Redskins Prepare for T.O. Show

It's Dallas Week, in case anyone is paying attention to football around here, and that means a whole lotta T.O. What he has to say is open to interpretation, but what he's done on the field isn't.

Owens had a massive day the last time these teams met at Texas Stadium: eight catches for 173 yards, and four were for TDs (of 4, 31, 46 and 52 yards). So naturally, corralling him this Sunday will be a primary responsibility. The strange thing about last year's in The Big D was that the Skins had the dude bottled up in the first half.

Shawn Springs was matched up in man coverage on Owens for most of that half, and though Owens beat him to the corner of the end zone for a four-yard TD, Owens didn't hurt the Skins otherwise in that half (four other receptions for 40 total yards. Washington had yet to give up the big play - QB Tony Romo's longest pass in the first two quarters was for 23 yards.

But the Skins went to much more of a zone look in the second half, the corners played deeper off the line, and they were burned repeatedly for it. Three of Owen's four catches in the second half were for long TDs, with linebacker London Fletcher, and safeties Pierson Prioleau and Reed Doughty among those who got caught making coverage mistakes. Sean Taylor was hurt for that game, with the season about to take a sickeningly horrible turn, and the secondary was in disarray in the second half, with communication between the safeties and corners problematic to say the least.

So what does this mean for Sunday's game?

Well, Springs was pretty upfront about the challenge. In the locker room after the win over Arizona, during which Springs blanketed Anquan Boldin, Springs was talking about his buddy T.O., and how he expected to be matched up again in press man coverage against "Terrell 'Usain Bolt' Owens," to use Spring's words.

"Me, personally, I've got a track meet with T.O. next week," Springs said, eager to meet the challenge.

There's no Terry Glenn to complement Owens on the outside anymore. And the Cowboys have some injuries at WR, With Sam Hurd and Miles Austin dealing with ailments. Patrick Crayton has had a modest first three games - eight catches for 105 yards - but that lack of a bigtime complement at receiver is offset by the production of Jason Witten, maybe the best tight end in the game right now, and the running game looks better than it has in a while. (We'll break that aspect of play down later in the day).

So I figure that Springs matches on Owens, and if they want to switch it up with Carlos Rogers for some plays, that works too. T.O. likes to line up in the slot, especially against Cover-2 situations where he can work the seam, and Springs would be the best match-up there as well. They can shade LaRon Landry to Owens's side to give some help over the top - and the whole league knows that Dallas coordinator Jason Garrett will take deep shots from all over the field - and we'll probably see a fair amount of "Cobra," too, with safeties Chris Horton and Doughty joining Landry on the field.

The biggest question will be who gets the daunting task of sticking with Witten. The more I think about it the more I think we'll see Marcus Washington on him in the slot a fair amount, and Rocky McIntosh as well. When they run him downfield against a two-deep zone, Fletcher will have to cover a ton of ground down the middle to get back.

After having such success finding the holes in that zone a year ago, you know they'll try to duplicate it. It should be a great chess match, especially considering all of the problems Dallas presents on the ground (second lame plug for later ramblings).

Hopefully the whole defensive side of the ball has a great game. We'll need it if the Cowgirl offense is clicking on all cylinders. The 'Girls secondary is their weak point and if Campbell has a good game, he may get a shot at redemption from last years' 4th quarter pick he threw while driving for the winning score.

Remember when we had a football team here in DC? They called them the "Redskins" or something.

Now we've got the "Snyders", a marketing machine aimed at selling beer and replica jerseys to morons.

The Skins are going to get embarrassed on Sunday.

T.O. owns the 'Skins of late, and there's no reason to think Sunday will be any different. The far bigger problem in this game will be Witten. Pressure on Romo, stop Witten, and contain Barber. T.O. will get his catches, but don't give him RAC. Do that and win.....

His name is Jason Witten not Jason Whitten. Come on Jasno! You get paid to know things like that. Spend less time snitching more time editing your blog posts.

Best thing to do is ignore JLC. Let him write his posts and then we respond to each other. Like all media, he's got an agenda and is terribly biased.

Anyhoo, a question I found interesting that I adapted to our team. Would you have wanted the Redskins in the Super Bowl back in '83 if you knew they were going to get pasted 38-9? Is it enough to say your team was one of two standing at the end, even if they took a whuppin'? Interesting concept...

