A new (pre)season finally begins: What to watch for

The Redskins' first game of the season is finally here, albeit only a preseason game. But after the debacle of 2009, anything that moves the conversation forward for this franchise is a very good thing.

So with the Redskins playing host to the Buffalo Bills tonight at FedEx Field, let's focus on what to watch for in the preseason opener. Coach Mike Shanahan will lead the Redskins on the field for the first time, and that's must-see television.

Owner Daniel Snyder turned over control of the franchise to Shanahan in an effort restore the organization to the level of Super Bowl-winning success it enjoyed during Gibbs I. Shanahan has the credentials (three Super Bowl championships, including two as a head coach), and the vibe at Redskins Park has been much improved since Shanahan arrived in Ashburn. Shanahan's presence alone on the sideline will be worth a lot for the Redskins, and he will begin to set the tone tonight.

Pro Bowl quarterback Donovan McNabb also makes his Redskins debut tonight. By any objective criteria, McNabb is among the elite quarterbacks of his generation, and the Redskins expect to benefit as much from his leadership skills as his powerful right arm. McNabb is scheduled to play a maximum of 18 snaps tonight, so that's not a lot of time. But just having McNabb on the field, and his reassuring presence in the huddle, means much more for the long-term psyche of this team than his preseason production will.

McNabb already has inspired confidence in his teammates. In a text message to a reporter recently, one prominent member of the Redskins' defense wrote that McNabb has made it clear the Redskins will be all about business this season. He has been an extension of Shanahan in terms of keeping the focus on football, which rarely has been the case at Redskins Park recently.

Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan is waiting for someone to emerge and grab the wide receiver spot opposite Santana Moss. Third-year player Devin Thomas has said all the right things publicly about his poor position on the depth chart (he's listed as the third split end), but Thomas is eager to show the Shanahans he is the right man to be paired with Moss, several team sources say. Thomas apparently plans to treat every preseason game as if his career is on the line, which it may be at this point.

Throughout training camp, it has been easy to see why the Redskins used the fourth overall pick on left tackle Trent Williams and then guaranteed him at least $36.5 million. His footwork, balance, hand placement and athleticism - the kid has the complete package. Offensive line coach Chris Foerster recently acknowledged his face is often creased by a wide grin when he watches Williams work against the defensive line in one-on-one drills.

Before the draft, a prominent AFC line coach raved about Williams's ability. People at the University of Oklahoma believe Williams could be as great as anyone who has ever played his position, as long as he remains focused and is willing to work. Redskins fans could be watching a future Hall of Famer - and it starts tonight.

Defensively, the most significant storyline - or distraction - in training camp has been the status of defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth, who will play tonight despite missing more than a week of camp after failing a conditioning test and battling a knee problem. Haynesworth will work as the nose tackle with the second team, but he will be monitored closely, because players and coaches alike believe the Redskins' best defensive unit includes Haynesworth on the field, buying into his new role.

LaRon "Dirty 30" Landry moves from free safety, which he played the past two seasons, back to strong safety, the position he was drafted to play. Landry has bulked up and seems to have a good grasp of defensive coordinator Jim Haslett's aggressive 3-4 scheme. This is a big season for Landry, and good starts are always welcomed.

Kareem Moore, Landry's replacement at free safety, has been the talk of camp. He has displayed excellent ball skills, especially on deep balls, and it would be good, for his sake, if he continued to impress the coaching staff in every opportunity.

Running back Clinton Portis is playing with a huge chip on his shoulder this season. He's in top shape (around 217 pounds) after playing at more than 230 pounds last season and determined to prove he's still an elite back. The preseason isn't Portis's thing. But he is following Mike Shanahan's lead, so don't be surprised if he provides more effort than he's used to at this time of the year.

Veteran Willie Parker is listed as the fourth-string running back, so he doesn't have time to waste. His long climb begins tonight if he wants to make the opening 53-man roster.
The young guys will get most of the snaps tonight. The veterans will laugh on the sidelines. And Shanahan will watch attentively while leading.

