Two Coaching Search Items

Redskins Insider Loyalists:

Jon DeNunzio, sports editor at washingtonpost.com, here. I have two things for you:

1) A link to our Redskins Coaching Search Tracker, where we take the pulse of the search and try to display it graphically. Worth checking back there, because we try to update it with the latest relevant links and videos.

2) Speaking of videos, here's the straight dope from JLC, taped at about midday Thursday ...

It's all cleared up now!

Must be tough for Jasno -- same story every single day, only the names change. He could write it in his sleep.

The Redskins (pick one: interviewed or will interview today) (Fill in name), the (fill in number) candidate to meet with Dan Snyder for the job opening created when Joe Gibbs resigned. Gregg Williams continues to be the top candidate from discussions with (pick 2 of 3: scouts, executives, insiders).

The Redskins have indicated continuity is a big issue and several players are behind Williams, including (pick player) who said (pick quote).

Snyder likes to make a splash with big name hires, but the biggest name, Bill Cowher, seems uninterested at the present. Another name from the Redskins past, Russ Grimm has (choose one: been/not been) contacted according to his agent.

The search is expected to last (x more days) and the Redskins need to meet the Rooney Rule requirement of having interviewed at least one minority. They can fulfull this by interviewing (pick from: Meeks, Caldwell, Frazier).

Rap on Jim Mora. He coached the Falcons 3 season and each season they got worse. GG coached a bad Buffalo team and at least they improved somewhere in there. 1st year 3-13, next year 8-8, next 6-10.

Mora went from 11-5 to 8-8 to 7-9.

And now we know why JLaC is a print reporter. I keed, I keed.

I think JLaC is being held in a Serbian prison camp and needs Jack Bauer to rescue him. If you play the portion from 1:03 to 1:18 backwards, you get: "Help me I'm in a Serbian prison camp and I need Jack Bauer".

In this business, we call this a "hunch".

Similarly, I have a "hunch" that the 'Skins will pick GG as their new head coach in a press conference at mid-day tomorrow.

I was half-watching a Belichick presser as I was chatting and he was asked about songs that various teams use. I'm not sure which he was discussing, but he said he hated it. Then, after blabbing on a bit, he said he hated "Hail to the Redskins" from his days with the Giants.

Posted by: TheCindy | January 17, 2008 4:06 PM | Report abuse

I think it would be terrific on a lot of levels if Snyder were to dial up Len Pasquarelli and give him the scoop on this hire.

Might give our Skins a boost in the Hall voting. And it might soften Lenny's tone a bit, relative to the thinly veiled bitterness we've seen from him these past four year. But mainly because it might help Art get into the Hall, even a little teeny tiny bit.

Just a suggestion.

Posted by: NateinthePDX | January 17, 2008 4:07 PM | Report abuse

SOS...

No offense to WaPo, Cindy or Jasno, but the past several days has just been the same ole news rehashed with maybe a new interviewee... The articles, blog entries and now the video...

I can't see why they're not making this decision tonight and announcing tomorrow, if GG is indeed going to take the Helm.

If not, they might be giving heavy consideration to an outside candidates at which we should hear that they're are having 2nd/3rd interviews to wrap things up...

Posted by: TheCindy | January 17, 2008 4:18 PM | Report abuse

Speaking of suits: one of my best friends is getting married later this year. Instead of tuxes, we're all going to wear suits that he has picked out. The problem is that we're going to buy these suits, and they're less than the price of 20 martinis.

Question: do I get my own suit made bespoke to match theirs (in general, I only wear one specific designer's suits because only his suits fit my shoulders), or do I go naked?

Posted by: PDiddy | January 17, 2008 4:21 PM | Report abuse

Sheesh, quit pickin' on Jasno. Most of the ppl in my office dressed down today, myself included, because of the weather. Why should he wear a suit to the Park just so he can sit in a room with a laptop, a desk, and a phone, and wait for news that won't come till Monday? He's doing his job, cut him a little slack for his wardrobe. He's not an on-air anchor.

Posted by: jaradel | January 17, 2008 4:23 PM | Report abuse

So, the Post was trying to appease us with Jasno sitting in his dungeon, lights blaring at him while reciting his name, rank and serial number . . . . nice attempt but can someone please get in touch with the gnomes and tell us something?!?!?

Posted by: jclansburgh | January 17, 2008 4:25 PM | Report abuse

So it's wear the same crappy/cheap suit all the other guys are wearing, or have a tailor modify a suit you already have so that it matches the crappy/cheap one? I don't understand.

I guess this is a vote for 'naked' then.

