Vinny Cerrato: Dan Snyder's New Radio Jock

Vinny Cerrato is coming soon to the airwaves. Four hours a week. Live on the radio from the newly-constructed studios at Redskins Park. How pumped are you?

The Redskins Executive Vice President is now a midmorning radio host. Amid being in charge of virtually everything connected to the football side of the Redskins, the man is owner Daniel Snyder's new jock. ESPN 980, owned by Snyder, will announce today that "Inside The Red Zone With Vinny Cerrato" is now a staple of its lineup, according to sources with knowledge of the information.

The staff at 980 was notified of the new show Wednesday and the debut broadcast will be Friday. The show will run from 10-noon on Mondays and Fridays through the football season, according to sources. Longtime Snyder pal George Michael will host at the onset, and a permanent host is TBA (who could be more singularly, um, "qualified" to host such a show than Larry Michael? Wouldn't that seem like the biggest no-brainer ever?). Vinny will take calls and have guests on the show.

(Sample first question: Jasno from the Schlub Room here, Vinny. First time caller, long-time, um, questioner. I've got a two-parter here, so hang with me. "How do you manage to have time to do this while running a long-suffering franchise? And with a personal record 12 games below .500 as a member of this organization, and as a highly compensated employee of the Redskins, do you think the fanbase might feel better served by you doing actual football operations work from 10-12, rather than killing time between "Mike and Mike In the Morning" and Doc Walker's show?")

Even though Cerrato is in charge of all things Redskin, what would be a 24-7/365 job anywhere else in the NFL, he now can take on a part-time job, in season. And, from what I hear, Snyder actually envisioned the show being five days a week, with the format of twice a week finally settled on a few days ago.

And the show will run Mondays, which is the busiest personnel day of the week, with tape to be broken down of your own team, film to be looked at of other players, lists to be compiled of free agents to bring in. It's when you fill voids from injury or ineffectiveness, dissect the roster, check in around the league.

In general, when a lot of other GMs and personnel guys are breaking down film of free agents, and opposing players in the afternoon, trying to find any way to upgrade the roster, Cerrato personally attends every Redskins practice, usually right by Snyder's side. So between those 2 ½ hours per day on the practice field, and then another 4 hours a week on the radio ... let's just say that's a big chunk of time. I'm not sure how many of you guys could function at your primary jobs while cutting out prime hours like this twice a week to moonlight on the radio. Seems like it would be tough.

Sure, Cerrato has a staff around him, but trust me, this is pretty unprecedented. I've covered every pro sports league to some degree and been around this business a long time, and I'd be stunned to find another executive with this type of position who can waste four hours of prime business hours per week - in season no less - yapping on the radio. What if an agent is trying to reach him? What if a GM has a trade offer? What if there is an emergency of some sort?

"I've never heard of anything like that before, and I've been in this business a long time," one NFL executive said after being convinced that this was in fact not a gag. "I can't imagine anyone else in the NFL doing this. How can you justify spending your time like that? What am I doing still in the office breaking down film (it was 9 pm at the time)?

"And you're telling me this is gonna be every Monday? The morning after a game? They wonder why people point the finger at them over there, then they keep doing stuff that opens them up to criticism. I can't believe this one."

Cerrato is a media-junkie. He is in regular contact with people at ESPN, he worked at ESPN when Snyder fired him in 2001, and, while rarely meeting the actual media in any press conference-type setting, he is a staple in front of Redskins microphones, whether on Larry Michael's daily show on Comcast, or on Snyder's radio shows, or what have you. Clearly, he enjoys this kind of stuff. Maybe it will be a ratings bonanza.

( PS 1 - It will also be interesting to see the on-air reactions, if any, to this new show by other 980 talent. I know several people over there are upset, and feel that they have been misled. When Snyder bought 980 everyone was told how this would be an independent entity from the Redskins, not under his control (Snyder went on about this in his Wall Street Journal interview) and that there would be no controlling the message. It's not like there were a legion of reporters, hosts and producers there clamoring for a Vinny Cerrato show, but, ultimately, they are at the mercy of the man who pays the bills. And no way Snyder's top football man pulls off something like this without the owner being fully behind it.)

(PS 2 - For you diehard radio types, Colin Cowherd's show will air in Vinny's timeslot on Tues-Thurs).

