Unrestricted Betts

It's the last day of OTAs. A good time for Jason Reid to talk about Ladell Betts's potential role in Jim Zorn's West Coast Offense.

talent evaluator & chia pet.

chia pet is relatively new right?

i'm not saying it's him/her/it, but my cheddar is on em'.

Vinny Cerrato vs. Jason La Canfora: Who's Gonna Blink?

Posted by Dave McKenna on Jun. 12, 2008, at 9:52 am

It looks like the Washington Post/Redskins feud could be impacting the copy at the sports page.

The last two Skins features by beat reporter Jason La Canfora, against whom the Redskins have mounted a juvenile PR campaign, have been incredibly kind to the organization. The stories have heaped attention on new personnel guy Morocco Brown's great fabulous attitude and Clinton Portis' new great fabulous attitude.

The only hint of negativity in the pieces, and clearly the stick-out line in each, comes when La Canfora makes sure readers know Vinny Cerrato, the team's GM-on-steroids, has put him on his ignore list: "Cerrato, who declined requests to comment for this story..." and "Cerrato, who declined to comment for this story..." respectively.

The disclosures read less like a reporter's due diligence than an announcement: "Hey, everybody! Vinny won't talk to me even when I'm blowing him kisses!"

And now I can't wait to read La Canfora's next feature...

Here's some free advise, Sto: As long as the tone of your posts stay positive, folks won't bump heads with you so much. I posted angry at first because of the circus surrounding the head coaching search, and I was nearly crucified. I brought the tone down and now I'm merely tolerated.

Posted by: brownwood26 | June 12, 2008 12:39 PM | Report abuse

another tip for sto -

Panties, Maps and soccer references go a long way towards endearing yourself to the RI faithful. And if you can come up with a copy of Heavy Metal Parking lot autographed by Chris Cooley you'll make at least one friend here.

re: Ledell Betts - More touches = more fumbles.

Posted by: etrod | June 12, 2008 12:45 PM | Report abuse

you cant please everyone, you give more touches to betts, then half redskins nations will say why isnt CP in the game if we pay him all that money, then if CP is in they say why do we pay betts to stand on the sideline. betts was in on the 4th and 1 play against the giants and everyone said CP should have been in.

I think it just waisted conversation, betts is the back up if he plays he plays if not, then oh well

Posted by: Great One | June 12, 2008 12:52 PM | Report abuse

The Great one is totally right (go figure...he's great) CP is the feature back. end of story. I see this situation as the LT and michael turner saga in SD. Both backs are at least good but only one is great. The NFL is supposed to be the best of the best. Therefore the best players should play.

Posted by: Ben | June 12, 2008 1:01 PM | Report abuse

If Betts signed a contract for that amount of money thinking he was going to share carries with Clinton Portis and the money that Portis is making he's not a smart guy.

re: Ledell Betts - More touches = more fumbles.

Posted by: etrod | June 12, 2008 12:45 PM

Where does this stuff come from. The fact is, Portis is more of a fumbler than Betts:

Portis--1710 carries, 22 fumbles (1.3%)
Betts--659 carries, 8 fumbles (1.2%)

of course, in a different league is

Cartwright--146 carries, 3 fumbles (2.1%)

In other words, Cartwright carts it wrong.

The Truth does not come here to be slandered with racial slurs. I'd kindly ask you all to refrain in the future.

The Truth is not Terrell Owens, thank god.

The Truth thinks it is funny that no one notices that everyone is still posting anonymously except now they have a little word beside their post that still lends no evidence as to who has posted it. See below.

The Truth wins again!

The Truth thinks it would be interesting if the Skins looked to trade Betts or Portis for big returns.

The Truth, coming to a GM near you.

brownwood26 and etrod, thxs. the best advice is free advice. duly noted.

unfortunately i don't care too much for soccer, but do respect it. topography was never one of my strengths, and i'm a guy so panties i could do with out, and i try to suggest that to my girl when we're kickin it.

as far as the video, i can't watch it at work, but i'm guessing it's about betts in his role in the WCO? i think this what the skins RB's needed for sometime now. i hate to say it but i see betts becoming like westbrook in philly (ugh), and portis becoming like any RB that played in green bay with favre. hopefully people will start to respect the passing game as much as they did our running game.

i would also like to see portis and betts on the field at the same time. really should keep the defense guessing with the new offensive philosophy.

Good call te -- if we're talking about carries only. in terms of total touches it breaks down like such as:

Name Fumbles (since 2004) Carries (since 2004) Catches (since 2004) Total Touches (since 2004) Touches per Fumble Fumble Percentage (by touches)
Ladell Betts 10 481 87 568 56.8 1.76%
Clinton Portis 11 1003 110 1113 101.2 .99%

Nothing to see here folks.
Move along.

Posted by: Officer Barbrady | June 12, 2008 1:10 PM | Report abuse

I've said this before, but worth repeating, if Clinton's carries don't decrease, then he'll be wore out, in a year or two. When he was with Denver, he was carrying the ball no more than 275 times, and he was very effective. Take 100 of his carries and give them to Betts, and you accomplish 2 things:

1. Clinton is less beat up, and worn down by the end of the year, he is also fresher at the end of the games.

2. I think Ladell is a very talented guy, not more talented than CP, but talented. We saw what he could do when given the chance full time. He produced. Lets give him more of a chance to produce.

