Cardinals beat Redskins, 20-10

Updated: 1 a.m.
In their final preseason tuneup before next Sunday night's opener against the Dallas Cowboys, the Redskins lost to the Arizona Cardinals, 20-10.

On a night when some players needed to stand out to secure spots on the team, some made an impression, perhaps most notably wide receiver Terrence Austin and linebackers Robert Henson and Chris Wilson. But they will have to wait until Saturday to see if their last-ditch efforts paid off.

It took just one play in the fourth quarter for the Redskins to finally find the end zone, as Richard Bartel hit Austin for a 21-yard touchdown to pull the Redskins within 20-10.

Austin, a seventh round draft pick, ran a nice route and spun off his defender for the score.

Defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth remained in the game in the fourth quarter, a major surprise considering his stature and the importance of a final preseason game. Haynesworth played through the end of the game, and the next questions will be how he reacts and what role he plays in the season opener next Sunday night.

John Beck threw an interception on the Redskins second drive of the quarter, appearing to think that Devin Thomas was going to continue a crossing route when Thomas instead stopped. Thomas forced a fumble on the return, but Arizona recovered.

The interception did not lead to anything, however, as the Redskins forced a three-and-out.

Cornerback Justin Tryon grabbed an interception of his own later in the quarter, stepping in front of a pass in the back of the end zone to make one final claim for a spot on the Redskins' 53-man roster. Ryan Torain and Curtis Gatewood appeared to force a special teams fumble at the end of the night, and Ramzee Robinson made the recovery.

3rd quarter
Updated 12:15 a.m.
In the third quarter, the Redskins pass blocking again continued to struggle while linebackers Chris Wilson and Robert Henson continued to stand out. The biggest news, however, may have been that Albert Haynesworth came back out in pads and played the whole third quarter against the Cardinals backups.

Haynesworth has not yet earned his way into the starting lineup and already complained this preseason about being left in the game until the third quarter. Tonight he played when the 22 starters were not even in pads.

The Redskins offense could not get going on tits first drive, which ended when running back Willie Parker was run over by Monty Beisel, who sacked quarterback Richard Bartel.

Chris Wilson turned in a tackle for loss but then was beat in coverage by Alfonso Smith, and Robert Henson continued to have his name called. Arizona was able to drive behind third string quarterback Max Hall, who turned in passes for 17 yards and another for 21 yards. Byron Westbrook, who earlier this week was questioned about reports he had been cut, struggled in coverage all night and was again beat on this drive.

The Cardinal drive stalled inside the Redskins 10-yard line, however, and Jay Feely hit a 22-yard field goal to extend the lead 13-3.

Brandon Banks dropped a pass on the Redskins next drive, while rookie Terrence Austin caught a third down pass but did not pick up enough for a first down, forcing another Redskins punt.

Hall rushed for an Arizona touchdown on the Cardinals next drive, increasing the lead to 20-3. Henson, went down with a right knee injury.

Hall again found space in the Redskins secondary, hitting Max Komar on a 34-yard pass that beat Ramzee Robinson to set up his own six-yard scoring run.

The Redskins started to move the ball down the field as the quarter came to an end, with Brandon Banks snagging three receptions during the drive.

2nd quarter
Updated: 11:25

The second quarter showcased some strong performances and some not-so-stellar ones from players trying to crack the Redskins' roster.

Neither offense was able to put much together, but there were some encouraging performances on defense for Washington. Linebacker Robert Henson continued his strong play throughout the half and linebacker Chris Wilson made a nice tackle behind the line of scrimmage.

Offensively, the Redskins offensive line struggled to protect quarterback Richard Bartel. On one play, guard Kory Lichtensteiger was pushed right back into Bartel for a sack.

The Cardinals were the first team to get the ball into the end zone, going 81 yards on their second drive of the quarter and capping it with a three-yard touchdown run by Alfonso Smith. The drive was put together mostly on the ground, though Arizona backup quarterback Max Hall hit some timely passes to move Arizona from inside its 20, and a 16-yard pass that moved the Cardinals from the Redskins 19-yard-line to the three.

The half ended with the Cardinals leading 10-3 when kicker Graham Gano left a 58-yard field goal short after John Beck led the Redskins from their own 22-yard line into field goal range.

1st quarter

There was news even before the Redskins fourth and final preseason game began when it was announced that 29 players would not see the field. Two others, offensive lineman Jammal Brown and Trent Williams were not in pads either. So all 22 starters were expected to sit out.

