Updates on Haynesworth, Rogers

Coach Jim Zorn said defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth isn't over the stomach problems that caused him to miss practice Monday, and he is unlikely to play in Thursday's preseason finale in Jacksonville.

"He's still sick," Zorn said after Monday's practice. "He came in today, and he just didn't feel very good, so we just sent him back home. . . . It'll be unlikely that he plays on Thursday. I want to get him some practice time and stuff, and he wouldn't play much anyways, so a series is not going to help us with him."

Haynesworth, who has not played all 16 games in a regular season since his rookie year of 2002, has played in two of three preseason games to this point.

But of more concern to Zorn, it seems, is cornerback Carlos Rogers, who has missed significant time this preseason with a lingering calf problem. Though Rogers is "feeling a lot better," Zorn said, "I am just a little nervous about putting him out there right now."

The issue gives Zorn pause beyond Thursday, too. Even if Rogers, who played only one preseason game, is back on the practice field next week, Zorn believes the nagging nature of the injury is affecting Rogers's ability to be prepared for the season.

"I think it's very concerning, because I think Carlos must have reps," Zorn said. "So as we bring him back . . . I'm hoping that he'll be just lights out, but I can't imagine that. We've got to get him back in. Hopefully we'll have a whole practice week for him that he can get up a comfort level, and then he's got to go play. I mean, his preseason is gone. He's got to get up to speed as quick as he can. There could be some growing pains there as he goes along. If you ask him the same question, he'd say, 'Ah, no problem.' But I think it does take some time."

Rogers's situation has meant more playing time for veteran Fred Smoot, who is expected to be the nickel back, as a starter, as well as for second-year man Justin Tryon.

"Smoot's done a wonderful job," Zorn said. "He's taken every advantage of the reps he's gotten to get himself better, to play within the No. 1 group. That's a big deal. Smoot, he has fun doing it, but he's serious about his play as well."

Also, offensive lineman Jeremy Bridges missed practice for a personal reason, a team spokesman said. Starting guard Randy Thomas's calf "flared up," Zorn said, and the team held him out of practice, though the issue is not considered serious. Guard Reuben Riley had a biceps tendon problem, but Zorn said he should be able to practice Tuesday. Safety Kareem Moore's hamstring is "coming along, but we want to bring that along slowly," Zorn said.

Zorn and special teams coach Danny Smith also held a kicking competition Monday, with both Dave Rayner and incumbent Shaun Suisham showing well. Both hit their last two kicks, from 47 and 52 yards.

"I thought it was interesting," Zorn said. "The rhythm and the timing, there are some things that will show up. I think they're competing hard. Again, we hope that they get some kicks in the game so we can see more and more and just continue to wait. It'll be a last-minute decision as we along here, because it's not clear."

It is officially mandatory that the phrase, "who has not played all 16 games in a regular season since his rookie year of 2002" be inserted after the name Haynesworth in any and all media publications.

Paging Chip Lohmiller!

Haynesworth is sick because he swallowed one of the Golden Boy's fingers. If he plays +12, the 'Skins signing was a success.

As expected "experts". They are going to be very, very, so very sorry they let Springs go. What a bunch of fools frequent this site ... giving "the Mayor" a hard time about Betts? Knowing what the last 8-9 games of Portis looked like last year? Miserable. Only 2 touch downs, a 3.2 yards per carry. I pity the fools here there are so many.

Game plan on kickers ... every 4th down past the Skins 45 is a FG attempt until each guy gets 3 tries. Actually making the distance doesn't matter, but results will be measured on film, including estimated right/left veer.

Plan B: Make the kickers punt too.

Plan C: Roster spot determined by hotness of wives (I want Suisham back and this is my finger on the scale ... his wife is smokin' hot).

This just in regarding the 'Ginas....

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora missed a practice and coach Tom Coughlin said he didn't know why.

Umenyiora attended team meetings on Monday morning at the Giants headquarters. However, he left unexpectedly, didn't talk to Coughlin before leaving and didn't return for practice.

A league source confirmed a Newark Star-Ledger report to ESPN.com's Matt Mosley that Umenyiora skipped practice after getting into a dispute with new defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan. Sheridan, the former linebackers coach who replaced Steve Spagnuolo as coordinator, reportedly criticized Umenyiora for making a mistake in Saturday's game against the Jets.

General manager Jerry Reese sent a text message to Umenyiora to ask him if he was all right. The two-time Pro Bowler said he was OK, but didn't explain why he left.

The absence will be considered unexcused, so Umenyiora likely will be fined.

There is nothing wrong with writing: Betts's

In fact, adding 's to a noun ending in "s" is the traditional way to do it (though not required). You can write it either way in English.
1. Don't hate on Reid
2. Please focus on football (especially when incorrectly correcting people)

Marcus Mason should not be on the roster if we have Betts (and we will). He doesn't provide anything different (except worse pass pro). Alridge is the best option as a 3rd RB (w/ Cartwright at RB4 for special teams)

I'm glad Zorn is leaning toward starting Smoot @ NYG. Rogers will get exposed if he starts that game.

Landry missed the entire preseason last year and played terribly against the Giants. He got trucked by Jacobs on a long run and was late helping out on Plaxico's TD.

Smoot should be starting anyways. He can catch, tackle and probably has the most heart of any DB on this roster.

Our season will be crap cause we don't have Leigh Torrence.

Fire Zorn wants Marty Back. Does that mean we have to take Tony Banks with him?

