This Time, Daniels Gets Past That First Play

For defensive end Phillip Daniels, the season ended last year when he tore his anterior cruciate ligament on the first play of the first day of training camp, and one year later the veteran end was back on the practice field on the opening day of camp joking that he took no risks of a repeat occurrence.

"Getting out there you just know the first play you got hurt last year and I was joking with Coach that maybe I should miss this first play and go the second play," Daniels said. "And actually I ended up getting like the eighth play, so it worked out perfect for me."

Daniels's injury last season prompted the Redskins to deal for defensive end Jason Taylor, who was released this offseason after one unsuccessful year in Washington, and Daniels was re-signed to fill the vacancy at end opposite Andre Carter.

After sitting out all of last season, Daniels, who is not using a knee brace, said he appreciated even more the opportunity to be back out on the practice field at Redskins Park.

"It felt great getting out here and moving around and going against guys, getting back with your teammates after having a year off and going through what I went through," Daniels said. "The way I worked to get back, it just feels great to get back on the field."

The 14-year veteran is expected to rotate at the position with Renaldo Wynn, who returned to Washington after a two-year hiatus, while first-round draft pick Brian Orakpo likely will shift from strong-side linebacker to defensive end on passing downs.

Neat. Been a while. And it feels as arbitrary and inconsequential as ever.

Good thing he didn't get hurt today or Vinny might've dealt away a 2nd just to get Orakpo signed. I kid.

Ryan O'Hallaren(sp?)on 980 not real high on the Skins. Says Mike Williams was real good at holding today. Made Wynn look like a pro bowler. Says he doesn't see how the Skins will get both Davis and Cooley on the field at the same time.

Daniels owes the team 1 year working with the strength and conditioning team for the 2nd round pick we lost on Taylor.

Ryan O'Hallaren sounds like he does not realize that he's watching the first day of practice

I dont think Barnes is that big of a hitter.

He had that one hit where he made the guy puke, but 6 foot 185 CB isnt really gonna lay the wood, nor should he try. Freddy Smoot can show him how to throw a shoulder into the thigh of a RB....

But I agree, Foxworth, Madeiu Williams now barnes... good UMD DB's coming out in the 2nd or 3rd making a good carrer...

He said that Rabach was a world class holder too. Says its an artform. The team is real high on him, he's the glue for the o-line (that doesn't say much to me.) Says Heyer really needs to assert himself this year. He also said that Samuels told him to look out for Devin Clark. "That kid can play."

Zeebs - Hard hitting dude from the Colts is 5'8" and he won the Def POY a couple of years back. He launches like a missile...

Sanders I think his name is.....

Guess we should cancel the season, then.

Geez -- the media. You can't live with 'em, you're not allowed to remove their fingers and toes and force them run a mile in their undershorts.

I thought we should have kept Taylor and paid him a one year minimum with incentive clauses to get our 8 million that we spent on him last year out of him. Now he will get picked up cheap by another team and make the pro bowl.
