Unrestricted: OTA Recap

Gang,

This went up Friday, but we forgot to post it to the blog. Since nothing has really changed on the team since then, and J-Reid 1) introduced a new wrinkle or two and 2) asked for more feedback, I thought I'd post it today. Enjoy.

Since it's the off-season and an incredibly boring time, I'll throw something out for discussion... Looking at the pic of Zorn and Cambell brought to mind a recent interview Zorn gave on Channel 7, where he recounted Jason commenting on the new mechanics Zorn has him using:

Zorn: "He said, 'This doesn't feel right.' I said, Good! That means you're doing it right."

Does this comment (as well as others about now doing things the "right way") make you think that by implication he's saying that your former HOF coach has been having Jason do it "wrong?"

Posted by: Anonymous | June 16, 2008 11:52 AM | Report abuse

That Zorn question was mine.

Posted by: Nojunk4me | June 16, 2008 11:53 AM | Report abuse

I dont think that is a reflection of JOE GIBBS but just a change in philosophy. Joe had a philosophy of offense as a whole where Zorn is a little more detailed to every position and mechanics

Posted by: Great One | June 16, 2008 11:55 AM | Report abuse

That means Zorn is different from Gibbs.

It's not saying Gibbs taught him wrong......

Gibbs is Gibbs
Zorn is that guy.....

Etrod, as far as being Right-Libertarian vs Left libertarian, the big difference between the two I understand is a basic question of the core duty of the US government. A left libertarian would believe in the government has a duty to provide things like healthcare, public education and mass transit, where as a right libertarian believes the private sector can do this successfully. Both however believe in a smaller government, a right to individual and political liberty and are anti-authoritarian.

I can honestly say that in all my years of studying political propaganda that one never came up.

Alex, I think you are misunderstanding what authoritartian means ... its usage seemed a little biased in the chart you linked. Per that chart, I think the usage refers to the degree of government intervention. Also, the plotting of candidates on that graph is extraordinarily subjective to the extent it does not define the relevant issue of public policy. On health care, Nader probably would be much more authoritarian than some of the candidates so identified.

Generally, Nader's issues (esp. regarding the distinction between capitalism and corporatism) resonate with me. As a candidate for President, however, I can no longer abide him. His paranoia levels seem akin to Cheney's, as does his own sense about the degree of connection btwn issues for which he (and his followers) have advocated and himself as the person with the exclusive clarity of vision to deliver on those issues for the public.

If there is one question I would ask Jim Zorn, it would be...

Why were you so quick to name JC as the starter? What do you see in him that says he's your guy, especially after Collins played so well for a stretch?

Sweeen,

In that chart "authoritarian" refers to a belief in government intervention in what we would call the social spectrum. A notion that the government has any right to be involved in day to day life issues, does government have a right to declare a state religion, do they have the right to intervene on issues like abortion, and thing like that.

Its not where you stand on those issues per-se, which is why most the main stream political candidates are in the same side of the chart, is if you think the government should have a say.

there are variations of these charts and anyone in politics would have seen several versions. I tend to like ones that don't distinguish on "liberal' "conservative" issues like this one, but I have seen many of those in my lifetime, which give somewhat of a more distinguished difference between Democrats and Republicans on issues but then fail to give a fair distinction between small and large government.

Posted by: Alex35332 | June 16, 2008 12:52 PM | Report abuse

sicwidit as much as i hate to say it but although todd collins did awesome last year I dont see a guy at his age looking that good over the course of 16 games. Remember Brunell? great for awhile and then just painful to wathch. JC should be the starter if he plays poorly this year and keeps turning over the ball we could send collins in in relif until a new starter is found; but i dont see how anybody could see collins as a long term solution. Theres a reason he hit the free agent market and signed with the skins, no one else was willing to pay him much as hes more a backup than a starter. At least in my opinion

Earnhardt Jr. wishes he could play for Redskins

Dale Earnhardt Jr., on TNT NASCAR prerace Sunday, talked about envying his friend Chris Cooley, a Washington Redskins tight end: "I'd give up everything I've got to be Chris Cooley for a season. Hell, yes!" Sounds like the basis of a new reality TV show, especially if Earnhardt and the Washington Redskins had to, say, live on a deserted island.

