The Grim Reaper Speaks

Sean Taylor decided to speak to the schlubs today. Didn't say a whole lot but he did answer every question.

Wish I had time to put it up here now, but I have too much stuff going on. I'll try to put some up later.

As for other stuff:
Pucillo could get a grasp on the staring guard spot if he plays well Sat. Bugel called it a "golden opportunity" for him. Wade likely won't dress.

Randle El is back and should be ready to play.

Like we wrote in the paper today, there is at least some degree of competition for the backup QB job, and Collins will be the first guy off the bench when Campbell is pulled Sat.

Coach Joe said he has a rough plan to play the starters as much as they did last weekend, but the decision ultimately will be dictated by how they perform.

Actually, Sean Taylor had a lot to say, but Sean's words couldn't be heard because the microphone kept backing away from him.

CMoney, I think Soup is the only candidate for 'getting Ramseyed' this season. The presumptive starter, a youngster with a small, questionable resume, who is permanently replaced by Brunell at the first opportunity.

Ain't gonna happen.

I hope.

There are only three things wrong with the Redskins;

The Owner who has tried to buy a Championship since he bought the Redskins.

The Coaching staff to unclude; Golly Gee Whiz Coach Gibbs who simply doesn't know how to motivate today's so-called professionals.

The Team who have serious ego problems and can't play a full 60 minutes of professional football.

COMMISH PLANS TO ADDRESS FIRST-ROUND WINDFALLS

As NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell approaches his one-year anniversary, it occurs to us that we have agreed with virtually every decision that Goodell has made.

And we think we're going to agree with most of his decisions in year two. Especially if one of them is to try to address the ongoing problem regarding the payment of enormous windfalls to rookies who have never worn an NFL helmet except when trick-or-treating.

This year, for example, safety LaRon Landry received more guaranteed money than any safety in the history of the league, simply because his name was the sixth one called on draft day.

sween, the '07 media guide provides pronunciation tips for the guy listed immediately before Pucillo ("PEER-sun PRAY-low") and the guy listed immediately after ("RAH-bock") but, alas, not for Poochie himself.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 16, 2007 5:16 PM | Report abuse

The vets would love a better rookie salary cap. Means more money for them. I'd like to see rookies capped at $2-3 million a year average including bonuses and incentives. It'd be good or everyone.
Yes I just came up with that figure off the top of my head.

Lower the amount rookies can get and raise the Vet minimum.

Posted by: the don | August 16, 2007 5:17 PM | Report abuse

Noticed that the media guide sez Ade Jimoh got twenty special teams tackles last season. Twenty! Good grief, that is a lot.

I guess we absolutely have to keep a guy around like that, with that kind of nose for the ball on kick coverage.

But I still don't want him anywhere near our D backfield, unless the play is an obvious kneel-down in the final seconds and we're up or down more than 8 points.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 16, 2007 5:19 PM | Report abuse

Agreed. The 1st rounders salaries have spiraled too high.

That's why next year ALL of the Juniors who think they have potential will enter the draft knowing that will be the year of the last big payday for 1st rounders.........

Posted by: 4th | August 16, 2007 5:20 PM | Report abuse

I remember a few seasons ago a poster posted a funny poem about Jimoh and how he wanted him to get cut. I wish I had saved it. It was hillarious.

Nate, I'm just hoping for an Italian speaker, esp. one who says its pronounced poo-SILL-oh or pyoo-SILL-oh, because Poochie is my least favorite secondary character on The Simpsons ... him and Gil.

Sean Taylor speaks, and on the same day, scientists announce they've broken the speed of light. Coincidence?

Posted by: the don | August 16, 2007 5:22 PM | Report abuse

Shouldn't they have just called it "the speed of Sean Taylor"?

Posted by: 4-12 | August 16, 2007 5:23 PM | Report abuse

Seems like the kid safeties are something we can almost universally agree on. Which is rare.

It's clobberin' time!

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 16, 2007 5:26 PM | Report abuse

The problem with rookie salaries being so high, is it can damage a team that's already not good. A team in the top 3 of the draft will have a record below 4-12. If they make a bad pick in the first round now they'll still be sub 4-12 but with cap problems.

How long did it take the chargers to recover from Ryan Leaf?

Posted by: 4th | August 16, 2007 5:33 PM | Report abuse

Gnu post!

Posted by: Beep beep | August 16, 2007 5:35 PM | Report abuse

the don, seems to me you're talking about two different but related things... the exploding pay scale for rookies, which affects everyone, and the chance of missing on a pick, which is a risk everyone incurs.

Sure, when the Chargers missed on Leaf it was a double-whammy: they essentially forfeited the #2 pick by selecting Cryin' Leaf, AND they sacrificed all that cap space to pay him.

But they would have probably forfeited roughly the same amount of cap space to that pick even if he had been a total stud player for the length of that rookie contract.

Maybe it's the same thing. Maybe I have no point here. As usual.

Towards 100k, anyway.
