They Took A Punter - Durant Brooks

You guys take it from there.

Kid on the phone with us now. Ray Guy, the all-time great punter, is a family friend. Durant, like Tyron, has no lack of confidence.

He called himself - "the best in the crop," of punters, and, didn't think it unusual to be taken with the second pick in the sixth round. "I think the Redskins made an awesome choice," he said. Wow. Fair to say Frosty has some competition now.

Great. We have all these holes on O-line and D-line, and we take a punter just so Frost can have some competition? I think we could have done better than that.

Posted by: aliza | April 27, 2008 3:20 PM | Report abuse

We have another pick coming up. Why not the best punter? Esp. since ours is awful.

Posted by: BT | April 27, 2008 3:20 PM | Report abuse

Not bad, he's supposedly a really good punter won the ray guy award in 07. It is the 6th round I'm not too upset, If we took him in the 4th then yes I would be upset.

Posted by: Ez | April 27, 2008 3:20 PM | Report abuse

Look, maybe we needed a punter. And maybe it's not a sexy pick. But couldn't we have gotten him a little bit later???? What about the Dline????

Posted by: Nobcentral | April 27, 2008 3:20 PM | Report abuse

Hate on the pick all you want, but this guy sounds like a huge improvement. From his NFL.com profile:

Brooks put on a sensational show during Senior Bowl practices that NFL coaches are still raving about. Brooks stepped into his first punt of the day during Tuesday's session and sent it sailing. As the ball continued to fly past the other sideline and then over the head of Tampa Bay head coach Jon Gruden, Gruden simply looked up at the ball and asked, "Is that serious?"

The fact is, punts like those are not only serious for Brooks, but they have become routine. "Durant is a great talent," 49ers head coach Mike Nolan said. "I don't think teams are going to be able to sit around and hope he falls to them."

After Tuesday's practice featured the length of Brooks' punts, Wednesday focused more on directional and pooch punting drills. With the NFL scouts already aware of his leg strength, Brooks proved he could consistently down the ball inside the 10-yard line. "Everyone knows that Durant can kick the ball a good ways, but what's underrated is how incredible his hang time is," one scout said. "When you're trying to punt the ball inside the 20 it's all about hang time, and Durant does it better than anybody."

Posted by: Anonymous | April 27, 2008 3:21 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Funkdeath | April 27, 2008 3:21 PM | Report abuse

Scouts Inc. had the punter as a5th round pick. Not bad value in the 6th then. Frosty needed to go. You don't get QUALITY specialists as undrafted FA. Immediate impact in the 6th round. Good pick.

Posted by: Mike H. | April 27, 2008 3:21 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: CapsFanInHollywood | April 27, 2008 3:21 PM | Report abuse

They must be going for value. He's one of the top-rated punters -- picked to go in the 5th round.

Of course, now I'm the one who's reachin'. For excuses.

A kicker -- wow. The mind boggles.

Posted by: Claude | April 27, 2008 3:22 PM | Report abuse

He was projected a 5th rounder... Just look back at how many bad kicks Frosty had in the 4th Qtr!!!! Very Kelly Goodburn'esque if anyone recalls the Kelster. Padded stats in first 3 qtrs only to give the ball away at mid field. 6th rd, not bad.

Posted by: CLEGG | April 27, 2008 3:22 PM | Report abuse

From ESPN:
Brooks may not be the most versatile kicker in this year's draft and he could still become a little more consistent but no other punter possesses his blend of touch and power so he could get drafted as early as the fifth round.

Posted by: Club 320 | April 27, 2008 3:22 PM | Report abuse

This time, the Ray Guy Award voters got it right, as Brooks was the recipient of the 2007 award after finishing as a finalist in 2006. It was appropriate that he was named to the award, as many in the industry feel that he is the finest punter to play at the collegiate level since Ray Guy himself. Ironically, Guy has been a family friend and Brooks' mentor.