From Cooley's blog:

10 questions with Jason Cambell
1. With Clinton Portis suffering from MPD back in '05 (Southeast Jerome, Sheriff Gonnagetcha, etc.) and #47 being known as Johnny Whiteguy and Captain Chaos, what nickname/personality would you adopt for yourself that you would like to stick with the fans? Southeast Jerome gets to arrest a lot of people. I would get to arrest Captain Chaos for causing a lot of problems around the Redskins Park.

2. With the game on the line, if you could throw to any receiver, past or present, high school, college or pro, who would that receiver be and why? I love all my Redskin receivers, but I would have to go to someone in the past. I haven't actually thrown to him, but I would love to take Jerry Rice. Currently I would have to go with the man in the middle. He tortures linebackers. On the inside he manhandles them one on one. Cool dog is a sledgehammer.

3. Jason, have you ever smelled the back of your left hand (the one that's securely lodged under the center's sweaty butt crack the entire game) after a game? I would imagine that hand would have to go through a thorough decontamination process after every game and practice. For everyone to know if you don't take a bath your butt crack stinks and I think that's what Rabach does to me. Imagine sweating for 2 hours and you're Casey Rabach and you're really hairy and stinky. Rabach has even farted on my hand which is a feelin that never really wears off. I can actually feel it while we're doing this interview right now. After each practice and game the first thing I do is wash my hands of all that chaotic stuff running off his sweaty, nasty body.

4. Would you ever wear the Cooley Short-Shorts? And if you did, who do you think would look better in them? I think I would look great in the 75' Ridells. They would defiantly cut off the circulation and I'd want the medics to be near by. I do think my legs would look the best on the team though, way better than Cooley's.

5. What would it look like if you and Tony Romo got into a fight? I have to say it would look like, I would be the hulk standing 6'5" and Romo would be like spider man, jumping around all over the place. I'm really not worried about getting into a fight with Romo. I think Jessica Simpson and the Cowboy fans are enough for him to handle.

6. Jason, how did you meet your present girlfriend Mercedes Lindsay? First of all she might of stalked me, but on the real tilt I met her downtown DC 5 or 6 times and she wouldn't go out with me because she said I was like any typical athlete. She finally did go out with me and since then we've been inseparable.

7. Your senior year at Auburn I was convinced you were Lionel Richie's son. That being said, what's your favorite Lionel Richie song to karaoke to? Lionel Richard has come up a lot this year and if I could sing and make as much money as him I would defiantly do that. My favorite song would come from a line we hear from Santana Moss on game day, "All night long, All night long! All night long!"

8. How much do you hate Alabama and what is it like having Samuels blocking for you? Do you guys get after each other when the Iron Bowl is played? War Eagle. I have nothing bad to say Alabama anymore, because I was undefeated against them. So there is nothing better than having Chris Samuels blocking my left side. I consider it an Alabama guy showing his support for an Auburn guy. I just expect Auburn to take over every time we play so we really don't have to get after each other.

9. JC, can you get me a date w/Colt Brennen? I guess all the girls think he's from Hawaii, and they want something new. He's really just another LA guy, but I guess we could start off the bidding with 100 dollars a date, payable to Cooley's site. Hahaha, just kidding.

10. What food was better Cooley's wedding or Randy Thomas' back yard BBQ? It's two different occasions and the food at Cooley's wedding was amazing. I'm a southern guy though and Randy cooks baby back ribs. I could take ribs any day.

So I been reading up on espresso makers and I'm pretty much down to deciding between the Saeco and he Gaggia. both are in the $250-300 range and are pumps, not steam.

Both get very good reviews, and no I'm not about to spend the $1,000 to $3,500 one can spend on an at home maker.

I know it's a cliche, me being a west coaster, but I am seriously addicted to Lattes, so what can I say?

I would imagine a Libertarian would go with a Krups, but I'm not a Libertarian.

Any thoughts on which is the better maker?

