The Rest Of The Inactives

Marcus Washington (hamstring) is out and for the Jets, Laveranues Coles (concussion) is out, too.
Mike Pucillo (back) is out after suffering the injury in practice this week (is it just me or is getting listed as "probable" by the Redskins the new kiss of death? Awful liberal definition of probable going on around there).

Also for the Skins, David Macklin is down, which means John Eubanks is playing after being activated from the practice squad. Randy Thomas (triceps) is still hurt and healthy scratches are Ryan Boschetti, Kevin Sampson, and, as we've already established, Boggin B-Lloyd is back in NoVa, probably cutting a rap record in his basement or something. With Lloyd out, and James Thrash playing but recovering from a hamstring issue, you would think Keenan McCardell gets a decent chance to get back on the field today.

Rick DeMulling is up and he told me he had been working on some tackle eligible stuff, so I am guessing that he takes Pucillo's spot in the jumbo package, though that could be Stephon Heyer as well.

Also, Rock Cartwright is back, so that should boost the return game.

I fear this is the beginning of the end for our intrepid reciever. Good riddance. No Coles should help us.

So who won the pool? I was well into the 2nd half of the season, so I know it was not me.

Posted by: CBT | November 4, 2007 1:01 PM | Report abuse

So, are CBs are: Shawn Springs, Fred Smoot (hammy problem), Leigh Torrence, and John Eubanks?!?! That scares me, I dont care what team we are playing. I guess we will see alot of Prilou in DB situations. I cant spell his name I'm sorry.

And maybe Lloyd is just practicing extra hard this weekend, not making a mix tape. You NEVER know.

Yet another Sports Bog reference?

Posted by: bobzmuda | November 4, 2007 1:15 PM | Report abuse

Ok - I know how to fix the 'Skins coaching/front office problems!!

I believe a majority of us agree that the front office problems center around the lack of a strong general manager.

I believe part of the coaching problems is the lack of a strong central figure. Gibbs wearing too many hats has been a topic for complaint here also.

Charlie Casserly is working for CBS! He desplays his accumen weekly, must get partial credit for the talent over in Smokey San Diego, and has a working relationship with Gibbs.

Danny! Why don't you dump that no good Cerrato & bring in another one of your heroes!

Casserly for GM!

Hail!

TheCindy? That's what they gave you on registration? The same first name as The Danny?

Talk to Jasno -- I'm betting he can get you a better deal like CindyInTheDCA or dccindy.

Did we rule out a hammy or groin pull for the receiver? It's not like him to give up before a game -- he usually waits until the ball's in the air.

I took TheCindy in a fit of pique at the registration system and at all the imposters. I don't mind the time change. I like the falling forward thing. Or whatever it is that we do.

Greetings from Barcelona! I am in place for the game. It is early evening here, which means people are napping to prepare for the usual 10pm dinnertime. I am, of course, up and ready to watch the football (not the futbol). Hung out last night with some of the chaps from FC Barcelona. Nice guys. Hard to believe they are athletes.

In any event, my Slingbox has failed me and because I use a Mac, I cannot use the DirecTV Sunday Ticket over the Internets. So, I've had to go with Plan C and buy a weekend pass on Yahoo's NFL Game Pass. I have no faith in Al Gore's Internets, so there is a chance I will lose access to the game in short order. I also have no faith that the stream will be "live". Oh well, more tapas and sangria, por favor.

Quick review of NFL Game Pass: great idea, actually pretty high quality broadcast, and really love that you even get the commercials. That's really cool, particularly, I'd assume, if you're an expat overseas with a wee bit of homesickness. $29.95/week is a bit steep, but if you need your fix, you need your fix, I suppose.

I have a few issues with the broadcast, but I suspect that's because I'm forced to run a beta of Flip4Mac on my Mac.

If you're not in North America and are desperate for the games, you need this. http://sports.yahoo.com/nflgamepass

Posted by: RightWay | November 4, 2007 2:28 PM | Report abuse

Not being a pessimist just years of being tainted. Redskins supposedly have one of the best Defense in the league against one of the worst teams starting a rookie QB and they are maintaining a drive longer than 80% of the drives we have had this year. After saying all that I am in no way surprised nor will i be, just expectations have been low after the past several years yet the team finds new ways to let us down

Posted by: mofass79 | November 4, 2007 2:28 PM | Report abuse

I can't believe people are still defending this lackluster coaching staff.

Joe Fibbs is the worst; he wanted to be GM, coach etc. He was a successful coach the first time around but he had a GM named Beatherd. He should have insisted that Snyder give him a GM, he is reaping what he has sown.

Posted by: DavidAu | November 4, 2007 2:28 PM | Report abuse

More bad coaching, instead of a sack, I would have a coached a fumble or interception!

Posted by: noone.from.tampa | November 4, 2007 2:29 PM | Report abuse

If LaRon wouldn't have had that penalty then they would have had to punt. I guess that was the coaches fault too.

Defense gives up 3 points. Fire Al Saunders!!

Network flaked out on me here in the hotel. Can someone summarize the redzone situation there?

Posted by: PDiddy | November 4, 2007 2:30 PM | Report abuse

This looks like trouble. 69 yards in almost 8 minutes. Mangini is capitalizing on what the Pats exposed last week. They need to toughen up now!