The Redskins have decided to forgo having any kicker this season. Instead Zorn has elected to have a member of the Hogs Fan Club kick Cerrato through the goal posts. Yes, the NFL Commissioner has allowed a "do-over" if Cerrato travels at least 20 yards without spending a first round draft choice and $100 million on a soft landing.

Jim Zorn will let his hair grow all season and hopes to look like Mrs Doubtfire by the Super Bowl.

Jason Campbell is thankful that Michael Vick isn't interrupting his continuity the way it is with Donovan McNubb and his ego.

Daniel Snyder has confirmed that he will have an even bigger and more expensive video screen over Fed Ex Field than the one at the Dome of Death in Arlington Texas. Snyder will pay for a helicopter rental to support the screen (which will show his image between plays) and the scoreboard will be 90 feet 1 inch off the playing surface.

Marcus Mason has been offered a special teams job holding athletic supporters to prepare him for more demanding special teams work later in the year. He will also go one on one with Albert Haynesworth to prepare him for blocking blitzing buffet consumers.

Seriously, from PFT:

It didn't take long to find out why Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora went AWOL from the Giants facility Monday. (And no, AWOL according to Tom Coughlin didn't mean not five minutes early, as one commenter suggested. But good job.)

It turns out Umenyiora left the team because of a disagreement with defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan that occured Monday morning. Umenyiora was criticized for a play he made in New York's preseason game Saturday, and he believed Sheridan was "contradicting" a previous statement.

I actually thought Dorsey did a better job/ was more impressive than Aldridge (game 2 vs game 3). Dorsey could do the PR and be the scat back / change of pace.

Don't want to see Cartwright go. Been a beast on KR but that's about it... I'd be surprised if he's on the roster next week. Or maybe I should say I wouldn't be surprised if he weren't....

I saw the post. You included the season that Rogers was out nine games with an injury. He came back last year from the blown-out knee to play 16 games. So what does "pulling a Rogers" mean? 16 games like last year or a blown out knee like the year before?

Does Dorsey have that kind of speed? You can't coach that...(not once you're old enough to be a pro football player, anywho).

We need more offensive players that the D must respect.

From JLC's NFL.com chat:

Mr. Caring, Heartland 02:02 PM ET
What was your favourite team growing up?

Jason La Canfora, NFL Network
The Baltimore Colts, and then with their demise and subsequent move, I became a huge Chargers fan. "Air Coryell" baby. Good stuff.
--------------------------

The Colts moved after the 1983 season, and Don Coryell was gone from the Chargers halfway through the 1986 season.

So what did he do after that?

Answer: He learned to hate the Redskins from 1986 until the Ravens started up in 1996.

I'd like to see a kid like A Dixon, 6' 4" 325 lbs. on the roster.

But without coaches' tape, it's hard to see how he compares to Wynn.

He's got good pedigree coming from the 'U'.

So far, we've stated we wanted to add Dixon, Daniels, and Mitchell to the roster.

I gotta say, this is the first time in a while where I'm thinking the Skins will be needing to let go of guys that can play in this league.

Guys like Hackett may not be great players -- guys that fall off the end of the roster usually aren't -- but he averages out to 3+ TDs and 500 yards for every 16 games played during his career. That's better than a lot of #3 WRs had last year -- including ours.

I suspect the loser(s) in the Betts, Rock, Mason, Alridge competition will also find another home, and some PT. Someone will want our surplus DL as well.

Posted by: zcezcest1 | August 31, 2009 9:21 PM | Report abuse

The problem ZZ is that there are a lot of free agent RB's and WR's out there.

Not seeing it as a problem scamp ... just saying I think our talent level is higher than its been in a while. Part of that issue is we're very deep in certain areas (DL) and not deep in others (OL). But I don't think too many of our cuts landed jobs with other teams last year ... it'll be different this year I suspect.

Wynn got man handled by Oher in the Ravens game and he just doesn't have the versatility or ceiling some younger guys have. I like the guy a lot, he's a leader in the locker room, a good influence on younger guys, could have been our player rep for the Union, but it's a numbers game. Just my opinion of course.

This doesn't seem likely. Rock was a free agent last year and no one wanted him but the 'Skins. Mason has been on three rosters and no one has wanted to keep him. Betts or Alridge could attract some interest, but there are a lot of younger guys than Betts and more experienced than Alridge.

I posted about a week and a half ago that Rogers should be kept out of the starting lineup against the Giants, with him playing as the nickel and Smoot as the starter. It has nothing to do with Rogers' ability as a corner, but his sharpness in stepping on the field following an injury. Smoot is good enough to hold the fort until Rogers gets his timing, rhythm, and fitness back. The last thing they want with Rogers is another setback.

Dear dline182:

Your "dline" had better learn to play defensive back because without Shawn Springs and with a "reluctant" Carlos Rogers and De Angelo Hall they are going to have to learn to drop back into coverage because there's no one home back there but Mista Moe's ghosts. And they ain't stopping those wide receivers.

Lezzz see what have we learned?

The Skins have a good to great starting quarterback. Three reasonable backups. In spite Danny and Vinny's worries ... a whole passel of wide receivers and good tight ends.

However, they have no offensive line, and are probably very questionable at the running back position ... unless Betts steps up again.

D-line out the wing-wang. But too many linebackers in training ... and not one cornerback who can cover top NFL receivers.

Kickers? Maybe. Special teams? Who knows?