The Cowboys secondary has been a weak link in the past. But they have added solid talent this year in the draft and the Adam Jones trade. I think we will have more trouble from them than in the past, though our receivers are better too.

Their OL is arguably the NFL's best (though weakened by a replacement guard this week). Their DL is good not great. Our only chance is to tag 28 on them, and pick Tony Farve at least twice.

I see the Skins in the 10-6 maybe 11-5 category. Dallas seems to be in the 12-4 category.

Much like we got embarrassed down there last year? As I recall Dallas was a "Super Team" last year as well with much of the same team. Even after TOs 4 TD catches we still had a chance to win the game. Came about 3 inches too high to Moss before the int of winning that game. That was not to embarrassing when you play the greatest team in the world and hold your own like that. I am not 100% sure the Skins will win, but I do know we will not get embarrassed!!

Maybe that what you should have been doing instead of making a call to the NFL about a radio show. We played Dallas tough both games last year, they are basically the same team, JLC get off there jock you were all over AZ jock as well, and we sent them B!tches packing.

There secondary is bad, they can be passed on, it will be hard to run on them but you have to try.

Put Springs on TO all day no matter where he lines up, then pressure Jessica, if you have to blitz do it but mix it up and disguise it.

You need long drives like we had against AZ, there offense was on the sideline most of the game, but you need to score TD not FG.

Do not give up big plays, Dallas is a team that thrives on the bog play they are not a patient offense if you make them take all underneath passes Jessica will eventually start forcing the ball down field then you have shots at INT's.

Oh one last thing nock the snot bubbles out of Barber everytime he touches the ball.

Well it OUGHT to be spelled W-H-I-T-T-E-N. So there.

Good analysis, Jasno. Just like Dallas' game last week against Green Bay, I think T.O. will be more decoy than performer. Springs will do a nice job on him. He'll get 2-4 catches, but Barber/Jones and Witten will gain big chunks. Miles might even get more catches than T.O.

"After reading Tony Romo's 2½-game career stat-line against the Redskins, it's hard to imagine how the Cowboys are just 1-2 in games Romo has started against Washington. The Cowboys quarterback has completed 63.1 percent of his passes for 663 yards and six touchdowns, adding up to a 101.3 quarterback rating in the three contests. In last season's thriller in Texas Stadium, Romo threw for 293 yards and four touchdowns - Terrell Owens the recipient of all four scoring passes. With Romo jumping out to a hot start already this season, don't be surprised if the Pro Bowler carves up another Redskins secondary this Sunday"

The one thing Jim Zorn has going for him is a lack of history concerning this rilvary, thus he is free to game plan without second guessing himself which i think held Gibbs2 back and made him hesitant to pull the trigger offensively speaking.I think Zorn will turn Campbell loose on the Cowboy's secondary, you've got to put them on their heels. Attack!! give them something to think about, stretch the field Cooley,Moss, and ARE will be paramount Devin will have to step up also defense must play smart and blitz them when they least expect it.GO SKINS PLAY HARD FOR SEAN#21.

Well guys, looks like this might be the Skins last ever visit to the dreaded Texas Stadium. Good riddance to that place. My worst memory of that sink-hole was Larry Cole bursting through the line and nailing Riggins for a loss in 79. It was the key play in the most crushing defeat the Cowboys have ever handed us. That game and the 74 Thanksgiving game are the ones that irritate me the most. Of course we have had our share of dramatic victories, and clobbered them in the two big playoff games. This rivalry is always strong, passionate and at times personal.

I wonder what the new Cowboys stadium will be like for the Skins?

Yeah Alex, if people don't slurp Jason like you, they must be blinded by the Skins PR machine. Some of us like to think independently, and as an independent thinker I've determined Jason is a weasel. He called hoping it would be tampering, hoping the Skins would get in trouble with the league so that he would look smart in his criticism of the radio show. If he stuck to analysis of what happens on the field, then I wouldn't have a complaint. I think Vinny is also lame and childish, but that doesn't excuse Jason's immaturity. If his editors love his opinionated, slanted, vendetta style reporting so much, they should make him a columnist, but as a beat reporter his behavior is unacceptable to many readers. I have no problem with criticizing the Skins, but this is about personal hatred of individuals, not analysis of an organization.