Posted by: Soups1 | November 4, 2007 2:31 PM | Report abuse

You know, a half-decent coach would have told them to block that FG. Gibbs must go, preferrably before halftime.

Nothing that happens on the field has anything to do with the players, it's all the coaches. I don't know why they even bother to bring the players to the games.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | November 4, 2007 2:31 PM | Report abuse

I confess I am troubled by the way the Jets (the Jets!) marched down the field and burnt up the clock. Redskins need to to do the same thing themselves now. And get more than an FG.

Posted by: TheCindy | November 4, 2007 2:31 PM | Report abuse

1st down run for minimal gain. 2nd down incomplete pass. 3rd down sack. Jets kick FG.

Posted by: bigfish | November 4, 2007 2:32 PM | Report abuse

Hmmm not sure if holding a 1-7 team to 3 ponts is an accomplishment or not.

Let's see what the o comes out with. I'm hoping the d stops leaving those underneath passes open all the time.

Posted by: sfskin | November 4, 2007 2:33 PM | Report abuse

If "Mr." Snyder were to march down there and replace St. Joe, do you think he'd have enough time to get Redskins One to fly Coach Cowher in? I don't think you can fire St. Joe unless you have a successor in place. If it were a Sunday night game, I'd nominate Madden, for sure. I have an Xbox 360, and I must say, I am continually impressed with Madden's playbook, though, to be fair, several a 13 year old can outcoach the old bugger.

Posted by: PDiddy | November 4, 2007 2:34 PM | Report abuse

Just hope they dont throw deep, the way they keep scoring in bunches the deep pass is entirely unnecessary

Posted by: mofass79 | November 4, 2007 2:35 PM | Report abuse

You can't fire Joe Gibbs in the middle of the season when he has a winning record!

Posted by: TheCindy | November 4, 2007 2:36 PM | Report abuse

Who's the worse owner, Dan Snyder or Peter Angelos?

Posted by: Poopy_McPoop | November 4, 2007 2:36 PM | Report abuse

Okay I'm starting to think that the shotgun is needed more. I don't remember who said it last week but the timing is necessary. When Soups is under center he has no time or feels he has no time to look down field so dinks and dunks is what he falls back on.

The Jets secondary isn't all that and a bag of chips right? So we should be able to go downfield more but if Soups doesn't feel he has the time . . . am I seeing things too black and white on this?

Posted by: sfskin | November 4, 2007 2:37 PM | Report abuse

Anybody guess we'd be down 10-3 after the 1st quarter to the Jets? Anybody? Nope, I'm guessing not. Safe to say not a good quarter for St. Joe. We're keeping score.

Posted by: Soups1 | November 4, 2007 2:37 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: mmz114 | November 4, 2007 2:51 PM | Report abuse

The deadskins could still come back to win, but they should not be playing catch up to a 1-7 team.

Posted by: DavidAu | November 4, 2007 2:51 PM | Report abuse

Hate to agree, but 14 points, thats more than we average a game...how are we going to make that up

4-12, still prescient :-)

We are so SJKed.

So far rhe defense looks confused. This is 2nd year QB with his 2nd start. Oh, they also aren't tackling worth a crap.

Gibbs gas to get a flat team up foe the 2nd half. They did not come to play this game.

The Jets are 1-7.

This is a MUST WIN game!!!

Posted by: gdennie | November 4, 2007 2:52 PM | Report abuse

I believe that was an 80-yard drive on our vaunted D. By a second-start quarterback, no less. The wheels have officially come off. If Gibbs loses this game, it means he's lost this team.

Posted by: Soups1 | November 4, 2007 2:52 PM | Report abuse

Al Saunders: Um on page 645...i have a play where we throw a screen pass to Moss for a 1 yard gain

Gibbs: thats why i got you on the staff and made you the highest paid coordinator

Saunder: thanks Joe

At least we still have our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks....

Posted by: gregmarino88 | November 4, 2007 2:53 PM | Report abuse

The 'Skins are losing to a team with a *Schottenheimer* on the sideline! WTF!?

Posted by: PDiddy | November 4, 2007 2:54 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: DavidAu | November 4, 2007 2:54 PM | Report abuse

Campbell fumbles and Jets return it for a TD

Over is looking better all of the time. Skins are still gonna win, no problem.

Posted by: captjim | November 4, 2007 2:56 PM | Report abuse

my prediction, run for 1 yard, run for -2 yards, then pass to Sellers for 3 yards

Posted by: gregmarino88 | November 4, 2007 2:56 PM | Report abuse

At least we still have our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks....

Posted by: gregmarino88 | November 4, 2007 02:53 PM

Joe Gibbs trade his 1st 2nd and 3rd round picks next year for the 4th round draft pick of the Chicago bear..

Gibbs is quoted as saying he's got his eye on someone in the 4th round that will turn this thing around.

Posted by: mmz114 | November 4, 2007 2:56 PM | Report abuse

prediciton for this drive:

run up the gut = 2 yard gain
reverse = 4 yard loss
screen pass = 3 yard loss

Posted by: Poopy_McPoop | November 4, 2007 2:56 PM | Report abuse

Maybe this is a good thing....