The way to become a big time media celebrity is NOT to get a radio show. That's sooooo Old Media. The way to become popular is to get a blog, a camera, and a Skins playbook ... plus some sort of turtleneck ... followed quickly by an apology ... about the playbook.

And who might the 'nfl executive' be Mr JLC? Keep making up sources, it'll eventually catch up to you. You're the biggest fraud on this side the of the Mississippi.

This is beyond laughable. Cerrato is such a waste of life it is unbelievable.

Who knows, maybe the time away from the office will give him a chance to grow a brain. Nah, prolly not.

Posted by: Zack | September 17, 2008 10:12 PM | Report abuse

How can you possibly not expect a reaction like that? This is absolutely crazy. Can you imagine the Colts' or Pats' GMs doing that? There is SO MUCH to do as a GM in any sport nowadays. Basically, the person doing it should never sleep, give up all family life, fun time, etc., if I had my druthers. Instead, the person is choosing to spend like 4 hours shmoozing on the radio with propaganda BS? Absolutely absurd!

JLac, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Cerrato sound like he's mentally challenged in front of the press and stuff? I can't imagine them just putting a mic in front of him and telling him to run his own radio show. He has trouble putting coherent sentences together and seems like he has an IQ of about 5.

Well, just to throw out another side of this - (I know, it's an outrageously stupid idea!) - In Houston, what's his name - Charlie Casserly - used to do an hour a week with one of the local radio shows.

More and more, with people focusing on every little facet of their favorite NFL team, the media turns these guys into stars - it used to be that we all KNEW who Bobby Beatherd was, but he was never really mentioned too much.

So, this is just part of the evolution - next stop - "Fine H20 with the 'Skins Waterboy"

But really - this is a dumb idea.

I'm shocked. Why is it every time this franchise takes one step forward, it has to go do something stupid to stumble backwards two steps. I mean really, a radio show... for a GM? The only time GM's come on the radio in Buffalo is to announce a trade or contract extension. Otherwise, they do exactly as JLC described and watch a crapload of film. Same thing when I lived in Tampa, and the good old days in DC.

I love my team but crap like this just depresses me. The Skins are taking years off my life....

actually, you are right. This is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. The only benefits I see in this are:

1) Less Colin Cowherd (as someone mentioned)

2) More public accountability for the FO, especially if he's taking calls from fans.

3) Less time that Vinny spends actually running the team - that IS a good thing, right?

I like some of Jasno's reporting, and I get his points lots of the time. I certainly am no defender of Vinny "The Raquet Ball" Cerrato.

But Jasno's got more venom on this blog than a spitting Cobra sprayed on the recently departed Steve Irwin's Sunglasses (RIP Croc-Hunter).

You hate Vinny and Dan...to paraphrase Shaggy...like we get it dude!

If you are going to go off on Vinny, then do a reasonable comparison to Gibbs doing "coaches corner" the first few seasons with the Skins, with George Michael and others including TV time and prep time, you know that gig took more than four hours a week..DURING THE SEASON.

This radio thing is not unprecedented. The NFL is sports entertainment. Vinny has a little bit of Marketeer in him, and Danny has a lot of it, its what made him the millions along with some luck and timing. Danny and Vinny want to frame certain aspects of their sports entertainment franchise. AM980 reaches some of the diehards they want to target at work or in the car, big deal.

While you lambast him for following orders, spend some blog time crediting him with getting the NFC Defensive player of the week in the late rounds Bro. It's called balanced reporting and your readers will respect you for it.

Ga-head and ask your NFL exec. why he passed on Horton.

WOW.....

1. If he says nothing and its all biased spin it boring radio at best.

2. If he is forthcoming and insightful than opposing teams will study every word for advantage.

3. You thought the message was crafted before? Now we have the skins version of Tokyo Rose.

4. Why is it always about Vinny and Danny...who cares...melt into the background...feature the players, prove people wrong on the field not the end zone not the spin zone!!!!!!! Its like ego on HGH..

5. This means less time grooming quality local broadcasters who give diverse opinions...which in general from sports to politics is a good thing.

WOW....dumb...dumb...dumb...

