American to root against Team USA, but those Dutch beach volleyball players are fantastic.

I was talking to a leifelong friend about Jason Campbell this morning. He thinks JC is on the hotseat. I tended to agree but caution making this a make or break season. I believe in patience with young QB's.

Posted by: sicwidit | August 9, 2008 4:16 PM | Report abuse

And major kudos to NBC for the quality of their HD broadcast. The opening ceremonies were some of the most stunning pictures I've ever seen on a television, and the quality of the games themselves is fantastic.

Posted by: P Diddy | August 9, 2008 4:16 PM | Report abuse

I think JC and JZ are inexorably linked from this point on. If JC does well, so does JZ. If JZ is fired prematurely, it will almost certainly be because of an underperforming team, the likely cause of which would be an inconsistent or oft-injured QB.

Posted by: P Diddy | August 9, 2008 4:18 PM | Report abuse

Please refrain from discussing the Olympics on the blog, and F china.

Thank you for your cooperation.

I don't think Zorn is in the hot seat in the least. This was one preseason games and some are ready to annoint Colt Brennan already, hello.

If Soups has a healthy o-line, stays healthy, has healthy receivers then the hot seat should be vaguely understandable.

Given the issues with finding a good QB you wonder how much time you give someone like Soups with all the changes he's dealt with.
A guy like Aaron Rodgers should be in the hotseat . . . Soups not as much.

I think Diddy is right Zorn and Soups are linked period.

Chia - shouldn't this be a moment of great national pride for you? Afterall you are Made in China aren't you?

: )

Posted by: sfskin | August 9, 2008 4:49 PM | Report abuse

Yeah...I agree. I think any coach's success depends on QB play as it should. I just feel like Campbell now has someone who can help him develop into that "potential" that everyone has been talking about. When you have a gun-shy coach like Gibbs, then it could stunt his growth.

The one thing that Campbell must prove to me this season is that he can come from behind and win a game. That woould be what I would need to see for me to stick with him.

Posted by: sicwidit | August 9, 2008 4:54 PM | Report abuse

sfskin,

Not exactly proud of my Made in China designation; I seem to well made, however, which is sayin' something. Chinese clay, when used to make a figurine, is good enough, unlike Chinese concrete, when used to make a building.

:-(

If Brennan proves to be a viable young QB, when was the last time DC had two young Stud QB's....Frerrote/Green???

Posted by: sicwidit | August 9, 2008 4:56 PM | Report abuse

Couldn't agree more that Gibbs stunted JC's growth, and undermined his confidence.

The true measure of how far Zen's tutelage of Soup has repaired this chink in his armor, will become apparent when the play breaks down, especially in pivotal moments of big games.

You can do it, Soup!

Posted by: Chia Pet | August 9, 2008 4:59 PM | Report abuse

Make no mistake, I'm pulling for JC and JZ and everyone on the team. After all, I bleed maroon.

I was just making what should be a fairly obvious observation.

Posted by: P Diddy | August 9, 2008 5:00 PM | Report abuse

Opening game in the Meadowlands qualifies as the first big game for Soup. If he comes out of the gate strong, consider the Gibbs era a distant memory.

Indirectly, JC is the biggest beneficiary of the Taylor acquisition. The ability to knock Eli around will result in a positive back flow for Soup, and the offense as a whole.

MORE SKIPPY OLYMPICS

Skippy hopes in his heart of hards, that they haven't been got rid of his favorite all time spurt of the olympics-- Snychronized Ribbon Waving.

Now that's athleticals. People wave a ribbona and run at the same time. first one to trip wins.

Skippy's favorite winter spurt is sweeping the sidewalk while a guy throws a rock at you. The Canadians, because they are drunk all the time, are the best at that.

Also, the Librathalon which is good. Skiiers ski as fast as they can with a rifle on their head, and stop every 500 yards to shoot a Librarian.

