Skins Down by 13 after 3

You've got the think the Skins' D will wilt a little here late, with the GIants holding the ball most of the game and the offense unable to score, again.

Chris Wilson's offsides penalty was pretty huge - he just jumped - and while Jason Campbell's INT was essentially like a well-downed punt, the problem was it came on first down and killed a drive. I don't like Antwaan Randle El on those deep routes; he lacks the size and body to really fight for the ball in the air, and is not nearly as adept as Santana Moss at adjusting to it in flight. Malcolm Kelly's third-down drop was a crushing blow as well (the rookie WRs giveth and they taketh away).

Hard to imagine a comeback here, but give the defense credit for stopping the run and stuffing the Giants even in short-yardage situations, where they shine.

Same ol' story on offense.

The Gints make everyone look bad.

The thing is, the Skins barely scraped by the lowly Seahawks, who get blown out by Dallas 4 days later.

Not good.

It's still doable to go 10-6. Giants, Ravens - losses. Bengals, Eagles, Niners - all winnable.

These WR need to catch the ball when they get their hands on it, but Zorn's playcalling is what has been the problem over the last several games.

And this medium sh!it is not working. The players need to find some emotion to play with somewhere. If they can't get some from ST...

Posted by: dealer1 | November 30, 2008 3:30 PM | Report abuse

Same old sh!t from the Redskins that we've come to expect over the last 16 years. Same scenario where they continue to blow winnable games. And this one was winnable until that INT in the 3rd quarter.

The only silver lining is that DAL still has to play NYG, PHL, and PIT too. Now we have to root for SD and hope that GB can defeat CAR.

Playoffs are a fantasy - we can't take of business at home against a division rival. Both CAR and ATL are in better position to make a playoff run. Even PHL is in the running and could pass the Skins. If this team could score some points and take some pressure from the defense, it would be competitive. But to not have the fire in the belly on a special day at home against a division rival is just more of the same. Remember when the Giants waxed the Skins in NY after the owner died....???

Bottom line: The Giants can afford to lose this game and nothing changes for them. They keep a comfortable division lead and are in position for home field throughout the playoffs.

Conversely, the Redskins need this game just to keep pace with Dallas and stay in the Wildcard race.

Given all that, which team would you think would be playing as if they wanted it more today?

You'd think the Redskins, but you'd be wrong.

Jason's fine, he's our best bet out there, guys are dropping balls, very sloppy play. It points to coaching for me -- too many penalties, poor special teams play.

When CP can't get a yard on fourth down on a day like this, at home, against a division rival... we're gonna lose every time.

Posted by: ghcornwell | November 30, 2008 3:40 PM | Report abuse

now we watch to see if the skins have any pride left.

Looking good Jon. Run blocking is his specialty, right????

Posted by: skins1110 | November 30, 2008 3:40 PM | Report abuse

What bothers me is that we aren't CIN, DET, or NO. We aren't a franchise that has had nothing but a record of mediocrity. It would make it easier if we were 0-12 or something, but we're not. What frustrates me is that this team can win--and they always find ways to lose. This game contains the classic Redskin mistakes that have doomed them.

The talent is here to win. For some f!cking reason they just have never been able to make it work. It's always just one play, one turnover, one missed FG, one interception, one fumble, a stupid penalty, a dropped ball, and so forth. The same old cr!p over and over again.

No matter what new coaches come in, no matter what players come in, no matter what happens, it is the same old bullsh!t. The same old dumb mistakes.

If this were Cincinnati or Detroit it would make sense. Those organizations never have done much of anything. But this team has come so close, only to f!ck up in the end.

I'm at a loss to figure out what is wrong here. I used to blame Snyder, but it's clear that he's not the only reason that this team continually ends up with mediocre records. I'm just not sure what to blame or who to say is at fault.

Generally I'm just frustrated. What is it that always prevents this team from making that next step? Even in the seasons that were ugly in the last 16 years, in those seasons, many of those lost games were winnable.

I may sound negative, but I'm just sick of this team that has the talent and yet still finds a way to lose. At this point, unless they beat BAL, we are probably looking at an 8-8 or 9-7 season. 11-5 is probably impossible unless this team finds away to improve.

Posted by: jiacinto | November 30, 2008 3:41 PM | Report abuse

not just game over; season over...

Posted by: 70Chip | November 30, 2008 3:41 PM | Report abuse

omg why can't they just stretch out for an extra yard. Skins didn't even look ready for that 4th down play. It's like they were just like "whatever" they look like they want to go home. LOSERS.

what a nice way to play to honor Sean.

Any Jansen supporters still out there?