These people hating on Jason are probably all McBush fans anyways!!! Just bitter losers!!! Jason does not have to be a Redskins Fan to be a Redskins Reporter. However, to hate Dan Snyder you can be a Redskins fan. I am the biggest Redskins Fan and can't wait for the day someone else owns the team.

He doesn't have to be a fan. However, there smacks a lack of intgerity when you have intimate access to a team personal working and you seemingly betray that trust to meet a personal agenda.

Lets see he had 43 yards in game one last year, and -6 in game two, with the same O-Line. So I think we can handle him.

He only gained 80 yards on Cleveland, and 63 yards on Philly. The Packers have never been known as a team that can stop the run so his totals against the are skewed.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 24, 2008 9:42 AM | Report abuse

You need long drives like we had against AZ, there offense was on the sideline most of the game, but you need to score TD not FG.

Do not give up big plays, Dallas is a team that thrives on the bog play they are not a patient offense if you make them take all underneath passes Jessica will eventually start forcing the ball down field then you have shots at INT's.

Posted by: Flounder | September 24, 2008 8:52 AM

I posted this yesterday, but I'll re-post in response to this.

The last thing the skins can do on defense is aim to prevent the big play. Obviously you don't want to give up any big plays, but the moment we switch that to our main goal, Romo/Barber/Witten will eat us alive. The one thing you cannot do is allow Romo to get into a rhythm, or allow Barber to get it going on the ground. The skins need all-out aggressive pressure in Romo's face, as well as attacking Barber at or before the LOS. If they give up a big play as a consequence, so be it. Put the onus on the secondary to come up big rather than worrying about protecting from the big play.

On the flipside, Zorn cannot worry about attempting long, time-consuming drives. That's a recipe for disaster in missing out on putting points on the board (this is precisely what doomed GB this past weekend). All Zorn needs to worry about is getting TDs. Send Moss deep, early and often. Send Devin Thomas deep, early and often. Let Dallas know that we're here to attack, not control the clock. The clock control will come once we get their defense back on their heels.

In my opinion, this game should not be a chess match were we just try and contain and hope to capitalize in the end. It should be an all-out blitz where we hit them with everything we've got. Give them our best shot, and see how they react. Attack them on offense the way Philly did, only come right back and attack them on defense as well (which Philly did not do).

Dallas is far from this god-like team the "experts" make them out to be. It's going to show this weekend.

It should be an interesting game. Campbell has had a chance to mature and learn to read defenses better. I think it will stay close for 2 or 2 1/2 quarters but the Cowboys pull away in the latter stages of the game. They have too much on offense for Washington. The offense wore Green Bay down in the second half and by the end of the game their defense was very tired. As for Dallas' defense, GB and Rodgers got a large percentage of the yardage they gained in the last half of 4th quarter when the game was out of reach.

For the idiots who run their mouths on this forum (calling the Dallas QB "Jessica" and Witten "Halfwitten") we will see how you talk when your team loses. Will you have the courage to admit you were beaten by a better team or will you be like all the Green Bay cowards that boasted how the Pack was going to humiliate Dallas then were mute after Sunday night's contest.

That's why I am an idependant. And I am an Independant on this blog. I just love the redskins. JLaC has done things for me, and I love for that. But, when your wrong your wrong. And no one should be silenced or pegged as a hater.

"For the Redskins, it’s about patience — finally. After years of looking for the quick fix, impulsive owner Daniel Snyder finally seems to be grasping the concept of building for the long term. For the most part, he stayed out of the free-agent market, saving his big splash for the dancing defensive end, Jason Taylor. But Snyder made that trade only after injuries decimated his defensive line in training camp.

The Redskins aren’t as far along as the other three in the division, but there seems to be a plan under rookie coach Jim Zorn. The Zorn-Reid-Tom Coughlin-Wade Phillips quartet is six Super Bowl titles shy of Gibbs, Parcells, Ryan and Johnson, but they’ve definitely got something going."

GIANTS SUSPEND PLAXICO
Posted by Mike Florio on September 24, 2008, 9:01 a.m. EDT

The New York Giants, who have followed their Super Bowl championship with a strong start to the 2008 regular season, have suspended receiver Plaxico Burress, according to Jay Glazer of FOX.

Wow.

