Unrestricted Preview of Skins-Cards

Jason Reid previews Cards-Skins Sunday...also, take a look at Jason's story on Jason Campbell's maturation this morning. Liz Clarke caught up with Joe Gibbs yesterday and, not surprisingly, the prime topic of conversation turned out to be the Redskins.

If you're attending the game in person, the forecast is for gorgeous weather. You can get updates via mobile phone by texting "REDSKINS" to WPOST (97678) and follow along on Twitter (RedskinsInsider).

Does anyone want to tune into Cerato for College football talk?

Brown,

I do not think a NFL GM has regular buisness hours, 24/7 job I am sure we will not miss the next FA because of this.

I am not saying that to you Brown, just commenting on the PFT article.

Posted by: Flounder | September 19, 2008 10:29 AM

I think you can make deals and what not at any time, they just can't make any signing or trade official unless it's done during business hours. You know, the paperwork and so forth. I think that's what they're getting at.

I love the guys at PFT, but I would take the word of a couple of GMs over Florio in this regard. At a minimum, Vinny is creating (or furthering) the perception that he's screwing around when he could be working to get this team in position to get a championship.

I'm listening to Vinny Cerrato streaming live now. Apparently, in addition to having sufficient free time to do a radio show, he apparently has plenty of time to watch college games.

Posted by: dcsween | September 19, 2008 10:39 AM | Report abuse

My true issue with the Vinnie thing is that it further blurs the line between football and Danny ventures worldwide. I mean it just further pushes the belief that Vinny is just Danny's puppet. That affects his relationship with other GM's, PLayers, Coaches etc.

Once a proud franchise, now a lesson in moppishness...

Posted by: Skinz | September 19, 2008 10:39 AM | Report abuse

brown,

Vinny has a big staff that can do most of that stuff for him, and seeing as how they have commercials every 10 minutes he will have plenty of time to sign off on something during the show.

Posted by: Flounder | September 19, 2008 10:39 AM | Report abuse

Vinny's laugh would make a good sound effect for a Hallmark Halloween Card.

dcsween,

I thought NFL GM's were supposed to know what is going on in college football, and most of that was probably written for him.

Interesting chat btwn Vinny and Mel Kiper. Presumably they had a prior agreement not to make fun of each other's eyes and hair, respectively.

****Quick fantasy advice question. This is not for the RI League (the first and preferred one.)

Have Randy Moss, been offered Willie Parker. Do you do the deal?

Sween - He's scouting on Saturdays when all the team is doing is a walk through or traveling.

He's making good use of his time. Going to area college games.....

Posted by: 4th | September 19, 2008 10:44 AM | Report abuse

Flounder, I figured as much ... just trying to snark it up here. I know there is a staff of college scouts ... figure he probably gets highlights of what they want him to watch ... or maybe, giving that he is a master at multi-tasking between commercial breaks, he does watch whole games ... or maybe, he gets a special feed of the college feed equivalent of the NFL game day ticket ... and his eye speed is such that he can watch the entirety of every college FB game simultaneously.

I kid, I kid. I kid because I ... well, its Friday morning, I don't have meetings or calls on my calendar all day, and I come up here to goof.

you guys always get mad when we jump to sign FA's instead of playing younger guys, now they are doing it and it is wrong.

Posted by: Flounder | September 19, 2008 10:33 AM

Considering one of them is injured and questionable to play, that only leaves 3 WRs. Even if he plays, 4 WRs is not enough. At the very least Vinny should be scouring the waiver wires, looking at practice squads, inquiring about disgruntled WRs, anything and everything that could possibly help the team. This radio show does nothing to help the team. That's all I care about.

Smack who are your WR's other than Moss? Also does you flex position allow for RBs? If not, then I wouldn't make the trade although Randy Moss will be no where near the WR he was last year with Brady in there.