Posted by: SkinsfaninKaneohe | November 30, 2008 3:41 PM | Report abuse

It's time to seriously evaluate if JC deserves a long term contract. I just don't see any serious development with game understanding, stepping up in the pocket, getting rid of the ball, and most of all decision making. I don't know what better options will be out there, but I don't think JC is a superbowl caliber qb.

Posted by: puttinforbird | November 30, 2008 3:41 PM | Report abuse

Campbell doesn't have much to work with. When he throws it to anybody other than Cooley, they drop it. That coupled with an inability to pass protect equals trouble for anybody.

Same problems over and over again - lack of discipline, lack of passion, folding at home against a division rival, inability to score. But at least we won't hear "they fought their guts out" when it's over. Skins have a LONG way to go.

Posted by: i155133 | November 30, 2008 3:43 PM | Report abuse

It's not Campbell's fault. It's the line and the receivers who are the problem. Campbell has done the best that he could with the offensive line and receiving corps that he has. Portis has done the best that he could.

Posted by: jiacinto | November 30, 2008 3:44 PM | Report abuse

lOOK AS MUCH AS IT PAINS YOU GUYS, IT'S NOT ZORN TOTALLY!!!!! CAMPBELL HOLDING ON TO THE BALL TOO LONG..... JANSEN WATCHING THE PLAY INSTEAD OF BLOCKING....DROPPED BALLS....MISSED D ASSIGNMENTS... MISSED FG'S.....PLAYERS RUNNING SHORT OF THE 3RD DOWN ON PASS PLAYS...

First off, let's let Sean stay dead. We can't keep living off his memory forever. 2nd, let's work on finding some good WR's in the off-season. And let's get some good O-lineman in the offseason. And while I'm at it, why not wish for a bazillion dollars?

I think you're overrating the amount of talent this team has. I think their record is about what they are -- they had a good run of over-achieving at the start, but they're tired old men. They don't have an O line and their WRs haven't stepped up.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | November 30, 2008 3:46 PM | Report abuse

THE SCHEME WORKS,....IT'S PROVEN...YOU CAN'T RUN SLANTS AND WR SCREENS TO GUYS THAT ARE 5 FT NOTHING.....THAT'S WHY THEY WENT FOR THE BIGGER GUYS IN THE DRAFT AND THEY CAN'T REMEMBER THE PLAYS..... THIS OFFENSE WORKED US FOR 35 PTS LAST YEAR IN THE PLAYOFFS

Posted by: michael_b_clegg | November 30, 2008 3:46 PM | Report abuse

If they don't score again, they'll be averaging 11 pts in their last 4 games. With the Ravens D coming up next week on the road. Doesn't bode well.

Now - root for GB and NO to win. Giants are a really good team. What can you do? At least I'm pretty sure NYG will take Dallas out too. That's some comfort. If we can't win, then neither can those b@stards. $20 to anyone who can wipe that grin off of Romo. God, I hate that cat.

A few nice suprises against the best team in the league:

Only 2 sacks given up. That was maybe the biggest suprise against their dominant line.

A rookie finally showed up. Devin Thomas with a sweet gadget TD.

New guy Dante Hall with a nice pick. Fletch a beast, despite the pain, with 13 tackles.

D is still top 5 in the league. Just got to be patient, and O will be better next year.

After 25 years of watching this team, I never thought I would feel this sh*ty about a 7-5 record.
The Redskins are a very bad team. Bad. Bad. Bad.
We do not belong in the same league as the Giants, let alone the same division.
We suck.
Maybe if we could get a pass rush, a competition down the field, open some running lanes and play special teams, we might be alright .. too bad we can't do any of those things.
The only bright spot I have seen the past several weeks is DHall, which means we will probably let him walk away at the end of the year and give Springs a new fat contract.

Oh calm down the lot of you. Fact is we over-achieved first half of the season. Ropey OL, one decent WR, new offensive system, rookie coach, banged up ends, kicker's leg weakening by the week. Let's see what we can eke out for the rest of the season. And perhaps Rip van Davis will wake up in 09. At least Chelsea lost today.

It's time to start thinking about someone other than Campbell at QB. Of course, that won't happen and for the next week we'll hear about how he didn't have enough time to throw the ball, receivers weren't open, that Zorn is still "teaching" him the nuances of the West Coast offense, blah blah blah. Bottom line: Campbell just isn't that good. Never will be. Too bad we'll spend the rest of this season and probably next year before realizing this ....

This team, at least offensively (special teams too) has gotten worse since the start of the year. Or at least, has been treading water.

That's disappointing. And worrisome (granted, injuries have hurt).

