What We've Learned So Far (With Jansen Update)

From Paul Tenorio:
It was hot out there on the practice field, but the coaches were getting active and involved right from the start. Special teams coach Danny Smith was barking instructions to his players during the teams drills at the start of practice and Zorn even showed his energy on one big play...more of that to come.
The rookie wide receivers didn't get any reps with Jason Campbell and the first team during 11 on 11s, but Fred Davis got out there in some sets along with Chris Cooley.
Running back Clinton Portis was rocking his yellow shoes and practicing, with only four players inactive (CB Carlos Rogers, LB Rocky McIntosh, QB Colt Brennan and S Kareem Moore).
Rogers and McIntosh, who are recovering from knee injuries, took part in individual drills on the sideline, doing some light jogging and slower drills. Brennan, who had hip surgery, stood with the quarterbacks and watched, while Zorn said Moore had his knee scoped last week but will be fine.
The Play of the Day came during 7 on 7 drills, when Jason Campbell dropped back and found wide receiver Anthony Mix down the right sideline in the back of the end zone. With a corner in his face, Mix bobbled the ball after a deflection, but hauled it in one-handed. He was out of bounds by the time he got control and nearly sprinted into the woods behind the field, but Zorn had already sprinted 10 yards down the field and screamed encouragement at Mix for the catch.
Campbell said he thought Zorn was going to tackle Campbell's former Auburn teammate when he saw him take off after the play.
"I thought he was going to run him and down and tackle him there for a second, he took after Mix like a shotgun," he said. "But that's excitement, though. You like guys that are excited about playing or coaches that are excited about being out here, excited about playing."
Zorn said the play was important because it was an example of translating a lesson learned in the building out onto the field.
"I'm very excited but that wasn't a put on or anything like that," Zorn said. "I just want to make sure that those guys, when they make that kind of effort to catch the ball and to stay with it, if you saw what he did, I said well that was just unbelievable. Now that was out of bounds, it didn't count in the game because you've got to catch it the first time, but he deserves [encouragement]. That idea we were talking about in there was 'Finish. Finish.' And he did that."
Mix saw several reps with the first team, often playing as the third receiver with Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El.
In one of the key battles to keep an eye on during training camp this summer between rookie punter Durant Brooks and incumbent Derrick Frost, there wasn't much to report. The two rotated kicks, with both booming some high, deep punts. On the final rep, however, Brooks mis-hit the ball and it lame-ducked about 15 yards shorter than any of his previous punts. The rookie didn't look happy, but again, both kickers only took about five punts, so there wasn't much to report.
The next practice will get underway at about 3:25 and run till approximately 5.

From Jason Reid:

Starting right tackle Jon Jansen, who sat out the 2007 season after he broke his leg and fractured his ankle in the first game against the Miami Dolphins, was among the veterans who were eager to begin minicamp at Redskins Park. And after the morning practice, Jansen said he had no problems with his leg.
"It feels great," he said. "I was real excited about how it handled today. I'll see how it feels tomorrow morning, but right now it's great."
While recovering season-ending surgery, Jansen missed "being with the guys in the meeting rooms, on the field in warmups, everything," he said. "This is what I love to do. I love to play football. It's been a long time."
Jansen, 32, missed the entire 2004 season because of an Achilles' tendon injury, and next season will be his 10th in the league. He said he hopes to hold up physically and contribute in what could be a big year for the Redskins under new coach Jim Zorn.
"He's brought a good feel to the team," Jansen said. "There's some new wrinkles in our offense, some new things we're doing, and I'm excited about everything. We'll open it up a little bit more [than under former coach Joe Gibbs].
"I think we're going to have a lot more weapons in the 5- to 15-yard range. We're going to be more of a rhythmic offense. Not to say we're not going to still have a power game [at times], but we'll definitely have a little more rhythm than we had before."

I think they drafted Davis with the hopes they can develope his blocking ability. i think they will use his strengths of course, but with Chris Cooley, i think they already know what they can get out of him, with Cooley its about honing his skills. Davis is a very raw right now.

Zorn said,"... That idea we were talking about in there was 'Finish. Finish.' ...."

I can relate to this. For Zorn, its about the play. For me and the girls at the dinner table, its about the vegetables.

Not worried about Davis. W/Cooley and Davis, the D has to try and figure who is going to need to be covered.