Each of the 980 guys spent their time pontificating about what a stand-up analyst Brian Mitchell is and casting a disapproving eye at Portis's inexplicable outburst. Whatever. They should just call it like it is: "B-Mitch is my boy and I have his back".

From a Wa=PO story in 2006 ---One might "Argue" Gibbs time more valuable than Cerrato's, but he made time for TV and Radio without much fanfare from Jasno.

"The Redskins have a stake in programs airing on three of Washington's four leading network affiliates, including WUSA, WRC (Channel 4) and WTTG (Channel 5). Channel 4 carries "Redskins Game Plan" and Channel 5 broadcasts the similar "Redskins Game Day." Channel 9 has two shows, "Redskins Generation," which is geared toward children, and "Redskins Late Night," a team-themed entertainment show.

**** WRC also broadcasts "The Joe Gibbs Show," a weekly interview program that is owned by the team, which splits advertising revenues with WRC.

The Redskins tried to place a show on WJLA, Channel 7, this season, too, but the station declined, saying the financial terms were inadequate, said Fred Ryan, president of WJLA's parent company, Allbritton Communications.

On radio, WJFK-FM, the Redskins' flagship station for the past five seasons, has aired a Monday night program hosted by Larry Michael, the team's play-by-play announcer. Michael is a vice president of the team, and also is host of "Redskins Generation." **** Sports-talk radio station WTEM-AM broadcasts another weekly interview program with Gibbs under a deal with the club. ****

Soon, the Redskins might be able to cut out some of the middlemen. Snyder is nearing a deal to buy three small radio stations in the Washington area that would carry the team's games and related programs. His new venture, Red Zebra Broadcasting, also is interested in acquiring TV stations.

The Redskins-owned programs often feature familiar local reporters who cover the team as journalists. George Michael, Channel 4's veteran sports director and perhaps the area's best-known sportscaster, is intimately involved in the Redskins' paid programming efforts. Michael (no relation to Larry Michael) serves as executive producer of "Redskins Game Plan" and sometimes appears on the show. He also hosts "The Joe Gibbs Show" for the station (another Michael-hosted show on Channel 4, "Redskins Report," is independent of the team, he said).

As a kick returner, BMitch was one of my favorite Skins. As a media personality, BMitch is a "hater" - i.e. makes his mark as a loudmouth negative blowhard. JLaC,
I can't stand the idea of Vinny doing radio, because I will take Brian Mitchell, Riggo and Doc over him anytime anywhere, BECAUSE they PLAYED the GAME - what better insight to a players thought process to the game, the prep time before this week's game, like mentality to going to Dallas as an example, coming off the plane in CAMO gear!
Snyder, yes, you have the money to buy your favorite team, BUT, inspite of you, the Skins fan remembers and are diehards way, I mean way before you....and honestly, we can not wait till you move onward....you make us look like a JOKE, you buy someone (way past their prime) then thrust 'em in here like a SAVOR (Deion, B. Smith to name a few) - and I hate those moves you made BECAUSE you single handed weakened our team not just for a few season but FOR YEARS!

Just STOP what you are doing before there is nothing more to do BUT Lose the $ value of the Redskins, because you might know money, BUT you don't know football, and I know for sure you weren't talking about Skins football at recess in grade school, becasue you were too busy getting your tongue unstuck from the Flag Pole outside the 3rd grade classroom and pulling out your underwear because you made some stupid comment about the Skins game that was soooo offbase, the kids just had enough!...(like the diehards of today) - JUST STOP before it all blows up, leave the team alone to repair all the damage you have done!

Much like Silky Johnson who pointed out that Bucknasty's suit was as bombed out and depleted like Afghanistan - he didn't make it up, he just found a negative spin.

One does not have to "make things up" to be a hater. One only has to find the negative spin on everything - that is what BMitch excels at.

It's late on the east coast as I read this. When I started reading "the man is owner Daniel Snyder's new jock...," I thought the next word would be "sniffer." But then, my tired brain said, Vinny wouldn't be a "new" one. And then it said, "Snyder's never been any kind of jock--HE was the jock sniffer." Then my brain said, "Go to bed, it's been a long day."

Good night.

Snyder = Caligula

Vinny = his horse, Incitatus, whom Caligula made a Senator.

OTOH, if it gets Colin Cowherd off the air two days a week, it's not all bad. (Now if they could also cut local odd blowhard Bird from his strange guest spots on 980, all the better.)

