Next: Redskins add a WR to practice squad

The Redskins will win, because they play to the level of their competition... plus you can never look at win/loss records in NFC East games.

It's a free for all.

Sad to say, I think this game will be a blow out by the Eagles - which will add to our humiliation.

Skins never play well on MNF - even when we have a decent season - and especially not when someone is being inducted into the Ring of Honor (B Mitch on Monday Night).

I think this could be like the Pittsburgh game last season - the stadium dominated by Eagles fans with a big Eagles win and the final straw for the Skins.

sad but true...
Cleveland, OH (AP) - A seven-year old boy was at the center of a Cuyahoga County courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him... The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and regulation requiring that family unity be maintained to the highest degree possible.

The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her.

When the judge then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried and said that they also beat him.

After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him.

After two recesses to check legal references and confer with the child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the Washington Redskins, whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone.

This won't be pretty.

Sports_Guru, You complain all morning about the team, and reasons to dump them. Then you pick them to win on Monday night. Face it, you are a Classic Redskin Fan. (and that's not bad).

Lisa, I'm with you... I'm going to be watching, but I expect it to be a Halloween week horror show... replete with endless shots of Danny in the owner's box and ShermL calling down plays. And lots of Redskin fans dressed up in Eagle fan costumes.

I expect at least one Jaws breakdown of the play calling relay/telephone game from ShermL to Zorno to Soup, with a timer running to show how inefficient it is.

In the first quarter, Jason Campbell will be benched for Todd Collins. In the second quarter, Todd Collins will be benched for Suri Cruise. In the third quarter, Suri Cruise will be benched for Katie Holmes. In the fourth quarter, Katie Holmes will throw four touchdown passes to Levi Johnston and Dan Snyder will be named NFL player of the week.

Redskins aren't good on Monday night or prime time football even under the best circumstances. My gut tells me they'll get demolished. Maybe the defense keeps them close until the 2nd half.

During the half-time show, the Redskin cheerleaders will be replaced by a clone army of Sarah Palins with maps for pom-poms.

It seems like every time the FO has a decision they make the wrong choice. Even letting Zoron continue would have been better than the current setup. And I don't even want him... lol.

Posted by: Vic1 | October 21, 2009 11:05 AM | Report abuse

They'll lose this game and the primary reason will be Sherman Lewis - 5 years removed - calling plays using a language he just started learning two weeks ago.

We have many problems, but in this game, I see none more glaring than our play caller.

Lewis' fault - book it.

First and foremost, what the Redskins need is a change of culture. It doesn't have to be an overhaul of on-field personnel, but it does have to be a change at the top. Someone no-nonsense, someone that holds everyone accountable, and someone that doesn't accept BS from the players or management.

Wisenhunt did it with the Cardinals without overhauling the roster, Singletary is doing it with the 49ers without overhauling the roster, Rex Ryan seems to be doing it with the Jets without overhauling the roster, etc. Get a REAL head coach in here, and you'll see how quickly this thing turns around for the Redskins.

I know 4-12 can agree on this....So can I..

You can't predict health. And execution sucks.

Posted by: 4thFloor | October 21, 2009 10:05 AM

You can't predict health in general, 4th, but in the case of Thomas and Samuels, all indications were it would take a miracle for them to make it thru the season.

As far as execution...I subscribe to John McKay's famous response to the question: "What do you think about your team's execution?"...to which he replied, "I'm all for it!"

And as far as blaming the media?! Really? Are we still on that?

Posted by: 4-12 | October 21, 2009 11:07 AM | Report abuse

It'll be a close game, no matter what happens. I wouldn't even be surprised to see a Redskins win. That's just how we play the Eagles.

Everyone - Sherm Lewis is calling plays from a playbook. It's like picking items from a catalog. He has had time to study it. I don't think this is going to be an issue. As for Lewis being out of football for so long, he's not inventing plays, he is only calling them. I don't think there have been many advances in defenses since he left the NFL. Sherm Lewis brings a lot of experience to the table, and really, how bad could he be? Will he continuously run to the same side? Will he only pick plays where Santana Moss and Chris Cooley are the primary receivers? I'm thinking upgrade if for no other reason than it might be a little less predictable.