Gibbs 2.4 may (HOPEFULLY) will let Saunders call some plays that will throw the ball down the field......

In other news:
Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler was sidelined with an injury to his lower left leg early in the second quarter Sunday against the Detroit Lions.
Cutler left the game when his legs and ankles were twisted as Shaun Rogers sacked him, then another Lion hit him as he was going down. Cutler was helped off the field and was later taken off it on a cart as he unstrapped his shoulder pads.
Patrick Ramsey replaced him, then completed his first pass of the season to give the Broncos a first down.

He only plays the ball if there's a return, yet he is not someone you normally use for returning.

If you wanted to return it, shouldn't you have used Thrash or Cartwright?

Now let's see if a fired up Redskins team comes out for the second half. They rae just down a touchdown and should put the Jets away.

Posted by: DavidAu | November 4, 2007 3:33 PM | Report abuse

Useless interesting stat: out of 18 NFL teams currently playing, the Skins have more points than 8 of them going into halftime.

Why? Because Suisham is kicking his guts out!

>>> "I miss the 80s"

Funny thing. I'm on the road with a co-worker who has two teenage girls. Apparently, leg warmers are back in style and a Grease-like musical is really popular. The 80s are back. Next thing you know, Hollywood will make a movie about a "re-imagined" Max Headroom (3-D Virtual Max Headroom!). No writers necessary for that script, it practically writes itself!

The way Portis is running I would sadly expect them to stick with him in the 2nd half.

Posted by: bigfish | November 4, 2007 3:38 PM | Report abuse

I liked the last two drives from the offense. This is what we have been looking for all season. Portis looked good running. I knoow the Jets have own of the worst run defense's in the league but I think if the offense picks up where we left off and the defense throws in some more stunts and blitz packages Clemens will get rattled. Lul the Jets to sleep with the run defense. All Sellars has to do is catch that ball and then he starts the steamroller. We were just a couple of mishaps and plays away from the lead. Hope they can get the momentum back in second half. Time to go!

To help you answer that question, follow this link to the Youtube video where Westbrook sucker-punched Stephen Davis, then hit him repeatedly while he was down.

BLloyd doesn't get any balls thrown his way, while Westbrook was supposedly a #1 wideout (4th pick in the draft, right?). But Lloyd's teammates actually seem to like him... I don't think Westbrook had many friends on the team.

I blame BLloyd's situation on coaching, to a degree. He doesn't have the best attitude, but I think he's being Arrington'd.

Westbrook was given EVERY opportunity, and I think he was just a cancer on the team most of the time he was here.

C'mon, we all know that was Joe Gibbs fault.

Posted by: Poopy_McPoop | November 4, 2007 4:04 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: RedskinRay1 | November 4, 2007 4:32 PM | Report abuse

Redskins aren't playing horribly on either side of the ball, but I think it more shows that while the Jets have a lot of fight in them, they aren't a very good team.

They're a damn good 1-7 team if you ask me.

As their respective offensive and defensive rankings will attest.

The Arizona win felt like a loss and this game feels like a loss too. A win is a win is a win but the 'Skins strugling with this team is drawing me closer to the realization that the Skins just aren't as good as I first believed.

Posted by: swowra | November 4, 2007 4:57 PM | Report abuse

I will bet you any amount of money that Gibbs call 3 and out if they get the ball in OT.

Then the Jets march down the field and win it.

Then Gibbs go "I am so proud to be an idiot"

Gibbs plays not to lose nowadays. He has no killer instinct, and neither does his team. He's become a coward as a coach. Williams now coaches that way.

Very, very sad.

Grande Pescado - any hints on former self?

Posted by: sfskin | November 4, 2007 5:01 PM | Report abuse

Up 20-17 we run 6 times in a row and have to punt. That is why we are going into OT now.

Posted by: bigfish | November 4, 2007 5:01 PM | Report abuse

Yes. In OT we take a knee. It would be to risky to run a play because we might fumble or get intercepted, and then the Jets will have good field position. Better to let the defense win it because they are playing so well!

That message was sent up to Al.

Posted by: spotter | November 4, 2007 5:21 PM | Report abuse

So, gdennie, Riggo44, mofass79, mmz114 -- when we're losing it's the coaches' fault. Does that mean that when we win it's because of the coaches? Or do the players win and the coaches lose?

We're about to get scored on again by a 1-7 team. We'll be down 10-3 or 14-3. that is due to coaching. Get a clue!

Posted by: kost52 | November 4, 2007 5:25 PM | Report abuse

So hopefully now all of the "Start Betts" talk will quiet down. All along I thought it was the o-line that was the problem, not Portis.

The fact that they were able to run the ball so well today really gives me hope for the offense as the season goes on. It shows that the offensive line is coming together (albeit against a poor Jets run defense), and it allows the offense to (hopefully) open things up a bit in the next few games.

Hopefully the running game this week was the catalyst that the entire offense needed to turn it up a notch.

I'm not upset with the 6 and out at the end of the 4th. I don't think it was conservative calling, running down the clock. I just thought the run had been working all day, lets stick to it.

