What I find funny is that the high-minded, moralistic sports media types decry the fight while showing clips of it on a loop for 4 minutes each time they come to complain about it.
It's like they are saying, "I hate porn, but let's watch some to point out how sick it is."

I'm not a big-time cool-aid drinker when it comes to the Skins, but I do hope and pray they win each week. Had a feeling they would lose to the Vikings.
Having said that, I think the Skins can take 4 more games--a strech I know, but it is realistic. Lose to the Giants last game of the year.

Today's Bad Metaphor Award got to:
Tracee Hamilton:
The Redskins' front office is filled with savvy shoppers. They made arrangements to get the bird they wanted way back in April. They could have gone with some young tom from a turkey farm, but you don't know what they feed those birds or how they're going to turn out. Sometimes they don't mature in time for the table. They could also have gone free range, but those gobblers are pricey and it's hard to find just the right one, not too old, not too young, tough but not scrawny.
Anybody who compares the contruction of a football team to the preparation of Thanksgiving dinner doesn't deserve to eat.

Knew a guy in college who described himself as a fast talking Mick. When he'd fight, the first thing he'd do is ask someone to "hold my teeth". He lost the originals along the way ...
He was also an All-American athlete, hero in the first WTC bombing and a victim on 9/11.

Does seem rather lightweight -- especially when compared with other events taking place in the league office. So they'll heavily fine and suspend a player for making a legal tackle or incidental contact, but then look the other way when a known thug decides to rip off your helmet and start wailing away.

Moe,
The 'skins are 1-3 in their last four games including losses to the 2-9 Lions, 3-8 Vikings and getting their worst butt-kicking at home to the division rival Eagles. Squeaking an overtime loss over a team that hasn't scored since they lost their top two qb's is not exactly a confidence booster. Most folks are ready for somethingelse. There just isn't much to be positive about.

Here are some stats to try throw a positive spin on things.
The 'skins are 3-2 against winning teams. Four of their last five games are against teams with winning records.
The 'skins are also 3-2 on the road and have three of their last five games on the road.
The 'skins are 2-0 against winning teams on the road. This week they play the 7-4 Giants on the road.

One guy threw haymakers, one guy threw zero punches. Johnson ripped Finnegans helmet off the previous play (I think), so that's the rules of engagement.
Total double standard AJ definitely should have got a harsher sentence because he threw punches.

This is one of the few times I'm 100% okay with Goodell's inconsistent policy. Andre has been great for the game his whole career, just a quiet dominator.
Players across the league respect the way he goes about his business. 'innegan (no F because he got it knocked out of him Sunday) is a notorious cheap shot artist, and got what he had coming. It should have been a suspension for Andre and maybe innegan too, but this time around I'm okay that it wasn't. Can't wait to see how Goodell handles the next brawl, he's set a dicey precedent.

No, the fines were totally inappropriate and unfair.
I can't believe they fined AJ - a travesty of justice. They should have given him a medal.
When a snot like Finnegan openly declares that his ambition is to play "dirty", he's basically saying "my intention is to play in a fashion where I break rules at other people's expense and get away with it."
Someone like that should get no protection from the rules that he openly intends to manipulate.
Fining AJ makes the league look chump.
The only thing more disappointing about the fine given to AJ is that none of his haymakers landed flush on Finnegan's nose...oh, well, maybe next time.
And if Jeff Fisher does anything less than come out and roundly condemn Finnegan for the type of player that he is, then Fisher should lose his seat on the NFL Competition Committee.

You just can't make with the punching. That is what the NF of L has to prevent. They won't abide having fisticuffs sully their precious, zealously managed entertainment experience. Too much at stake.
So the question is not who was the bigger punk, who instigated, who deserved what, or whatever, it's whether the punishment will prevent future incidents. We'll see.

Aj instigated on the precious play, so CF retaliated on the next play. IMO the guy who threw punches should get a bigger penalty.
In hockey if one guy punches and one guy doesn't, the puncher takes a bigger penalty.
Just a bunch of TD lovers taking AJs side. The double standard is offensive, pun intended.
The refs shouldve flagged the previous play and squashed it.