Along with kicker Travis Bell, Brooks gave the Yellow Jackets the best kicking tandem in the ountry. Boasting a 40.66-yard net average, the Tech punter ranked fourth in the nation with a 45.52-yard gross punting average in 2006, As a senior, he finished fifth nationally with a 45.06-yard average and a 40.58-yard net average.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 27, 2008 3:23 PM | Report abuse

How much everyone want to bet he does not make it to the fourth pre-season game?

You can develop Linebackers, corners, safetys, lineman during the season. They are on scout teams and special teams.

Punters and kickers either win the job or are gone.

The kid may have the talent, but you can't develop depth with this kind of pick

Posted by: RedBee | April 27, 2008 3:23 PM | Report abuse

Good pick. We needed a good young punter. A very underrated position, and a starter. We got a starter in the 6th round. What is everyone so upset about?

Posted by: WWC | April 27, 2008 3:23 PM | Report abuse

can we get a long snapper next?

Posted by: Anonymous | April 27, 2008 3:23 PM | Report abuse

Actually, given the paucity of first downs, this pick makes a lot of sense. Our only hope to success is to play the field position game and hope that we can get a few field goals and stop them on D. So, good job Vinny C. You've correctly identified that we suck and that we'd better have a great punter to cover up some of our weaknesses. You deserve a cold one.

Posted by: Nobcentral | April 27, 2008 3:24 PM | Report abuse

All I know is this rookie better be Ray Guy like....

Posted by: Dumb Move | April 27, 2008 3:24 PM | Report abuse

Draft went downhill after they selected Devin Thomas. Could've picked up some good line men (offense & defense), a LB or 2, or a S. Pretty shocked they passed on Mike Jenkins. Would've let Springs move to FS and Landry back to SS.

Lenny & Squiggy (Vinny & Danny) muck up another draft. Where's Gibbs?

Posted by: ChucklesHB | April 27, 2008 3:24 PM | Report abuse

Every other complaint I've seen lodged by Skins fans as to this draft so far as least has some legitimacy. Any complaints about taking Brooks has ZERO legitimacy. This is a need pick, a solid pick, and a GOOD pick.

Posted by: Jay V | April 27, 2008 3:24 PM | Report abuse

Yo losers, stop blogging like you know what you're talking about. The skins have had a hell of a draft. They are getting guys who can make an impact immediately. This punter is very very good. Better to draft him then to let him go as a FA.

Please stop blogging like you know what the skins are going to pick. We know what their needs are and I can assure you they do as well.

So you bloggers can beat it....go outside and do something.

Posted by: youguysallsuck | April 27, 2008 3:24 PM | Report abuse

Brooks was originally projected to be drafted in the 4th round, so he is a good value pick. No need to worry about those ugly Frost shanks anymore. Meet your new Pro Bowl punter.

Posted by: jcook | April 27, 2008 3:24 PM | Report abuse

Atleast he is a nasty punter.

Saw him against Maryland last year...he is nasty.

But that being said...we have filled very few of the needs of the team...

Maybe this is why we don't usually draft.

Posted by: Matt | April 27, 2008 3:25 PM | Report abuse

Richardson isn't a powerful drive blocker who dominates the point of attack despite his excellent size and his lack of aggressiveness cannot be overlooked. However, he has the frame, athletic ability and range to develop into a serviceable starter or valuable backup

That OT from Clemson is not much

Posted by: Greg | April 27, 2008 3:25 PM | Report abuse

the only thing i see dumb and funny is this blog....you guys complin about EVERY SINGLE MOVE the Skins make....and you guys act like cause they took a punter, which we need cause our kicking game has been s h it for years, that this pick has destroyed the team for years...give me a break.....I'm not sure whats worse....the whining complaining bi tching in this blog or the cocky people in here who think they are great GMs but the reality is they are at home on this blog even though there are 32 teams in the NFL who they should be working for as a scout or something...but your not...whats that say? @Redbee...I'll take that bet, bro. Brooks will be our punter for the next 10 years.

Posted by: Jay V | April 27, 2008 3:25 PM | Report abuse

I'm don't think the complaints are as much the fact they took a punter as the fact that one of themost glaring needs for the PAST 2 YEARS hasnt been addressed at all yet.