Posted by: kost52 | November 4, 2007 5:27 PM | Report abuse

swb: I think its reading into it a lot.

The Jet's run defefense was horrible. How many really short gains were turned into modest gains. Those aren't due to the O-Line, but to ineptence on the D-Line.

captjim dont u have anything better to do?

Posted by: Poopy_McPoop | November 4, 2007 5:31 PM | Report abuse

Spotter, that is certainly true.

I still think that this was the kind of game that can really boost the confidence of the entire offense. Other teams aren't just going to ignore what the Redskins did on the ground today, so it should open things up, if only just a bit.

Was it not encouraging that the Redskins didn't pack it in when they were down 17-3? Was it not encouraging that the defense was able to lean at least a little bit on the offense this game?

Just the fact that the Redskins were able to put together solid drives and actually score points is encouraging. Of course there was still a lot of ugly stuff in that game, but compared to the previous few games, it was certainly a positive.

I could keep calling the rest of you out all day like I did before this game. Root for your team and stop being a bunch of women. We rooted for them in Griffith Stadium and RFK. Don't let the new stadium and group of fans be like what happened to Memorial Stadium's fans.

Tradition is more importat than looking cool in a blog. Remember the old guys.

I'm someone who has been there and I care about the Redskins tradition. I'm calling you guys out because you wouldn't be here if you didn't care. Positive karma works. Remember George Allen and The Over The Hill Gang? Probably before your time, but he made us think we could win no matter how old we were. How sad it is when you are celebrating a lucky win against a ONE WIN team...

Sure I want to feel good about the Redskins...but everyone knows they win one game and then tank next one.

Especially they like to tank against NFC East opponents.

What is wrong with a win? Maybe it was ugly. Maybe it was against a perceived inferior team. But it was on the road. And it was a win. Do you know what it is like to ride on a bus for hours early in the morning and go into a hostile field to challenge the home team to a match of football?

It was and is a win. Just like the Pats field was a loss. How many of you that criticize this team have suited up, gotten on a bus, rode for hours, played a professional team on a hostile field?

It's very easy to sit behind a keyboard and criticize but when the angry seas bite you, your perspective changes.

I have an idea - lets have JC through 50 times a game and have registration for the most popular blog on the post.

I'm sorry you want to be negative and see things that way. Being a true Redskins fan I guess I see things differently.

The references I made to riding into another teams' football field early in the morning were based on my high school experiences many, many moons ago. I should have been more specific.

I played for Severn High School. We sucked. We got our butts kicked by much bigger dudes all the time. I did not make a college team but I tried. For the 30 years since then, I've been a FAN of those guys that made it.

How 'bout you, Mr. Negative?

Posted by: captjim | November 4, 2007 7:24 PM | Report abuse

I'm not sure I get what the issue is with *today's* win. The defense gave up 13 points. That's it. For the first time this season, we had a viable running game. For the first time this season, the offense overcame a 2 touchdown deficit. And, the offense put more than 20 points on the board.

It wasn't pretty, but style points don't add to the total in the win column, do they?

So, you'll have to pardon me if I don't feel like the world's about to end because my favorite team put up more points than their opponent today and are now 5-3. To me, that makes a good day. Who ever thought the day would come when there would be people who try to make you feel like you should apologize for being happy that your team wins?

On a side note, 4-12, will you now be 5-11? ;-)

Another underwhelming performance....I suppose the Kool-Aid will be guzzled after the team managed to crawl out of NY with a win against a 1-7 team with a rookie QB. I don't belive the NYG and Dallas and PHL will be impressed with how the team recovered from its dismantling a week ago. Enjoy 5-3..it won't last long. How on earth could the Skins fall behind 17-3 to such a sorry outfit and then survive in OT. Of course.....that must be a return to "Redskin football." What a ruse.

Do you think it's "cool" to sit behind a keyboard and criticize guys that pour their guts out for a win? Granted, players these days don't play as hard as they used to, but money changes everything.

Take for example this guy Lloyd who doesn't want to play because he's not getting enough passes his way. He's making millions of dollars, heck, I'd do ANYTHING for that kind of money, especially play football.

I'll bring up Dave Butz, a Redskins noseguard who p[layed the 2nd half of a game in RFK with a broken leg. I don't even remember if the Skins even won, but I will always remember his courage.

The only thing that can make this week much better is the obvious Philly win, Dallas loss. I can't wait to be a jerk to our resident Patriots fan at work tomorrow! And yeah it wasn't a pretty loss but the D was great, you can't count that run back against them. And the O was much better than normal, they didn't finish everything but they marched it down the field. Great running, good execution all around!

Denver had the snot beat out of them by Detroit, but Patrick Ramsey had a pretty good game for Denver:
"Ramsey completed 29 of 46 passes for 262 yards with a TD pass to Brandon Stokley, an interception and a fumble. Brandon Marshall caught nine passes for 96 yards, but dropped three passes on one drive alone."

TJ Duckett did alright for Detroit, too:
5 rushes, 48 yards (9.6 avg) and 1 TD.

Also the pass D is reverting back to 2006 form. That scares me especially facing the pass happy Eagles next week. They need to get the WR's involved early in the game too. True the D only gave up 13 points, but if it wasn't for numerous Jet mistakes it should of been more. At least I get to sleep tonight knowing the Skins are 5-3...

