The Morning Practice Report

Jason "Jasno" LaCanfora reports from the bubbleless facility:

It's sloppy and ugly out here.

Clinton Portis is nowhere to be seen; Shaun Alexander is working with the first-team offense. Ladell Betts is on the field, but it appears his participation will be limited.

Marcus Washington, Shawn Springs and Anthony Montgomery are not in pads.
Devin Thomas is sick but is attending meetings; he is not on the field for practice. Malcolm Kelly is out here despite the conditions, as is Chris Samuels.

With Springs out, DeAngelo Hall is working with the starting defense with Carlos Rogers. They are running a lot of nickel, so Fred Smoot is also out there with the first team. It remains to be seen how they divvy up the corner assignments.

...

ESPN's Stephania Bell assessed Clinton Portis' injury on her blog today. She thinks it's unlikely that he'll have the range of motion needed to play Sunday.

We need an indoor field for poor weather so the guys who are dinged can participate with out fear of sliping in mudd. I would love to see someone come up with a study of % of injuries to a team based of practice field conditions.

One day isn't enough, but if he's out there again today, then that means the knee didn't flare up from yesterday's work, so that's a good sign.

Keary Colbert was the man at USC. Great hands, like Steve Smith. Not sure why he hasn't stuck w/ a team, but he's worth a shot.
In his final year at USC, Colbert made an unbelievable catch while he was interfered by two defenders in the Rose Bowl against University of Michigan, broke away and walked into the end zone for a touchdown. Colbert's 149 yards in the Rose Bowl were a career high. Colbert left USC as the school's all-time leader in pass receptions, passing Kareem Kelly with 207.

He has caught at least one pass in his final 36 games. He earned All-Pac 10 second-team honors his senior year and finished second on the team with 69 receptions for 1,013 yards and nine touchdowns.

Practicng outside is part of the Redskin's personna. It is an advantage on gameday agaisnt teams who hide inside during the week and ahve to play outside on Sunday's. THe benefit far outweighs the risk associated with practicing on crappy days. Coaches have t obe smart about waht they try to do on terrible days such as today in DC. I think the natural grass aspect is also better than playing on a concrete under artificial surface under bubble field.

Mike Williams was awesome at USC too. Doesn't always translate to the pro level. Might be worth a look but most likely in the end a waste of time.

Updates on a couple of Skins alumni:

Bears' Lloyd back to underachieving ways?
Brandon Lloyd had more receiving yards than any other Chicago Bear over the first four games before a misstep left him with a sprained posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the injury wasn't supposed to be a season-ening long setback, just a two-to-four-week annoyance. Now, five games and six weeks later, Lloyd has reverted to his familiar role of underachiever...

Who's accountable for Jack, er, Derrick Frost?
When the cryptic Ted Thompson was asked why he favored Derrick Frost over Jon Ryan as his punter, he replied, "We're just looking for a little bit more consistency.''

Sure enough, Frost has been consistently worse than Ryan since Thompson decided to cut Ryan and sign Frost at the end of the Packers training camp.

Ryan, who's punting in Seattle, ranks No. 5 in the NFL.

Frost, who's punting his way out of Green Bay, ranks No. 23....

In case anyone is interested, looks like another typical day shaping up here on Windward Oahu. Sunny with passing cumulus, low 80's, a slight easterly breeze. In sum, it doesn't suck.

I'll be the guy under 800 layers of clothes with the tanned face at the Eagles game on the 21st of Dec.

Portis should probably sit this week and next week in Seattle. Let him be fully healthy for NYG and the stretch run. Hopefully Betts will be back for Seattle if not Sunday night. I'd rather see Rock get the carries over Alexander. Let Devin Thomas and Thrash return kickoffs.

Could somebody who's paid close attention to the corners give me a frank assessment of Smoot? Doesn't it seem likely he'll be the #2 corner if Springs doesn't play or #3 corner if Springs does play, with Hall behind him?

I haven't noticed anything on Smoot's part that would indicate he could lose his job to a dude who just arrived this week, even one with a two-Pro Bowl pedigree like Hall. But maybe I've missed something?

(Not trying to read too much into the practice depth chart -- makes great sense to work Hall hard in practice to both get him up to speed and give slighty-older-dude Smoot a little rest.)

OK..to be honest...Keary Colbert would be an upgrade over Kelly...because he can at least PLAY !! At this point in the season, any one of the "big 3" (McMullen, Mix, COlbert) would be functional because they have been in the league and can at least line up and take snaps.