Loved this response from Cooley's blog:

8. What is the weirdest thing you have read about yourself in draft profiles?
The funniest thing I think about the draft profiles is how much people actually make stuff up. When I was a rookie people said that I would be a good blocker and possession type receiver. That my downfall is I could never stretch the field. My current profile says that I'm a bad blocker, but I can catch the ball down field. No one knows what type of player someone can really become.

Posted by: Curzon417 | May 2, 2008 2:19 PM | Report abuse

Maybe Gibbs talk will be replaced with Zorn runs and sprints.

So for example - "It was a good practice today as witnessed by J-Zo's three downfield sprints, two chest bumps and four arm windmills."

Posted by: sfskin | May 2, 2008 2:20 PM | Report abuse

FINALLY! I had to beg for this update...

While Cooley wasn't rocking the tight, biker-short-only short shorts, he did have shorts that were far shorter than any other player on the field...save for free agent pickup Jerome Mathis, whose shorts fell only about an inch longer than Cooley's.

"Rogers and McIntosh, who are recovering from knee injuries, took part in individual drills on the sideline, doing some light jogging and slower drills."

It's a very good news that both were able to do some individual drills, although it is clear that both are not healthy enough to withstand physical contact. Let's hope they don't suffer any setbacks in their recovery that appears to be ahead of the schedule.

I don't think we've had an arbitrary Quixotic post puruit in along time have we?

Dare I say 200k by Opening Day?

Interesting to hear they're doing 2 TE formations right out of the gate. That makes the TE draft selection clear.

Two big guys at TE presumably makes for some additional blockers for Soups as well.

Posted by: sfskin | May 2, 2008 2:42 PM | Report abuse

Give Fred Davis #85 in hommage to Clint Didier (he was #85 right?)

He should play to fill those great shoes.

Posted by: sfskin | May 2, 2008 2:45 PM | Report abuse

sfskin, that would be fine ... just someone to rehab its recent wasted use (Receiver, The) and keep Chad Johnson out of it.

Also, from Gary Fitz blog at the Skins site:

"Confirmed from Jim Zorn that Tyler Ecker has re-aggravated his groin. That's why he's not participating in mini-camp."

That can't be good for him, not with the new kid playing with the first team in the two TE sets. Maybe he forgot to re-sculpt the groin.

This is from Redskins' official web site:

It's nice sometimes to just be given simple, unbiased observations and the opportunity to draw your own conclusions...my feeling is that one good catch does not guarantee Mix anything and that once Thomas and Kelly are members of the team for longer than a week, they will get just as many opportunities, if not more, to shine with the 1st team. Only reason either one of them wouldn't is if he proved to be especially slow at digesting the playbook or suffered an injury.

I'm all for Mix doing well, though. The more assets the better. Also, I hope Zorn can maintain the high-energy level and enthusiasm all season and not hit the rookie wall, so to speak. This team seemed to need someone to fire them up more last year...the intensity only seemed to show up after the tragedy with Sean Taylor. RIP.

Mathis was selected to the pro bowl which is a BS game that no cares about because the voting is meaningless and done mostly byname recognition, the All Pro team is selected by sports writers and is more equitable to all-american selections.

Not so subtle innuendo and gratuitous swipe, which is also misplaced.

The threads the people complain about are the ones where Jasno directs something to The Owner or K-Ninjerrato. Jasno does give anything simple, unbiased observations about the games, the players and the coaches (except maybe re: Joe Gibbs, but that might just as easily been directed at him in his capacity as Team President as much as Head Coach).

any REDSKIN fan with the Dallas Cowcraps on the brain should chill out. there are 14 more games to played. If some asked: "do you want to be 14-2 and loose in the divisional round or be 2-14 and sweep Dallas?", I'd take the 14-2 campaign every time. I believe some would take the two wins against the cowboys team, you ask this question to dallas fans and they would say that, beating the redskins means nothing because they are nothing. i wish skins fans would have the same attitude.

dcsween-
You are a regular here, I understand, and you probably remember every post that Jasno has ever made, so I'm sure some of them have been simple observations. I've read this blog a lot since last summer, however, and I just feel that his bitterness/angst toward the ownership has become more and more pronounced in his blogging. Jasno's not trying to be subtle, and neither was I. I do respect his freedom , as a professional journalist, to decide the slant he wants to take in a forum such as this. And I'm not looking for a homer, either. I'm all for criticizing someone like Larry Michael to an even higher degree. I just like to make up my own mind, either way. But please don't act like there's no axe grinding going on.