Posted by: ga8085 | November 4, 2007 8:19 PM | Report abuse

Oh, and as for the game, the Skins should be embarrassed that they played this poorly against a team with only one win. The offense is the most boring in the league.

And I'm getting a little tired of JC's repeated mistakes and errors. He still stares down receivers at times. He doesn't throw until receivers have broken. He misses big-play throws. He needs to fix some of his own problems.

Posted by: CDon | November 4, 2007 8:21 PM | Report abuse

ga8085,
our D's only real big mistake was the head to head from "da ron" to clemens on 3rd down. that let them keep the drive alive and score a touchdown. other than that they only gave up the field goal, and that's not too bad seeing as we didn't have much info on clemens.

You know, Jets have a terrible record, but they've only lost by more than a touchdown 3 times this year: to NE (by 24), NYG (by 11), and Buffalo (by 10). They've been pretty close in all their games, except NE.

Posted by: Alan4 | November 4, 2007 9:01 PM | Report abuse

Not a "great" win in terms of execution or performance, but a HUGE win - 4-4 would've been a "tight spot, tight spot!!", especially without any Dapper Dan. Does anybody else see a glaring need for a big, physical receiver?? We have no options inside the 10 other than Cooley. God love 47, he is a beast, but he's just one man. I think losing 22 showed today, as much as everyone wants to bash 'Los, he's still a legit corner in this league. Smoot played well. LaRon continues to morph into "Optimus Prime" (that was hilarious, filmchis). Taylor is still the reaper. Not enough pressure from the front four, but all in all a decent effort stopping the run. Campbell is close to becoming a very good QB. HTTR

Posted by: lmgaffney | November 4, 2007 9:07 PM | Report abuse

Every week I post the same comment, the Redskins are a good team not a great team. The difference between a good team and a not good team in the NFL is between 3 & 6 points, basically a field goal or a touchdown. Don't expect them to beat teams by 2 or 3 touchdowns won't happen except if the other team self destructs (see Lions game).

The coaching is also good not great especially on the offensive side of the ball. Gibbs does not trust Campbell to take the game on his shoulders. They are bringing him along very slowly. I wish I knew why, because the kids seems to have what it takes to play at this level. Williams has game planned very well this season. With some good offense in the Giants and Packers games, they are 7-1 not 5-3. And that's not drinking the Kool-Aid.

If they can go 5-3 in the second half of the season, that put's them at 10-6 with a shot at the playoffs. They have beat the Lions & Cardinals, need to beat the Bucs, Bears & Vikings. That will give the Skins a major edge in tie breakers. Getting into the playoffs is what it is all about!

p.s. Forgot to mention, the defense has given up like 3 or 4 TDs when the drive was extended by a stupid penalty. Those have also changed the face of several games.

Ricky Bobby here. Too lazy to sign out and sign in under RB.

Anyway, I'm usually known for my negativity but here are my thoughts on today's win.

UGLY. Frustrating. Heart palpitations. I also thought Gibbs single-handedly let the Jets force OT with his atrocious/conservative play calling late in the game.

But we won... and we're 5-3, which is exactly where I wanted this team to be before the season. The next marker for me was 6-4, with a chance to go 7-4/8-4 at Tampa and vs. Buffalo. This is all very possible.

Again, 4 or 5 more yards by the Jets, and a FG in OT, and I'm calling for Gibbs' head louder than I ever have before... heck, I'm still calling for his head because I thought his play calling late in that game was chicken shart and could have easily cost us the game. But we're right were I hoped we'd be... and I guess that's all you can ask for, right?

So, for weeks we've been complaining about getting ahead and giving up a lead. And, justifiably so. Now, we get way behind, catch up, and win it in overtime. Sure enough, the haters come out and complain again.

I'll say this. At least Gibbs didn't run up the score the way Belichick did last week.

bigfish,

no doubt...

but for the record, just because it's Ricky Bobby here, I still think Gibbs needs to get out of 1987. The onside kick was a great step, but the conservative play-calling late in the game when we're up single digits is flat out archaic, idiotic, and reckless behavior. he's lost us sooooo many games by doing that and we almost added another one today.

I also think Gibbs needs to get over the San Diego game in '05. Yes, I still bring it up, but he coaches like that game was the defining moment of his coaching career. Remember sending Suisham in for a 40 yarder in the opener on 1st down? Remember him running 3 straight to set up a 46 yard field goal today??????? Not 26, 46 yards... that is insane, and again, ancient coaching. Yes, Rabach had a penalty against SD in '05 to cost us a game, but that can't define ALL of your late game coaching decisions for the rest of your life. It almost cost us today, and if he doesn't change, it's going to really cost us later on.

Campbell should watch the Dallas game tonight and take note of Romo's pocket awareness. It's freakin ridiculous. Barber is a cyborg, that dude seems unstoppable. Can't wait in two weeks for the big showdown, it will take more than field goals and 3rd and long runs to beat that team.

talent evaluator,

Ricky Bobby here. are you insane with that last post? run up the score? we were up 3 points, and instead of closing out the game by being aggressive, Gibbs gives them the ball back like he was handing out candy to trick or treaters and lets them tie (almost win) the game.

you can't be serious.

