The Allen brothers, together again
Among those happy with the Washington Redskins' off-season moves is George Allen, former U.S. Senator, Virginia governor and one-time presidential candidate.
Allen is the older brother of Redskins General Manager Bruce Allen. The two grew up with the sport as the children of 1970s Redkins Coach George Allen. The brothers trade e-mails, with Bruce offering George observations on political matters and George interested in football.
George the younger offered his opinion of the Redskins' off-season after Wednesday's practice.
"I think Bruce has done a fantastic job in improving the players, acquiring players on the team," he said. "The coaching staff is outstanding. Proven winners from all over."
As George spoke, Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett passed by.
"Coaches matter a lot," he said. "In this league, schemes, motivation, the ability to get the most out of your players, the key preparation that you have with the drilling and the studying and the practices. These are really outstanding coaches. I think the players who are coming back are playing better. ...Obviously, there's been an update at quarterback, greater depth at running back, offensive line -- T.W., Silverback, I guess is his nickname, obviously is the key.
"Having played quarterback, I think the offensive lines and defensive lines are most important. The defense has good players, and they've added a lot of good players. Some of them, Bruce has gotten for a really good price, so to speak."
Allen sat with his new book, "What Washington Can Learn from the World of Sports." At one point, he was embraced by former Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann. He told a number of family stories that you can find here in the D.C. Sports Bog; check out the one about Bruce yelling "shotgun" around President Richard Nixon's Secret Service detail.
George has especially enjoyed Bruce returning to the franchise that their father coached from 1971-1977. At the end of the 2009 season, their mother came to Virginia for Christmas and George drove her and the family to FedEx Field for the Dec. 27 Redskins-Cowboys game.
"Bruce, general manager of the Redskins and we're going to the Redskins-Cowboys game," she said to George. "I wonder what Daddy is thinking of this."
George said he also appreciates that his youngest daughter and Bruce's youngest daughter have been able to spend time together. George's family has cheered for Bruce's teams wherever Bruce worked, although after recalling the condition of the franchise when his father first arrived in Washington, he was excited about the possibilities of another rebuilding effort.
"It seems so right, so natural, that that legacy continues," George said.

This is also the infamous game where I snuck in with a 6 pack and a foot long sausage.....while Kost52 and 4-12 were stopped at the gate...lol

WaPo's coverage of the 1972 game. Give an idea of how dominant that defense was, here's an excerpt:
On first down, linebacker Chris Hanburger sacked Staubach at the 23 and, on second down, Hill fumbled Staubach's swing pass while falling forward and Ron McDole recovered at the Dallas 38, the Cowboys' furthest advance of the second half.

Williams was unfazed by his former coach's comments, he said. "I wasn't really worried about what that coach had to say. What he had to say really wasn't important to me. I mean, obviously, it wasn't important to Washington, either. You going to always have people who got their opinions. Obviously, what he was saying didn't match up to what was being produced on the field. And that's why I went where I went."

I just read this... the coach was right, he is just satisfied & doesn't sound like a guy that is humble & willing to take criticism. His coach said, "he could be the best ever if he added to his natural strength" & he treats it like ho-hum "who cares what that guy thinks" ... ridiculous.
I bet he'll be in the weight room here or his other fellow lineman better keep him straight.

3 players and the coach are in the HOF from that era. George Allen, Ken Houston, Sonny and Charley Taylor ... all were easy calls except the coach (great record, but no NFL championships).
There are 4 Skins from the '72 team that definitely deserve serious HOF consideration from the old timers.
The others that merit consideration are:
Larry Brown. Great, though his career was short. But he compares favorably to the recently inducted Floyd Little, who had a similar career.
Jerry Smith. Compares favorably to the TE's that are in. And ... held the TD record for TE ... for a staggering 30 years!! Even today, the only TEs with more TDs are Shannon Sharpe and Tony Gonzales.
Len Hauss. Hard to make a case for a center, though Hauss was a regular at the Pro Bowl.
Chris Hanburger. More Pro Bowl appearances than anyone not in the hall (9?). Should be an easy easy easy call.

the comment was probably a naive and misguided attempt to make fun of his own stupid mistake (compare "silverback, I guess is his nickname" vs. "macaca, or whatever his name is").
the mix of politics, religion, and sports can get weird... although some classic moments in sports history have involved significant political gestures of the type that George Allen lacks the balls for...

Well we all saw how the Karma of Zorn biking with George W. Bush worked out.
I'd advise Shanahan not to get too chummy with Mr. Macaca, tho I respect the delicate position he's in.
One of the reasons why the 'skins actually jntegrated is their lilly white squad inspired Blacks from other teams to elevate their game.
Having a close association with a guy run out of a Presidential race because of his racially insensitive remarks is not the way to inspire your own African American Players, or defuse opponents.
Obviously a "Hi, how are you" and occasional brotherly meals w/ both allens can't be avoided--but let's not overdo ir.

Is this a joke? or did the Post actually change his quote?
Macaca is the racial slur that Allen got in trouble for using back in 2006. Are you just trying to remind us of that?
Heres what Wikipedia has to say about Macaca:
Macaca[1] is a pejorative epithet used by francophone colonialists in Central Africa's Belgian Congo for the native population.[2] It may be derived from the name of the genus comprising macaque monkeys. The word macaque has also been used as a racial slur. The macaque's genus name, Macaca, is a latinization of the Bantu (Kongo) ma-kako,[3] meaning "monkey".

I told you man. This coastal lifestyle suits me just fine. I guess I could tell him to go back to his truckstop bathroom stall and earn his rent but that just doesn't seem right.

Funny how album Motorhead is nothing like live Motorhead. But both are great.

you have not only nailed my all-time favorite cow punks, but hit on one of their best songs.
a certain PNW band was late on the scene with their version, although they gave appropriate kudos to influences.
having been topped and out-referenced, must sign off before wife starts reading posts again.
but not without awarding smack dinner of his choice...
hopefully this will suffice?

That's more parody than I can handle. Tina Fey could do a great skit about them on SNL.

There is now a blood test to see if your son is going to be gay. It's called an HIV test.

Don't be fooled diesel. SkinshaveaGM is none other than periculum. He screwed up and used the insult "Paint your bald spot" the other day. There is only one person in the blogosphere that would use that. Perineum.

You KNOW them boys in forensics are going over the Gary coleman death scene with the proverbial fine-toothed comb.
Would NOT be shocked to learn this was no accident.

CR22 is like a fighter with a great chin (cover corner) but no striking abilities (interceptions). You can whale away on him with no fear of being hurt.
QBs do not have to fear throwing his way at all, even if his coverage is generally good.

Love having the Allens in the Redskin family, now pure Burgundy and Gold instead of split with the Bucaneers. George was a great senator. Wish he could have been president. Maybe in the future. Bruce seems to be at the place he was meant to be_GM of the Redskins.
