Unrestricted Forecasts

Jason Reid previews Sunday's regular-season home finale against Philly.

Going to the game? According to the Capital Weather Gang's forecast, you may need to dress as if you were, somehow, the child of the Michelin man and the Gorton's fisherman. The forecast is a bit iffy (Yeah. D.C. is a tough town to be a TV weather poodle in.), so keep checking with the Gang. It may well be 65, sunny and balmy out there Sunday.

As usual, we'll be BOGO, Twittering (Sign up now. Or else.) and mobile texting (text REDSKINS to WPOST [97678]).

In other news, Danny Rouhier is back with a Skins-Bengals video. Dan Steinberg has the links. The first video has only one or two bad words; the second contains so many that, were Jack's kids to watch, their little ears would become seared flesh. And yet they would be laughing.

Please Santa, all I want for Christmas is to have Vinny Cerrato fired or to have him mysteriously disapear from existence!

Posted by: Devo2 | December 19, 2008 9:59 AM | Report abuse

I don't know the #s off top of my head.

You have to take the last signing bonus and calculate the years of the extension and divide it proportionally.

Then take the # of years he didn't play from his new extension divided by total years of extension and that's the percentage you use to multiply against the signing bonus.

There's some other parts to include, but I figured I went to deep in already.....

More good stuff Flounder.

some quotes I noticed :

"8. Phil Loadholt- Oklahoma, Sr (6-8 337 lbs) - Loadholt has slipped on my list. He now looks to be a late first day selection at best."

I LOVE hearing that. If this guy keeps slipping as many project, and we can snatch him in the 3rd, that's a freaking steal and a no-brainer. His combine numbers are gonna be crap most likely, but I don't care what a tackle's 40 time is personally. And people have this idea that he's not a hardworker, but when asked the most impressive thing about him, one of his fellow OL said "his work ethic." I really like Loadholt, and he seems like a good dude overall.

"5. Louis Vasquez- Texas Tech, Sr ( 6-6 335 lbs) - Despite playing in Texas Tech’s offense, Vasquez didn’t allow a sack last season. Part of this is because of his great blocking but keep in mind that very few quarterbacks get the ball out as quickly as Graham Harrell."

I hope NFL scouts are eating this up cause Graham Harrell would ROUTINELY have 7+ seconds per snap. To watch that OL play was just like they were playing against highschoolers a lot of the time. I'm not exaggerating at all. Harrell just had all day. Skins fans would've believe an OL could hold up like that.

According to this link, Jansen's signing bonus proration counts $2M/year through 2011.

So, if he was to retire this year, he would have to payback a little over $6M in bonus money. Which isn't happening. Unless he wants to pull a Jake Plummer, which would be stupid........

Jason Reid in a dark hoodie...I never watch the videos. Is he talking about jumping Larry Michael in the hallway?

Posted by: p1funk | December 19, 2008 10:07 AM | Report abuse

Okay, I just read JReid's piece on Devin Thomas......basically the guy still doesn't know the playbook heading into week 16, and doesn't seem to recognize that it's his fault, and that the playbook is new to EVERYONE ELSE as well, yet somehow everyone else seems to know it. I still like his potential, but if this guy shows up to camp next year out of shape or still doesn't know the playbook, he should be cut on the first day......he just whines about how tough it is to be a 21 year old millionaire, and they don't focus on him and what he needs to remember from the playbook each week. What a joke. If this was any other job the dude would have been fired weeks/months ago.

Agreed, but it is still (to me) unacceptable, whether it's the coach, player, or both. It's week 16. If you are getting paid to learn the playbook, you better know it before the season starts. It sounds like he just did not think it was that important........anyway, I stand by what I said about cutting him on the first day next year if he is out of shape or doesn't know the plays......

dl, RE: Devin Thomas

I agree with everything you're saying, but remember you quoted him saying that he was a 21 year old millionaire. Aside from the fact that he is a millionaire, he IS 21 - just now is able to walk into the ABC store and get a bottle of Goose. Around 21, 22, I myself started to piece this thing called life together - started to TRULY understand that you control your life, that you are responsible for whatever happens in YOUR life good or bad.

Hopefully this offseason this franchise can have moments of self-realization - I think this team is a mentally weak team more than anything.

I agree with you all about the JReid story...that didn't sound very good...it actually sounded alot like another Washington pro-athlete bust -- one Kwame Brown.

It shouldn't be hard to adjust to having millions of dollars, nor should it be hard to have at least a decent grasp of this offense by now. No one is expecting he be an expert yet...but you can't keep making the same mistakes.

Grow up.

We're you not around last year? The Vets on this team are mentally tough. Now, the younger guys with one exception are not as mentally fit as they should be.

Besides all that, one glaring issue with this team is that they always say they're Professionals and they'll go out and do their jobs. That's just is, professionals will do their jobs regardless if they enjoy it or are passionate. Just b/c you're professional doesn't mean you have your heart in what you're doing. That's the problem, our team is pay for play team. London Fletcher plays b/c he has passion and desire.

Look at NE, Baltimore's Defense, Brandon Jackobs, Bob Sanders, Shawn Merriam, Marion Barber...those guys play with passion, they run around like 'Ballers', they play the game b/c they love it, not b/c their professionals. Professionals play to get paid.

Posted by: Devo2 | December 19, 2008 10:31 AM | Report abuse

Brandon Tate, WR out of UNC is projected to go undrafted in next year's draft. If he does, we should snatch him up quickly after the draft is over and get this guy to give 'em a look at preseason. Dude is a playmaker.