Per Glazer, Burress failed to show up for work on Monday, and he failed to respond by calls from the team aimed at obtaining an explanation for his unexcused absense.

It’s a two-week suspension, but since the Giants are off on Sunday he’ll only miss one game, against the Seahawks.

Burress was a key component of last year’s Super Bowl run, and he played most of the season with a torn ligament in his ankle before catching the game-winning touchdown pass in Super Bowl XLII. He received a new contract in the hours before the regular-season opener against the Redskins.

He is scheduled to meet with team officials on Wednesday morning to explain himself.

Stay tuned.

I'm just glad we took care of business against the Cards and Saints. I feel like that allows the team to be much looser going into this game. If they lose that sucks because its the Cowboys, but road losses are going to happen in the best conference in the NFL. If we were staring 0-4 in the face with a loss, I would have to think that would cause added pressure and stress. This way, the Skins can just go out swinging and take their best shot. The season doesn't hinge on this game.

Less than an hour ago, yours truly told the Sports Junkies on WJFK radio in D.C. that Matt Millen will continue to run the Detroit Lions for as long as William Clay Ford Sr. owns the team.

And, to no surprise, Millen has been fired. Jay Glazer of FOX reports that Millen is out.

Per Glazer, the decision came on Tuesday night. It’s unclear whether Millen resigned or was fired. The timing of the move, coming a day after Bill Ford Jr. said that he’d fire Millen if he could makes us think that Millen might have decided to move on.

Millen, who previously was a game analyst for FOX, became the president and G.M. of the team in 2001. The team generated a woeful record of 31-84 during seven-plus seasons.

I know the Skins have a very talented D, and Cowboys fans know better than to pencil in a win before the game's over, but I think you folks habitually overrate your team, something you can't honestly accuse Cowboys fans of doing. We're humble and studious and gracious in defeat.

Posted by: Flounder | September 24, 2008 10:17 AM

It's the opposite. If you don't prepare for a shootout, you get beat badly. Hence the only close game that was played against the Cowboys so far was when Philly dropped 30 by halftime. Unfortunately for Philly, they forgot to bring their defense to the game as well. Worrying about controlling the clock only gets you long drives with 3 points (like Green Bay's masterful performance). You cannot play scared.

And the West Coast offense has nothing to do with aggressiveness. Some take long drives (like Tampa), others go for the big shot (like Philly). There is no predicated gameplan just because you run the West Coast.

What are you smoking, Clit? If you have read comments on this blog, you'd see that the Skins fans are some of the most skeptical, critical in all of sports. Overrate the Skins? Sheesh, a great majority on this blog were calling for benching our quarterback after one game, against the Super Bowl champs, when we lost by only 9 points. I'd say the average prediction for this year's W-L by rabid FANS was 8-8. And living in the DC area all of my life, I've met many, many Dallas fans. Therefore, I can honestly say that Cowgirl fans consistently use hyperbole to describe their team/players and inflate their success/ignore their weaknesses, no matter what kind of season they're having. And humble, studious, gracious? It's clear you udderly (sic) don't know what those words mean.

Something I found for you guys:

REDSKINS & COWBOYS RIVALRY HISTORY

The Roots Of Evil. It's Dallas Week. With the Redskins' return to competitive play (thank you, Joe Gibbs), Dallas Week again means something, although it's far from the two-city enthusiasm of the seventies and eighties. It's a common misconception that the Cowboys-Redskins rivalry started with George Allen. While Allen stoked those fires, there was a heated relationship between the teams from the inception of the Dallas Cowboys. And why not, since Redskins founder and owner George Preston Marshall tried to strangle the Texas baby in the cradle.

This Land is My Land. Washington sports fans are well acquainted with Peter Angelos effort to deny a major league baseball franchise to the Washington area. Angelos had an aggravating notion that the Washington TV market belonged to Baltimore and a team located so close his would damage the value of his team, The Baltimore Orioles. Angelos did not originate this twisted logic. Four decades before, Marshall held the same view for the Redskins.

The Dallas Redskins? Marshall asserted that the Redskins market was the South. All of it, from the Atlantic to the Pacific. If it was below the Mason-Dixon line, it was Redskins territory. He built a radio network to broadcast Redskins games and had quite a large following in the Southeast U.S. His business strategy led practices now viewed as unsavory. To avoid offending his southern listeners, Marshall refused to add Negro players to his teams, even though every other NFL franchise was doing so. Marshall would have the Redskins band play a chorus of Dixie between verses of Hail To The Redskins. The cheers were louder for Dixie than for the Redskins fight song.