One player was composed and knew all along what he was doing.
The other player lost his composure and started swinging.
The idiots defending Andre Johnson are the same mainstream lemmings who haven't gotten over their adolescent-"all that glitters is gold" phase.

PFunk, that's the type of player jeff fisher was on buddys D, so your expecations are off IMO.
A lot of defensive players have that attitude, "arrive quickly and with bad intentions"
doesn't surprise me that so many are taking the more popular players' side, even though AJ instigated on the previous play and the refs didn't throw the flag.
If AJ can pop CF in the head and the refs won't call it then CF popped AJ on the next play and forced the refs to do their job, that's good tough defense!

Future incidents will be prevented when the NFL gets serious about punishing dirty cheap-shot artist instigators like Finnegan more severely.
Apparently Finnegan had already been fined/warned multiple times by the NFL regarding dirty play.
They should adopt an NBA-style running tally of personal fouls/late hits (technicals) on a player with quickly escalating punishments that result in suspensions.

If AJ had been suspended and not CF, there would have been quiet, yet loud rumblings among a "certain crowd of folk" who feel like there is a conspiracy against the darker complected "certain crowd of folk" versus the lighter complected "certain crowd of folk"
Just watch TV and explain to me why the lighter complected "certain crowd of folk" get more run. Or why they photoshop darker "certain crowd of folk" to make them a few shades lighter?

It would have been bad juju for the NFL to only suspend the darker complected player and not the lighter complected player.

I still don't understand why people up here respond to certain blogger/posters whose only intention is to find out what people think and then be an obnoxious proponent for the opposite POV just to get attention.
It's a tiring act, made only more tiring by responders who feed it with direct responses.
My advice is to treat it the same way you would treat that annoying rattling sound that comes out of your window-unit air-conditioner. Instead of banging it again and again hoping it will shut off, just ignore it and let the mindless droning blend into the background noise.

On the previous play AJ ripped Finnegans helmet off.
Finnegan defended himself or else who was to stop AJ from doing that again, the refs? You?

I truly think AJ was the instigator and crossed the line by throwing punches. Finnegan's past shouldn't cloud the present or future. I'm not just playing devils advocate.
AJ hit CF in the facemask and knocked his helmet off, so CF hit AJ on the next play and a fight ensued. One player threw punches, one did not. "Jordan Rule" sucks IMO.
Posted by: pabrian2003 | November 30, 2010 7:45 PM | Report abuse
If Finnegan were in fact breaking rules, the smart, veteran move would be to get in the ref's ear from the beginning of the game saying "Watch this dude" and keep it up all game long. Not complaining, not whining, just saying "Watch this dude." and explaining what rules he's breaking.
And by the way, the smart, veteran coaching move would be sending in videos to the league every week, complaining as loudly as possible that rules aren't being enforced.
If those steps (which I believe are completely within the league rules) aren't sufficient to get flags thrown for illegal acts, then the league has a severe problem.
(And if the provocative acts which some have claimed are against the rules are not in fact rule violations, then God bless players like Finnegan for doing what they do within the rules of the game.)

Finnegan is a repeat offender who'd been warned by the league.
He's been flagged during games, he's been fined b/c of video.
THe only problem is that a couple of $7500 fines aren't going to dissuade someone who's self-proclaimed ambition is to be the dirtiest player in the league from fulfilling his dream.
You're right. THe NFL has a problem b/c the rules don't crack down on dirty cheap-shot artists.
That's why I was saying they need to start getting medieval the way the NBA did regarding player-whining and technicals.

I do agree with TheCork. I rarely post b/c my interests, genuine discussion of matters football, don't seem to match the interests of most who post here.
I remember when I posted the hemmy/hammy question (days of great barroom like bluster and accusation and all in good fun!), NateinthePDX wondered if the blog had peaked. That was some 4 years ago! and the blog has continued. But what is now missing is the f-u-n and the camradie that was felt by all. Even the challenges to fight were laughed at (uh, how do you land a virtual roundhouse, anyway?). So, I think the decline of RI is directly related to the era of handhelds and the wont of children to text and msg while they should be paying attention in school. Why are adults vying for time on the swingset in the schoolyard?
PS hecklers are, as my mother would say, pussywillows. BTW, pussywillow is the root for the modern poussy that everyone thinks is obscene.