SKIPPY SPEAKS TRUTH TO POWER

Posted by: the truth | June 17, 2008 10:26 AM>

The Truth is nothing but a second string trip-off of Skippy. I'm Skippy and you're not. I have a metal plate in my head and live with Mama and the twin offspring of my dead sister in a Doublewide, along with my cat, Mr. Whiskers IV. My best friend is Floyd, the truck drivin' man and I really really like Lemon Meringue Pie.

Skippy has been drops in on this bog occasionally before Truth was a wet spot on the bed of his parents who never met. Skippy regurgitates his own, munificent blob, the poplar www.askskippy.blogspot.com.

On it Skippy answers questions whether or not they are asked first, like Jeopardy, only without Alice Tredeck.

Unlike Truth, who is mercilessly mocked by many on this broad, Skippy is unusually beloved by fiend and foe alike, and he have to fight off the ladies with a ten foot Pole, or maybe a tall Icelander.

Skippy just retuned from Lost Vegas where he had a few plops at the bar with NFL overlaid wideout, Jobert Walkman, of the formerly Lost Angeles Duh Raiders. After dinner, Skippy went to play some Bap Jap, and suggested Jobert go take in a strict show or dance and maybe spitz some Don Pelligrino campagne at his fellow and fellette dancers.

Yesterday, Skippy scratched his Fun Bunch, and in twisting his head parts, briefly picked up Radio Marti, in Havana, on The Plate. Did you know that Evian Gonzalez has converted to become a Red Commuterist, just like Fidel Castro?

General relativity is a theory of gravitation developed by Einstein in the years 1907-1915. The development of general relativity began with the equivalence principle, under which the states of accelerated motion and being at rest in a gravitational field (for example when standing on the surface of the Earth) are physically identical. The upshot of this is that free fall is inertial motion: In other words an object in free fall is falling because that is how objects move when there is no force being exerted on them, instead of this being due to the force of gravity as is the case in classical mechanics. This is incompatible with classical mechanics and special relativity because in those theories inertially moving objects cannot accelerate with respect to each other, but objects in free fall do so.

"ROY WILLIAMS VOWS TO PROVE CRITICS WRONG

Posted by Mike Florio on June 17, 2008, 8:11 a.m.

Cowboys safety Roy Williams, who has found himself on the wrong end of extensive criticism of late despite five straight Pro Bowl appearances, has addressed the situation in detail, and has vowed to have a big year in 2008.

"[T]here are a lot people questioning if I still got it," Williams said, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "I am going to show that I still got it. I am happy people are criticizing me."

Still, Williams is confused by the recent flood of questions regarding his ability. "Where did it all come from? That's the first thing. It came from one of my teammates [Greg Ellis]. . . . I kind of understand [where Greg was coming from]. Then I don't. But it's OK.
"Then the media has said some really hurtful things . . . like trade him and cut him. It did sting. It really did hurt to see that stuff.

"Ever since I re-dedicated my life to Christ is when I started catching all this hell."

If catching hell includes being under contract for $3.72 million in 2008, then we'd like to catch a little of it, too.

1) Pass fake, delayed draw to Portis
2) Out pattern to Cooley or Fred Davis
3) Something counter-treyish with a give to Betts
4) Over the middle to ARE
5) Screen to Portis
6) Post pattern to Santana
7) Draw to Sellars
8) Portis off tackle
9) Portis over the middle
10) Shot to Cooley in the middle

(can't see the reverse working too well. I'd rather see Portis run out to the flat and hurl it down field to Moss, who always seems to finds a way to run underneath the long ball)

"CHAMPAGNE SPRAYING PRECEDED DARRENT WILLIAMS MURDER

Posted by Mike Florio on June 17, 2008, 1:02 p.m.

Maybe it's a function of things being fairly slow right now in NFL circles. Regardless, the Javon Walker situation has created a major buzz on the Internet.

Then again, how often does a high-profile receiver turn up knocked out cold in the street after a weekend of spraying expensive champagne at one or more night clubs?

There are completely unfounded rumors (we repeat . . . completely unfounded rumors) that the incident started with a champagne bidding war between Walker and Floyd Mayweather, and that a member of Mayweather's entourage later stumbled upon Walker and proceeded to beat him into a pulp.