Nate, he has played for the most part. Been beaten a couple times, but nothing major. The real issue I have seen with him is that he is very hesitant to put a good jam on WRs. In this defense, I think that's critical.

If Springs can't go, I won't be shocked to see Hall opposite Rogers after the first couple of series if not to start.

4th floor, "saved by zero" is a song by the British 80s band The Fixx. Other hits by them include "One Thing Leads to Another", "Red Skies", and "Stand or Fall".

For those of us who were into alternative (some call it "new wave") music of the 80s, they were pretty cool.

The 'song' used in the commercial sounds like the original song in the same way that the instrumental, muzak elevator version of Beatles' songs sound like the originals.

In fact, I have found those ads extremely annoying and hit mute or change the channel whenver they come on.

According to a report I saw recently, he is supposed to go into a halfwa house in January '09 (TWO MONTHS from now), and will be released from federal custody 4-6 months after that.

There's a chance Goodell may band him for the '09 season, but people are beginning to think since he has done his time, and as long as he can seem remorseful, he will be on someone's team in '09.......

Thanks, craig. Suffice to say that the firm of Rogers, Smoot, & Hall in any order is better than Rogers, Smoot, and [the next dude on the depth chart as of our last game].

And obviously when the senior partner is in the mix, we retain the services of the formidable firm of Springs, Rogers, Smoot & Hall. Any argument that those four would comprise the best set of four CBs in the league right now?

4th qtr--1:18 to play--down by 4---we line up in the Wildcat---

** Ball snapped to Thomas
** He fakes the reverse to Davis ( was that great play in the Clev game??)
** Thomas rolls right
** Airs it out to a wide open Kelly
** He sprints down the field but the knee gives -- he is being chased by Terrance Newman...
** All of the sudden, from his new position of Left Tackle...
** Leigh Torrance blocks Newman..!!

"Time and again this season, Derrick Frost has punted the ball well during practice, punted the ball well during pregame warmups and then gone out and laid an egg when it mattered.

It happened again on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings, when only two of Frost’s seven punts had a hang time of more than 3.4 seconds."

Dont cry for the artists, Alex. To run the music in ads, or as themes for TV shows or IN TV shows themselves. they have to negotiate the rights. The rights fall to the publisher and can be sold by the artists or songwriters. So Michael Jackson owns the Beatles cataloges and sells it to commercials for his own money (He may have had to sell the rights off).

But Pete Townshend, who wrote teh Who songs,, has made a fortune off selling Who tunes to the CSI series.

No matter "Baba OReilly (Teenage Wasteland)" was once a revolutionary anthem, now it 's used to hype forensics.

I wonder how much coaches get paid to look like idiots in these beer commercials.

By the way, next time you watch one o those, look at the way people hold their beer. No drinker I'd want to have a beer with would hold a can of beer by the very bottom like that.

I know they do it to show the label, but it looks idiotic. Of course the beer tastse like pond water, so what do you expect?

Most song rips, especially the slightly different ones (our Zero example) never pay the artists a goldanged thing.

Using someone's recorded property is one thing - performing a hook or section yourself is entirely different. The advertisers know it would cost the organizations more in legal fees than it would to persue a suit.

Basically, if you can get a hack in a studio to do something that SOUNDS like someone else's song, you're not paying rights. Especially if it's produced in a non-union state... hehe.

Tend to agree on Rock. He is so much better than Alexander at this point, plus by Zorn's own admission, 37 is having trouble learning the system which is appraently vastly different than Seattle's. Prove me wrong 37...if he is as washed up as I think, Rock will swoop in and do a serviceable job.

Let's hope it's all a moot point and Portis and/or Betts play

Not only are you an idiot, you're also a weak wannabe.

I wish you'd burn LaVar's jersey in front of LaVar!

cej, I do believe Pat Morita passed on a couple yrs back...we any chance that Larussa learned that trick?

To paraphrase the announcer in Karate Kid..."Clinton Portis is gonna play ....CLINTON PORTIS IS GONNA PLAY!!!"

'good thought' or 'your right truth' and truth would reply ' i like the cut of your jib craig' and so on and so forth...

you know its true cause who would agree with those two except himself???

ummm, lol? Don't even know where that guy stands on any of the Skins issues, nor do I care, I'm not a regular like you.

Posted by: DikShuttle | November 13, 2008 1:29 PM | Report abuse

New topic: Let's talk about the draft.