Skippy HATES the new sport of relative stabbing, but thinks the Chinese guy, excuse you, Asian guy was "jobbed" by the Russian judge on the suicidal plummet. He got a 5.5, and it was AT LEAST a seven. The Russian said he blew the dismount and the Kersplat.

President Dubya Brush is so upset about the Russian invasioning of Georgia, he's banned Ray Charles concerts at the White Horse.

Fondly,

Skippy

Hey there...thanks for the TCCLs, JM. Ten is a lot to live up to...I was shopping on my day off in Whole Foods yesterday -- eating a free lunch by wheeling from sample to sample and thinking I'd whip by Trader Joe's to see what nibbles they were offering; sometimes it's wine! -- and reading the blog on my 'berry when I saw the item about 100k comments. I nearly freaked!!! Fear not, hamster nation, we're at 216,211.

Thanks for that, Diddy.

I love Trader Joe's. The best place to shop for someone like me that doesn't eat meat, chicken, or Turkey.

Posted by: jm220 | August 9, 2008 5:25 PM | Report abuse

I hate Trader Joe's largely because everyone trying to get into the parking lot causes a traffic jam on a street I frequently go on on my way in a hurry late to an appointment. It's the bitter little troll in me.

Well at least our preseason game v. Jets will get nauseatingly over the top beyond the pale excessive coverage.

BTW (sorry Chia) watching cycling - Chinese set up a bus stop thingy with a continous shower of water so riders can ride through. Very strange, cool and dangerous.

Posted by: sfskin | August 9, 2008 5:30 PM | Report abuse

I shop at Trader Joe's too, but I am a carnivore. I must have meat. I eat maybe one steak a month, but I do eat a lot of lean ground beef and chicken and lots o' fish.

I have several "vegan" friends who will tear a rib up when I'm not lookin'.

Where are the studies that show that meat is bad for your health? Didn't Jesus eat fish and lamb?

Posted by: jm220 | August 9, 2008 5:35 PM | Report abuse

Yeah...jm220,

"vegan" is the new thing, but I've seen many fall off the wagon. Part of my purpose in life is to test the wills of all vegans. Can you resist a "real" Philly cheesesteak from Philly...how about a Lambeau bratwurst or a "White Russian" made at Coyote Ugly's in Vegas.

If you pass these riddles three, then you are worthy of "Vegan-dom"

Posted by: sicwidit | August 9, 2008 5:47 PM | Report abuse

LMAO! sicwidit I am not a vegan. I eat Salmon, whiting, and Tuna every now and then. A vegan don't even eat fish.

Posted by: jm220 | August 9, 2008 5:57 PM | Report abuse

Since I've been running, I've been craving protein. Every so often, I roll the E coli dice and go out for a steak.

Posted by: Cindy | August 9, 2008 6:05 PM | Report abuse

I'm an incorrigible carnivore/omnivore so if e-coli is going to take me out I hope it's with a good prime rib.

SKIPPY ON VEGANMORTONSENISM

Skippy used to be a car-i-vore, specializing mostly on Buicks and a nice tasty Nash Rambler.

That's a Skippy joke. He didnt' eat cars, he ate carneys.

But all that cramped to a squeeky halter when Skippy saw the movie about hee little adorational talking piggie, "Babe" which made him cry the most since he saw Dumbo shoot Bambi's Mom right in the Nutcracker. Sweet!

So, after leaving the movie Skippy went for a final Barbeque rib dinner with fries and slaw and beers and Lemon Meringue Pie for desserp. But then he made a solemn oaf.

Because of "Babe, the talking Pig which was cute and rounded up those sheeos and din't evn have his way with them unlike some people on this broad.

Skippy's oaf is although once a carnivalbore, for the rest of his life or as long as he lives, whichever comes first, Skippy will never ever ever ever ever eat a Talking Pig.

Fondly,

Skippy

"-5 TCCLs - The Cult of Colt."

Yeah, well, if you remembered Jordan Palmer at the Jacksonville preseason game you'd throw in a few TCCLs for Colt's less than a half too. Now *that* was a wasted pick. I coulda played half as well as Palmer did.