Apart from the question of whether the more recent champagne spraying and the subsequent cold-cocking are in any way related, we'd like to think that Walker would have sworn off champagne spraying given its role in the chain of events that resulted in Darrent Williams dying in Javon Walker's arms.

When Walker explained to Andrea Kremer of Real Sports the reason for keeping his bloody shirt from that night, Walker said, "It's just something that reminds me every day of what could happen and this is what happened to my friend."

Maybe it takes a second bloody shirt to help Walker realize that nothing good ever comes from spraying champagne (or any other beverage) onto a group of people that might not necessarily want to be sprayed with it.

UPDATE: There's really nothing to say about the following YouTube clip, which purports to be footage of Walker spraying the crowd with champagne at the Body English club.

1. Pass (batted down)
2. Run (stopped for loss of 2)
3. Draw (incomplete)
4. Punt
5-8. Lather, rinse, repeat steps 1-4.
9. Pass (completed, gain of 63 and TD)
10. Pass (completed, gain of 15).

If the offensive theory (WCO) is to run up the score early to place the burden on the opposition, I say you should play Portis early and let Betts and Sellars brutalize them at the line of scrimmage late in the game.

Plan B would be to show so many looks (formations and personnel) that the Defense has no clue. The trouble is this probably can't be done until everyone knows the play book, so it wouldn't work until later in the season.

For every 50 offensive plays:
Portis on the field for 30-35 with 15-20 touches.
Betts on for 15 or so with around 5 touches.
Nemo/Rock (whoever is better) for the difference with maybe 2-3 touches.

All 4 NFC east teams should be able to get 3+ wins from the NFC west, with Seattle being the hard one to beat. 2+ from the AFC North, the browns and pitt could give us all trouble. So thats 5 wins for everyone in our conference. If everyone splits the NFC East games that gives us 8 wins per team.

Natick will no longer use 'Redmen' nickname

By Associated Press | Tuesday, June 17, 2008 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Local Coverage

NATICK - A 15-month battle in Natick over the "Redmen" nickname has ended with the school committee voting again not to use it for high school sports teams.

The committee decision last week came after residents voted 2-1 in March in favor of asking the committee to reconsider its decision.

In its unanimous vote, committee members cited American Indians who said the name offended them.

Mary Anne Hendricks, sachem of the Natick Nipmuc Indians, hailed the vote and said history had been made.

Redmen supporters, who include former Natick High and NFL quarterback Doug Flutie, say the name is about town pride and tradition. They say they'll begin collecting signatures for a ballot question in November to overturn the school committee's decision.

Posted by: Alex35332 | June 17, 2008 3:19 PM

Alex, very bold predictions.
I don't think CP will get 2k combined. But would say he'll have a good year, maybe have more rec than rushing. CP will be vital to us, rushing, pass protection, and receiving out of the backfield. He is very dangerous in the open field.

Would love to see Soup throw for 3k+, but once again a lofty goal. He does need a break out year or the rumblings may start. Its just another year for another offense for him to learn. I think he need to read defenses better and make quicker decisions this season. I think you may be wrong on this one too. (And I hope I'm wrong about you being wrong)

Cooley may make the pro bowl again this year. 10 TD's is lofty. I'm going to give you this one. But don't be surprised if Davis doesn't hurt Cc's stats. If Soup's numbers are right, this number is right.

Carter getting 10 sacks is stretching it. Once again I hope I'm wrong but I just don't think he can do that. I'm not sold on our defensive line and their ability to pressure the Qb. Maybe I should be reviewing our schedule closer, in order to determine the olines he will face. I look for our defense to fall off. I'm not sold on Blache and our approach to the draft being totally offensive.

Wild card spot, I agree. The question here is Zorn and the defense. If our defense performs well and Zorn can get a productive offense and imaginative play calling we go to playoffs.

My keys to winning division:
Top 5 Defense.
Campbell steps out, top 3 NFC ranking.
No key injuries, or very few.

No control:
Eli has jinx year. Giants defense slips w/o Strahan (doubt that).
Romo wakes up and finally understands he's not as good as his stats with Parcels.
Eagles defense falters, Westbrook shows age.