I disagree with the move. Vinny should be spending his time managing the Redskins, not playing PR guy.

Then again, JLC, if Vinny is a disaster (as you think he is), wouldn't this move bode well for the team? Frankly, you are beginning to sound like a guy with a vendetta who has a PERSONAL beef with Vinny and Danny, as opposed to a journalist with some personal opinions. It's kind of sad how petty you act sometimes. You talk about Danny being a sad, petty guy when you two are two sides of the same coin.

Snyder = Jimmy Dolan
Vinny = Isiah Thomas

I know some of you love to kill JLa for saying anything bad about the front office, but really, why would anyone defend them?

Ask any Knicks fan and they saw the demise of the franchise at least 5 years before the ownership finally dealt with Isiah... It was the inevitable consequence of the trades and free agent signings, which were themselves born out of an inane self-denial over the quality of the roster. Always thinking they were one player away, they kept taking on bloated contracts to upgrade talent, without regard to how the players would fit together.

The NFL isn't as punishing as the NBA since contracts aren't guaranteed and it's easier to change the roster. But the front office decisions will continue to have long-term consequences. The Skins are good but they aren't close to superbowl caliber. They did a good job getting younger this offseason -- a major and positive change from the past. But they've got more to do, and it's going to take a couple more years if they can keep making smart decisions. Or it could take forever...

+++Time to throw those rookie WR in and let them learn to sink or swim. No more of this they only know certain things. Or run the wrong routes.

If that is true, then maybe the coaches are not doing their part.

Thrash, Moss, Randle El and Moss learned what to do. And showed up in shape.

Ummm...No, according to Zorn this is not true. Sounds like Moss is the only one to get the offense, so group ARE, Thrash, Thomas and Kelly in group #2, the don't get the offense group.

-----------
orn said Moss was the first receiver to have such a dominant game because he was the first receiver to truly grasp the scheme. The coach said that when receivers are comfortable, they play faster, are able to create more space, and do not over-think their position.

"That's what's happening with Santana," Zorn said. "He's the first guy in our group that all of a sudden you can see a burst. You can see in, out, catch, run. Things kind of rolled for him this week, not as a fluke, but just as an, 'Ah, I get it.' He could start running patterns with greater confidence."

It's surprising to see a reporter complaining that the team -- in the person of the General Manager, no less -- is now giving more information. Most reporters complain about too little information, not too much.

What piszes Jasno off the most about this is he has to listen to Vinnie's show. Jasno has few sources at Redskins Park, and "Open Mic With Vinnie" will be one of his only "insider" insights into what's going on with the team. He's going to have to get his wife and kids to phone in questions, because Vinnie's not going to talk to him.

As for how Vinnie can do his day job plus his radio gig, well duh. Each hour of radio is about half an hour of commercials (sort of like those creepy Redskins Unvarnished videos up here with more commercial than information). Vinnie can trade for Boldin during a commercial and still lie about it after the break when he takes the question from Jasno's daughter.

JLC,

You are a idiot, what if a agent is trying to reach him, I am sure he has no one else working for him, also they do like 20 minutes of commericilas every hour on 980.

I am sure this will bring the Redskins down, because Vinny is doing a radio show, not everyone works as little as you JLC, I am sure Vinny does not have to do as much house work as you.

JLC I am sure all buisness for the Skins takes place from 10:00 to 12:00, there is no other time in the day that he can do anything.

I have no problem with people hating on this because, Vinny will have a positive spin all the time, but hopefully he will take calls from fans and we can ask him some hard questions.

The studios are in Redskins park I am sure if there is an emergency they can break in and get Vinny.

JLC your hating is funny I hear the Baltimore Sun wants to start a blog about the Ravens see yah.

Posted by: Flounder | September 18, 2008 6:35 AM | Report abuse

At first glance this looks a little ridiculous. However Vinny C. has a staff together. I think Jasno reported that Scott Campbell is the director of personnel not Vinny. I would think that Scott and his team breaks down all the players and does the evaluation. Let's be real, 4 hours is 1/10 of the average work week. How much % of time do you think this show will take away from Vinny's job. Me thinks it not such a big deal.