By the 1950s, the Redskins were struggling on the field and financially. In a weak moment, Marshall considered selling the team. One prospective buyer was Texas oil man Clint Murchison who was seeking to bring a NFL franchise to Dallas. They nearly concluded a deal that would have moved the Washington franchise to Texas until Marshall insisted on a change in the terms. Murchison suggested what Marshall could do with his change of terms and the deal fell apart.

My Kingdom for a Song. Murchison's next move was to work with Pete Rozell on an expansion team when Marshall created the marketplace argument that would later be used by Peter Angelos. Expansions could only be approved by unanimous vote of the owners. Marshall would have none if it. Then he made a critical mistake, two actually. First he had a falling out with Barnee Breeskin, The Shoreham Hotel orchestra leader who was also leader of the Redskins band from 1937 to 1951. It was Breeskin who wrote the music for Hail To The Redskins. Two, Marshall failed to acquire the ownership rights to Hail, which he discovered to his horror when Breeskin, in a snit, sold those rights to Clint Murchison. Now, a big part of the Redskins mystique is the fight song. Kids learn that song about the same time they learn the words to Jingle Bells. You can't be a true Washingtonian unless you know the first four lines of Hail To The Redskins! It's the song as much as anything that has fans clinging to the team name Redskins. With his beloved tune held ransom, Marshall relented on the Dallas franchise. But, boy was he pissed.

Quarterback Controversy. It was bad enough that Murchison outmaneuvered Marshall to land his team. To rub salt in the wound, Dallas selected Redskins pro-bowl ('55, '57, '58) quarterback Eddie LeBaron off the Redskins roster. Never mind that Marshall failed to add LeBaron to his protected list. Marshall considered Murchison and his Texans underhanded. Historically, that made Marshall the first Washingtonian to say "Cowboys suck!" He took it personally and made sure his team took it personally.

A Rivalry Is Born. In a rivalry full of irony, Marshall insisted that the Cowboys play in the Eastern Division with the Redskins. The Minnesota Vikings were the second expansion team and Marshall did not want to play a late season game in the cold North.

The Dallas Cowboys played their first game in the 1960 season. The Redskins 1960 victory over the Cowboys was their only win that year. The Cowboys were winless. The Skins won two of the first four and tied two others. The rivalry grew as Dallas fans pulled off a series of pranks in the early years. In December 1961, they conspired to release two crates of chickens onto the field during halftime of the Redskins-Cowboys game. The plot was discovered before the chickens were released. The night before the third Redskins-Cowboys game, the nefarious plotters managed to sneak a turkey into Marshall's hotel bathroom, giving Marshall quite a start. At the game, two acrobats in chicken suits ran onto the field at halftime after giant "Chicken" banners were unfurled in 50 yard line stands.

After the first four games, when the Skins went 2-0-2, the tide slowly turned in the Cowboys favor as superior coaching and better talent asserted themselves. In nineteen times in the sixties, the Redskins' record against the Cowboys in that decade was 7-10-2. Rivalries are more than games and records. You must have memorable moments. Those Cowboys-Redskins games were real donnybrooks. In the mid-60s, the Cowboys and Redskins dueled in a remarkable four game series that forever set the tone of the rivalry. More on that in Part II, Jurgensen and Meredith, Aces Wild.

Posted by: psps23 | September 24, 2008 9:42 AM

Philly results notwithstanding, agree to disagree. What you describe was the first quarter offense in Week One against the Giants. The way to control an explosive offense is to keep them off the field. In order to GET long to Moss or Thomas, Dallas needs to be worn down, cheating up the short game. In Zorn I trust ... rhythm, tempo, lots of plays, show them lots of different fronts ... then mess with them.

The Redskins suffered in the game last year in Dallas because after Sean Taylor went out of the contest, we no longer had the athleticism downfield to keep TO and Witten in check.

It's really difficult to scheme for the loss of a defender DURING a game. Where injuries happen beforehand the Coordinator can change the scheme somewhat and accent certain packages.