They have Sonny on.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 19, 2008 10:48 AM | Report abuse

I will go easy on Vinny's show after (1) there is a serious, pressing crisis (like when Daniels busted his knee) and (2) Vinny "steps away" from the show for a moment to do something like "just watch practice" (which I think was the official story about what he was doing when they were negotiating for Jason Taylor).

So no need to rush out and get a WR.

Posted by: Flounder | September 19, 2008 10:50 AM

I'm sorry, but that is completely incorrect. No doubt Polian has scouts, but I guarantee he personally analyzes each and every possible move that is made. Which is why his time is so much more valuable. Each scout spends his or her time gathering info on a number of players, then dump it all on Polian (or any GM). Multiply that by the number of scouts he has, and you see where these guys spend their 20 hours a day.

The fact that anybody is defending this ridiculous activity is beyond me.

The fact that you do not realize, that even if what you say is true. Vinny still has 10 hours in his day today to go over all that stuff, he does not work and 8 hour shift.

Unless you have been a GM in the league which I am sure you have'nt you pretty much have no idea of what there day consit of.

Posted by: Flounder | September 19, 2008 11:00 AM | Report abuse

I imagine that most GM's go to the scouts with a list of the college players and say, I want a report on all these dudes, the scouts then watch every game they can and say, here are those dudes, and here are some dudes who were not on the radar.

Posted by: Alex35332 | September 19, 2008 11:02 AM | Report abuse

Again, I love Sonny. Sonny's key to the game (the mirror image of dcsween's key to the game*) is that whichever line protects their QB better.

I don't know about the mismatches at individual positions, but these two teams look fairly evenly matched at the team level ... which means the punting and punt return games could decide the game.

The Yahoo.com line favors the Skins by 3 (which means, given that its at home, its a push). Over/under is 42.

* Which line collapses the pocket faster.

As for me....I am in now way a proponent of many of the decisions that have been made by this front office over the years. However, I feel that every decision that has been made has been made with with what they thought were in the best interests of the football team. My hope is that more competent decisions will be made in the future. I also believe that this front office is going nowhere anytime soon, and know that if I am going to keep any snaity whatsoever, I have to have some faith that they are going to get things turned around. If I had no hope, which appears to be the prevailing belief among most on this blog, then I would either have to quit watching football or choose another team to follow. Merciless bashing against your own team with the belief that things will never change is productive in no way.

Really? I've probably been the staunchest defender of Jason Campbell on this blog.

I also defended Santana Moss as big-time WR when everybody jumped on the "big" WR bandwagon, saying Moss couldn't get it done.

I was also a staunch defender of Gibbs when he was under scrutiny.

I also gave Zorn deep praise for his massive improvement from week 1 to week 2.

Sorry I don't placate to Snyder and Cerrato like they're NFl masterminds and perform every detail of their work to perfection. I don't know if you actually realize this, but there ARE situations in which Snyder, Cerrato, this organization, and this team deserve criticism.

Posted by: psps23 | September 19, 2008 11:15 AM | Report abuse

Smack - Do you earn bonus points if Parker gets 100 yards? If not, I'd keep Moss since Parker rarely gets into the endzone (albeit Week 1) but he has a good shot at 100 yards each week.

In the grand scheme of life, Vinny's show is not that big of a deal and it may even prove to be entertaining and insightful. But in the Redskins' world Vinny & Dan are the powers that be and, right or wrong, they are the ones who get the blame when things don't go well. There have been some good personnel decisions and some bad ones during their tenure. But they like the big splash that gets attention and when those moves go bad, they REALLY go bad & a bitter taste is left with the diehard fan. So when the opportunity to strike back at Vinny arises, the rancid bile within causes hate to spew forth beyond what might be a rational response to whatever Vinny is actually doing.

It's the TMZ faction of DC football. There's no such thing as bad publicity. With all this ranting and raving about how bad an idea this will be from JLaC and the SportsReporters and Florio of PFT; how many people you think are listening in?

Alot.