Finally, the page has turned on last season for the Redskins. It's time for a football game.

Go REDSKINS!!!!!

Just please keep McNabb upright. But with Heyer starting I'm scared that might not happen.

Besides McNabb, I'm really interested to see how Rex does, and I think Torain might be this year's Marcus Mason... although that might not be a good thing since he got cut like 23434 times.

ZEKE'S MIDSUMMER HARVEST REPORT

The first plum tree, and its 1,000 or so Santa Rosa plums, is done for the year. The second tree, with its larger satsuma plums, is about 2/3 of the way picked ... maybe 250 more plums. The satsumas have terrific flavor.

The 3 eggplant plants have yielded Just 1 eggplant so far, two more are getting close. The 2 heirloom tomato plants have given up just 1 so far, but several more are ripening and it looks like about 20 are on the way.

Lemons (1 tree) and oranges (2 trees) are a long way off, but the fruit has begun developing. The cherries, are of course, long done for the year.

And that's the harvest update. Hope you enjoyed it.

SNYDER NOMINATED FOR NOBEL PEACE PRIZE

LANDOVER, MD – Members of the Nobel Committee are flying in from Norway to be among the dignitaries and special guests expected to attend tonight's preseason opening football game between the host Washington Redskins and the visiting Buffalo Bills.

Committee members want to determine if Redskin owner Dan Snyder deserves international recognition for his annual act of bringing hope and the promise of change to the hapless NFL franchise and fan base for America’s capital city.

This is the same committee that awarded President Barrack Obama its Peace Prize for allegedly bringing hope to a troubled world, despite the fact the president had only been in office for less than two months and had yet to accomplish anything of real significance when he received his award.

“It’s an annual rite for Washington fans,” explained Rolf Laarsen, a Nobel committee member. “Every year or two, Mr. Snyder brings in a new coach and another new set of overpaid marquee players, and every year the fans go all out, drink the kool aid, buy the merchandise, and start the season with the delusion that this might finally be the year when the team breaks out of its decade-long funk and competes for a championship.”

This year’s coach is the legendary Mike Shanahan, who led the Denver Broncos to Superbowl victories in 1997 and 1998. This year’s set of marquee players are led by aging quarterback Donovan McNabb, traded from the Philadelphia Eagles in the off-season for a couple of draft picks – and rookie Trent Williams, an offensive tackle from the University of Oklahoma who was the fourth overall selection in this year’s college draft.

While no one outside of Washington really expects this team to be much better or worse than the other mediocre teams of the “Snyder era,” the difference this year appears to be that Snyder “finally learned his lesson” and decided to entrust his enterprise to a “real professional football man.” He hired a new general manager, Bruce Allen -- son of former Redskin coach George Allen -- to run the team’s front office and help it dig out from the long debacle of former vice president for football operations -- and continuing close Snyder confidante -- Vinny Cerrato.

Also among the invited guests for tonight’s game are members of the Vatican’s inner sanctum – who have been asked to determine whether Snyder can be beatified for sainthood while he is still alive.

“Dan truly has people believing in miracles again,” explained one bishop with the Vatican team, “and again, despite all evidence to the contrary. The truth is, this team hasn’t improved much from last year and will probably be lucky to go 7-9 this season –- but that’s not going to stop the diehards from believing again that this could be the year when it all comes together for them.”

He concluded, “But if by some remote chance such a miracle would happen here, well then we would want to be here to witness it too.”

I expect him to struggle the first few snaps as he adjusts to the speed, but Trent should be fun to watch this year.

Again, if it's just 18 plays, we hope for one solid scoring drive that results in a touchdown.

I'd feature Larry Johnson, not CP.

I'd feed the ball to DT and J Galloway.

In any event, this game should be all offense all the time.

It's about time for the Bills to get paid!!!