When it's in game and the loss in the backfield, the only way to overcome that short stroke is to get a significant pass rush taht prevents the QB from even being able to look downfield.

In 2007, the Redskins DL was challenged to get to the QB. Other than Andre Carter, there was no pass rush presence on the team.

I didn't say "don't control the clock". I said you cannot worry about controlling the clock. You cannot design your gameplan around controlling the clock. You have to come out aggressive and attack. If you read my original post, I said send Moss and Thomas deep, early and often. Get the 'Boys on their heels. Once this happens, the clock control will come. It cannot be forced. Otherwise, you're going to see this team get bogged down towards the end of drives, just like GB did.

Not that anybody gives a damn, but I haven't quite made my mind up yet about this latest silly Jasno-Vinny flap.

I don't think a reporter's calling the league for a rules clarification per se is wrong at all, but it's plausible that Jasno was somehow advancing his anti-Vinny agenda by making that call, and the bottom line is we'll never know his intent in making that call.

But if what Vinny had said on his radio show HAD constituted tampering, then he would already have been "guilty" and would have deserved whatever punishment had come, no matter who had reported it to the league.

But Vinny KNOWS the doggone tampering rules, so of course he wasn't guilty of tampering, so he shouldn't give a damn whether Jasno called the league... instead he (Vinny) made this into a snitching story, knowing it would break bad for Jasno, knowing this ridiculous "Jason must go!" firestorm would erupt anew.

Marion Berry is so ten years ago. D.C. is and has been governed by a new breed. D.C. has been holding, if not increasing, home values when the rest of the country is slumping. Suggesting that a federal tax payer shouldn't trusted with federal representation because of how it votes is hypocritical, esp. based on the performance of the outgoing presidential administration.

Nate,

Here's where I'm coming out on Jasno and Vinny: These two bring out the worst in each other. They both take the low road, and each of them is a discredit to his institution. That the Post's and the Redskins' owners and managers tolerate -- and encourage -- their opprobrius behavior is a sign of the squalor of two once-great institutions.

You know where I'm gonna go
Straight down the tunnel to the field

Lying on his back with T.O. in his face

The problem I have with JLC is he isn't any good and doesn't know what he is talking about. The only thing he thrives on is trying to tear down the Skins. This calling the league stupidity was just the latest example. The league didn't call Cerrato because this is a perfectly normal thing that reporters do. They called him because they thought it was odd.

Posted by: Get him out... | September 24, 2008 11:10 AM | Report abuse

You can call it he said/he said, but it's a pattern of behavior on both sides that has existed for years and continues to escalate. But Jason never starts it and he's always the poor victim, even though the Post has already admitted that he called the NFL, presented the specifics of Vinny's show, and asked if this was tampering. That can be considered fact. If you really think he wasn't hoping that the answer would be "yes, you're right, it is tampering," then I have a nice piece of land in the Everglades I'd like to sell you.

Nate, I totally disagree with you. JLC KNEW it was not tampering, he was just trying to get Vinny in trouble - which means get the Skins in trouble. I'm sure the NFL will start looking at the Skins more closely for improprieties and this was JLC's intention - and maybe to get the radio show pulled from the air. For some reason, Vinny having a show disturbs JLC greatly - maybe it has to do with his mancrush Jerry Coleman getting fired by the Skins.

I'm not a Vinny fan but he had absolutely EVERY right to be beyond angry about this. What JLC did was stupid and oh so wrong. It's beyond defense.

I thought Jason's weakest recent performance was the stuff he put up about the final cut-down when the 'Skins kept all their draft picks. His chief argument (only source who would be quoted) was Derrick Frost's criticism of the draft, right after Frost had been cut. Then the next day Frost backed down from what he'd said.

Brooks may not work out, but cutting Frost was one of the better moves. He's about to lose his job at Green Bay:

Tender, no need to defend JLC. If he was a man he'd defend himself. Hell, at the very least he might start to build some small amount of respect back if he'd just do the right thing and speak to his mistake.

In any case, I think there are some folk who are looking past this game already and it will be a mistake. People are sleeping on this match-up. Listening to some of the 'experts' you'd think this was a virtual bye-week for Dallas. Looking at the numbers, these teams are a lot more evenly matched than they seem at first glance. Whatever happens, this is going to be a good game on Sunday.