Posted by: johnw | November 4, 2007 9:54 PM | Report abuse

RB, I agree with the craptastic play calling in the 4th. I commented about it earlier. 6 runs in a row in the 4th with a 3 point lead ending up in a punt was pathetic. I'd probably be leaning more towards calling for his head myself if it weren't for the win but right now I'll take em however we can get em. 5-3 at midpoint in the season was more than I expected a few months ago.

You're right, I wasn't. And I wouldn't be disappointed to see Gibbs II end after this season. I'm not willing to accept that he's responsible for everything that folks up here are spreading on him, but after four years I don't know why the fifth will be any better.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | November 4, 2007 9:57 PM | Report abuse

This is what happens when a team is bad for a long time. The fans become negative and mope about areas that the team is weak. Yes, the WRs arent doing anything, Yes, the D line is average at best, Yes, the pass coverage is suspect, but lets look at the big picture. The skins are 5-3, the 3 teams we have lost to are a combined what 22-3? and we should have won 2 of those games. JC isnt blowing up the passing game but the guy hasnt had a full year under his belt yet. Peyton Manning wasnt setting the world on fire his first couple years in indy either. The difference between this years skins team and teams of the past is that they actually winning games that they should win. I dont care by how much or against who, they are finding ways to win. Last year, if we were in the same position as we were in the fins/cards/jets game we would of found a way to lose. That has been the skins m o for about the last 15 years. Im not saying they are gonna win the super bowl or even make the playoffs, but it does feel good to watch a team that isnt an abysmal mess.

That's good old fashion hating. I hate the Cowboys, but give credit when credit is due. He's a good QB, and he makes plays. Hopefully Williams comes up with a scheme to stop him. And with a season of games under his belt, Campbell needs to start becoming more accurate. I'm getting tired of hearing that he's a young QB with only so many starts.

fish,

I haven't been able to catch up to all of the posts today.

Yeah, what confuses me the most is that Gibbs seems so darn stubborn about it. Dude, you've lost 12 games since you came back after leading at the half. You've probably made 12 more (including today) closer than they had to be by being conservative carl. we can't be the only people to see this. I mean, the players see it and often comment on it. the coaches have to see this and try and get in his ear, right? why won't he change? he just coaches way too darn scared for me. it's so atrocious it's down right disturbing how one man can be so conservative and stubborn.

I also don't get what the F is going on with Al Saunders, because he doesn't call 6 straight run plays there in a running formation... it's comical, and almost awkward (even for me), to see that cluster fart going on...

Posted by: johnw | November 4, 2007 10:01 PM | Report abuse

Ok. So now we'll finally get a break from the fools calling for Betts to get the bulk of the carries. Clinton is the man in D.C. I wonder how long the break will last. Two weeks? Can I hope for 3?

Bigfish - you are dead on about Romo. Will take the league another year to figure out Romo cant see downfield when he's in the pocket. Tell your defensive ends to just contain him, rather than try to crash the pocket and he will fold like a lawn chair.

Posted by: LiberalMike | November 4, 2007 10:02 PM | Report abuse

That's not good old fashion hating. Ask the others that have been up here for months. I have been saying it since the beginning of the season and have proven to be right every time. If the Redskins' coaches see the same thing then it shouldn't be too hard to gameplan against him. Also, keep in mind that he is playing the same Egles team that we beat as well.

"but after four years I don't know why the fifth will be any better."

talent_evaluator, I just don't get that perspective. Gibbs had us a dropped Carlos Rogers pick-6 from theNFC Championship the year before last. How many coaches win a Super Bowl in their first 4 years? Not many. Look, one of the guys people like for the job if Gibbs leaves is Bill Cowher, and the steelers waited around 17 years for that overrated fool to get it done. The skins need 2 things, a GM (not going to happen any time soon, Gibbs or not, and to be patient.

Posted by: LiberalMike | November 4, 2007 10:07 PM | Report abuse

can anyone else call out 1/2 to 3/4 of the Redskins play calls? My buddy and I were literally calling them out before they happened. if we can do that, don't you think the defense can? Yeeeeeeesssss, I know it worked (almost wasn't enough) against a horrible Jets team today, but it's just not going to work against Philly the second go around, Dallas, Tampa, etc.

I feel like Gibbs can't get over that series late in that dallas playoff game back in the 80's where the hogs were telling the cowboy lineman where they were running. dude, it ain't the hogs up there. it also isn't the 80's. you need to out smart and sometimes trick your opponents. keep them off kilter. we might be the most predictable and conservative team in the history of the NFL.

I'm actually pretty encouraged by the win today. The Jets are not good, but they are not in the category of Miami or St. Louis either. They should be under .500, but not 1-8. I knew as soon as they ran that kick back it was going to be an ugly "scratch-and-claw" game because the Jets, desperate for a win and on their home field, thought they had a chance. Was a big deal to overcome that and get the W.

Eventually, Campbell will realize that when Santana has a step he can just lead him to the middle of the field and he doesn't have to throw it as hard as he can. When they get synched up, look out!