So what are we looking for outta the Skins the rest of the year? Being a koolaid drinker yet realist I do not share h8's assessment that we'll win out. I'm looking for continued improvement in learning the offense. I think our defense is topped out because of talent. I think McNabb and the offense have a way to go. I also would like to see some new blood on the oline. Would be nice to see if ANY of the young uns can stick. No way to tell that in practice (at least I can't cuz I'm not there.) A couple wins and the rest close games means that we aren't too far behind the rest of the NFC East. That's what I'm looking for. I've seen a little of it in the offense in the last few games. The first drive showed improvement yet drops and regression in playcalling doomed the rest of the game. What say you intelligent beings. The rest please scroll past (guess I shoulda put this at the beginning.)

"So what are we looking for outta the Skins the rest of the year?"
I'm looking for Shanny to continue to do what he feels like he needs to do to win this Sunday, even if that means playing some banged up players. He also needs to be either really lucky or really shrewd in choosing his match-ups against their D.
"I also would like to see some new blood on the oline."
If we lose this Sunday, then we should go into "tryout mode" and bring up youngins like Cook and Capers to see what they have. Maybe IR Torain and give Davis 12-18 touches regardless of performance against the Bucs to see what he can do when he gets into a rhythm. Continue to develop Darrel Young and Keiland Williams.
And for God's sake rest Banks, Lo, and especially Landry--no need to risk serious injury or further wear-and-tear for a lost cause. BTW, I'm not saying we should totally bail, just be selective in giving the bottom of the depth chart some PT across the board at select times.
"A couple wins and the rest close games means that we aren't too far behind the rest of the NFC East."
If we win this Sunday, then we should go on an all out push to win the NFC East. We'll need help, but I don't think a wild card is in the offing. If the stars align and about a dozen of us simultaneously sacrifice a goat at midnight on the winter solstice (or Edvar smashes ALL of his fingers in the door), we could even lose a game to Jacksonville and still win the Beast if others crap the bed.
"I've seen a little of it in the offense in the last few games."
IMO the flashes we've seen since MNF Debacle '10 have been KS disguising our weaknesses (cough! running game) for a drive or two. That said, if Cooley and Moss can get their heads straight and focus on catching the ball, we might be singing a different tune. (You know, it's the one AA sings; DMac hasn't fully learned that tune yet either).
"What say you intelligent beings."

Remember: there is no such thing as a 'can't miss pick'.
So, you gotta have some kind of established criteria.
Any player who's had 3 years as a starter in a major program in an NFL-lite offensive system is worth a top 15 selection.
The obvious choices come the time we pick? (maybe picks 7-15):
Julio Jones

I don't have any specific knowledge of this, but 980 was saying earlier that Laron's calf/achilles injury has been ongoing and is now serious; he risks a complete tear by continuing to play. That's just what they say. If we take this at face value, would you still want to play him if we can't make the playoffs? Wasn't that the beginning of the end for Jansen (or was it the freakish ankle snap?).
I'll def give you Lo, and possibly Banks--not sure what his risk is for continuing to play but dude is still the most exciting player we have.

There's been some noise up here of late about grabbing a Center in the first round (which I'm not crazy about).
Aside from Stefen Wisniewski from Penn State and maybe Kristofer O'Dowd from USC, are there any other top flight Center prospects out there that anyone's aware of?
It seems as though the draft is pretty rich with Guards this year, so we should be able to get some pretty good talent there.

This is Justin Blackmon
I read somewhere that Justin Blackmon might just be the best player in next year's draft.
We'll see.

In 11 games, he's got 102 catches, 1665 yards and 18 TDs...plus a 69-yard rushing TD...and no fumbles...
...yes, and a DUI charge...
...but Vincent Jackson has a couple of those and it's not preventing some folks up here from throwing $50 million at him...