On the other hand, let's be honest here: the Giants are a real good team. I think if they lose Burress for the post-season, someone may beat them. But they'll have to play perfect.

If Burress can play, I can't see anyone beating the Giants.

They have really got to start showing up at home. Or more bluntly, stop laying eggs at home. They don't see to perform well AT ALL at Fed Ex. 3-4 at home this year. They have NO home field advantage.

If GB and SD win then the season is still viable. And DAL still has games against NYG, PIT, and PHL. I don't see DAL winning all three of those games.

But GB and CAR are tied late in the 4th quarter. A GB and SD win is what we need.

JC does not have the reflexes or peripheral vision to play QB in the NFL! Also, he does not read the defense well enough to know who is the hot receiver on blitzes.

The OL needs to pass protect better because he needs more time to make plays.

People ripping JC are nore watching the same game as I am or have not watched all the games this season. He underthrew one ball today( i htink it slipped out because it was wet). Games that are left:

ATL -- SD, NO, TB, MIN, and STL

SD and TB are their toughest games here. But I don't see them winning all of those games. SD has to win today.

CAR -- GB (ahead by 3 at 2:00 warning), TB, DEN, NYG, NO

A GB win is what we need. TB could go either way. DEN could go either way. NYG is a loss probably, unless they have already wrapped up everything. NO is a win.

DAL -- PIT, NYG, BAL, and PHL

DAL won't win all four of those games. They will lose one of them.

PHL - NYG, CLE, WAS, and DAL

PHL is probably out. They will lose to the NYG and DAL.

Well, another lackluster performance from a hopelessly overmatched team. Outplayed and outcoached, the Redskins show themselves to be no better than the Wizards at this point of the season. Looks like a 7-9 team at best, if they're lucky. What a bunch of losers.

And Joe Theismann, you actually think Campbell is close to being a big league quarterback? The rookies in Atlanta and Baltimore can outplay this so called quarterback any day, any time. For a guy gunning for a big payraise, the only thing Campbell deserves is a benching. And maybe, you can release him at the end of the season. How many years to continue to see ineffective play from Jason? So long, buster. You are a bust.

Terrible team, terrible organization, terrible owner. Snyder wants to win, but he keeps putting incompenet yes men at the franchise. What do you expect? At least the Ravens are less than an hour away.

The skins need some DEs who can rush the passer, a RB who can back up CP, a Starting QB, a WR to start alongside Moss, a new head coach, a new owner, a new GM, and they need to bring the team back to DC. Because everyone of the holders at the positions I just mentioned are all impostors.
Now the Cowgirls have overtaken us in the standings, I expect the Eagles to do the same. Frankly we would be so lucky to get to 8-8 this season.
When players like Antonio Pierce and Champ Bailey couldn't wait to leave town, something is wrong with this storied franchise. When the Giants Defensive Coordinator, Steve Spagnolu withdrew his name from head coaching considerations by the Skins, something is wrong with this organization.
THE SKINS WON'T GO ANYWHERE UNTIL EITHER SNYDER SELL THE TEAMS OR GET RID OF VINNY THE CROOK CERRATO.

Let's face it, this offense has been a one trick pony all season. If Portis is going to be playing at 80% then we are not going to score much at all. If Moss is covered we still don't have a second professional receiver on the team. Thomas made a great run on a perfectly timed reverse, but what happened to Kelly today? You just can not drop the ball like that.

Anyone want to defend our version of the West Coast offense? I don't see much happening in the way of sustained drives or yardage gained, not to mention points scored.

I've been a Campbell supporter all the way through but there seems to be something lacking at this point... it's like when Elway didn't have a whole lot to work with, he still seemed to have a great awareness of the field. And that was even in his first couple of years. He was one of the best and so it's hardfor anyone to live up to the comparison, but there is some kind of spark in the truly greats. I just haven't seen that in Campbell. Very good, but not outstanding.

We need drastic upgrades across both lines, maybe a FA or two and let the draft handle the rest. But the 09 draft had better center around boosting the DL, DT and DE and as you said a tackle to replace Jansen. I really think we are set at WR, I.E., this years rookies are gonna step up in 09. We just need to protect the QB in order to get the damn ball to the WR's. Cheers

Funny thing about quarterbacks. They tend to look bad when there are no receivers open, the o'line can't take pressure off them by establishing a run game, and they are under a constant rush.

The Redskins have TWO receivers. That's all. Cooley and Moss. The backs ran for about two yards a carry and the Giants were in campbell's face all day long.