Posted by: MJ | September 18, 2008 6:40 AM | Report abuse

Also,

I listen to 980 all day and since Snyder took over there is actually more Redskin bashing then there used to be. The two morons in the morning and Collin Cowpie, always hate on the Skins, plus they do not even work for Snyder. He has not censored the local guys in anyway.

Will Vinny be good on the radio probably not, will there be to much love for the Skins probably, but atleast it will be four hours a week we here nothing but Skins and Cowpie is off the air.

Posted by: Flounder | September 18, 2008 6:46 AM | Report abuse

MJ,

Agree on your points what NFL GM works a 40 hour work week none, they are available 24/7 plus do you really think Vinny is in there breaking down game film that is what you staff is for.

JLC is just an idiot and a hater just because he works like 30 hours a week, and 4 hours would be alot for him, he thinks everyone falls in that category.

As many know I listen to EITM religiously. Vinny was a guest during the season for two seasons a couple of years ago when he was head scout?? or whatever his previous position was.

They would talk on Fridays and Vinny was asked about upcoming teams, and he would give high level stuff that you or I would know as casual fans like;

- Well, the chargers have LT. He is a great player. We have to shut him down....

And he would always say he was going to an SEC college game to 'scout' players.

His voice is quite annoying, to me at least, always sounds like he has a hocker in there.

I am sure there will be a call screener who will not allow the 'haters' to get through.

I guess we could argue about it back and forth, but we really dont know what it will produce. And if our team starts playing well, the haters will say it is b/c vinny has less to do with the team and the 'lovers' will say that the radio show isnt affecting his performance.

Either way, if we keep winning I could care less.

Snyder figures the fans are too stupid (and judging from extremeskins.com most are) to figure out what he's doing. He knows they are unthinking lemmings who will flock to FedEx regardless of the cost of admission, parking fees, extortionate concession prices and vulgar, drunken thugs whose behavior makes FedEx seem more like a prison exercise yard than a sports stadium.

apparently JLC, his source, and some of the other people in this comments section don't know. I don't know who the bigger idiot is. its either you, JLC or his source. JLC didnt write this because he thought we'd care about cerrato getting a small radio gig(which is why he should of wrote it), but no, he wrote it because he saw it as an opportunity to trash cerrato and the redskins. seriously this a**hole needs to go cover hockey or soccer which are his lovefests anyways

Further evidence that Snyderatto is more interested in obfuscation, spinning and prevarication than putting a quality product on the field.

Posted by: Bill | September 18, 2008 8:21 AM

Bill,

Do you actually listen to 980? How often do you go to Fed Ex? Snyder is at fault because fans get drunk and rude?

980 bashes the Skins all day if Snyder wanted to sway the message he could change that.

If you do not like the Fed Ex experience do not go that is called a choice.

The fans are no different at Fed Ex then most stadiums around the league, ever been to Philly.

That was not his point, his point was JLC does not do any research and just throws his hate out. How hard would it have been to find out if another GM had a show.

This in no way effects what Vinny does it will not help him be a better GM or make him any worse, but atleast it will get Cowpie off the air 4 hours a week and that is priceless.

LaCantReporta is at it again!!

The most jealous man in all of journalism, JLC. You've toiled as a beat reporter for the Skins while 3 of your peers have all gotten national and much higher paying jobs. Hell, even when Vinny was fired he got hired by ESPN to write for the website while you stay here talking about milkshakes, burgers and every lucky to be here player on the team because they are the only ones who will talk to a tool like you. Oh, by the way, Ton Cruise jumped on Oprah's couch 3 years ago. Time to get over that!

Just for your information Mr. LaCantreporta, while unprecedented having a 4 hour radio show, it's not ridiculous in the day to day lives of most GM's. Vinnie puts in very long hours at Redskin Park unlike you who is the first "Schlub" out of the building consistently says my sources at Redskin Park.

You kill this team for not having any public relations with the fans and for keeping to many things to themselves so they try to put themselves out there and be more accessible for the fans and to put themselves out there and you kill them. It must be nice to be someone whose never been ultimately responsible for anything in their careers other than being a beat reporter for a sports team. Oh, and make sure you tell Steinberg to stop posting most read writers on the paper, because for you to be 3rd in DC during football season while you've been here for 4 years and should have an established following is ridiculous. You're own paper should be closely monitoring this because the people of DC just flat out don't care to read you.

