The Reception for Gregg Williams

Jason Reid reports:

Not surprisingly, Gregg Williams, Washington's former assistant head coach-defense, was the center of attention during pregame warm-ups at FedEx Field.

Many Redskins players hugged Williams, now Jacksonville's top defensive coach, and chatted with him as he stood near the Redskins' emblem at the 50-yard line. Cornerback Shawn Springs and strong safety Reed Doughty were among the first players to greet Williams as he emerged from the tunnel.

Strong-side linebacker Marcus Washington and defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin did not stop smiling as they reminisced with Williams. Middle linebacker London Fletcher, who also played under Williams when he was the head coach in Buffalo, came up from behind Williams, tapped him on the shoulder and then gave him a big hug. They had a lengthy conversation.

New defensive coordinator Greg Blache, who coached the defensive line for four seasons as part of Williams's staff, exchanged pleasantries with his former boss, too. Blache recently acknowledged he and Williams have not been close since Blache agreed to accept the job Williams still occupied before owner Daniel Snyder informed him he would be let go.

Snyder and Vinny Cerrato, Washington's executive vice president of football operations, shared some laughs with Williams. Cerrato played a key role in the monthlong coaching search that led to top assistants Williams - considered the choice of many fans and players to replace Gibbs - and Al Saunders being forced out, stirring speculation Cerrato was the source behind news reports that Williams had been disrespectful to former head coach Gibbs during the interview process (Cerrato denied involvement). After hiring Zorn as offensive coordinator on Jan. 25, Snyder promoted him to head coach on Feb. 9

"Make no mistake about it Greg Williams was shafted with the head coaching job of the Redskins"

LaVar doesn't waste a second sticking it the Snyder. Gregg Williams wouldn't let him on the field.

WILLIAMS WALKS AGAIN
Posted by Mike Florio on August 28, 2008, 6:50 p.m. EDT
Texans receiver Harry Williams has walked on his own, for the first time since suffering a C-3 fracture in his neck on Friday.

“I started walking today. I brushed my own teeth today, sat up in a chair today, fed myself today,” Williams told KRIH-TV in Houston. “I’m doing good man.”

Pass D, not so much.

So far, Fincher makes the team based on his performance tonight.

What happend on that pick?

Posted by: stuck at work | August 28, 2008 7:21 PM | Report abuse

This game is meant to BOOST the offense's confidence, right?

Posted by: Alan | August 28, 2008 7:22 PM | Report abuse

Noticed Richardson almost lined up offsides 2x.

Posted by: Alex35332 | August 28, 2008 7:22 PM | Report abuse

That's where Tryon's size kills you... Williams just bumped him off coming over the middle and got two yards of separation out of it.
Easy TD.

Posted by: cload & daggar | August 28, 2008 7:22 PM | Report abuse

Wow, Fincher is really making a statement. He's done nothing but make plays. He's an animal.

Posted by: frediefritz | August 28, 2008 7:22 PM | Report abuse

Camp hit Thomass right in the chest. Bounced off Thomas and a OLB grabbed it.

Devin who?

Posted by: Curzon417 | August 28, 2008 7:24 PM | Report abuse

The pick was a good throw, plenty of time in the pocket, easy catch coming up but Devin tried to let the ball come to him, the CB closed well, ball bounced up and into the hands of the LB.
Devin wasn't wide open, but he takes the blame in my book.

Posted by: cload & daggar | August 28, 2008 7:25 PM | Report abuse

Handoff to Mason for 2.

Posted by: Cindy | August 28, 2008 7:25 PM | Report abuse

Mason again around left end for 5.

Posted by: Jonathan | August 28, 2008 7:33 PM | Report abuse

The offense can stay in the whole 1st half, at this rate. JC's only thrown twice (0-2). Mason has 2 rushes. I guess they can solve the punting riddle, as Frost punts another 50 yarder inside the 20 (like he'll actually do that in the real games!). I hope the new guy brings his Big Boot today, I hate relying on Frostie.

Isn't Tryon the one that was talking trash when he got drafted?

Posted by: Rusty | August 28, 2008 7:54 PM | Report abuse

Well, this is certainly going to be a long, long season, huh?

Posted by: P Diddy | August 28, 2008 7:51 PM

Ask me in late January... when we're jabba-ing about the FA market. No, not long enough.

Posted by: cload & daggar | August 28, 2008 7:54 PM | Report abuse

Tryon again.
they pick on him
They know he is no good.

Why did we draft this guy? He is small and not aggressive.
Both of those and you are doomed to FAILURE

Posted by: RedskinRay1 | August 28, 2008 7:51 PM

I think 'cause he talks smack like Smoot. Problem is, he doesn't back it up like Smoot.

Because he set the Big-10 record last year.

Didn't realize I could watch the game on tv... Guess that's it for the First Team Offense.

MAN, ZORN LOOKS PISSED!!!!

Posted by: Skins Fan In Da Ville | August 28, 2008 7:55 PM | Report abuse

Tryon... what a joke!

No first downs, 3 yards passing against the second team "D."

Wow this team sucks.

Posted by: Redskinrex | August 28, 2008 7:56 PM | Report abuse

Why can't every swingin' soul just fight their guts out like old times?

Posted by: Alan | August 28, 2008 7:56 PM | Report abuse

@GAD
With all due respect I think Zorn looks more pissed than lost. I'm really curious what this does to Campbell's confidence? Yes it's only pre-season but either he's going to be tested by either letting it rattle him or he's gonna come out and play like he's out to prove something next week against the Giants.

Where you been, Diddy?

@Talent Evaluator
That's right he did lead the league. Even so with the injury he was coming off of I'm not so sure I'd have him back there taking kicks but hey he's got to get in the flow not just on offense - so be it. Thanks again.

Devin stops or slows down everytime he is going to get hit. Should not be returning punts at this point.

Posted by: frediefritz | August 28, 2008 8:00 PM | Report abuse

I watched the Giants play the Jets and their defense still looks great even without the pro-bowl DE's.

It's going to be a nightmare. If it's even competitive, I'll be shocked.

Haha well if Cartwright were in he'd be fielding the kickoffs. Hey as far as Mix and McMullen - it's nice to have depth and height. Good times.

Well the offense didn't get it's rhythm tonight. Either way - let's hope things are different next week when ALL the starters are playing. Again folks - not every offensive starter was in.

Get out of this game and the real season begins. Hail.

JC was on target all night. He's not out there to catch the ball. All he can do is put it on target. Then its up to the receiver to catch it. Santana catches that first pass, that ended up as an interception. The ball cooley dropped was close to a reception, close enough for a replay objection.