Posted by: robrown22 | April 27, 2008 3:25 PM | Report abuse

Good sign: Frost just was inked by Brandon Lloyd's record label

Posted by: corkczar & Guy | April 27, 2008 3:25 PM | Report abuse

The pattern keeps going - we're drafting guys who can help ASAP. Brooks will be our punter. Kelly, Thomas, Davis will be catching passes. Rinehart will see time as a backup. Tryon will play the nickel.

Clearly the FO wants to add guys who can play right now, rather than guys who may take some time to develop.

Posted by: SaltyDog75 | April 27, 2008 3:25 PM | Report abuse

Redskin fans are officially idiots.

The best punter this yr and for quite some time. He had 5th round potential and we have a sh**y kicking game. We used a 6th rnd pick not a 4th or 5th...

Posted by: Inigo Montoya | April 27, 2008 3:25 PM | Report abuse

You sure can tell these guys haven't been used to actually drafting people. Other than WR and maybe OL have we flled a need?

Posted by: RedskinRay1 | April 27, 2008 3:26 PM | Report abuse

For everyone whining about Frost, this is likely a big upgrade. He was projected in rounds 4 or 5 and, make no mistake, HE WOULD HAVE BEEN DRAFTED. Probably New England and everyone would have said GOOD SHOW!

Superb draft even though there are probably some guys I might have picked instead. Thomas, Kelly & Brooks start right away. Best draft in many many years for the Skins.

Stop the whining. All I hear from you goons is D-Lineman, D-lineman. There aren't any left who will make the team. There hasn't been since the 4th round. This is the best punter to become available for several years. I've seen this guy live, he's that good.

Posted by: Dlj | April 27, 2008 3:27 PM | Report abuse

Last night, Zorn commented on how yesterday's picks (2 WRs and 1 TE) would be good on special teams. Now a kicker or punter (whatever he or she is). All the other teams are loading up on D, and we're going special teams. Next pick, holder for kicker. Me so Zorny.

Frost has come a long way from his rookie year when he was consistenly punting 20 yarders. I think he could hve been solid this year....and I like the way he wants to tackle someone. They're giving Suisham a chance...why not give Frost a chance this year to come into his own?

Durant Brooks Draft Profile
DURANT BROOKS
Punter
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
#39
6:010-202-4.92
Macon, GA.
Tattnall Square High School

OVERVIEW:

The highest-rated punter entering 2007 did not disappoint, winning the prestigious Ray Guy award as the nation's best. Guy actually knows the Brooks family, and has worked with Durant over the years. Durant's gross average of 45.1 yards per punt was fifth best in the Football Bowl Subdivision, but his 33 inside the 20 (more than half of his 65 attempts) and 21 fair catches were considerably more than the other punters ranked ahead of him.

ANALYSIS:

Positives: Able to turn the ball over more often than any other punter in the draft. ... Adept at directional punting to his left or right. ... Can deaden the ball inside the 10-yard line with fair consistency. ... Holds for field goals and extra points, able to rein in poor snaps to get the ball down. ... Never had a punt blocked at Tech. Negatives: Could achieve more consistent hang-time. ... Can be a two-step punter, but adds an extra half step at times, lengthening his delivery. ... Not tall or owning a great build, he will not threaten to bring down a return man in the open field.

Posted by: firstpunter | April 27, 2008 3:30 PM | Report abuse

We still need depth at DE and LB. There are two guys out there that could help and make the team. I say take Dixon. He's a much better talent but obviously teams have been scared off by the racist trial and punishment he was subject to in Georgia (as an ex-GA resident, trust me, when black guys have sex with white girls, it's a problem). You can read about him on ESPN. He's a good talent and he would be a great character guy. He's already been inside and is doing everything he can to succeed in life. Dixon. The only choice.

Posted by: Nobcentral | April 27, 2008 3:30 PM | Report abuse

Guys, that's why they traded down, they obviously wanted the Punter and knew taking him in the 5th round was a reach. So they traded down, still got the guy they wanted, and now they can get another guy too.

