Suggs: the Rest of the Interview

Cleaning out my interview files from the Baltimore game, I thought I'd share what was left floor from a lively, three-minute interview with Terrell Suggs. The dude is a quote machine.

As I wrote Monday, Suggs was nursing a grudge because he was hurt by being booed loudly when his name was announced at a Wizards game a few weeks back, and he was stunned that reserve guard Justin Geisinger was twice allowed to line up against him at left tackle without any help from a tight end. (That may not be quite as egregious as Joe Gibbs not knowing the timeout rule in the Buffalo game last year, but the potential for damage, had Jason Campbell gotten hurt, was far greater.)

The scheme Baltimore ran, with its circus look creating chaos and confusion, was interesting, but as soon as I asked Suggs about that and his ability to thrive in it, he immediately flashed back to the Wizards game.

"I've been saying it all day, it was kind of personal for me," Suggs said. "I went to a Wizards game a couple of weeks ago to support their teams, you know, and watch the Wizards, ands the guys booed me when they announced I was there. I was there supporting the Wizards."

It was at that point that Suggs circled the Dec. 7 game against the Redskins on his calendar. (BTW, if this dude shows up at a Caps game, I'd recommend sprinkling in a few cheers. I'd be surprised if the Ravens let him go, but his contract is up at the end of the season.)

Suggs went on to explain that the events at Verizon Center scared him a bit on an emotional level. He wasn't done yet.

"I wish I had made more plays [Sunday night] and been more destructive," he said. "But my play ... the way I played, I was really kind of ticked off because those guys booed me. I am big and I am a part of a tough and physical defense, but I do have feelings and they hurt my feelings. So it was kind of personal ..."

I asked Suggs about the confusion Baltimore's overloads caused, with fullback Mike Sellers sometimes picking up the same blitzer as tackle Chris Samuels while others were allowed to fly free. "He took me a couple of times and he caught me one time," Suggs said. "We talked about it. But I think we went out there and we played relentless. We wanted to defend our home turf. Had it been at FedEx Field it might have been the other way around."

I then asked Suggs about his reaction when he saw Justin Geisinger enter the game: "I knew right away it wasn't Chris Samuels," Suggs joked.

Suggs then urged me to check out the film and said he had pointed to Coach Jim Zorn on the sidelines about the gaffe he was making by giving the Ravens this gift match-up.

"I actually pointed at Jim Zorn and said, 'You can't do this, you're going to get your quarterback hurt,'" said Suggs. "I was like, 'I don't think this guys is supposed to be here. You've got a mistake.'"

Suggs praised Geisinger for surviving the mismatch. "He did good," Suggs said. "I only got one sack on him. He did a good job for what he was. As a center he shouldn't have to play tackle."

That ends our look back. Time to look ahead to the Bengals and the Redskins' offensive and injury problems.

Psps23,

I'm saying just like you can't blame the deficiencies of an offense or defense on 1 player, you can't say that because Torrence is gone the ENTIRE special teams unit has fallen off the face of the earth. Torrence may have been good, but not so good that we have to rue the day the Skins cut him EVERY F-ING WEEK.

And for stats, I would go to NFL.com. Stuff tends to be official there and ESPN (aka Access Hollywood for sports) is probably adding a Dallas-biased slant to league-wide stats knowing that corrupt outfit...

The Leigh Torrence stuff is like a bad SNL joke now. LMAO

I remember seeing Leigh Torrence miss multiple balls he should've downed inside the 10 or 15, but other than that he never did anything.

Jesus, that Leigh Torrence reference on the last one caught me way off guard. It was like a quick jab, wasn't ready for that JLC. TOUCHE my man TOUCHE

Lisa,

How would that be possible they run a WCO in the NFC east, and according to the NFL people we have on the blog that will never work.

Posted by: Flounder21 | December 9, 2008 9:10 AM

I'm an NFL fan, not affiliated with the NFL though (Trying to get the legal mumbo jumbo out the way)...