Wild card is possible, winning division will require luck.

My opinion, we're a good offense away from being really good. We need 2-3 cornerbacks and 2-3 linebackers and 2-3 defensive linemen to be a top notch defense.

Posted by: Rando | June 17, 2008 4:43 PM | Report abuse

Rando, Carter had 10.5 last year, and Campbell threw for 2700, only playing in 13 games. I think Carter getting the same number or better isn't that far fetched, and I'm pretty sure that with the added weapons, and less conservative offense, Campbell will eclipse 3000.

Greg,
Thanks for the comment on Campbell, I wasn't aware he had 27 hundreds. If thats the case and he stays injury free, Alex number is good.

Carter having 10.5 last year has nothing to do with this year. And to tell the truth, he may have had 10.5 last year but it was a very quiet 10.5. We need a pass rusher that puts fear/pressure on the Qb without always making a sack. Carter doesn't do that in my opinion.

And, once again, I hope I'm wrong. I'm just trying to be realistic. Carter is undersized and not an intimidating defensive end.

Campbell has yet to prove to anyone that he is an elite qb. Able to win games down the stretch or under pressure. He hasn't won any playoff games of any stature either. He has to prove himself to the league and us fans.

Congrats to P2, KG, and Shuttlesworth. Those guys have all played 10 or more years, were very close to winning it all at some point, but were on teams that folded. KG to me is one the true class acts in sports and I was especially happy to see him win one.

I don't think you can get rid of Rip Hamilton. Sheed has to go though, he is there emotional leader on the court, and sometimes, he just doesn't have it. People like to compare him and Garnett in terms of raw emotion, but the big difference to me is that Rasheed will sometimes come out with none at all. And unlike Garnett, Sheed dosen't know how to channel it to strictly and only the game.

You can't get T'd up in crunch time. Sheed is gone as gone, I think.

McGrady is a good player, but not transcended. He has to have a good cast around him to succeed. I'm thinking McGrady with the Clippers or Blazers is a better idea.

Maybe even the Jazz. If you can't beat em'...

Wow, The Truth needs to find some truth in that the skins and falcons are both in the NFC, and the falcons suck. It will be a cold day in hell before they meet at the NFC championchip game.

I personally see no reason why CP can't get 2,000 combined yards when he'll prolly stack up at least 1,200-1,500 yards rushing and will have a potential field day receiving. It's not hard for a QB of any stature to rack up 3,000 yards in a season as long as he stays healthy. Cooley will get at least 10 TD's and most likely play in the probowl no matter how good/bad JC is. The only one that I'm not so sure of is Carter. 10 Sacks is a big number. No reason why he can't, but I just don't see him repeating that. I figure maybe 8 would be a more realistic #. Considering our division, as long as we win most of our non-division games, we should be in the playoffs. I genuinely don't believe we have what it takes to claim the division (unless literally everything goes in our favor).

I also wouldn't be surprised if Gibbs either taught JC wrong or didn't look closely enough at his technique so some of the problems could be fixed. No doubt, this year after Zorn gets through with him in the offseason, JC will be at least 50% better, progressing to about 100% better by the end of the season, barring injury. I also believe that when JC doesn't have to fumble around with his throwing motion, it will free up his mind to read defenses and make plays instead of worrying if he'll get stripped or the ball knocked down.

CAMPBELL's PROGRESS

" also wouldn't be surprised if Gibbs either taught JC wrong or didn't look closely enough at his technique so some of the problems could be fixed. No doubt, this year after Zorn gets through with him in the offseason, JC will be at least 50% better, progressing to about 100% better by the end of the season, barring injury."--KAREN

Interesting analysis, but we'll never know if you're right. The fact is last year, Campbell was playing behind a makeshift line all year, AND he didn't have much to choose from in the receiving department. When he had time and receivrs were open, he looked just fine throwing he ball. I think Zorn will be mostly tweaking, not retraining him.

Remember, Moss and Randle El were dinged and his top target for much of the year was a 65 year old wideout the Redskins originally drafted in the 35th round during the Sammy Baugh era.

It looks like Campbell will have a full array of weapons this year, and barring injury, and assuming full health recovery of the OLINE, he should have time to find his targets.