You're act is old little man!

Time to throw those rookie WR in and let them learn to sink or swim. No more of this they only know certain things. Or run the wrong routes.

If that is true, then maybe the coaches are not doing their part.

Again, why would you simply throw 2 guys into a game that aren't comfortable in the offense to see if they can figure it out when they are 1-1 and with a reasonable schedule has a chance at the playoffs.

BREAKING NEWS! BREAKING NEWS!

Jason LaCanfora, Washington Post Sportswriter, was just seen eating his 6th donut of the morning at Redskins Park. LaCanfora, an adult male who nonetheless wears sports jerseys as his main fashion statement, could not be reached for comment but sources at Redskin Park state that the 5th donut officially put Mr. LaCanfora over the Morbidly Obese levels as outlined by the US Dept of Health.

Also, after speaking to a person familiar with Mr. LaCanfora's tailoring situation, who wished to have his name witheld, Mr. LaCanfora will have to be coming up with some spare cash quickly to buy a new suit for his appearances on Washington Post Live. With his only suit having been let out, or made bigger, to fit Mr. LaCanforas bulging waste line, as the source said "there just isn't anymore room. He either needs a new suit or he needs to say no to the free food. But I doubt he can do that as he usually eats 5 dumdum lollipops everytime he walks into the dry cleaner. I leave them for the kids but I guess he thinks they're for him too."

Mr. LaCanfora was reached for comment but quickly had to walk away after a sudden gust of wind blew powder sugar in his eyes and he needed to seek medical attention.

"I've covered every pro sports league to some degree and been around this business a long time, and I'd be stunned to find another executive with this type of position who can waste four hours of prime business hours per week - in season no less - yapping on the radio. What if an agent is trying to reach him? What if a GM has a trade offer? What if there is an emergency of some sort?"

he didn't say no other GM has such a show, he said he'd be stunned to find a GM doing a show for 4 hours during prime business hours of the day. read, then react. there is a difference between working 10-12 two days a week vs. 1 hour on a monday night. i recommend everyone who hates JLC's writing to avoid reading his columns. it's a simple as not clicking on your mouse. the more you respond to his columns, the more times the wapo people see traffic to his posts. so while you think you are being critical of him, he's laughing all the way to the bank (so to speak).

No, I'm not thankful we have JLC. A beat reporter is supposed to give you the day to day operations at Redskin field without his own personal bias or slant. When or if he gets promoted to columnist then he can give us his opinion in the paper but otherwise he should just leave his bias and slant and attacks on the team and front office to himself.

Let me ask you this....What is Jason Reid's opinion on the front office? On Zorn? On Portis? Which players does Jason Reid have a man crush on?

The answers are "I Don't Know". And why is that the answer, because he's a good beat reporter who knows his job isn't to interject his opinion in his writing but rather provide what he says at Redskin Park without a biased slant.

While I didn't like Wilbon when he became a columnist because for far too long he felt the need to raise race as an issue where it wasn't, he was a fair beat reporter and kept things balanced.

Colin,

Do you really believe that 4 hours a week is going to effect him doing his job, give me a break. He can get his job done in the other 90 hours of the week he works. You really think an NFL Gm only works 40 hours a week.

Snyder said he would not change the format or limit what the on air people could say, he has not done that. He did not however say he could not add a show, that would replace a piece of sh!t show that is not local anyway.

How long did it take JKC to field a winner?

I've never read his column because he's not a columnist like Wilbon, Wise, Boswell, etc. He's a beat reporter who has a hard time realizing that he isn't a columnist and uses his blog like a column. He hasn't accomplished anything to be deemed a columnist and most people have stopped reading JLC, he's the lowest rated beat writer and a columnist, Wise, gets more hits to his articles which are sporadic than JLC, and JLC writes once a day. The people are sending the message to The Post, but they know JLC isn't going anywhere and they won't have to replace him like they did his peers in the past. He's a hack and they know it, but their safe because at least they have stability with him because he's not really highly sought after and would never get a national gig.

Posted by: CVille | September 18, 2008 9:34 AM | Report abuse

Please give LaCanfora some credit. For decades the Post was nothing but a shill for the Redskins, rarely uttering a disparaging word. Now that someone comes along who reports with a skeptical eye (as all reporters should), he is raked over the coals by delusional homers. These blind mice (you know who you are) would get a better football team if they were a little more critical themselves.