Posted by: funkey | November 30, 2008 4:15 PM | Report abuse

Our offense sucks. Its not because of Zorn's play calling. Its cause Jason Campbell makes stupid throws ie) to Chris Cooley when hes covered by 3 people, underthrown a TD pass to Randle-El which was intercepted. And because our WR's drop the balls wayy too much. Its a one man show by CP, who is injured.

Campbell needs more work. Better defensive line (every qb has eternity to throw), Offensive line needs to be revamped (too much penetration by defenses). Thats the goal this offseason.

Now lets hope a 10-6 team makes playoffs, because we should beat Cincinnati, 49ers, Eagles or Ravens.

If anybody actually watched the games, you would see that Campbell is not the problem.

This offensive line is the problem.

These WRs are the problem.

Jim Zorn is the problem.

Campbell has to play perfect for anything to go right in this offense. He has to drill his WRs in the numbers every time or they won't hang on to the ball (even then it's not a guaranteed catch). He has to be able to avoid free rushers, or shrug off would-be sackers nearly every time in order to get the ball out of his hands. And he magically has to create 50-yard plays out of 3-yard routes. Is he Tom Brady? Of course not. But even Tom Brady wouldn't be able to move the ball in this offense.

Jim Zorn needs to take a serious critical eye to his gameplan and playcalling duties. He's clearly overmatched out there.

Again, maybe I am spoiled, but I seem to remember SKINS team winning with GREAT defense and a decent offense. The Joe Gibbs teams of the 80/90s didn't have good QBs. Doug Williams, Mark Rypien, were decent QBs at best who did decent jobs because they weren't asked to win games but not to lose them for us.
This new owner seems intent on building a team with a great offense and a franchise QB, which we have neither.
Something has to give b/c Campbell will not the Peyton Manning, Romo type who is going to bring your team back if you are losing.
Meanwhile this defense is two great defensive linemen away, who can rush the passer of course with 4 down linesmen instead of 7 or 8 in the box, of being a GREAT defense. But yet, the D line keeps getting neglected in the draft where teams like the Giants, Dallas and the Eagles are stocking up. Consequently, you have Snyder and Vinny who keep trying to fill in the holes along the D line with over-the-hill and injury-prone defensive ends who get paid millions to do nothing.
When you have players and potential coaches turning down this storied franchise, something that would never happen to the Giants, The Cowgirls and the Patriots, something is seriously, seriously wrong with the owner and company.

The same execuses are being made for Jason year in and year out. Maybe, just maybe, he isn't the man. I am just glad that there is a winning team in DC (Caps) that is well managed, well owned and now finally getting support from the city. That's a team that deserves respect.

The Redskins are certainly more popular, but they certainly deserve no adulation for the way they have played when it counts the most. And next week, does anyone really think they can beat a well coached team with a very good ROOKIE quarterback? Flacco can get things done. Campbell, even in his wildest dreams, can't.

Campbell seems dazed and confused.
Game over.

Shhheeetttt!! With G-men crawling up your azz all day you'd be dazed and confused too. Wake up all of you. I'm a Skins homer too but it is what it is. We just don't have the horses to compete! Hopefully the 09 draft will put us in the hunt. For 09 let's go DT, DE, OT and maybe a FA or two, but, if we do bring in some FA's, lets get some who wants to win along with getting paid. No more Prime Times or Bruce's.

I repeat, with the defense crawling up your azz all day you can't get thing done. If you think you can do better, then don a jersey, pads and the rest of the gear and get paid enough to bury your azz.

Renaw9 Good Point. The skins are not a dominate team. Campbell can't make chicken noodle soup with porkchops. This isn't a great team, but a good team. Even when Collins was under center the skins got knocked out of this first round. They are not going to the superbowl just because you put Brennan or Collins in.

Like I said before you don't need a great QB to win games(i.e. Titans) or to win a superbowl (i.e. Giants). E.Manning isn't a great QB. He is a mediocre QB on a great team. Any QB can make plays and look great when you have all the time you need to throw.

No one is making excuses for Campbell, some of us just realize that anemic offense isn't solely due to Campbell.
He made some bad decisions in the Dallas and Giants game, but he even when he made some good ones it didn't result in anything since receivers couldn't make the play.
Would we been even having this discussing if certain receivers would have caught passess in the last two games that probably would have change the outcome?

Look at teams who put up alot of points. Isn't their #1 wideout usually above 6"0?? Would Thrash even be the # 3 guy on most rosters??? How come I seen teams run on the Steelers and Giants??? Put the skins can't??? How come Cooley only has 1 TD this season??? Doesn't that seem odd??? He was JC's favorite target last year. Does anyone wonder about the playcalling?? No hurry up offense??? If you know pass protection is weak, why not try more no huddle??
