The Next 3: The Cold, Stinky Facts

The Rams, Browns and Lions stink. Simple as that. The Rams already have fired a coach. The Lions have fired their GM. The Browns on the verge of firing a quarterback, and perhaps a whole lot more at the end of the season.

They have combined for one win, and that came when the Browns out-uglied winless Cincy in the Battle of Ohio. They do not have any discernable strengths, no calling card other than, well, losing in every fashion possible. I know that Jim Zorn says he isn't dancing a jig about playing these games, but privately, if I were him, back in his office, with no chance of it ending up on Youtube ... I'd be doing a two-step.

So, let's see where these guys rank in total offense? Cleveland is dead last (32nd), St. Louis is 30th, Detroit is 28th. Total defense? Detroit - 32nd. St. Louis - 31st. Cleveland -15th (beware the Browns).

These three outfits have been outscored 372-165. More to the point, these three teams have been clubbed, 188-66, in the first half, which means most of their points have come in garbage time after the game was effectively over.

Now, anything can happen on any given Sunday, but unless the Skins somehow turn into a turnover-machine, I can't envision them losing more than one of these games, and even giving the ball away four times to each of these teams might not be enough.

Hey guys, the "2 Live Stews" clowns on ESPN First and 10 just said the Redskins are the "least talented" team in the division and will finish 4th. One of the guys said they "can't beat the Giants or Cowboys" and said the Eagles are more talented and have a better infrastructure as a team. They say there are always teams that start hot and fall apart - they think that will be the 'Skins.

I am confused and wonder how these guys are in the sports business. Obviously these guys have just been looking at scores and not watching the games. This isn't like Gibbs 2.0 where we eeked out a win by 2 points and were relieved we won.

JW let them keep going against us. Telling us that we are the worst in the div. Makes it even more sweeter at the end.

I'll be highly disappointed if we lost more than one. Hell I'll be pretty disappointed if we even lose one. No excuses if we don't end up 7-1.

To JLC's point, I am a little worried with the Rams coming off a bye and having a new coach and new approach (even though it is Haslett), but there is no way we drop more than one, if any, barring a rash of significant injuries.

Even with one loss, that puts us 6-2 and close to the lead in the division halfway through. This is gonna be a fun season.

Most of the national media are in denial. Bunch of homers!

I think that the skins keep this level of play up and we go undefieted for 3 years.

The Eagles are done. They would have to beat us at home and win twice against the girls and g men. I don't see them doing that.

Hahaha thats excellent. I hope this kind of delusion keeps up all year...especially in opposing locker rooms.

I admit to this kinf of thinking myself over the years...msot recently last year re the Gints in the playoffs. No Way those guys make that run adn win the Superbowl. But, they did.

And upon further mental review, that team won a lot of games the same way the Redskins are winning this year. Pound the rock, play tough defense, stay together as a TEAM, and back down to NO ONE. Remeber the late seson gema agaisnt the Patriots when the Ginats played all their starters with nothing to gain? and laid it all on the line and went toe to toe for 4 quarters? The Gints were teh only ones who thought(and still think really, LOL) that they could and would win their playoff games.

I see the same type of attitude in the Redskins, and I'm loving it. They are willing to work, work, work and lay it all on the line and they trust in Zorn to Let Them Win. Best thing that happened to the Redskins was losing in NYC the first game, BUT competing the whole game. It will help them stay grounded knowing that victory...and defeat...is in THEIR hands vice the opponents.

Curz, don't want the media taking note of the Redskins. I just want them heaping praise on the G-Men, and the boy's, while we demolish both of them.

They want nothing more than to see the Redskins fail, so they can trot out the "I told you so's"....

Posted by: BeantownGreg | October 6, 2008 3:11 PM | Report abuse

Alex, LOL!!

If the Skins get overconfident with any of the next three opponents and lose, well, then they deserve it. But my guess is that these Skins are total professionals and will prepare themselves for each game never looking ahead.

Skins will win all three and may be able to give some of their reserves some valuable game time experience.

how to stop the rams, play them like we played the cowgirls. you play the run first and take away steven jackson and then you blanket torry holt. make the other people beat you. they dont have the talent to do that. you take away the run and double torry holt and hit him hard every time he touches the ball. on offense we run, run, run, and play action bombs all day.

Cleveland 15th in Total Defnese.

I think a Lot of that can be attributed to playing anemic Cincy and most importantly against the Steelers during HORRIBLE weather conditions that included rain and gale force cross winds. Steelers could not throw the ball around and the Browns could stack the box knowing it was impossible to throw.

Staying medium, I'm just saying is all.

Posted by: SkinsfaninKaneohe | October 6, 2008 3:15 PM | Report abuse

The replay rule is, if the whistle has stopped the play and the point of contention is directly related to the play being stopped(i.e., in the case of a receiver not being downed by contact, or a fumble being blown dead because the ref thought that it was an incomplete pass) then it is not reviewable.

Good GOD people!!!!!!!

Why are we still stuntin' the national media? Who cares what ANY media type has to say about the 'skins. Do we need Mike Greenberg, Colin CowTURD, or one of the doofy Stu(s) to tell US fans that we have a good football team. We shouldn't need validation from anyone, especially ESPN---known for being nothing but a bunch of front-running strokers.