Just my .02.

Posted by: Greg | June 12, 2008 1:11 PM | Report abuse

Etrod,

Why are you excluding half of the players' careers? These guys have been in the league since 2002, but your stats are only for the last three years. Not sure that's a fair comparison.

Posted by: talent evaluator | June 12, 2008 1:16 PM | Report abuse

I'm with Greg on this one.

Posted by: talent evaluator | June 12, 2008 1:17 PM | Report abuse

'04 because that is the first year that they were teammates in the same system. also both came into the league in '02 so it's only 1/3 of their careers.

The link i posted goes in to greater details.

Posted by: etrod | June 12, 2008 1:18 PM | Report abuse

Maybe 2/5 of thier careers. Not so good at the maths.

Posted by: etrod | June 12, 2008 1:19 PM | Report abuse

maybe ladell just isn't an "off the bench" type of player. maybe he just can't get his "legs" in 3-4 carries, then either be pulled for CP or not be included in the package. but i'm definitely for having betts carry the ball at least 100+ times this year.

greg is right, they'll be doing Portis a favor.

Posted by: sto | June 12, 2008 1:20 PM | Report abuse

And for the record, I like Betts. He can be a very productive back. The fumbles are very concerning though.

Posted by: etrod | June 12, 2008 1:21 PM | Report abuse

It is opinion.

The issue is not if its Portis or Betts, the issue is if the design of the offense and the play calling can keep a Defense on their heels.

My opinion is that our D will be in the top ten again in 2008. The offense, well, I hope it's enough to keep us in the hunt and to bring Zorn back for season two. I expect some highs and some lows for the offense in 08.

What was that C word? Oh yeah, Continuity.

Posted by: Stumped | June 12, 2008 1:23 PM | Report abuse

Its not so much about doing Portis a favor, as it is about utilizing your assets. I'm convinced that a better split of the carries for these 2 will be a huge boost to this offense.

Posted by: Greg | June 12, 2008 1:25 PM | Report abuse

Everyone expects Portis to get the handoffs, so he should go out into pass patterns more often. Everyone expects Betts to catch passes, so they should hand off the ball and let him run. One thing about Zorn - expect the unexpected. Mighty Meidt just adds to the organized chaos.

HELLO!?!

Posted by: Rock Cartwright | June 12, 2008 1:27 PM | Report abuse

etrod,

Basically, the guy cooked the books. He put the numbers together by throwing out Portis's bad years and throwing out Betts' good years.

If they've been in the league six years, then six years of stats counts, not three. (Doesn't "since 2004" mean 2005, 2006, and 2007 -- three years, not four?).

What's with all the turbulence in here today? Friday the 13th isn't until tomorrow.

Posted by: Froot Loop | June 12, 2008 1:33 PM | Report abuse

I think we'll see a much more mixed up offense this year:

There will be some lingering confusion, probably through mid-season. It is a new offense.

The play calling and play design will be very well mixed; if not stirred, really shaken up. They've got a stats nerd that will have them taking calculated risks and keeping track of things so that opposing defenses can't tee off on them...no discernable patterns. It should be a shocker, compared to the conservative approach of Gibbs...More similar to the Toddmania of last season, when Saunders uncorked the play book.

Posted by: Micheal Wilbon | June 12, 2008 1:36 PM | Report abuse

if someone was punching me in the face for an hour straight, then told me they'll give me a break and for the next hour punch me in the arm, i'd say they would be using everything available as well as doing me a favor.

i'm sure as much as portis wants to be the man, he'll appreciate a little less work.

Posted by: sto | June 12, 2008 1:40 PM | Report abuse

2004 was included. I did some quick maths on the career stats:

Portis - 1710 carries 205 receptions 22 fumbles 87.0 touches per fumble 1.14% fumble rate.

Betts - 659 carries 126 receptions 12 fumbles 65.4 touches per fumble 1.52% fumble rate.

Posted by: etrod | June 12, 2008 1:42 PM | Report abuse

Line up in a three back set with Rock and Clinton on the sides ladell in the middle, and run the 3 back Option

Posted by: Alex35332 | June 12, 2008 1:45 PM | Report abuse

Etrod,

Thanks for working it out, and I concede that on total touches, Clinton has Ladell beat. It's basically the fumbled passes that did Ladell in -- looks like Clinton didn't have any.

I been watching the Zonr Pressers.

dammit the sunovabuck better be able to coach, because if he sucks and/or gets canned, I'm gonna be really disappointed. He seems to be the most likeable, human, self-deprecating, yet quietly leaderly guy they've had in the position ever.

He REALLY seams to have his act together. I've had my heart broken before, but I can see why he got the gig, after the FO was exposed to him once he was hired as OC.

He strikes me as the type of boss you don't want to disappoint. Of course pro athletes sometimes tend to be immature, so there's that...

Thoughts?