This is Zorn's last game as head coach. I am sure he knows this. I look for him to pull out all of the stops.

What am I saying? I'm saying the Redskins could win this one. I'm not saying blow out. I'm saying Washington's defense will keep it close and maybe a turnover could swing the game Washington's way. Who knows? Maybe they will finally hit a deep pass to Devin Thomas.

If a coaching move is to be made, and that seems inevitable, I agree with the Russ Grim idea. This team needs discipline!
The Russ Grimm hire sounds good but do we have any evidence that he's a disciplinarian?..I mean being an ex-HOG and all sounds like he could be but is there any feedback on his coaching style...
Posted by: jcnjcnj | October 21, 2009 10:54 AM

Everything I’ve read leads me to believe that he interviews very poorly……just my thoughts though. He was a great Oline coach with the Skins, but would be more along the lines of being from the “Cowher-tree”. Cowher knew how to run a team, and with the exception of some weird belief in Kordell Stewart, got rid of or benched his players when their performance dropped off. He was know as a players coach, but learned form the biggest disciplinarian of them all (Schottenheimer). Grimm learned and coached well while with the Steelers, and is the number 2 guy in AZ, where it only took them 2 years to get to the big game. He has interviewed for several HC jobs, but never seems to hit it off with the GM’s…..never seen it printed or discussed as to why he never lands the job. Helping to turn the Cardinals around is a feat that should have had teams poaching 75% of their coaching staff if you ask me. Bottom line is that Grimm was a tough, no nonsense player, and is probably still the same kind of coach, and that’s what this team needs.

I’ve said it before….look at Shawn Springs. If he stubbed his toe he sat out of practice and games, and it was tolerated in Ashburn because that’s what the current culture is. He hasn’t skipped anything in New England this year because he knows the coaches will put their foot up his butt if he gives less than 100% in practice and games. THAT is what the skins need from the FO and HC……give me Grimm any day!

"I think it's just gonna come down to not worrying about the media," Portis said. "You know, everybody want input around here. Being in Washington, D.C. and having so much focus on this team, everybody want their way. It's a fan that want Jason Campbell benched, that want Colt Brennan to play right now, and Colt Brennan injured. You know, it's a fan that want me benched and they should have drafted Knowshon Moreno from Denver; look, they didn't, Denver did. It's always, 'Oh, this could work.'..."

charley42, that's funny, hadn't seen that (I'd heard about the Catholic church recruiting disgruntled Episcopalians thing, but not the Cowboys/Skins parody version).

A friend of mine, a long-suffering Seahawks fan, was commiserating about the Skins and said he thinks this is a prime opportunity for the Skins to rebound and rattle off a couple of wins, to get all our hopes up again, make some of us think they've "turned it around"... only to crumple a month or so down the road. I love that a) a Seahawks fan is comforting me and 2) our franchise is so lousy we merit comparison to any crummy franchise you can name... sigh...

Also, I blame the media for my addiction to Redskins Insider.

Just read the Jack Kent Cooke/John Cook article and feel vomity. Complete confirmation of things I've heard from someone who worked very very closely with The Owner.

Any chance that league might let us play this game on a Thursday night instead of Monday night? Skins do better on Thursday nights.

On the other hand, McNabb's comments from last year's pummeling by the Skins should be good locker room material. Its not like he didn't get pantsed by the RAIDERS last week. I can easily foresee a sack resulting in re-injury to that floating rib and re-entry of Kolb before the game is over. Divisional games are by far the trickiest to pick in pool betting. These are two teams with a good sense of hating each other. Trotter should be getting picked on fairly well. At this point, the players gotta be thinking that the season is as close to shambles as you can get, so they might as well play "guts out" to have fun against a despised rival.

I went with the majority on this one (Eagles by 10-19) only because our defense may have a little life in them yet. But Gannon’s comments about potential disaster on offense are haunting. I just hope neither of our QBs gets hurt – that’s what really ticks me off about Snyder/Cerrato. Whether you like Campbell or Collins doesn’t matter – a guy could get really hurt behind this travesty of an o-line.

I don't think he's bad, just not worth what he was asking for as far as a contract. Teams have stayed away because of his salary demands and he's been injured recently.