I think we should see if we can't draft a long snapper. Albright's best years are behind him. The Skins should trade him now while we can still get an early second round pick for him. Wasn't he the worst rated player in Madden a few years back?. Why are we holding on to such a cr@patasic player?

When will this FO get a clue? The Danny must go. And while we're at it get this woefuller beat writer a new job too.

(satire people, satire)

F DALLAS!
And HAIL!

I'm out.

Someone mentioned Vick is coming back next season, did the Comish actually re-instate him or is that just speculation? From what I remember, he hast to 1st get out of jail and make sure the leangle problems are over, 2nd request a hearing to be re-instated, 3rd actually get re-instated or go on probation for a season or two or be ban for life, 4th if he is ever re-instated he has to find a team willing to take the biggest PR hit since the Dayton Triangles hired Hitler’s evil twin to be their fullback, hell Hitler evil twin would be more popular than Vick now a days.

Dik - I'll have to disagree with you on this completely off topic. Rights are protected to both the writer of the song and the performer (who may or may not be the same person) and it cannot be used for economic purposes, i.e. selling a product or to give the idea that the person endorses said product. so, while the Fixx may or may not get paid b/c they are not singing in the awful commercial - the person who holds the copyright (most likely the writer of said song) would get paid.

Portis sides with Gibbs in the LaVar-Gibbs debate....

That should clear everything up......

Disgrunteled former employee = Disgrunteled FORMER employee

Well paid current employee = WELL PAID and CURRENT Employee

If you read Mosley's interview with Gibbs, you would be more satisfied with the decision he made to leave the team at the time......

Truth=annoying

coincidence?.....actually no, now a given.

I think they really like Smoot in his 3rd CB/floater role due to his size and less willingness to jam. He still plays a ton anyway. I like the Hall signing but am nervous that he might start his first week.

I don't care what anyome says, Springs is never available when needed. Any many games he "started" he has been way less than healthy. I like the dude, and he is obvie good....but we need dudes who, ya know play!

The starter at RB will be SA, he is Zorns/Stumps boy and they are serving him up the chance to show the league he can still play. We will see on the field.

I just hope he has what it takes to play for a contract next year and take his last oppurtunity now that it has presented itself: Start for old coaches on a new team with a run first mentality with a good o-line against a suspect run D in a primetime division rivalry game that is basically a playoff game.....If he lays an egg in that situation than he is truly done.

when did i appear to be gangsta'? did i say me and my boys were gonna step to his crew and cap his @ss for all the junk hes talking about my momma?

no, i merely stated that i held him in high enough esteem to buy a jersey for my son to wear, but he no longer deserves that honor.

You want to walk up to Lavar and see if you dont get arrested, go right ahead. i have no problem burning his jerseys in front of him as you suggested.

I have never pretended to be gangsta'. You must be confusing me with your own self-perceived short comings

suzanne, you're talking theory - I'm talking experience ;)

Sure, we equate the hook w/ the Fixx, but that's a tricky & expensive thing to prove in court. Not to mention the precidence is underwhelming on hooks.

If it's an actual recording it's easy to prove - not so w/ horrible cover references.

Trust me, I've done enough w/ international corporation's music in advertising to see this first hand. "Play something like this" is not going to be very actionable. It happens every day.

... hey - that's how we got BeBop... Cherokee anyone? ..or do you prefer Back home in Indiana?

Go with Alexander and Sellahs in the backfield please.

In the I.
On the screens and short check down routes.
And, on passing downs to pick up the pass rush.

Mike has good hands and will make the LBs and DBs wish they hadn't gotten out of bed.

We can run, we can pass. Yes we can!
Hail!

Don't forget the FB up the middle play w/ the big back to keep 'em honest. Mike Williams was a talent w/o the work ethic. Need more back story about Colbert's habits. He's healthy though...

Lets focus our rage on the team from Texas...who is gonna be the guy to step up that no one is expecting to step up??

I think, and I've never supported this guy for getting carries in the past, but I think Rock gets some carries and makes an impact on the game.

What say you?

A battle between 2 people on the blog who both were born out of a gimicy trait, not that there was anything wrong with it, but remember the old days when Truth would state every opinion as "The Truth" in 3rd person and Zebra would start every post with Flag, 5 yard penalty... When the blog was ruled by the fair and wise Nate's and Ditty's of the world wide web.

No offense to the Colbert fans....however...You Tube is filled with college highlight reels... guys that did it in college and not in the pros.

I would imagine I can find several Michael Westbrook, Desmon Howard, Rod Gardner, BRandon Lloyd...holy crap!! All these guys played for us !!