Posted by: chris_skins_balt | January 17, 2008 4:28 PM | Report abuse

I don't know where people got the idea that journalists dress up for anything.

FWIW, Jasno looked pretty spiffy at the 'Skins game here in Seattle. He was at the stadium, representing the Post, and looked professional. I'm sure when he's at Redskins Park, he represents the Post in a similar fashion. There are better ways to criticize him, and we have our resident Ombudsman in Barno to do that for us.

By the way Mora means "sparrows" in Dutch.

I also thought of a new nickname for the team, the Washington Wombles!

Washington Wombles, coached by Jim (Little Sparrow) Mora Jnr.

I can see it inspiring fear into our opponents, can't you?

Diddy,

George Zimmer guarantees that you're gonna like the way you look.

Posted by: freakzilla | January 17, 2008 4:29 PM | Report abuse

Nate - I think PDiddy is saying that his option is to buy a new suit from his favorite designer and have it altered to look like the suits the other groomsmen are wearing, not alter a suit he already owns. That about right, PDiddy?

No offense, but I would not vote for the "naked" option. If you have to wear suits often, and you only wear suits by a certain designer, surely this one won't go to waste in your collection.

Posted by: _Stumped_ | January 17, 2008 4:49 PM | Report abuse

Diddy,

It depends on how much you like the friend. Personally, I can see no downside to naked, but any chance you can talk the guy into a better suit? If the concern is about limited funds for one or more of the other dudes, maybe pass a hat or something? Could be a wardrobe update for someone (maybe even leading to a job that pays enough to afford something better).

Back to naked, I definitely agree with turning the cost savings back into the martinis. Maybe splurge ... martinis all around.

Posted by: dcsween | January 17, 2008 4:52 PM | Report abuse

4thFloor, I see your point, but Jasno's not on the air the way, say, Brett Haber is. On the infrequent (I would say rare but they haven't been so rare) occasions that Jasno does make it on air, he is not the focal point. I have a feeling that if he thought there was going to be a presser today, he would have put on a suit, or at least a sportcoat and tie. There have been times, though, when pressers happened with very little advance notice (e.g. following Sean's shooting and death). I just think that, given how much of his job really is off-camera, and given the fact that none of us are beat reporters, we really don't have a right to criticize his wardrobe.

Personally, I feel that his attire in the blog post video is a non-issue. It was just a way to utilize the multimedia available for the blog. If it ends up being shown on the evening news, I will be surprised.

Posted by: jaradel | January 17, 2008 4:55 PM | Report abuse

Maybe we the adoring RI audience could create for a Jasno a "business smock," based on the same idea as the tuxedo t-shirt. He could keep it in the trunk of his Jetta and be ready for impromptu TV and Web video appearances at a moment's notice.

Another option would be to get him a black cap and gown, which he could don before making the aforementioned appearances under the moniker of "Professor Football."

Posted by: freakzilla | January 17, 2008 4:55 PM | Report abuse

I've seen Fletch (and Fletch Returns) and the only suits Irwin Fletcher ever wore were for investigative purposes.

Posted by: dcsween | January 17, 2008 4:56 PM | Report abuse

And he should change is voice...he could talk in a high screechy voice.

In regards to Vermiel, that would be continuity wouldn't it? Saunders continues to run the offense, Grilliams runs the defense, and Vermiel does what Joe did best. Call timeouts.

Don't forget Saunders has worked with Vermiel at two different teams, and it wouldn't be the first time Vermiel has come out of retirement.

For what its worth, Sportsnet just reported they have learned Gibbs supports Williams for the head coaching position.

Posted by: Lisa_R | January 17, 2008 6:14 PM | Report abuse

barno's frat bro says Joe Gibbs is supporting Gregg Williams for the head coaching job. How does barno's frat bro know this? Is barno's frat bro just wildly speculating? the nerve of barno's frat bro.

Look guys, I've kept it quiet for long enough. The reason there was a few days missing from my holiday summary, is that I was interviewing for the Head Coaching position. I should be announced shortly.

Let me be the first to say congratulations kost! If you need a new offensive coordinator, just let me know. I watch a lot of football and like to drink beer. Does that qualify me for the position?

Posted by: puttinforbird | January 17, 2008 6:21 PM | Report abuse

puttinforbird, that's exactly the type of offense I would be looking to install! You're hired!!

Posted by: kost52 | January 17, 2008 6:23 PM | Report abuse

kost, we have a talent_evaluator on staff as well.

I'm ready to supervise the cheerleaders. Just put me to work.