I dont care to know JLCs opinions(they always have the same negative spin), just report the damn news like youre supposed to. just report vinny is getting a radio show, no need to go into ripping him and the redskins for no reason(other than JLCs personal agenda against them), who gives a dang what some outside source thinks about it as well. If portis goes out and sets the single game rushing record this week JLCs take would be to find a negative in it such as "While portis rushed for 304 yards on 26 carries his yards per carry were a paltry .000921 less than when adrian peterson set the record last season, the skins oline needs to step it up a bit more if they can at their age."

I was born in, and aside from my 4 years in the Navy have lived in this area my entire life. I've been a Redskins fan since Day One. The 3rd picture ever taken of me, just a couple of days after being born, and I've got my Dad's Redskins stocking cap (the one with the big fuzzy yellow ball on top - real old school) on my head. Not trying to impress anyone, just trying to establish my credentials when I say that, despite the fact that I never thought I would feel this way, I'm starting to realize that it's POSSIBLE the ridiculousness that this franchise's management has reached could make me finally give up. It's not happenening, but I'm starting to realize it's possible - that knowledge alone is a shock to my system.
I've also tried to give Snyder the benefit of the doubt for the past few years, my feeling being that he really does want to have a winner here, but just didn't know how to go about it - always with the hope that he would adapt and learn and improve. But this is coming close to the last straw. I'm truly flabbergasted. Sorry, don't know what else to say.

To all of the folks bringing up head coach's or GM's appearances on local radio or TV broadcasts for maybe 30 minutes a week and trying to compare that to Vinny's Radio (4) Hour(s) - Vinny already does that, and I don't think anyone has a problem with that. He's on Larry's call in show at least once a week, Zorn has a 20 or 30 minute spot on there as well, but that's comparing apples to oranges.

Yet another reason why it's getting harder and harder to be a Skins fan. I'd personally rather have SOMEONE in this area who actually questions the team and it's (big quotes here) "brain trust".

OK, I admit it, I hate Vinny, Dan, Larry Michael, Sonny, Sam, Portis, Santana, Zorn, Campbell, Laron, Springs, Smoot, and everyhting else Redskins. I, as a Ravens fan, know what real winning is about. All of these other "long-suffering" franchises around the league that have only been to the playoffs 2 out of the last 3 seasons couldn't begin to understand what I know. The Cowboys are the best team in the NFL, yeah, I know they haven't won a playoff game since Bill Clinton's first term, and that the Skins whooped their a$$ last season, but we all know championships are won on paper! Oh, sorry got to run, can't blog anymore because I have to run to one of my appearances on Washington Post Live. Oh yeah, I'm a big gay loser.

Hey, here's an idea, why don't you start calling this blog Redskins Outsider? Or better yet, Anti-Redskins Outsider? Just because nobody over at the park puts up with your attention-craved rips on everything and everyone Redskin, all in the name of bogus "sources", don't try to carry out your vendetta in this forum. Also, don't believe you mean anything to the true fans out there; and as for you mindless morons who can't think logically for themselves and really believe the crap this hack puts out there, go root for another team. We don't need ya!

Posted by: AJ | September 18, 2008 11:08 AM

Vinny hosting a radio show twice a week is the "last straw" for you? You've got to be kidding. We don't need fairweather fans like you, and in case you haven't noticed, we ARE a good team dumbass. We've done very well recently playing in the toughest division in football, and if you want to give me the BS argument that you measure GMs by just Super Bowls, then I suppose 31 of them should be fired at the end of the season. You sound like a total fool, we could stand to lose more "fans" like you anyway. Move to Dallas.

can't stand listening to Larry Michael and his @ss kissing, I'm sure as hell not gonna be able to listen to this guy. It's unfortunate there will be no sports shows in the DC market that can give constructive criticism and not the @ass kissing Larry Michael does whenever things are going bad. At least Bram would call out the team but maybe that's why he's not on the air anymore.

Posted by: Is this football or broadway!?! | September 18, 2008 10:04 AM

You're an idiot who speaks of that which he does not know. Everyone knows Bram left of his own volition for ESPN, you can catch him on ESPN news if you have a crush on him.

