Tied after Three

Credit great defensive reads, or blame bad quarterbacking, but the third quarter was marked by three interceptions and each team capitalizing in different ways. The teams remained deadlocked after scoring once each, 24-24.

Colt Brennan failed to capitalize after a pick by LaRon Landry, throwing a pick-six after guiding the Redskins to the three-yard line. Brennan was the second quarterback into the game for Washington, starting the second half, but was intercepted by Jonathan Wilhite, who returned the ball 99 yards for a touchdown.

It was a frustrating conclusion to the drive for Brennan, the No. 3 quarterback, who was pushed last week after fourth-string QB Chase Daniel played well against Pittsburgh. Brennan was 2-for-6 on that drive.

Landry picked off New England backup Kevin O'Connell after receiver Chris Baker tipped a pass intended for him.

On New England's next offensive series--after a Washington three and out--O'Connell was picked off by cornerback Kevin Barnes, a rookie out of Maryland, who stepped in front of the Patriots' receiver and made the catch before stumbling out of bounds.

As time was winding down in the third quarter, Brennan threw a 33-yard touchdown to Marko Mitchell, the impressive rookie from Nevada, who caught the fade with 10 seconds remaining.

Quarters 1 and 2 are that matters tonite.

Zorn called longer throwing plays and Campbell looks like he'll get in a rhythm once the regular season starts.

I don't care about the running game as it'll be there when needed.

The passing game looks like it might finally start to evolve.

A decent performance all around.

You better hope he's hurt the rest of the preseason, 'cause if he isn't he's making the team.

Then I'm going to be all in y'alls ear like wax, ya dig?

Please Redskins fans, let us look back one year ago to the third preseason game of the 2008 - 2009 season.

Redskins got blown out in a terribly ugly game against the Panthers, 47 - 3.

Certainly we can all agree that this effort was far more inspired than the bummer that was that game.

Oh, and hooray for no pre-season OT. Pats should be able to get 3 here

Posted by: learnedhand1 | August 28, 2009 11:15 PM | Report abuse

OK, DVR recording finally caught up to real time game after FFing commercials.

Some general observations:

Defense, after getting torched early on, made some adjustments and stepped it up at the end of the first half. Seeing Haynesworth putting the pressure on and then putting the hurt on Brady makes me psyched for regular season. I wouldn't want to be Romo, McNabb, or Manning.

Redskins running game non-existent vs. Pats starting D. Was it no blocking or Portis not getting it done, or both?

Also, not too worried about Brady-Moss burning our D. This is one of the best, if not the best offenses in the league and this is a great experience for our D. Brady showed again why he is simply the best. Pats praying he stays healthy cause there's no Matt Cassel backing him up now.

Skins offense finally has some weapons! The youngsters stepped it up. Thomas and Kelly finally look like big threats and you gotta love Marko Mitchell. Also, diggin this Alridge kid!

Red,

I want Mason to make it ova Betts, but Synder won't cut his losses for better people, i don't believe.

I forgot to put a question mark following 'Alridge..?' I jus want y'all opinion on him cuz I mentioned him earlier and this was the first chance we got to see him.

Not sure if Mason is eligible for the practice squad? But Alridge is and that is prolly where I'd prefer him; when Betts gets hurt during the season, we should sign Mason, if available, otherwise keep Alridge for HB speed purposes.

Sorry, didn't mean to go on a Madden-like elaborate explanation, but I'm gonna miss the guy.

Dorsey and Alridge will not make it. Mason has a chance, but he likely won't be active most weeks.

You can't cut Rock, because he is critical on ALL special teams packages (not just KO return). He is the captain of the Special Teams and since we lost Kary Campbell and James Thrash, we can't lose Rock too.

"You can't cut Rock, because he is critical on ALL special teams packages.."

Rock Cartwright isn't synonymous with the word 'critical'.

Rock Cartwright is expendable. He isn't all-decade special teams. Why?

Because it doesn't exists. If Rock was the kicker or punter, I wouldn't undercut his importance, but he's just another guy on special teams.

Like all the other backups or camp fodder currently on the team.

Despite the loss, I was pretty happy overall about tonight's performance. It was good to see Jason play very well tonight. He made some good decisions with the ball. I've been also happy about Malcolm Kelly's performance this preseason. Hopefully, it'll translate during the regular.

Defense wasn't as good but it was good to see Big Al put the hurt on Brady. Pats early reports say Tommy's got a "sore shoulder." The AFC East will definitely appreciate that.

Special teams...~Sigh~...you are terrible. The last punt coverage gave away the game. To be fair about Suisam's kick, Colt did give away a blockhead sack in the previous play. I personally like Colt and would like to see him on the team but another red zone interception? That's unacceptable.

improved o-line + big reliable receivers in red zone (with more practice) = more touchdowns for redskins offense (Let's see what JC can do with these receivers and time to throw the football)