I agre with your timeline. Maybe not spectacular results early in the year, when the Redskins three 2nd rounders are still learning the NFL and Zorn's system, but by the end of the year JC should be in the high clover.

The Truth knows much more about basketball than some moron on this blog. The Truth was half-joking about Radmonavich and just pointing out how he completely disappeared this series.

The Truth is tired of playing Mr. Nice Guy.

The Truth knows that the Falcons and the Redskins are both in the NFC. The Truth was pointing out that his commercial will never happen because the Redskins aren't good enough to win the Superbowl, and the Falcons aren't good enough to make the Superbowl, and even if they both were, it would still be impossible.

Posted by: SMACK | June 18, 2008 1:19 PM | Report abuse

Corkczar, JC needed to be retrained with his foot movement (not going up and down and increasing his agility/speed), how he holds the ball to prevent fumbles, and speeding up his throwing motion. Granted, he wasn't horrific before Zorn, but he did need a lot of work. A lot of very difficult work because tweaking so much at once is so uncomfortable when you're used to doing it wrong. However, this can easilly be accomplished before the start of the season, which is the only important thing.

If the Dan wins (impossible as that may be given my strong tough background in punk music and soccer houliganism) he will be granted access to read all redskins related articles done by the post before they are printed and will have to meet his approval. Posted by: Greg | June 18, 2008 3:24 PM | Report abuse

Karen, don't you think 10 new coaches may have ten new techniques for the Qb. I think its coherent that changes are made when a new coach comes aboard, especially an ex-Qb. I don't think what Zorn is suggesting is bad, but don't see these things making him 100% better. In my opinion, Zorn should be working with Soup on pre-snap reads, audibles within his offense, and pulling the pin on his throws (more timely). JC is still a young Qb, but he must start developing and showing signs of greatness. He's at the same stage Patrick Ramsey was at, PR didn't get over the hump. I hope JC does.

All you guys thinking Cp has 2k+ Tyds for the season - do you think Cp has that kind of stamina left for an entire season? A Rb takes a pounding on almost every play, he's getting older and recovery time takes longer. Personally, I would rather see them spread yards over Betts and others moreso than giving Cp the major load. We need Cp to be fresh come playoff time.

My first comment on the "Truth". I really don't care to read about your living situation and bm's. Most of your dribble is a bit entertaining. Remember, rando knows things.

Another fantasy-related post (because I think it's been proven to everyone up here that we have nothing else interesting to talk about right now).

Did anyone see this bit in Matthew Berry's Love/Hate '08 piece today?

"The Redskins: I'm high on this team. Clinton Portis is obvious, like Jason Campbell as a sleeper, think Santana Moss has a very nice year and Antwaan Randle El will be bye-week worthy. Chris Cooley continues to be an underrated fantasy tight end. I actually met Randle El at ESPN recently when he was doing some interviews and he raved about Jim Zorn as a head coach. Raved. The West Coast offense that Zorn will install is a good fit for the personnel and there will be a decent amount of Fantasy goodness in the nation's capital this year."

When I saw "The Redskins" I scrolled back up to make sure I wasn't reading the Hate list.

Typically, I don't draft Redskins players, but it's nice to see some (fantasy) love on ESPN.com (for once!)

I find all this "Truth" business as tiresome as its purveyor probably finds the claptrap I post up here.

The insinuation that "I'm always right and everyone else is not just wrong, but incredibly fortunate to have point out and correct their pathetic wrongness" is innately disrespectful.

We've seen that line taken by a lot of sources, some anonymous and some not as anonymous, and it always rankles me.

I prefer the dialogue up here to be innately respectful. Though now that I think of it, this comment I'm typing does not seem to be very respectful. I'm going down a meta-comment rathole and I may need a map. Or maps.

Pleased to report a decent number of Nats fans in attendance at the Mariners-Nats contest on Sunday. Beyond Nathan Jr. and me, I mean.

Also pleased to report that the Nats won, completing a sweep of the M's. I mention it here because an event this minor may not have been covered back East. But it was fun to watch.