The Eagles winning the SB is laughable flounder.

To correct my self, One team did win the SB with a WCO. TB. But they are on the West Coast of the state, so maybe that dosen't count (and that being they mostly won on the strength of their defense). And what have they done since?

Either way, my (meaningless) theory hasn't been proven wrong in the NFC East so far, so good luck trying to knock it....

Ya'll do realize he's just doing the Torrence thing to annoy you and get ticked off and blogging about. The more posts the better, so why not say things that annoy so people post more. We haven't downed a punt all season with or without Torrence.

Since I saw the "NFC Playoff Picture" board on MNF last night and we are conspicuously missing from it, I feel its appropriate to discuss offseason plans now. Since thanks to last year's draft we are going to have to rebuild our lines through free agency here is my hope for the offseason:

Resign:
Rogers
Hall

Do not resign Kendall

Cut:
Springs
Taylor
Griffin

Lloyd's 5.5 and Wade's 1.1 million drops off as well

Sign:
Haynesworth DT (Guaranteed Free Agency with Pro Bowl appearance)
Jahri Evans G
Mike Goff G
Bart Scott OLB
Chris Canty DE (he's still young and has been buried in Dallas' 3-4 at 300 pounds can still rush the passer would be perfect for our D and wouldn't cost near what Suggs or Peppers are going to cost if you can't get him Kevin Carter from Tampa)

Draft:
1 - Moreno (Portis can't handle the workload they gave him first 10 weeks and Betts isn't special, we already have youth at receiver and end and we've seen what happens when our running game disappears if CP is hurt)
3 - O Tackle
5 - Dend
6 - best available

fred,

I was reading the post and thinking it was a valid look at how bad we are in Punting and Kicking field goals, then when he throws that in there it makes everything else he wrote meaningless.

Yes, same reaction here. I'm beginning to think (hope) that a couple of bloggers are right that JLaC is just stirring the pot. It doesn't come across as tongue in cheek, but that is hard to pick up on the internet. So I'm still thinking that he is serious. WOW!

Fair enough, and I agree with you. But at least that stat helps prove that JLC isn't pulling one out of his @ss just to get attention to the FO.

All I'm saying is don't shoot the messenger. Someone asked for stats, I provided them. Nothing more.

** FF Post **

Congratulations to 'Sween for "winning" the first phase of fantasy (and trouncing me last night thanks to DeAngelo) that one point win you had over me earlier this year made all the difference for me...

Here are the playoff brackets for teh top 8 in the #1 league.

#8 Team BeltwayBlues
#1 Ham Stweengs

#5 Team daggar
#4 Sthil Stumped

#6 Kost's Ozskins
#3 Flag Throwers Anon

#7 E-Funk All-Stars
#2 Proverbial Ham Sandwich

Congratulations to 4-12 for making it in by losing to Stumped (thanks to Antonio Bryant's 38 points), if he'd won - like he should have - I would be the #8 playoff contender. And then would have been trounced again by Sween this week so no matter!

Good luck to all this week. I now assume my rightful place as the #1 seed in the 'consolation bowl' tournament of 8. Maybe I can snatch that 'signed' Archuleta jersey yet!!

We are losing because our team isn't scoring any points. So, how can there be a direct corelation?

4th, that was sarcasm. I know I wondered if JLaC was using it and said it didn't come across, but I thought that my comments were so ridiculous that everyone would know I was being sarcastic.

AWWWWW! Suggs has a mangina.

Posted by: Tyler2Durden | December 9, 2008 9:42 AM | Report abuse

Suggs shouldn't take the booing personally, the fans just thought he was on the Wizards...

I want to know if it's Zorn's or Buge's fault that he was left to block Suggs with no help.

Ok, last note on Leigh Torrence.

As Redcoat indicated, Karma is a B$%tch.

Leigh was the biggest supportter of Obama in the locker room. And Vinny and Danny (staunch Republicans) cut him the same week of Obama's victory. Was there an additional motive? Who knows.