Don't forget about Undrafted FA's and June 1 cuts. They are also great for depth.

I dunno about you guys but Danny Bo and Vinny have actually made me feel dirty during this draft. Nevermind the fact that we have huge holes on the O and D line lets draft three people we kinda sorta need but lets put the cherry on top with a place kicker that more then likely we could have picked up in Free Agency.

Zorn in case you there is the slimest chance in Hell you are actually reading this. Please stop letting them make decisions. Unless ARE or Moss have instantly gained 200 pounds and can now be a linemen for the love of god draft on the line.

HOLY CRAP!!! GO WACTH THIS GUYS>>>>>If we get pinned inside our own 20 ....we are IN BUSINESS WITH THSI GUY....people can hate it all they want...but this punter is an impact...NOW! And we needed it...GO WATCH!

Posted by: Leevi98 | April 27, 2008 3:32 PM | Report abuse

If anybody thinks these guys know what they are doing, then I say good luck to you and the team in 2008.9 picks to start and look at what they've done. NOTHING!!!!! No wonder they avoided the draft in prior years. Vinnie the Ninnie is about to wreck his second NFL team. I recall when they wasted a number one on a place kicker in the '60's. How long was he with the team? Please, I don't want to hear about Ray Guy, the Raiders had so much talent then, they could afford to waste a pick on a kicker.

Overview

This time, the Ray Guy Award voters got it right, as Brooks was the recipient of the 2007 award after finishing as a finalist in 2006. It was appropriate that he was named to the award, as many in the industry feel that he is the finest punter to play at the collegiate level since Ray Guy himself. Ironically, Guy has been a family friend and Brooks' mentor.

I know we needed a punter... and yes this is a good pick... it's just SOOOO unglamorous that I think we're all in shock. I think in two years, when this class is examined as a whole, we'll all be happy.

Posted by: JustinBaker | April 27, 2008 3:33 PM | Report abuse

4 picks left, better be o-line depth and a lot of defense!!!!

Posted by: redryan400 | April 27, 2008 3:33 PM | Report abuse

Does anyone remember that our defense was pretty damn good last year and we would have won several more games if the anemic offense could have produced just a little more? There will be some depth added after June 1st @ D-line,CB and LB. We'll draft a Safety, Barret from ASU or the kid from App State soon.

Posted by: Dlj | April 27, 2008 3:34 PM | Report abuse

you could take a position player with a 5-10% chance of starting for you, or a specialist with a 90% chance of starting for you.

i'm not sure it was the right move, but it's not as ridiculous as everyone seems to be saying

Posted by: pbm8c | April 27, 2008 3:35 PM | Report abuse

Yes, we need a punter. Yes, he was the best punter in the draft.

We still need a S, LB, and line help. Hopefully, they find 3 or 4 Montgomery/Golston/Heyer's for the line help.

Geno Hayes is gone...

Posted by: ChucklesHB | April 27, 2008 3:36 PM | Report abuse

i like this pick. that youtube clip is sick. the difference between going for D-line is this guy can probably win the job and a 6th round d-lineman is probably going to get cut. unless you can get a guy better than the young linemen we have then it's a waste. we could have gone d-line early and it would have been ok, but at this point the punter is probably a much surer thing.

i would like to see a few more guard/center types who are also more likely to succeed as late round prospects than d-line.

Posted by: punter | April 27, 2008 3:36 PM | Report abuse

This punter can not only put it inside the 20, he also has volunteered to protect the residents living near Nationals Park on off-game nights.

Posted by: DOrr | April 27, 2008 3:36 PM | Report abuse

Just curious, how many people on this blog, have previous experience with an NFL Team in the scouting dept, or have worked for an independent scouting service??

Posted by: Greg | April 27, 2008 3:37 PM | Report abuse

This guy punted 80 yards from the end zone in a game. When is the last time frost bailed us out of a tight spot like that.....Wait for it.........NEVER. Face it Frost sucks and we got the best punter in the draft, I like it. Those who dont reconize the inportance of a good punter dont understand the game.