Yes, and those people are morons. I'm not saying don't draft him because of it. I'm saying that $50 million vor VJ is ridiculous. I'm not real big on drafting a WR in the first. We need linemen on both sides. A good center can be had in the 2nd but a NT? I don't know. I am one of those "BPA" guys though.

I'm still rooting for winning the NFC East with some help, but Wildcard hopes are finished IMO.

Soooo....
The Wildcard is out, but Winning the NFC East is still on the table?
Mack1 - see what I mean?

Edvar, F you and your door jamb.
Here's the current wild card picture for the NFC:
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/standings/playoffrace
Giants have: Skins, Vikings, Iggles, Packers, Skins.
Iggles have: Texans, Giants, Vikings, and the Cowgirls twice.
Saints have: Bengals, Rams, Ravens, Falcons, Saints
Bucs have: Falcons, Skins, Lions, Seahawks, Saints
Packers have: 49s, Lions, Patriots, Giants, Bears
Seahawks have: Panthers, 49s, Falcons, Bucs, Rams
Would you take our chances vs our division (2 teams with 2 more wins than us) or the rest of the NFC, all of whom have 2 more wins than us except for New Orleans, who has 3 more wins than us (excepting NFC west, they aren't bringing two teams).
So, which way do you want to go?
BTW, I said:
"If the stars align and about a dozen of us simultaneously sacrifice a goat at midnight on the winter solstice (or Edvar smashes ALL of his fingers in the door), we could even lose a game to Jacksonville and still win the Beast if others crap the bed."

The obvious choices come the time we pick? (maybe picks 7-15):
Julio Jones
Ryan Mallet
Jake Locker

This is the only way I will deviate from Diesel44's rebuild set for seasons 2011-2012. If we ended up with a draft pick in the single digits to 15 then it has to be BPA unless we can trade down.
If we're stuck with the pick. This team has way to many needs not to get an impact player early in the draft if they can't trade back.
Considering the top 5-8 guys would be off the board we'd still have an opportunity to grab one of these impact guys.
Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford
Marcell Dareus, DE/DT, ‘Bama 3-4 DE
Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU
Nick Fairley, DE/DT, Auburn 3-4 DE
Prince Amukamara, CB, NEB
Da’Quan Bowers, DE/DT, Clemson 3-4 DE
Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas
Adrian Clayborn, DE/DT, Iowa 3-4 DE
Von Miller, DE/OLB, T A&M OLB to be paired on the other side of Orakpo
Allen Bailey, DE/DT, Miami 3-4 DE
Akeem Ayers, DE/OLB, UCLA OLB to be paired w/ #98
If they can get a late 1st and a middle second then I'd go with 3 of these guys
Mike Pouncey, G/C, Florida , Stefan Wisniewski, C/G, Penn St, Kristofer O’Dowd, C/G, USC: all three have the ability to come and start at either C or OG.
Jerelle Powe, DT, Ole Miss NT a la Vince Wilfork
Lee Ziemba, OT, Auburn: think Jon Jansen a 10 YR RT.
Quan Sturdivant, ILB, UNC
Malcom Floyd, WR, ND
Deunta Williams, FS, UNC

Edvar, forgot to mention we play 4 games against the aforementioned teams--Gints twice, Cowgirls and Bucs once respectively. That's three games in division, with one other in conference, and one more out of conference. Thus, if voodoo is legal and we use it, we could still win our division if others f*ck up something fierce. And what's our in-conference record?
F cynicism.

RomoLB - chill, I was kidding.
Personally, I don't think we have a chance at either. Not with our O line and RB situation and a D ranked dead last. Not a good formula for a late season run for glory.
Beeps talked me out of smashing my fingers, but I am willing to sacrifice a goat if it will help.
And I will be watching and rooting for the Skins ever Sunday until the biter end - much like you I suspect.

Edvar, all good. I'm pretty sure they won't, just trying to make my contribution to the jibba-jabba.

Agreed. Thanks for the goat.
No doubt about the rooting for the Skins!!