But several players were fighting for the final few jobs on the roster and it was the defense that got the first shot at impressing coaches.

After allowing the Cardinals to drive from their own 22 yard line into Washington territory - a Derek Anderson pass to Stephen Williams and a 27-yard pass to Early Doucet were the key plays-the defense clamped down and forced Arizona to settle for a 42-yard field goal and a 3-0 lead.

On the drive, cornerback Justin Tryon allowed the reception to Williams but then came back with a nice tackle for loss.

Led by quarterback Richard Bartel, a somewhat surprising starter, the Redskins drove down the field on their first drive to set up a 50-yard field goal by kicker Graham Gano.

In the battle for the third-string running back job, Willie Parker got the first look and broke off a 13-yard run. He finished with three carries for 19 yards on the drive. Receiver Devin Thomas, also fighting for a job, made a catch on third down to pick up a first down for Washington.

The Redskins defense impressed in the second drive, forcing a three-and-out when second-year linebacker Robert Henson sacked Arizona's Matt Leinart.

After returning the opening kickoff for 40 yards, receiver Brandon Banks attempted to catch a punt as he quickly backpedaled and muffed it, though he recovered his own drop. Still, it was not an encouraging moment for Banks, who is hoping to crack the final 53-man roster based mostly on his return abilities.

I can already see why they like Beck more than Bartell. May as well call Bartell Mr. Checkdown, because he's refusing to throw the ball downfield

One bright spot on the O line has been Erik Cook at Center. He is consistently stonewalling his man on pass protection and doing a good job on sealing off the guy in front of him on running plays.

We've got a good prospect there.

Not a good kick by Gano. He struck the ball too low on his foot (down by his toe). Always ends up short and right when you do that.

Still think he's gonna be a great kicker for us, though.

My impressions are that Henson (if not too terribly injured) makes the team. I would put the lock on Westbrook being cut, he's looked terrible. Always beat or out of position. Parker looked good at the beginning but not so much since then.

Banks has to make this team. Could be a lethal weapon in the slot and an elite PR in a couple years when he gets stronger and works on his hands.

Bartel looks really good. Looks like we've got a pickle at QB. Pretty much have to keep Beck with the new contract; is there any chance that Grossman might be released?? I know that seems highly unlikely but is it worth considering??

Nice pick, Tryon!

lh1- maybe I see the talent and that fact that after every game he says he's gonna showcase his talents and it never translates to the field. Neither of us know, but I know I expect more from him.

Whatt a puzzy call.

Albert: its not really voluntary. LOLOL.

Diesel, I saw the coach talking to Beck not DT. You don't know whether that was an option route that permitted DT to cut his route depending on the defense.

Exactly.

FYI, game over and Haynesworth is still in. I think i is kind of silly at this point. Shanny has made his point. Take him out so he doesn't get hurt on some ridiculous play.

Posted by: HokiesSkins | September 3, 2010 12:45 AM

It's OK, he's not really giving any effort.

Just sayin'.

Tough to say exactly...Neither of us know, to me it looked like a broken play that DT should have continued running, but maybe I expect too much from DT. Either way we need better options at WR and QB than those two.

I hate it for guys like Shay Hodge. You can just see their dreams dying in their eyes as they miss a catch and come off the field. They just know they'll never see an NFL field again.

I'm not trying to make excuses for anyone...but did the ball seem really hard to hang onto tonight?

i hate to say it, but devin really might not make this team. hope he does though.

He's getting his cardio in that's for sure. They wanted to make sure he could stand up for that long. Game shape anyone? No pulled butt cheeks this year.

So what point has Shanahan proved concerning Haynesworth? Is the risk worth it? Was Shanahan blind not to see the difference in our defense when Haynesworth and Orakpo are both on the right? Was Haynesworth actually sucking it to the coach by putting in a sub-par effort? I think Shanahan is playing with fire!

Definitely. From the seat on my couch, it is tough to tell who was at fault. My knee jerk was to blame DT11, but when I saw the replay, I could see it as possibly being on either of them. Just depends on the play call. DT11 did do some good things, including downfield blocking, which will impress Shanny. Don't give up on him yet. I think he will have a good year for us (assuming he makes the team).

Posted by: HokiesSkins | September 3, 2010 1:03 AM

I agree. He's our best blocking WR, he plays good teams cov, he has size (6'2), he's the most physical, the most talented.....but he never shows it on the field.