Liberal,

I still can't get over the mass overhaul after that Seahawks playoff game... I think that's why I'm so frustrated sometimes, even at 5-3. How can we stay patient when the team, itself, can't stay patient.

We had all the momentum in the world after that season, and instead of tweaking a good thing, Gibbs overhauled everything, including a team that won 6 straight before losing to Seattle, an offense that put up 30+ points the last 3 games, and a lot of personnel, including 2-3 of the worst free agent pick-ups in the history of the NFL.

see what I'm saying?

Ricky Bobby -

Yep, in hindsight, it was not the best move. I think Randel El has worked out well, but Arch was obviously a bad one and so was Lloyd. As for changing the offensive scheme, I think a lot of people who criticize that now, felt (even after the playoff run) that the offense needed to be modernized and overhauled. Saunders' system is still a running system, so it looks like more of the same, but another couple big games from Portis and well start seeing JC light them up when they bring 8 into the box.

This year, I think, they showed a lot of patience. They have been struck by a rash of injuries on the o-line and, regardless of how much criticism they deserve for not having much depth, NO team would have had the depth to withstand that many injuries in one spot.

All I'm saying is, don't be in a hurry for Gibbs to leave. He gave us 5 years, and he deserves our faith for 5 years.

One sign things are changing: the full draft is intact next year.

Another sign will be when they resign LaVar next year. Just watch.

ga8085,

Skins outplayed the Eagles by a wide margin in that game. It wasn't as close as the score. Dawkins didn't go down until the 2nd half and, with the way our secondary played. It would not have mattered if the whole team was healthy, they could not handle us.

Next week. Different stadium; same result.

Damn loseable type...

Shephard and Dawkins don't play offense and I doubt they would have made too much of a difference if they had played. We beat them in their house (where we haven't had too much luck lately) so we should be okay in our house.

It's a good week when we can talk about the next game this soon.

LaVar? really? I can't see how the Danny/Gibbs would let that happen, especially after the 6 mill in bonus money issue, all of the ill will, all of his words in New York. I mean, I wouldn't mind seeing a healthy LaVar resurrect his career in DC... as a back-up LB (to start) and for the vet minimum with no signing bonus!!!!... but I just can't see it happening.

Posted by: johnw | November 4, 2007 10:26 PM | Report abuse

I have to agree that the overhaul after 2005 was bad to say the least. I wasn't impressed with the Lloyd and Arch signings cause they always had put up average numbers with their prior teams. And yes the 2005 offense had it's problems, but they could also be very explosive with only one receiver catching the ball. And think about it, this would of then been Campbell's THIRD year in a season instead of learning a whole new one last year. Would that of made a difference? Who knows.

LaVar's done. He'll never play football again. And the guys they have now are better than he would be.

They don't have a 4th (Duckett) or a 5th (Kendall) next year. And, they're looking at some serious cap problems -- Springs, Portis, Lloyd.

Sorry, but I just can't see Gibbs as the answer. I don't think Cowher's the answer. I just don't think Gibbs gets the best out of his players, and I can't buy his penchant for veterans near retirement.

The boo birds are out in full force in Philly tonight.

Why is McNabb wearing an oven mitt? It's not helping!!

I think the Skins found their identity a little in the second half today as far as running the football. THe Eggles are undersized in their front-7 and they will have to be worried about that. Jason should get more room to go downfield than he's seen in weeks.

As for the LaVar thing, its just a feeling I have. I agree our starters are better than LaVar could be now, but I think he could be a younger version of the role Randall Godfrey plays. I think the ill will was with Dale Lindsay, who was an A$$.

Ricky Bobby

I can and do. I called the run play at the end of the 4th quarter and my buddy was like "Nah, they're going for the endzone." Does he watch the same Joe Gibbs as I'm watching?

He also asked if I wish I was "BMGOing" my guts out while I was watching it at his place. (he caught me BMGO during a game a few weeks back).

No way Lavar is coming back to the Skins. Your feeling must be nausea, cause it sounds sick. He didn't play disciplined in Williams system, which is a must. Also, I'd be looking for another trainer in the offseason, Bubba ain't cuttin it.

If Philly looks anything like they do now next week then it should be a cakewalk.

NFC East vs. AFC South

21-11 (after tonight's game assuming there's no tie) vs. 22-11

Toughest division in the NFL? It's a close one.

From today's game:

"I have been in this league too long to use the word embarrassed," coach Norv Turner said.

Just like big yellow taxi cab, you don't know what you miss until it's gone.

Translation: "I have had my ass kicked more times than that dunce wearing the kick me sign."

I had no problem with the 3rd down call. Would have loved to see Clinton break that last tackle and put the fork in them.

However, I do want someone to scream at Joe: "BALANCE!" Throw the damn ball. 23 times, wtf?

5-3 is fantastic but I want to see the passing game become consistent and the defense to close out teams on 3rd down. 11-18 on 3rd downs on a guy who is making his 2nd start is pathetic. Game looks like last year's game against Minn when we lost in overtime. You can blame the play calling but if the defense stop the Jets on just 3 of those 11 third downs. Clinton prolly get 200 and Betts 100 yards.

hey all -- just zippin' thru... Kendall's a 4th in 2009, so we've got that critical 5th rounder next year.