What I find interesting was Lavar's commentary on how the giants perceived the skins, having confidence that the Giants should win. He was referring to the time he was with the giants. I don't think much has changed from their standpoint since Lavar was there. They've won what 7 of last 8? I think that thought process is NFL wide. Teams see the skins and say this is our chance to rack up a 'W'. There was a period, 70-92 - where for the most part, if you went to play the skins you better have your A game or you were going to get an L - even tho there were some down record years. With this bunch, Detroit and St. Louis lick their chops. I think there's greater parity than ever but now that extra inch, that penalty, that dropped ball, that missed interception, is what appears to be the separation of W and L but maybe it really boils down to can the O-line blow anybody off the ball when needed and can the D-line(or what is is now-a-days in a 3-4) stuff the run when needed in a crucial situation, even if that is a first quarter 3rd and 1.... or a 1st quarter 1st and 10. Once they get the lines fixed, then the rest can fall into place, and we can fuss about the QB losing it (or winning it)...

Diesel - for the record, those are the same guys I've got on my draft board. I'd take any or all of them.
Also should take a look at Stephen Schilling from Michigan. He's 6-5, 310 and runs 5.1 - 40. Sounds like a guy who could do a little damage up front.
Out.

i haven't been comprehending how serious landry's injury really is, but it figures with this team that the only player to go from good to great is going to end up playing only half the year
banks? from a complete college nobody to nfl very good, but of course he had surgery during the yr and has yet to do/allowed to show much of anything on O
armstrong? from outta the nfl to solid, def solid
LoAl? solid special teamer to solid LB and great special teamer, though he's evened out the last few games, but the yr is taking a toll on everybody now
gano? hahah, ok, but it looks like the guy can really kick the football. i was shown stats comparing him to a. vinatieri in their first 2 years and their stats are almost identical w/ gano getting the nod
Rocky Mac? solid, def solid, but we already know what we r getting out of him, and i dont think any kind of 'emergence' will happen,
LF59? MVP MVP MVP, mos def the player i enjoy wearing the burgundy and gold since ST21 passed, excellent pro all around on and off the field, cant say enough about his style of play and his passion for the game
torain? solid, runs like a bull when he plays, too bad that's only 10% of the time
T-Dub? really good, the best oline we have, but he's been hurt for the past 8 games it seems and it shows
moving forward to 2011, i just dont see many players on the roster who might emerge from good to great, who i have not mentioned and i only mention LF59 b/c he's da man and rocky mac, coooooooley def too, but those drops along w/ moss r just killers, but i think that concussions f-ed up cooley
we just dont have enough draft picks and ability to find supreme talent competing w/ 31 other teams doing the same thing to be super bowl competitive next year
if we could only agree to give up on a year to rebuid, that might be what it takes, but we demand so much and super bowls every year (even though we cant win the damn division) that rebuilding has never been an option (see no draft picks really)
reality hits hard and filling our biggest needs O and D lines plus playmakers just wont be easy w/ our limited resources, that of course we have brought on ourselves
it is what it is and we may not win anything for another generation, look at the eagles, they've been really good for an entire generation and havent won sheeet
but switching teams or not watching or just plain quitting isnt an option b/c the reward for a great nfl team is just so f-in great, i was in the 3rd grade when we last one it and i still remember that season and the super bowl game itself and the moments after
we are "stuck" w/ the team we root for and im okay w/ my team being the Redskins b/c we are the f-in best at everything even though we really arent
dig in, who knows if this is the beginning, the middle or close to the end when we finally get # 4, but getting drunk and high, cooking dope meals w/ fam and friends is really what it's all about AND F DALLAS
HAIL

I ate goat once. It was in a stew in the Dominican Republic. A lot of bone for not that much meat. I didn't get to kill it myself or anything, which looking back on it now, makes it kind of a disappointment.
If the Skins win out, it has to be the no names who do it. The run after Sean Taylor's death under The Todd was like the Bad News Bears (plus a couple few of the regulars like Moss and pre-bone break Cooley plus the once great Portis). Back then, it was the Collins-Yoder show.