The real P Diddy (me) who held the party at the bar with the number in it back in January only made two posts on this thread: the first one about training camp menus (a recurring theme for my preseason wishlist from the WahPo) and this one right here.

Whoever is spoofing my name may be able to capture my identity, but they'll never capture my panache and zeal for the finer things in life: Hornitos tequila and 1995 Dom Perignon, preferably with the latter as a chaser to the former.

So, rock on impersonator dude, but remember, anytime you're willing to brave the elements and step out of your cowardice, I'm there to challenge you to one hell of a night of drinking and proper punctuation.

Posted by: Official | May 2, 2008 3:33 PM | Report abuse

I did not mean to suggest that Jasno isn't grinding an axe ... and I completely concede the increase in his downerism toward and about the ownership.

My point was that, when it comes to coverage of the team, his reporting is not that way ... and that when it comes to his ARTICLES (the stuff that gets edited), his writing is some of the sports reporting I've read. [Though I judge that type of thing on one or two sentences, or even a phrase or clause,* that completely capture the essence of what's going on.]

Also, I don't think its homerism to "take sides" with the ownership over Jasno in the undercurrent (sometimes overt current) of tension btwn the two poles. I'm not a side taker myself ... its just that Jasno seems to have come to embrace some of where I was coming from originally (i.e., he took my side rather than vice versa). I am, however, preparing to lighten up on the Executive Vice President (no change yet for me on The Owner**).

* Tom Boswell, not Jasno, is the one who coined the phrase "lust for mayhem" ... and those few words are embraced on this here blog. When Boswell wrote it, however, he was referring to a whiffed tackle by Rocky MacIntosh who was going for a kill shot. [I think Jasno used the term "kill shot" in reference to a whiffed tackle by Sean Taylor that would broken Steve McNair's neck if he had actually connected.]

** You might have noticed that The Owner does not really give a crap about me either, so we're cool.

We got 275 hyperbolic words on th Play of the Day, for which everyone at the park and here was beyond excited.

Er, did I read it wrong, or was the Play of the day an Incompletion?

Wasn't the Play of the day a bobble? Recovery and catch out of bounds?

Hey don't want to throw a damp sponge on the rampant Polyannaism, but I for one would hope future Plays fo the day are COMPLETIONS!

And again a reminder for those of you who want only Good News pumped into your Happy Place, read REDSKINS.COM.

It's all good all the time over there.

That said, nice to se Mix looking good.

But there is a difference btwn being down on the team and being down on The Owner. People can love the Raiders and despise Al Davis. Al Davis is not "The Raiders" and "The Raiders" is not Al Davis. I think that Zorn should consider converting Jerome Mathis from offense to defense such as make him a Cornerback! Coach him up! Not trying to be ofensive to anyone here. But defense is what wins playoff games.

Posted by: Zeitgeist | May 2, 2008 3:40 PM | Report abuse

Corkczar, the play of the day was actually John "Angry Toe" Eubanks busting up the pass ... that Zorn sprinted downfield to hug it out with Mix was just an amusing anecdote.

That's great to hear how excited and involved in everything Zorn is, that's the type of attitude we need our entire team to have. I liked the fact that Thomas and Kelly weren't running drills with the first team know they'll now they have to work hard to crack the starting lineup or even be the third receiver.I think both of those guys are really going to push each other to get better and better. I am so excited about all the young talent we have on offense. I cant wait for the preseason to start. How much time will our Rookie trio of Davis,Kelly, and Thomas see?

The Redskins are generally in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Not for going on a playoff run, not for an earth-shattering NFC Championship win, not for anything that involves victory on the field.

Nope - the Skins are in the news for puzzling and long-winded coaching searches, for player tragedy and/or contraversy, for splashy free agent moves and for Tom Cruise and that three ring circus you Skins fans call an ownership/management team.

This was once a very proud franchise and one that I was honored to have in my division (Im a Giants fan). Here's sincerely hoping that we can get back to the class and dignity of the Jack Kent Cook era and get this team back in the national limelight for the RIGHT reasons. Lets leave the nonsense and drama to the lowlife Cowboys, who empty the jails in search of talent every year.

