The Rooney Rule
Spoke to more people inside Redskins Park. The staff, all of whom remain under contract right now, was informed this morning that the organization must go through a hiring process to comply with NFL rules. They are all essentially in limbo right now. The staff was told nothing about any possibile organizational structure changes, - ie who would replace Gibbs, need for a GM, etc.
Received some emails about the exact nature of the Rooney Rule in terms of minority hiring in the NFL. I contacted the league for the official statement, as there was some confusion if you had interview a minority candidate it a team was going to hire from within. And, yes they do; there is one exception to the rule that does not apply in this case.
Here's the NFL briefing on the rule from 12/20/02:
"On the December 19-20 conference calls, the owners strongly agreed on the principle that any club seeking to hire a head coach will interview one or more minority applicants for the position. The one exception occurs when a club has made a prior contractual commitment to promote a member of its own staff and no additional interviewing takes place (e.g. Mike Martz and the St. Louis Rams in 2000)."

Is Mickey Rooney available to coach 'em up?

So there will be at least a week before we know who the new HC will be.

I think the rule should apply to Redskins Insider too.

So in the case that the non-existent clause in Double-G's contract is actually existent, they don't have to follow the Rooney rule? If it isn't existent then they do?
Posted by: sw30 | January 8, 2008 3:00 PM | Report abuse
So it is possible at the 3pm PC for the 'Skins to announce GW as HC then.

Coach said he thought they would go all the way. Said the game against the birds was a shock.

Agreed -- nice touch. Something's wrong with my connection. It looks to me like he's standing behind them.

At players meeting really didn't know. Said sorry to the players. He went home and wanted to speak with family first. On the way back strong feeling in heart of what he should do.

I'd take Marty as HC. Don't see it happening, but Snyder could do a lot worse, and has in the past.

Sure 'nough TE. He's behind them.

Ya think Danny was beggin' Joe to stay during that 2am meeting?
Posted by: NCICURN | January 8, 2008 3:10 PM | Report abuse
Said him and Dan talked until 2am. He felt that with his family situation he couldn't make the commitment to the Skins the way the team needed him. I respect that and understand.
Posted by: jm220 | January 8, 2008 3:11 PM | Report abuse
I washed Danny's slate clean because of his outstanding conduct and leadership when Sean Taylor died. I think Snyder will make some good decisions this off season.
I think Williams will be the man.
Trailblazer, gotta roll with it up here, hang in there.
The single thread record is over a 1,000 comments, so we won't have a chance with so much news happening. Wait till after the draft. Just sayin.
Speaking of draft, depending upon who the Skins pick up, it will certainly bump at one or more players off the roster.

He was probably begging him to put off the decision. "Sleep on it a few more days."

People are hard on Synder. If Joe believes he is such a good guy, as he appears to, he has to be a good guy. Gibbs would never lie to the fans about that.

Said he and Dan reached an agreement at 2:30am this morning on what to do.
Sounds like they need thinker walls at Redskins Park.

This rule is so unbelievably demeaning to the very people it is intended to help.
Posted by: Barno1 | January 8, 2008 6:08 PM | Report abuse
I think Williams' contract would allow the team to get around this rule if they chose to name him the successor. Wouldn't you agree Jasno?