From the suggestion of 4-12 earlier in the year

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/main.jhtml?xml=/earth/2007/11/01/scibeer101.xml

The first change I will be making will be to replace the Gatorade on the sidelines, with coolers of Beer. Not only for rehydration, but I have a theory that Football is like pool, you play better when you're drunk!

What we need is Vitamin Beer.

Posted by: PDiddy | January 17, 2008 6:33 PM | Report abuse

Beer seems to work for rugby.

In fact, I'm fairly certain that beer was instrumental in the creation of rugby.

I'm thinking alot of the plays will be drawn on coasters and bar napkins. It will be extremely sophisticated. We might be lookin at a 15-20 coaster playbook.

Posted by: puttinforbird | January 17, 2008 6:43 PM | Report abuse

PDiddy, hahaha I reckon you'll have a few people applying to be your assistant!

Freak, that's right, they had been playing it for 50 years, then they decided to add a ball.

Posted by: kost52 | January 17, 2008 6:44 PM | Report abuse

Alright, enought talk about beer, I'm going to the bar to design some plays.
Cheers!

I am not excited by any of the announced candidates. GggW to me is a DC version of Norv (regardless what happens with the Chargers!).

The Times had an interesting column looking at sources of coaches -- GggW is WELL below the average in winning percentages of retread coaches, FWIW. He might end up being the next Bellicheck but I'm not sold.

I'd LOVE to have a super secret big name pop up for real (Marty, JJ, Cowher, etc).

Posted by: carocanesfan | January 17, 2008 6:50 PM | Report abuse

I sat next to puttinforbird in Seattle and I can tell you this...he'd make a great OC.

Every time we ran a great play, he said, ...."that's exactly what I would have called". And every time we ran something that didn't work, he said...."I never would have called that."

Puttin...you've got my vote. I might beef up the playbook a bit from 15-20 coasters...but definitely less than 700.

Posted by: dchandl3 | January 17, 2008 6:52 PM | Report abuse

A 15-20 coaster playbook would be much easier for JC to work with. He might not understand what the hell we're talking about though.

We can hire Benny Hill to be our Running Backs Coach. He never seems to get caught.

We can sign TDawg as our backup Full Back.

We can sign Kanye West as a WR. (If we're going to have a receiver who is useless on the field, he might as well be able to rap.)

dchandl3 - LMGO!!

Are there any positions you'll be apply for Nate?

Posted by: kost52 | January 17, 2008 7:20 PM | Report abuse

Hi Cindy, I hear you are going to be on WaPo Live tomorrow.....

Posted by: Lisa_R | January 17, 2008 7:20 PM | Report abuse

There is truth to that, Lisa. But not in the studio.

Posted by: TheCindy | January 17, 2008 7:23 PM | Report abuse

So Cindy, are they going to put up a picture of you, along with a picture of a phone so that the viewers aren't confused?

(And for the TV savvy, yes, I did steal that from Mr. Show.)

Posted by: freakzilla | January 17, 2008 7:27 PM | Report abuse

I want to be the MLB. So I can just lay the wood on anything that moves.

Posted by: jm220 | January 17, 2008 7:30 PM | Report abuse

kost, since I know you'll be keeping them around for continuity's sake, I would like a job hanging out with Bugel and Breaux and Bubba and listen to their war stories all day long, with beer.

Posted by: NateinthePDX | January 17, 2008 7:30 PM | Report abuse

Nate...

LOL! I have to admit (as much as I hate the Cowgirls) I was actually a little bit excited to hear mention Jimmy Johnson's name. It'll never happen, but he knows players/talent eval and is good at what he does (did)....

Posted by: carocanesfan | January 17, 2008 7:33 PM | Report abuse

Barno is the media liaison...

Posted by: NateinthePDX | January 17, 2008 07:17 PM

Who knew?

Nate's Official Position -

Bugel, Breaux & Bubba's Beer & Bagel Boy.

Posted by: kost52 | January 17, 2008 7:41 PM | Report abuse

You guys can't forget Chris Larry, Redcoat, and Sam3. And please make sure Smack gets the ball every time so I can blow him up. Then he can hold a press conference and be TO twin brother. lol

Posted by: jm220 | January 17, 2008 7:46 PM | Report abuse

I will be sure to check the show out, Cindy. You've got fans!

Posted by: Lisa_R | January 17, 2008 7:57 PM | Report abuse

Nate's Official Position -

kost, shouldn't Nate also be the team's liaison with the local Better Business Bureau?

And for those really cold weather games, he could be in charge of getting special winter headgear to the players as the team's Baliclava Broker.
