The Nickname

The Vinny-based nickname contest drew some quality early returns. I like Stu's attempt thus far from the bunch.

His email to me read:

How about a variation on "Veni, vidi, vici"? See:,_vidi,_vici

Considering the level to which he's risen, the Latin version of "Vinny the Conqueror" or "Vinny's Conquerors" isn't entirely inappropriate. I hesitate to give you a finished version, because I didn't take Latin and it should be 'correct' as well as humorous (or intentionally incorrect).

How about the easy way out? "The Vinny Vidi Vicis" or maybe just the "Vinny Vicis"?

Too subtle, huh?

Actually, Stu, I think you are heading in the right directions. I like the Vinny Vidi Vicis (reminds me of the title to an old Hives album (Vini Vidi Vicious).

Anywho, Jason Ma suggests: Vinny's Valhalla/Valkyries/Vanguards?

Jim passed along: Cerrato's Cyclones (My editorial comment: Maybe Cerrato's Conquerers given the Latin lesson above??)

Keep 'em coming.

In the meantime, the feedback I got on email suggests that people would be thrilled if Branden Albert falls to 21 in real life, but, again, I don't see it happening in a million years. My gut is they look to trade down if the draft goes as expected in the top 20 picks, or go ahead and take Calias Campbell there (though he can be had several picks down).

For what it's worth, Vinny said today on Redskins Radio that ideally, they'd trade down out of the first round and get more picks.

Or, at least that's what I think I heard. Anyone else catch that?

I hope we get Craig Steltz in the 3rd round

He was on ESPN's First Take. He wanted to trade up in the draft for a DE. He also thought about trading down for more picks. Then he went with B. Albert.

A few posts ago, I noticed someone writing about the difference between strong safety and free safety. The origin as best as I know, comes from the offense. In days gone by, the standard offense was with 2 running backs, 2 receivers and a TE. With two backs, one side, either the left or right, had a WR and a TE, while the other side had just a WR (called flanker and split end, but that is not so relevant).

The side with the TE was called the strong side. So the LB that was on that side was the strong side LB and the safety on that side was the strong safety. Historically, it was the weak side LB that got the headlines because they were the guys that had no one directly blocking him ... so they could cover or blitz.

Anyway, I think the definition of 'strong side' has morphed with the single back, since each side of the ball can have 2 guys.

Me, swoop in and steal someones pick? Never! OK, your right, but after being married for 23 years, I forgot how to scout. :-(

How did I miss this nickname contest? Now I'm sitting here thinking of crappy nicknames instead of talking about how Lavar got screwed by the Redskins and how we should have drafted Santana Moss rather than Gardner, Rod.

and don't forget...

signing Dana Stubblefield was the downfall of Norv Turner's coaching career.

Sounds like Albert won't be around for #21. Too bad, I was really looking forward to having more domination on the line. No reciever and no safety at 21 please. Nobody worth a #1 pick at either of those positions, and I'm one of the few who feel like we need depth, not another starter at saftey. Doughty's no Taylor or Landry, but keep him close to the line of scrimmage and he does pretty good things against the run. I thought he came on pretty strong towards the end, and would much rather pick up a CB that could start as a nickel and work his way into the starting lineup.

Personally, I'm pretty close to seeing Rogers as a bust. #9 pick overall, and I have yet to see him dominate at the next level.

Of course, if Merling or Harvey fall to us, grab them and thank the draft gods. Otherwise, try and trade down or grab a CB.

Just my .02

I keep forgetting to write this. Last year there were very few post-June 1 cap casualties. It seems like most of the roster cuts of veterans happened right after the draft. Maybe that's because of the ability of clubs to designate 2 cuts as post-June 1st types now. In any case, Vinny needs to be ready to sign vets right after the draft this year. Waiting until June 1st could leave a team out of luck.

Sween - Just read the Mock Draft post. I usually skip Mock Drafts now-a-days because I can't afford to waste so much hot air....

Re: 5 Games PLayed in Preseason -

Have you noticed that our last 3 new Head coaches had 5 preseason games to play in their repective 1st year? Spurrier (Japan), Gibbs 2.1 (HOF Game with season ending Jansen injury), and now Zorn.

Coincidence? I think not. Thanks to Dan Snyder being a key member on the HOF commitee.....
