Skins Trail by 9 after 3

The Skins defense showed its first real cracks on the opening drive of the half. There were problems in zone coverage - with the tight ends and particularly on Meachem's 19-yard TD catch (where were the safeties?). The Saints went the entire first half without converting on third down, but did so on third and 7 and third and 5 on this drive. That screen pass to Thomas against the blitz on third down was huge, and the entire left side of the defense as caught going upfield.

Still no real vertical component from the Saints, which surprises me.

And the Skins' offense delivered a greatly needed counter-punch to that drive.
This was the same thing as an earlier long drive - simple smashmouth football behind the best side of the line, the left side. The Skins ran 5 times for 44 yards on the drive - all to the left - including Portis's nine-yard TD rumble, in which he followed the expert blocking of FB Mike Sellers right into the end zone.

The two-point conversion attempt was poor, and that pass interference call on what would have been another red zone debacle (third down sack in this instance) saved the drive, but kudos to Zorn for sticking with what's working and jamming the ball in the end zone on the ground.

The Skins finally got an inside push - preventing Brees from stepping up into his throws - for the sack on New Orleans's next drive. Great work by Griffin and Montgomery in the trenches there. Very big play to stem a drive.

And another awful return from Randle El on the final punt of the quarter. That stuff's gotta change. Looked like he just took a header there and dropped down.

And rookie punter Brooks Durant is showing his experience, or lack thereof. Poor punt here and Reggie Bush breaks it. No one ever got a hand on him. He just headed for the left sideline and hit cruise control by the 25-yard line. Yikes. Was having a totally pedestrian day and then, bam, he explodes.

So the Redskins seem like they are giving away another game. More mediocrity. They always find one way or another to lose.

Posted by: NW DC | September 14, 2008 3:32 PM | Report abuse

Complain all you want about Cerrato picking the punter but I don't remember very many people defending Frost when he was here. But I guess any excuse to take a shot at the FO is a good one even if you are being hypocritical.

I am just sick of always losing and dealing with mediocrity. It would be nice to win just once.

Posted by: NW DC | September 14, 2008 3:35 PM | Report abuse

JLC has to be foaming at the mouth over the front office smear piece he's going to write about keeping the wrong punter.

Well said!

Posted by: Cheyenne, WY | September 14, 2008 3:35 PM | Report abuse

Totally agree that the overwhelming majority was very glad to see Frost go.
The real question is why did we waste a draft pick on a kid who can barely kick 40 yards?

Posted by: isnadd | September 14, 2008 3:36 PM | Report abuse

How long do you think it will take for the Redskins to develop their new identity (on both sides of the ball). Seems like they are a team in flux who are not sure which way they want to go.

Posted by: GC | September 14, 2008 3:37 PM | Report abuse

BTW Frost today has 3 punts for a 46.7 avg and a long of 49.

Posted by: Lifelong Fan | September 14, 2008 3:37 PM | Report abuse

And play action passing; w/ a QB that can read a defense (w/ peripheral vison) and throw to the right WR on time. Just say No to the Jason Campbell is Doug Williams nonsense. "Sir, I have have seen the real #17, and you are not him". There is a QB on the roster that took DC to the playoffs in '07 however. God Bless DC.

I'm getting sick of this crap. Owners should be able to get together and vote out any other owner who's become an embarrassment to the league and is ruining a team. Kind of like Survivor. First one's to go would be Snyder and Al Davis.

going for two does not matter. if zorn went for the extra point, there would still be those on this site saying he should have gone for two.

nice hindsight turds!

All I can do is this is a beat-up saint's defense that was suspect to begin with and we can't throw for a couple hundred yards? Campbell has NO vision and average accuracy downfield. Collins needs to take over ASAP if we want a chance to compete this year.

I am sick of losing. So sick of losing, although Landry did stop a touchdown just now.

Posted by: NW DC | September 14, 2008 3:38 PM | Report abuse

Ths issue isn't whether Frost is a good punter. The issue is was he better than Brooks and yes he was and still is. Brooks has cost us now 10 points.

Nice to see Peyton bringing HIS team back...

It is tough to see the mediocre play, but it is the second game under a new system.

This is the problem with lack of continuity.

But as I say "Don't tell me about the labor pains, just show me the baby!"

RR1, I agree that the xtra point was the way to go, just saying that had zorn go for the xtra point some on here would be saying he should have gone for 2.

It's just frustrating to see the team lose every week. It would be nice to actually have something to gloat about at work tommorrow.

Game ball to Horton!!

Posted by: Curzon417 | September 14, 2008 4:14 PM | Report abuse

This has to be the stupidest, least prophetic post of the day, the week, and maybe the season. Typifies a lot of what we've been reading the last week.

.................................................

Many continue to want to argue with me over 2 issues....Once again Campbell killed a drive...He over threw a wide open El...then with pressure up the middle he hold the ball too long by once again pumping the ball......

Second...I have been saying in here for a year and half we need a new kicker...but everyone says Swishy is the man.....

And he misses yet another kick and wastes a failed Campbell drive with no points...

But I'm sure some will still argue.

this is going to really screw with the people who're going to read after the game...

guys, most of the 4th quarter comments are on the previous thread.

3 bad quarters by jc and 3 good plays by him in the fourth quarter. i picked them to win because i said breese will have a bad game and he did and cp will have a good game and he did with two TD's and over 100 yards (i think).

win is a win is a win...

Shut up JLC! Continue to be the naysayer. You whine, whine, whine....blah blah blah. They hung an "L" up on the Saints and Golden Brees. In your eye! Your muckraking on our team is despicable. Next you are going to have an all out attack on the skins name being disparaging. Let me preempt you on that subject---shut up!

Give Vinny and Zorn credit for this one.

Posted by: ben | September 14, 2008 6:03 PM | Report abuse

One thing I do agree with JLC they have to find a new PR. ARE is not a punt returner anymore. They would be better off if he just fair catches every punt.

Posted by: Lifelong Fan | September 14, 2008 8:12 PM | Report abuse

ARE is an awful punt returner. Why can't Rock be the punt returner? ARE never runs straight. He either fumbles, falls down or gets caught early running horizontally on the field. He tries to make something happen but never does. I was quite vocal about it at the game, but everyone ignored me.