Haynesworth is easily a zero distraction to everybody but media and headcoach. He's one of the teams biggest assets if coach wants to win, if coach has personal reasons than he will continue with his Haynesworth clown show. Big boy is the least of the defensive concerns, and if the other d-teammates played as hard and a part of the whole as well as he wants and does, they will be successful. I see most coaches instilling one unified team priorty, but don't matter if it isn't the headman.

OMG, our O-line looks GOOD.

Posted by: rachel216 | August 13, 2010 8:21 PM | Report abuse

Really nice to see someone other than our 4th string scoring points in a preseason game.

What happened to Larry Johnson?

Posted by: dlhaze1 | August 13, 2010 8:21 PM | Report abuse

Great block by Lichtensteiger for the TD.

Posted by: stevebeagrie | August 13, 2010 8:22 PM | Report abuse

First quarter recap:
Offense looks good. The pocket is actually a pocket, McNabb can still run, Portis looks like he's ready to break off a 40 yard run every play. Cooley's back. Lots of different wideouts making catches.
Defense looks like nice pass rush, but bad pursuit to runners. Poor tackling just like last year, especially DHall. That last play was ALL Edwards flustered by pass rush + DHall pick.

Last thought: why do we have so many players named Williams? I just heard "handoff to Williams" and I have no idea who it is. And this is with one of them out with blood clots...

Posted by: Keiser | August 13, 2010 8:22 PM | Report abuse

whoa, this is weird. for some reason, these plays run by the redskins are neither predictable OR bland.

OHHHH, right, we have professionals in charge now.

Liking the play calling thus far

Posted by: --swb | August 13, 2010 8:22 PM | Report abuse

Remember last preseason.....I don't think the skins first half offense scored a TD in any of the games.

Posted by: TheDirtySanchez | August 13, 2010 8:23 PM | Report abuse

Well we got 14 more points than last year's first preseason game

Amen, I told my GB fan roommate that was the most positive part of this whole new regime because he'll be our next head coach.

Exactly! So hit Edwards!

He's not a new leg, we grabbed him from the UFL last season after week 13, great power kicker kicked the game winning field goal in the UFL.

Snyder needs a tailor. The sleeves on that shirt kind of have that pirate look.

Posted by: SMACK1 | August 13, 2010 8:27 PM | Report abuse

Alright, alright, I walked into that one - I meant that I wanted just a little information on Williams (as opposed some crazy long debate or something)

You guys crack me up to no end.

I hate it when they use that terrible end-zone shot on punt returns. From what little you could see, Banks at least looked pretty fast

Nice effort sharing the ball, without really showing much, playbook wise. Ryan Torain's looked good, as have all the OL.

Happy, so far.

Posted by: freakzilla | August 13, 2010 8:39 PM | Report abuse

I know it's only preseason, but this is fun to watch, kicking someone else's rear instead of trying to talk around us getting kicked.

Did we score 21 points in the first half of any game the past 2 years?

Maybe the Saints game we hung on to win?

Posted by: noonefromtampa | August 13, 2010 8:39 PM | Report abuse

I am so happy.....watching the redskins (I Understand it's pre-season, but they aren't stinking up the joint), getting drunk on bourbon....and the wife just went to bed. Sigh.....

Oh and the Jags just ripped off a 60 or so yard td against the iggles.

Posted by: SMACK1 | August 13, 2010 8:39 PM | Report abuse

Hate to say it, but Devin really is performing as a 3rd teamer. Armstrong made a play, Williams, Galloway was open deep, Wade open twice. Thomas two drops (Kick off, Red Zone).

Posted by: TWISI | August 13, 2010 8:40 PM | Report abuse

First pump fake by a Redskin QB in several years.

Posted by: Chia_Pet | August 13, 2010 8:40 PM | Report abuse

you know, I've always LIKED Jason Campbell, as a fairly classy guy, and wanted him to succeed. BUT:

I've seen at least 3 balls thrown by McNapp and Grossman, that I've said, Campbell wouldn't make that throw.

And I don't mean, that he'd overthrow it, or otherwis throw a bad pass - he just didn't have the ability or desire to throw into close coverage, even if he could throw it where no one but a Redskin could catch it.