He does have some injury concerns, but it would be a no risk move to see what he has during preseason. I think he could be a solid NFL WR and he kinda reminds me of Devin Thomas.

Posted by: TheTruth11 | December 19, 2008 10:31 AM | Report abuse

Come on, At some point Devin is to blame but so are the coaches,

A good coach would get him up to speed but also focus on what he knows, if he only knows these plays and these routes then that is what he is going to run, but to not play someone because they supposedly dont know the playbook and you are losing is just plain stupid.

i can see if we were on a 6 game win streak but we are not, play devin and let him run go routes all day,

This zorn guy is starting to piss me off, like i said yesterday you mean to tell me that all 3 of your second round picks dont know the playbook?

Is Enron Riley WR out of Duke projected to be drafted? Probably...but if he weren't, he'd be a great FA pickup for camp (shameless Duke plug)...the guy is 6'3, 200+ and was by far the best offensive weapon the Devils had for four years...

Vinny and Mel Kiper are making good points on our rookie 'Pass Catchers'.

2-3 years before you are to expect them to catch on.

They mentioned Roddy White who was a declared bust for 3 years and is now in the pro bowl. And Ted Ginn this year has finally caught on.

Now he's talking about rookie DLineman. Pointed out D Harvey had no tackles last night. Gohlston looking like a bust. And most rookies have no more than 1 sack........

Posted by: DaReal4th | December 19, 2008 10:40 AM | Report abuse

The most telling part of the article is Stan Hixon saying "in this offense, we pretty much run the same plays every week" (paraphrased).

This highlights 2 things:

(1) This is probably the reason the offensive scheme is failing. It was great early in the season when teams didn't know what was coming, but now they can read it pre-snap. Even a Ravens player after the game said "their offense is just so BASIC."

(2) It shows just how mentally inadequate Thomas has been this season. They run the same plays every week, and he STILL can't get the routes right? (he admitted to running a short route on a "misthrow" by JC). Eventually, something's got to give. He's been beyond disappointing at this point. To me, this does not seem like a guy transitioning into being a great or even good WR in the NFL. Thomas seriously needs to pick it up.

Posted by: psps23 | December 19, 2008 10:40 AM | Report abuse

Agreed......I just hope that next year, Zorn can show what happens to players when they are lazy, immature, or out of shape. What does it say to guys like Campbell or Portis who are obviously busting their butts to know the plays, when guys who don't know they plays are still on the gameday roster? Accountability needs to be established in a major way next year.

Also, I am with CL. Lack of pass rush/sacks IS indeed an issue that has to be addressed. What has the #5 ranking gotten us thus far? A few timely sacks could have meant a win or 2 more this year. Opposing QB's simply do not fear this defense like they do the 4 defenses ranked ahead of them. And probably a few ranked after.....they also seem to know that our d seems to wilt when there's 8 minustes left in a game.

TRADE DOWN!

Trade back to later in the 1st round for in exchange for a 2nd round pick (or a 1st next year, which we would probably package in some rediculous deal that would set us back another decade...)

Trade back in the third round for another pick, and maybe even in the 5th.

We need 6 or 7 picks in this draft, which is FULL of solid offensive and defensive lineman, because we have so many other needs (LB, for example...)

Posted by: mrizzle | December 19, 2008 10:44 AM | Report abuse

If I'm a receiver in the NFL and it's 3rd down, 4 to go, and I can't remember what my route is EXACTLY, just that I have an out short out pattern...I'm guessing that the sucker is a pattern for at least 4 yards. Why would you ever run it short?

Kelly needs to get healthy...all the way.

Thomas needs to grow up this offseason and hit the books.

I haven't seen enough of Kelly to know if he can play or not, though the players say he can. Thomas certainly seems athletically gifted enough to play at this level, but he won't make it if he doesn't hit the books...

I think the point is he asks the same question every time, and he gets an answer.

Also if they averaged more then 10 points a game they may have one some more games as well.

The defense has held teams to under 20 points alot this year that is good enough for a team to win.

Agreed. This season going into the shtter is all due to the offense being pathetic. And maybe Jasno doen't need to ask every week. BUT, I would be much happier to see a real pass rush next year. You look at the defenses that score, and it usually correlates with pressure an the qb. IMO they could also use some more emotion. Ray Lewis is kind of a joke (as I believe London Fletcher will allude to without naming names), but he sure as heck gets that defense fired up. A fired up d can get the whole team fired up too......

Roddy White has been good for three years now. This is not his first season as good. I know I have had him on my fantasy team, where he put up numbers for the Falcons with QB confusion and ineptitude.

Also if you accept their assertion on Ginn than they have to adjust their assessment to "WR take 1 year to develop" since his coming out year is year 2. AND Ginn contributed right away as kick returner.

Vinny is a dueche no talent hack and I don't care what friends he has n his vanity radio show to give him HJs.

"It's been hard," he said. "Coming into a new environment, and just trying to grasp everything, it's tough. As far as financially, living on your own and doing all the things you're supposed to do as an NFL player, I mean, there's a lot going on.

"You have to get into that routine of knowing how to come in on time, knowing how to be where you're supposed to b e and how to handle off the field with on the field. That's kind of how the situation has been for me the whole season. I'm just trying to find my comfort zone."

Ugh give me a break. You mean its hard being rich, playing a game for a living, reading a playbook, and getting to practice on time.