I think you can read Emilio Ruiz Garcia's defense of Jasno the other night to see that the Post tolerates and encourages it. You can read the Wall Street Journal interview with Snyder to see that he endorses it. And, if it weren't tolerated and encouraged, it never would have sunk to these depths.

Lisa, I don't know how you can know that Jason knew what Vinny said on the radio wasn't tampering. I think what was in Jason's mind is a "known unknown" at this point.

The bigger point that everyone seems to be cheerfully eliding is that Vinny Cerrato KNOWS the league's tampering rules and, Dorf-like, abides by them. He does so because he knows doing otherwise will adversely affect the team.

So Vinny should not have to worry about someone "snitching" on him. In fact, he should WELCOME any additional scrutiny from the league as an opportunity to demonstrate what an exemplary franchise he runs.

But instead of just laughing this off and going about his business, Vinny makes this into a huge flap, because he knows it makes the beat reporter look bad, he knows it will set off this firestorm of criticism.

Kudos to JLC for writing about football. These are the types of articles fans want to read...

That said -- the Skins are concerned that JLC could contact opposing teams and discuss the Skins game plan; given his continued access to Redskins Park. A loss would provide sufficient cover to write more negative stories about the organization.

Nate, this defense of JLC is laughable. Vinny knows what the tampering rules are because he read them on the air - and he has worked in the NFL for a long, long time. If JLC did not know (and I believe he did) all he had to do was look it up online. No need to call the NFL about it.

As I mentioned, I am no Vinny lover, but I can absolutely understand his anger about this. For years, JLC has been criticizing the Skins ad nauseum and just recently went on a tirade about Vinny's new show. For this to happen immediately after the show began is no coincidence.

I'm all for everybody having an opinion, but if you're going to form an opinion please don't be so biased as to only listen the liberal media spin. Try and filter things and listen to both sides of the story before bashing someone that you know nothing about...

We should be voting with nothing but the best intentions for the people of this country, not based on political positioning, or because Bush is a Republican and he's messed up big time... I am a Republican and am not happy with the BS thats gone on the last several years, but I do fell that McCain is the best candidate and won't stand for the on-going non-sense in Washington and his record proves it and so does Palin's...

Apparently all of you Palin and McCain haters aren't listening very welll to her interviews or what McCain actually has to say... You're letting CNN, NBC, ABC and CBS force feed you that spun up, scripted, heavily biased liberal wish-wash...

You say... "and guess what she still sounded like an idiot." PLEASE!!!

JM220-How did you know she sounded like an idiot when you just said that she wasn't even doing interviews... THAT IS CLASSIC! Where have all of these Biden interviews been? The sword cuts both ways...

All of you left wing Liberals that would like to flush our democracy right down the drain for a a bigger/fatter/lazier/more corrupt government better keep praying that Obama doesn't continue to repeatedly put his foot in his mouth with ignorant comments about Palestine/Israel or whatever the flavor of the day is... At this rate he doesn't stand a chance.

You preach about Palin... Wahhh, she's not qualified. She's 10x more qualified then you're joke of a community organizer candidate who can't make up his mind how to vote on most items since he's been a Senator... He did the same thing in Illinois and your beloved Hillary even crushed him for it... He just keeps on voting present. THAT IS A JOKE. What has he done since becoming a senator! WHAT? Other than try to posture himself for this election.. NADA! He is a smart man, no doubt about that, but thus far has been a joke of a leader without any sort of principles that should comprise a presidential candidate.

Anyone want to talk about how our o-line is going to try and handle the likes of the Dallas d-line?

Posted by: N. Olkewicz | September 24, 2008 12:13 PM | Report abuse

Someone give me a good argument as to how this is justifiable:

Jason has constantly complained about the Redskins Front Office and their lack of accountability and visibility. He has called for either Vinny or Dan to "face the music" and answer questions regarding their decisions.

In training camp, Jason bashes Vinny for "lying" to all of the media when Vinny denied a deal had been completed to acquire Jason Taylor from Miami. He demanded Vinny be more honest and open regarding this issue, even when doing so could have ACTUALLY been tampering since nothing had been finalized at that point and Taylor was still technically a member of the Dolphins. Not to mention the deal could have fallen apart, and any GM in the league will tell you it is a no-no to discuss trades with the media that have not been finalized because they can always fall through. We all know what would have happened had Vinny announced the deal before it was done, then it had fallen through because of that, or he had been charged with tampering because he discussed acquiring Taylor while he was still technically a Dolphin. Jason would have ripped him up and down for compromising the team just for the sake of announcing a trade a few hours early, and this criticism would have been justified.