Posted by: Diesel44 | September 3, 2010 1:08 AM | Report abuse

Re DT11, nobody else stepped up to take his job. He played well on KR. Never saw guys like Roydell, Shay Hodge make any plays. Banks and Austin were up and down, mostly up especially Austin.

DT is on the team with SM, JG, AA And then its really almost a pickem for number 5 and 6. Several flawed guys can make a case. Hope the coaches see the wisdom in keeping Banks and feel like he can be taught to protect the ball. He is a game breaker. Looked good on a couple bubble screens and other plays in the 4th.

I think he is on a short leash with the fumbling... If I'm him i shag 100 punts a day from the juggs machine and however many Bidwell wants to kick.

If you keep Banks, that leaves 1 spot for Austin, Roydell, Shay Hodge ASSUMING they keep 8 and not 5.

I say keep Banks and Austin.

Cuts: Willie P, Lichtensteinbergerwitz, Oldenburg, Beck, Westbrook, Rhino are most obvious not already mentioned.

I think Bartel clearly outplayed Beck, and he has a bigger arm.

I foresee a LOT of Cooley, Davis, Santana, and Armstrong on the field at the same time.

Posted by: SkinsfaninKaneohe | September 3, 2010 1:10 AM | Report abuse

I can't understand why the Redskins decided to sign Beck. I thought Bartel looked a lot better overall in preseason especially tonight and he showed far more poise in the pocket. The numbers don't lie. If Banks could just hang onto the ball he'd be a heck of a WR but his hands may spell his doom. Send him to the PS. Haynesworth sucked out there. He played no better than any of the 3rd stringers imo. DT showed his experience out there tonight but I think Austin and Banks are better play makers. #80 will certainly be cut. Our backup secondary looked weak out there and is a cause for concern.

Watch the Jets game, Beck Vs Jets first team defense, maybe you'll know why.

Posted by: abxinc | September 3, 2010 1:21 AM | Report abuse

SkinsfaninKaneohe, you get a pass for missing the post about Beck from earlier today since you're so many hours behind, but quoting that post:

"According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Beck agreed to a two-year, $2.25 million contract extension and is now signed for a total of three years at $3.35 million. Rich Campbell of the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star says Beck signed the deal last week."

So no cutty for Becky.

didn't see the game, but good to hear the henson looked strong.

fwiw, I looked at some of Henson's highlights at TCU and like what I saw. The guy is fast and seems to have good form in his tackles. One thing, he seems to have pretty good hands. With a goal of more turnovers, its good to have an LB who can make a pick and run with it.

Posted by: zcezcest1 | September 3, 2010 1:40 AM | Report abuse

Good efforts: Henson, Wilson, Austen.

Except for the Fumbles: Banks

Still Brain Dead: #11

Average efforts. Everyone else except....

Awful Effort: Haynesworth. The sooner he's off this team, the better it will be.

QB's of the Future?: None in Redskins gear

All in all I expect Henson, Wilson and Austin to make the 53. Banks goes on Practice squad.

Pick a DB: Tryon, Robinson, Barnes, Westbrook--singularly un-impressive.

A loss like this to a team in our conference will set the Redskins back a decade. That's right, just about the time Daniel Snyder first "bought" them. I predict Norv Turner will be coaching by mid-season. Bruce Smith will come out of retirement and pitch his cell phone recycling plan during post-game interviews.

This one hurts. A lot. Not to mention, if you go way down on the list of "tie breakers," a preseason win by the Cards puts them in the playoffs and us sitting at home again.

Big Loss, tonight, boys. The kind you just don't recover from. Just Awful.

"The numbers don't lie."

Well, they certainly CAN lie, and frequently do when in the hands of a partisan fan. There's a long history of QBs looking great in preseason games (especially that last one) and never doing anything in the regular season.

Bartels and Beck have both looked good and bad in practice, and that's more important.

@HokiesSkins I co-sign "Don't think that int. was DT11's fault. Looks like he read the D properly and cut his route off. I like the fact that he hustled too and actually caused a fumble."

This is what I posted to Diesel remarks in the last thread:

Diesel, I guess you and I will agree to disagree on this one. As I saw it, Thomas ran the crossing route, stop where he was suppose to, turn towards the QB looking for the pass. Now, Beck might have saw something that Thomas didn't see while running his route, that made him throw the ball to the spot that he did. And, in my opinion, even if Thomas had of kept running. There was no way he could have caught that pass. It was at least 8-10 yards out in front of him.