St. Louis is ranked 2nd to last in rush defense, giving up at least 160 yards per game. Detroit is ranked last in rush defense giving up 180 per game.

Run the friggin ball down their throats. Time of posession, no turnowvers, run and stop the run. Damn it feels good that the Skins are more than relevant again.

Posted by: ksquare | October 6, 2008 3:20 PM | Report abuse

jw,

I used to listen to those guys in Atl when they were starting out. They are funny but well...stupid. "Skins always start out fast but fade." Perhaps the most least informed statement ever considering that two of the last three years with 5 and 4 win streaks.

Posted by: Gweez | October 6, 2008 3:21 PM | Report abuse

The Skins 6 games in division are all going to be tough, but we're done with the road ones. The toughest opponents out of the division are NO, AZ, Pitt and Baltimore. We've already beaten 2 of them ... and the others aren't exactly juggernauts.

The other six are the key. Win all these games and we're in the playoffs. Cincy, Cleveland, Seattle, SF, StL, Det. Its about staying focused. I think this is a team capable of staying focused.

From ESPN:

Running back Brian Westbrook's return to the Philadelphia Eagles' lineup may be short-lived.

Coach Andy Reid said Monday that Westbrook, who was back in the lineup after sitting out last week against Chicago with an ankle injury, broke two ribs on the eighth play of the Eagles' 23-17 loss to the Washington Redskins on Sunday.

Despite the injury, Westbrook carried the ball 12 times for 33 yards and caught six passes for 51 yards in the game.

Reid would not speculate about Westbrook's availability for the Eagles' game at San Francisco this weekend.

"We'll see how it works out for him," Reid said.

Eagles since 2004 with and without Westbrook
With Without
W-L 36-23 3-7
PPG 23.6 16.7
Rush yds PG 108.4 104.6
100-yd rushers 15 (all by Westbrook) 2

I agree with you, Red. I am just asking the question - how do these guys have jobs analyzing NFL games when it is clear they are not WATCHING NFL games?

Posted by: jwlemons | October 6, 2008 3:30 PM | Report abuse

I still think you need more than 10-6 for the playoffs this season. 11-5

Posted by: alex35332 | October 6, 2008 3:32 PM | Report abuse

Stop Jackson and double Holt, get a lead while getting 'Tana some touches, unleash J Taylor et al as the Rams try to catch up, use up 12 mins of 4 q clock running Portis, Betts, and Rock, then stay medium and grounded for the next opponent.

Posted by: SkinsfaninKaneohe | October 6, 2008 3:33 PM | Report abuse

The Skins team is really built for November/December football. As the weather turns, the Skins will become tougher. I'd be worried about the games that we play inside a dome, but I think that's just Detroit and StL. So I'm not that worried.

Posted by: zcezcest1 | October 6, 2008 3:36 PM | Report abuse

we should traid them our 6th roudner for Jackson, they seem to have no clue what they are doing in terms of personel and need to build up from the ground, but imagen that 1-2 punch we would have.

I mean reading previous threads I actually saw people moaning about how McNabb wasn't showing the 'skins any love--who cares about McNabb's opinion?

JM, I couldn't care about a single article from Sally Jenkins, a La Canfora analysis, or what two idiot twins are talking about on a disney show. ESPN is entertainment--nothing more, nothing less. They provide scores and entertainment. That's it.

I'll watch the games for myself to get my own thoughts, not what some hasbeen or clueless anchor/host is trying to shove.

Thanks, and Hail to the mother lovin' REDSKINS!

Merril Hodge on NFL Live just said the Skins were the team to beat in the NFL because of their mental toughness.

The only downside of having so many apparent cupcakes on our schedule is that our NFC East comrades are being served most of the same cupcakes. But if we keep taking care of business we'll be fine and dandy.

Remind me please who it was that hit Brian Westbrook and broke those ribs?

The Skins will stay "medium" and coast throught the next 3 teams. 7-1 sounds pretty good right about now.

First they said, JC was too slow and to dumb to run the offense.

Then they said Colt Brennan was the QB for this team...

Zorn was in over his head after the Giants game and he'd be gone by midseason.

Oh yeah...Santana Moss is not a true #1 receiver

Vinny Cerrato can't evaluate talent

JC is ok but he hasn't won a game for us

Portis is selfish.

Carlos Rogers and Rocky McIntosh won' be back until November

They said this team would be 1-4 at this point.

Yeah, they beat Dallas, but "this is the letdown week".

We shoulda never traded Champ Bailey for Clinton Portis.

They said, "nice goin' Vinny you screwed up another draft"

This "O-Line" is too old.

We have no depth...

"I've got Washington as the worst team in that division"

Oh yeah..they said...Get Bill Cowher in here.

ALL THIS NAYSAYING, ARM CHAIR GM's, FO BASHING, SECOND- GUESSING.....

I can truly say that almost all of us were wrong. Nobody saw this coming after the Giants game. Yeah, we're only 5 games in, but this team is rollin' for now.

Winning forgives all sins...