After the news of Vinny's new radio show comes out, Jason rips the team again, saying that a GM should have better things to do then spending 4 hours a week making himself more accessible to the fans and media. Even if Jason actually knew the duties of a typical GM, isn't this increased accountability and accessibility what he had been calling for for quite some time now? Jason rips the show, rips Vinny, and rips Snyder anyway. he goes on at great length of how a show of this nature is "unprecedented" even though some basic research shows there are at least 5 other GMs in the league with similar shows, including the Colts GM, Bill Polian. He quotes another anonymous source that rips the idea of the show, apparently a source as misinformed as Jason, since the source also speaks incorrectly as to the unprecedented nature of the show. This is most likely the same source he calls every time he wants a negative quote about the Redskins, if there is actually a source at all.

Immediately upon the debut of the show, Jason calls the league in an attempt to get the league to look at what Vinny said and determine if that was tampering. Aside fromt he fact it is not his job to CREATE the story, he should have known, and I'm sure he did know, that this was not tampering based on the fact that the tampering rule is quite clear and easily found with a simple Google search. It is obvious that he was hoping to create enough trouble for Vinny and the team so as to cast a bad light on the show, and fulfill his own opinion of the show as a bad idea. If it were really the innocuous type of call Jason and the Post claims it was, the NFL surely would not have made it a point to call the team and let them know one of their local beat reporters had called up and tried to claim there was tampering. Sure, Jason defenders can throw out the "only other teams can charge the Redskins with tampering" argument, but anything more than a prima facie look at this reveals that while a reporter can't file an official charge, simply an accusation is a "charge" in theliteral meaning of the word. Vinny never said Jason officially charged the team with tampering, and to be honest, we all know he wouldn't need to to create a problem for the Skins had tampering actually occurred.

I would appreciate any intelligent responses that refrain from childish name calling and the mother/wife invocations.

Alex, comparing my religious and political beliefs to that of the KKK is a bit harsh isn't it? I have no problem with blacks, unless they are practicing homosexuality. Just as I would have a problem with whites practicing homosexuality.

Are you without sin? If not, you are in no position to judge because all sins are equal. Didn't Jesus teach to hate the sin but love the sinner? Bible beaters like you should try examining yourself before judging others and practing Christian love.

Dallas Cowboys: Better quarterback, better OL, better DL, better running backs, better front seven, 3-4 defense, better special team, secondary a wash, but does not matter since: see above.

I can accept to a limited degree your statement about McCain even though he is selling his soul to win the election. But sometimes you gotta break some hearts to get ahead or a prettier, richer wife. But please enlighten me about those aspects of Palin's record that support the above assertion?

Actually, I completely agree with you. Everyone of us are sinners, and I have never stated that I hated the sinners, I hate the sins. However, even though we must recognize ourselves as sinners, we also have to recognize and repent of those sins. Pretending that they are not sinful is not what God has in mind for us.

Ha, he said Cambell could read!

Gary Clark,

It seems like the JLC apologists have nothing to say because you provided well-written, factually based opinions. So they can't insult you and call you a moron, because a moron doesn't write that well.

Circumstantial evidence can be used to prove guilt to some degree, and I think you have described succinctly the bigger pattern that this latest incident is a part of. I don't defend Vinny at all, but there are plenty of things to criticize him for without going out of your way to create stories.

Maybe the Post should just put Jason on the Vinny beat like ESPN had Pedro Gomez following Bonds around daily during the BALCO scandal. That seems to be his main concern as beat reporter for the Skins as it is.

If Jason LaCanfora was calling the NFL to find out whether Cerrato's comments were tampering, he was doing his job. I am a news reporter in another state. This is what reporters do as part of our mandate to be watchdogs of those we're covering. If you have a question.... you ask. It doesn't mean Jason's accusing Cerrato of anything. It means he's asking. If the answer is no, it's not tampering, then LaCanfora moves on to whatever else he's working on. People here are hysterically accusing LaCanfora of all sorts of things. Because he asked a question? He was doing his job. Shut up.