I believe in a higher power (to be somewhat politically coorect w/o causing a barnstorm of negative posts), and I know I should have died in a car accident 2 weeks ago, but I was somehow miracously saved.

That being said, maybe a higher power does have something to do with our losing streak because ownership was being a scrooge to Leigh.

Not saying I believe it, but I wouldn't NOT believe it..........

Haynesworth and Suggs would cost us way too much to acquire next year don't you think?

This might be the worst move the franchise could possibly do in the offseason. There are 4 positions on this team (going into next season) that do not need any immediate help; QB, RB, S, and TE. That's it. Wasting a 1st rounder on a RB would be baffling and borderline moronic.

That said, drafting a TE with last years 2nd round pick was equally as baffling, so I wouldn't put it past the FO. Especially if he's "best player available."

Posted by: psps23 | December 9, 2008 9:46 AM | Report abuse

Notice how none of the Skins players ever have a grudge? Ever show any emotion at all? Even when a free agent (and about 50% of the Skins starters came from somewhere else because the FO drafts so poorly) play his former team, they never seem to get up for it.

But don't think that by signing Suggs you'd be buying passion. No, he'd get his big money contract, but he'd leave the passion behind. That's because the "Decade of Danny" has crushed the spirit of the entire organization.

You can count on it. Mr. Snyder's already reviewing designs for the 1000th Game Souvenir Jerseys. $49.99 in youth sizes, $79.99 in adult sizes. Would you like to reserve yours now, Alex?

No fredie I would paraphrase what 4th said as "what goes around, comes around" and that maybe this one is on "Mr" Snyder for past transgressions.

I can't remember ever hearing of a defensive player having more concern for the health and safety of a QB than the coach.

It just boggles the mind. I'd say I'm speechless, but, well… does writing count as speech?

I agree, psps. I would add CB to the list of positions where we are solid. Emphasis should be on DT, OT, and LB. Best available from those positions.

If I hadn't seen what kind of offense we have when Portis gets hurt I would agree with you, but I watch the Dolphins with Ricky and Ronnie, the Panthers with Stewart and Williams, the Colts with Addai and Rhodes, the Titans with White and Johnson, the Giants with Jacobs and Ward and Bradshaw, the Cowboys with Choice and Barber and Jones, and the list goes on and I think our offense needs another back to share the load with CP and Betts isn't that guy obviously.

Plus, I said prior to saying pick moreno, if and only if you've plugged your other holes in FA, which if you look at the list I put up there of signees if we could fill those positions why not get a guy to help CP?

Posted by: zjfr2 | December 9, 2008 9:54 AM | Report abuse

Call me naive, but I have to sincerely doubt that Zorn had anything to do with determining where Geisinger would play on the line. There is no doubt in my mind that the Buges made that call.

The issue is more with who determined who would be active for the game, and playcalling (protection schemes) given that a backup center was manning the left tackle position.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/12/08/AR2008120803484.html

Our front office, including Gibbs is, has and will continue to ruin us.

Why can’t they look at Pitts, Philly, NE, Indy, NYG and possibly Bmore and try to at least emulate their structure to bring talent and stability.

The other thing they don’t talk about with Campbell is how many OC and schemes he has had to deal with.

Can you really tell me that Tomlin is that great a coach? The Steelers bring players that fit the scheme and coaches that fit as well. The Skins never try to stabilize.

as a fan of all local dc sports teams, i'm not much of a booer, but i would pissed if the verizon center cheered for suggs. he doesn't play for one of our teams. would portis be cheered if he was announced at an orioles game? if we cheered, we would be criticized for being soft fans. i don't know what suggs expected. next time he comes to a game, if i'm there, maybe i will boo him.

i dont know. i have mixed feeligns on that. the wizards, caps and united are washington's teams but they're also maryland and virginia's. since there is no baltimore basketball (etc) team the rules change. in short booing suggs at a nats game = right. booing suggs at a wizards game = wrong (unless it was last week).