Posted by: Bill | September 18, 2008 9:38 AM

Skeptical eye, my ass. LaCantreporta has a hard on for ripping these guys, this goes way beyond "skeptical". One tip for you, Bill, you seem to need some help; no matter what you do it won't affect the team. You are an insignificant loser and no one cares what you or JLC thinks.

Hey LaChumpfora,

Did you catch the game last week? Just another case of you being proven dreadfully, horribly wrong. You should stop acting as though you know anything about football, whether it's schemes or talent evaluation, or predictions, you really look like an idiot every time you open your mouth. I'm sure next week you'll be talking about how the Skins should have drafted DeSean Jackson, right? Of course if that had been done you would have ripped the entire FO and coaching staff up and down for drafting another small WR, etc. You should start wearing a mask every time you pick up a paycheck at the Post, because you are absolutely stealing their money with your worthless work.

Careful Jasno, it's only a matter of time before the bumbling billionaire buys the Post and forces you to start writing the kissy-lovy kind of Redskins crap that's constantly flowing from Larry Micheal's pie hole.

If Jason doesn't want to be criticized--to be hated on--then he shouldn't report news like this with such an arrogant, sarcastic air.

When is he going to admit to anyone of his bazillion mistakes about:

Reche Caldwell (who he claims we "lowballed" with a leagueg minimum offer and now no one else wants either)

Torchaletta (who he says we never should have traded for a 6th round pick and $5 mil cap relief--an insanely good deal for us)

Rod Gardner (about whom he implies we were taken by trading for a 6th round pick--also an insanely good deal)

The Baltimore Ravens who he says are 100% better than the Skins which must mean we won 2 games last year.

Evaluating our own talent when only one players has ever left washington and outperformed his contract in the last ten years.

Rock Cartwright, who "deserved to be paid" because according to Jason he is a nice guy.

And if Vinnie turns out to have drafted well and the Skins do well, Jason will be the first person to give the credit to someone else.

That is how he rolls . . .

Jason is way beyond a "skeptical eye." He loves tearing people down. If pointing out all Jason's mistakes makes me a hater, so be it.

I cast a skeptical eye at my beloved skins and even more skeptical eye on the journalists that cover them.

This does not seem like a good idea but other GMs have shows and Jason would love to be able to grill Vinnie for four hours per week. He is upset that Vinnie is going around the media. That is what he is upset about.

And Jason is fair game for criticism on this.

first of all, JLC, you dont even annoy me anymore. Im more annoyed with your boss keeping you around. But anyway, who cares if VC does a lil radio show? Im sure if it ends up interrupting his job they will change the schedule. Dude(JLC) do something worth a s*%! for a change.

So, the lil' owner/GM now wants to play radio owner/GM?

Look what the little imp has done to this once proud franchise. It is the laughing stock of the entire league. Yeah, yeah, I know all about its record sales profits, that means squat. It's still the laughing stock - both on the field and off (in the front office).

I'm sure the rest of the league's teams are rolling on the floor with laughter. While they are doing real football operations, Vinny is now pretending to be the dufus with the big cowboy hat - Anus in the morning, I think he calls himself. Or, how about Lush Bimbaugh?

Yep, Vinny's right up there now, with the greats. Hey, all the Dano-lovers (all three of them) can now call themselves Danoheads!

By buying up all of the local sports media, he can now firmly establish that "THE EMPEROR HAS NO CLOTHS."

Since Vinny is worthless as a football person, he fits the bill perfectly for the radio. His face is enough to turn any living creature to stone. If his eyes bugged anymore, they'd probably fall out! A perfect face for radio, indeed.

Anyone listening to the Dano & Vinny show must truly carry the company banner (motto)
See no, Hear no, Speak no - truth.

Posted by: bulldog | September 20, 2008 12:56 PM | Report abuse

Flounder,

No, I don't think Vinny works a 40-hour work week, but it's irresponsible for him to take time away to be on the radio simply to promote his team. The only people who are going to listen to it are Skins fans, so really, who is proselytizing to? You can have issues with JLC's criticism, but at least it comes from the right place. I'd rather have someone be honest, rather than listen to people like that no-talent hack Larry Michael, George Michael and Vinny discuss the Skins.