Posted by: DWC | April 27, 2008 3:37 PM | Report abuse

It's embarassing to read some of these comments. Seriously, people, put your thinking caps on.

What this team really needs on the DL is an impact edge rusher, and you're not going to find one in the low rounds.

Still plenty of time to pick some backups at DL, OL, LB, and S. Tons of guys to pick from.

Heyer

Skins D Line:

Montgomery

Daniels
Golston

While I agree we need to get some depth, they don't need a starter at any of these positions. They needed some WRs for the four WR sets (only have Moss and ARE). They needed a TE to complement Cooley in the two TE sets. They need a punter to replace "Can I have a Frosty with that shank."

Let's not overreact too much...

It's ridiculous how outraged everyone is. This guy is a freakishly good punter. Do you not remember how bad Frost was last year and how frequently he cost us field position. This is a 6th round pick!! Most of these guys won't pan out. This guy could solve so many problems.

Posted by: WTF??? | April 27, 2008 3:39 PM | Report abuse

watch the you-tube clip. 76 yards out of the end zone. thanks for that post. Idiot who said: are we expecting lots of 3 and outs? 3 and out, 12 and out, pinned in the end-zone. If you can get 45 yards everytime you need it, you have a chance to win. It's about percentages and field position. All the wrist-slashers need to quit their arm-chair jobs as GMs.

I saw that thing on you tube. Hes a monster punter. If there is such a thing! Its hard to imagine that he was on the draft as the best player at that time. This is the craziest draft ever!!

Okay, we have 2 of the next 8 picks or so and all the guys we were looking at appear to still be there; in retrospect I like the pick because after researching this guy I think he'd have been gone, and we'll still probably get the other guys we would have taken with our next 2 picks

Barrett is dropping because he doesn't project to be as good of an NFL player as his combine measurables would suggest.

That said, I think he's worth a flyer this low. You can't teach speed, and this guy has it. Pick him, let him learn the D, tons of upside.

Robertson's still available at DE, same with Dixon, plenty of LB talent, Barrett at S, and OL depth. Let's see what happens.

He called himself - "the best in the crop," of punters, and, didn't think it unusual to be taken with the second pick in the sixth round. "I think the Redskins made an awesome choice," he said. Wow. Fair to say Frosty has some competition now.

I don't have a problem with the round in which he was picked, just the priority. The next pick needs to be a D lineman. Overall I am hopeful about the direction of this draft. Vinny is addressing areas of need, (yes - we needed big receivers) and this year he's actually using the draft instead of free agency. We have a lot of picks left - I'm pretty sure we'll get a defensive lineman before the end of the draft. Hang in there folks. Feel free to keep bashing though - this is some funny sh*@ to read!

I challenge anyone to present a credible defense for the Skins having made these draft selections.

Note: An offense does NOT learn run the ball effectively by "spreading the field" with four wide receivers.

Posted by: podspeak | April 27, 2008 3:58 PM | Report abuse

Colt Brennan.

I am glad they are not improving their line. I want my Giants to keep running on the Skins.

Look, Give Vinney some credit! He realized by the sixth round that this draft class was going to be horrible and we were going to be doing a lot of punting in 2008, so he went out and got the best punter in the draft to give the defence a little help! At least that's what I'm going to keep telling my self as I cut a worthless check for my 2008 season tickets

Posted by: zegama04 | April 27, 2008 8:10 PM | Report abuse

Based on the direction this team moves in the draft, we may need a couple more punters. They will probably wear one out about every week.

Posted by: uknow | April 27, 2008 9:23 PM | Report abuse

I'm a GT alum. All of us down here are wondering if we are ever going to see a guy half as good as Durant Brooks. Relax everyone. You now have one of the top five punters in the league (not an exaggeration).

This year the guy bombed one 77 yards IN THE AIR. Not one GT fan was remotely shocked.

None of us realized how important a punter could be until this kid. He's insane.