I can't disagree with anything you said, and I was not in anyway trying to say that I think his print articles are biased. For me though, and maybe this is just my fault, I find myself thinking about his tone on this blog every time I read his regular articles.
I'm actually very interested in the choices journalists make: the voice they choose to develop, how they decide to portray an issue that could be interpreted in different ways. It really seems to me that Jason is trying to show that he could be columnist in the future who "holds nothing back" and is not afraid to go the negative route. In reality, it's probably a shrewd career move, and I don't fault him for that.
As a Skins fan, however, I guess I am bothered by the thought that he is looking to find the negative whenever he can, seeking out sources that he hopes will criticize the team he covers. If you look at his "Draft Review" post, he heavily emphasizes negative views of the Skins draft, without providing counter-opinions, when we all know that there were many others out there who apparently thought the draft was productive, because that's what's been reported elsewhere.

In response to what Zebra asked earlier, my opinion on Jasno's 'tone' is basically in alignment with Sween's.

I think Jason's articles and reports are well-written and well balanced. I also think his posts on RI sometimes convey the disdain that he holds for some of the ownership/front office, but not to an excess.

But that's just my opinion and therefore it isn't worth any more than anyone else's.

amcginl00, sounds on.

I don't know how periodicals decide who gets to be a columnist ... seems like the newspaper equivalent of a tenured professor. Some hit (Boswell is tops in my book, but Wise sometimes gets it too), some miss (Sally Jenkins, Len Shapiro ... maybe I should say COMPLETELY miss). Others seem to be a matter of acquiring a taste ... Wilbon or Kornheiser.

Not sure where Jasno's trajectory is heading ... but I do like reading his post-game analysis and, frankly, anything he writes about the football side of football (as opposed to the business side of football). Off-season might just be too much temptation to do column rehearsals ...

Now, in the interest of getting back to getting excited about football, Zorn just said THIS:

"The thing that I was really amazed by is some of these guys have only been here a day or two and to come out, line up, not jump off sides, no fumbles, no fumbled snaps; there is kind of a victory just in that."

Posted by: Greg | May 2, 2008 4:17 PM | Report abuse

Some of you should watch last year's footage of USC TE Fred Davis. He's a complete TE, who played in pro-style offensive sets, and was awarded as the best TE in college. Granted -- he's still a NFL rookie -- who most likely requires playtime experience to adjust to the speed, power, and technique of pro players. However, he certainly can block, catch, and run over the DBs...

The questions to answer in camp are:

Is Davis better than Yoder? Is the team more dangerous offensively with both Cooley and Davis on the field in 2-TE sets? Who's the better blocker -- Cooley or Davis? Will the team keep 2 or 3 TEs on the final roster?

I like Yoder and think the Skins should keep 3 TEs, however I have no problem upgrading positions with better players. That's the normal outcome when teams draft players instead of filling holes with FAs...

Upon reading your earlier post, redcoat, I guess I did unfairly lump you in with the "if you don't like the way Jason writes then why don't you stop reading" crowd. My bad.

There's no reason to get excited about anything that happens on the first day of the first minicamp, in my opinion. But I do find it interesting at this time to ponder how the coverage of today's first practice might have been different if penned by Jasno. Perhaps something like this, but more well-written:

"Mix's circus catch today made the choice of three receivers in the second round by Vinny (your nickname here) Cerrato seem even more curious. If Mix can keep this up (and they claimed to be high on this guy earlier in the offseason) then it will be clear that the Redskins front office was extremely foolish for inflating the WR grades on their draft board just to please the owner, who is obsessed with the position."

It looks as though I missed my boy jjwilson today.
He was all over the place impersonating everybody.
For shame I say.
For shame.

I think it's all good amcginl00. I believe all voices are welcome here - no one has chased me off yet and I have no good reason to be here!

You may be right in your description of what Jasno might have written today, but we'll never know will we.

My personal opinion is that the way he flogged himself last year during the Sean Taylor tragedy, providing Skins fans with all of the information as it was happening, plus offering a focal point for people to vent their feelings about the awful situation ought to give him a pass on some of his less positive threads, but many others disagree. I'd prefer to believe better of him, but then I'm optimistic by nature - which probably doesn't come across 'up here' as they say!

These reports are a breath of fresh air! For once there are no critiques of the front office, no skepticism of Coach Zorn, no pessimistic outlook for the season.

Keep up the great blogging!