I was representing in my Nats jersey and hat but otherwise being a good citizen and not trying to provoke any trouble... not that those passive-aggressive Seattleites would have wanted any trouble!

One wag in a concessions line tried to bait me with a half-hearted "didn't expect to see any Expos fans here", but I resisted socking him in the nose. I also resisted telling him that his Mariners are also a new team, a team that by my reckoning has accomplished virtually nothing in its brief history, just like the Nats! (Yeah, so what that the Nats moved from Montreal. I hope I've made it clear that I don't really care.)

Beautiful day at a very nice ballpark, my little boy's first-ever big league game, and of course the happy result of a DC team's winning a game, however meaningless.

Here's to that other DC team coming to Seattle and winning in the stadium next door on November 23.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) -- The Atlanta Falcons released disgruntled safety Jimmy Williams on Tuesday, two years after trading up 10 spots to pick him in the second round of the NFL draft.

With only seven career starts in 27 games, Williams made a poor first impression on Smith, who demoted the former Virginia Tech standout to third string after he reported to a voluntary mini-camp nearly 20 pounds overweight.

I've got to believe they're taking a hard look at this guy out at Redskins Park -- and at several other franchises, for that matter.

Nope, no Bucs game this year. We could use the break since the Skins tend to struggle against those guys...

As for Jimmy Williams, I'm pretty sure he has some character issues. I'd love to look at him from a on-field standpoint, but not if he's going to follow the VT string of success in the prison system.

I'd have to say no as well to Williams. The "only 7 starts" was the part that bothered me. He sounds like he was 2 wasted draft picks for the Falcons.

Normally teams don't release players for being overweight, so there must have been more going on that just that.

I haven't heard back from Kost yet but I decided do a little research anyway.

So... I'm thinking that if there is enough interest up here, I will set up an RI Fantasy League for the coming season.

All those interested, please email me at usredcoat at gmail dot com. It looks like at ESPN we could have up to a 20-team league for free, so we could have conferences....

Anyone else want to be in the AFC? :)

I looked a bit at the ESPN program and it seems like a good choice. I've done Yahoo and FoxSports in the past (with mixed results). Anything that gives us free live scoring sounds like a winner to me!

I do have some questions about how exactly the conferences work. Do teams go head to head just within their 10 team conference, and then for the championship, play the winner of the other conference? Or are the conferences only "segregated" during the playoffs?

Posted by: redskirt | June 19, 2008 9:11 AM | Report abuse

I didn't delve that far in Redskirt, but it seems like if you go for the 'custom' league you can decide a lot of those things yourself, so that's what I'd propose to do.

Maybe we could get Alex - or Bucktown if they are still lurking - to design a shirt for the winner which we could all chip-in to pay for? That would give them exclusive bragging rights at any future shabingi (did I correctly pluralise?).

Readcoat,
Consider me "on it", not that its a rush job or anything. Though I would say that the Sweatshirt or Outerwear Jacket from Cafe Press would be nicer than a T-shirt for the winner.

In dark, slimming colors please. If I have to wear the winner's jacket, I want to look good in it.

So whatever we want the winner to get we can do.

Oh I'm liking that outerwear jacket idea, Alex. Kind of like the Masters blazer.

After a few years, we could have future shabingi (Redcoat, if that wasn't the formal pluralization of shabingus, it is now) peppered with RI jackets.

Except its a windbreaker and I don't think we will ever see the masters blazer be fitted for a XXL

Jimmy Williams was a projected top-15 draft pick but slipped to the second round which was why the Falcons traded up for him.

He doesn't have "character issues." He only had seven starts because he was injured. He did have issues with the Falcons coaching staff. Maybe they're "attitude issues." And he may have them with every coaching staff -- who knows?

From what I read on the Falcons blogs, he had "work ethic" issues. He sounded like the Brandon Lloyd of the Falcons defense.

But he has enough talent that some team's going to pick him up and give him a second look. Hopefully in a different environment he will have a different attitude.

I guess I'm surprised that the Falcons couldn't trade him to someone for a conditional seventh round pick. I'm betting that he doesn't clear waivers -- he'll be claimed, and maybe by the Redskins. There's no risk in claiming him off wiavers.