The offense put a bunch of decent drives together... it's certainly not good to settle for FG after FG, but those 9-10-11 play drives have been missing from the repertoire. Mr. Campbell has to play better, particularly in the red zone.

Defense has been living on the edge all season... even in the Miami game, if the Fins WRs had not been dropping passes, the result would have been different. Rogers was missed. Key defensive play was the one where Clemmons scrambled and got hit late by LFB. Chris Wilson was coming around the edge and got held -- badly and publicly -- right in front of the ref. That was about 40 yards difference -- on their only TD drive of the game.

My point exactly on the D. Too many third down conversions. What's the point of having speed on the outside with Moss and ARE when they're not even attempting to get them the ball. I doubt Portis runs for that kind of yds against a half decent run D. Gibbs is really starting to get under my skin and we won!

daggar,

True about the dropped passes. That didn't stop until the second half of the Giant game. The D plays alot better when Rogers, Springs, and Smoot are all healthy. Unfortunately, that's not going to happen this year.

ga8085,

I hear ya. I think as far as the game plan, the offense did their job. Now, I don't particularly care for the plan but that's beside the point. The defense has to play better against better teams.

For all the critique Double Move took, the one thing he excelled at was zone on 3rd down. Let the WR catch the ball underneath and then pound him two or three yards short of the first down.

Don't know what to think about the offense in the end. Either Campbell isn't very good, or our receivers are terrible. If the running game is there, we're just efficient enough to stay in the game; but Campbell didn't make the Jets pay for having to bring in the eighth man in the box, and he's generally not made other teams pay when he's had the chance.
Anybody who'd take him over Romo, right now, straight up, isn't paying attention. It pains me to say that, but there it is.

Give the Cowgurlz credit... they score points. Their lowest scoring output before today was 25 in that lucky win over Buffalo, and they have 35 right now.

The Skins need to figure out how to put REAL points on the board if they want to take the next step. Every win is nice, but field goals won't cut it against the better teams.

It's been a while since Campbell's had a good game. He's just getting by.

This week is our chance to step on Eagles throats.

Were haven't been very good at these kind of games.

Posted by: bangkokben | November 4, 2007 11:30 PM | Report abuse

Campbells last good game was against the Pack. If the receivers could have caught the ball...

Posted by: bangkokben | November 4, 2007 11:33 PM | Report abuse

I don't think anyone in their right mind would take Campbell over Romo. Not saying Campbell won't be a good starting QB, but come on this guys not a rookie and I'm tired of hearing it's only his 14th career start. You look at other young QB's (like Cutler and Leinart) and they seem more accurate and are capable of throwing for over 250 a game. Of course I think the coaches are handcuffing him, but you have to be able to make throws when your receiver is wide open. He's missed Moss too many times this season. Let him loose and if he looks like crap get the handcuffs back out. But give him a chance for cryin out loud.

Posted by: ga8085 | November 4, 2007 11:34 PM | Report abuse

Wow, they're really sticking it to the Eagles with T.O. Do you think Gibbs would be calling pass plays in this situation? He rather swallow his dentures me thinks.

Posted by: ga8085 | November 4, 2007 11:36 PM | Report abuse

Campbell has played better than Cutler and Lienart. He's had some accuracy problems but has also shown the ability to hit his receivers. (See Detroit) I do agree that he needs more throws to become more accurate. Take the gloves off! Set up the run with the pass! Will this happen? No. Not unless plan A (run the snot out of the ball) utterly fails.

Posted by: bangkokben | November 4, 2007 11:42 PM | Report abuse

I think Campbell maybe over-coached... he's missing some pretty easy (NFL starting QB easy) throws and its clear he does not look comfortable throwing to his receivers be it the receivers themselves or the area of the field they are in.

Can we also say that Sellers "peaked" during the Lions game? He has been really disappointing as a rusher/receiver since then. (10 rushes for 34 yards and 7 catches for 33 yards) and has had several key drops to stall drives. I love him as a run blocker but the love doesn't go much beyond that.

Posted by: Dorf | November 4, 2007 11:45 PM | Report abuse

I would love to agree that the coaching is part of the problem, but there were a dozen plays today where they called play action, Soupy did the half rollout deep drop looking for someone deep, then checked down to his short option. So either Moss and Randle El (oh and Thrash too, but that's no surprise) are completely unable to get open, or Soupy is nervous, tentative, and inaccurate.
And his checkdown throws are not particularly friendly... Cooley missed at least two today that weren't so much drops as poor throws.
All in all, the flashes of a commanding presence that he showed last year, and we all thought was the stuff to build a great career on, hasn't been there enough.

Posted by: daggar | November 4, 2007 11:46 PM | Report abuse

Apparently the WR's can only get open when the D has eight men in the box. That's what Gibbs seems to think. And what's with this cover 2 shell crap? They act like it's impossible to throw on it. Give me a break, the middle of the field should be vulnerable or the soft spots between the CB and Safeties. But Gibbs thinks I'm probably talking witchcraft if he were to overhear me.

Thanks, I went by the name redskins8085. I've been on here on and off this season. Some good insight on here, and I'm glad to see other fans feel my suffering during the games Gibbs seems to be coaching his guts out every week.