Cincy let him go because they decided to get younger on the line and let Andre Smith take his place.

He can't be any worse then the current tackles on the roster. If they are paying him vet. minimum it's not a bad pickup.

It has Cris Carter and Antonio Freeman talking about how much they enjoyed having Lewis as a play caller. They say that he's a master at red zone and 3rd down play calling, and that he loves to consistently go deep. They also say that he should be getting Thomas and Kelly much more involved as he likes utilizing big receivers on underneath routes.

This doesn't really make me any more confident in the offense, but I guess it can't really get any worse than it has been. The offense has looked SO bad and SO stagnant the past few weeks...there's really no way that Sherm Lewis makes it worse I don't think. I guess we'll see

I don't see the Skins getting blown out. It will be close and low scoring like almost all Skins games. Andy Reid is probably the only playcaller in the league worse than Zorn (and he doesn't have the excuse of lack of experience). Skins deefense is going to get more than its share of sacks and turnovers. Offense should get some short fields. Would not surprise me in the least if the Skins win.

If he stays, he is so undermined by the FO that he looks incompetent, and he’ll likely never get another shot in the league even as high as OC. Why not go out swinging? RESPONSE FROM BARNO

All-

I see that Poopy_McPoop has been re-posting many of my comments on here lately. I think it's pretty obvious that Poopy_McPoop is actually Jason La Canfora, and he's finally exacting his revenge on me. Obviously JK. In all seriousness, those quotes are pretty humorous when you put them all together, and I certainly deserve it--as I did the same thing reposting the comments of those who demanded Gary Williams be fired after the Terps made the tourney last March. I do wish someone else had done this other than Poopy, who is universally despised over at the Terrapin Insider for his pointless and often dishonest comments. But someone had to do it, I asked for it.

However, other than the prediction comments he quotes of mine, no context was given and the comments were often cropped by Poopy. This is Poopy's m.o. For instance, in quoting Dan Steinberg on his chat this week, he intentionally deleted Steinberg's kind words including "When a similar (though much less intense) despair was afflicting Terps basketball last winter, Barno repeatedly said that the Terps would be fine and that everyone would love Gary Williams again by April. I think he was right. When national analysts were predicting doom and gloom for the Strasburg negotiations, he repeatedly said that Strasburg would sign for a reasonable number and there was no need for even the slightest nerves, even into the last few hours. He was right there, too." And "the WaPost is better because of Barno." Poopy dishonestly removed those comments when quoting Steinberg's response.

That's the kind of slimy tactic he uses. In addition, there are a few comments Poopy attributes to me that I do not recall writing at all (Eddie Jordan being driven out of town by the media? Can't imagine why I would ever have said that, I never felt that way..but maybe if some context had been given I could see where that came from).

But I am not running away from any of the many comments I wrote about this team. I posted a few times the other day that I was about as wrong as one can get this year about the Redskins. I was wrong in spectacular fashion. I apologized for my relentless idiotic predictions but it obviously didn't satisfy some, and that's their prerogative (btw, PDiddy, this "disturbed jerk" is still interested in donating to your non profit which as I recall aims to promote fatherhood/fight against out of wedlock births--one issue we do agree on. I've asked before if you're willing to post the name of the charity, but if not that's understandable and no big deal).

To be continued...

RESPONSE FROM BARNO PART II

There are other claims I vehemently disagree with, namely that I have a campaign against Jason Reid. While I have on a couple of occasions pointed out some things he's written that I have taken exception to, I have also complimented his reporting on numerous occasions, both on the blog and in email to him. I call it as I see it. He and I have had good back and forths, and he thanked and credited me for calling him out on his Mason preseason comments, and said he dedicated a blog item to explaining his stance on Mason thanks to my writing to him).

As for Jason La Canfora, I'll leave that one alone since he is gone now. I'll just say that I was far from alone in my stance on him.

Last but not least, as for Poop's repeated claims that I am the 2 fake poopies that are on Terp insider, all I can say is you can believe what you want, but that's not my style at all. Someone created a fake Barno account on here a while ago and was posting on Redskins Insider for months pretending to be me (he still pops up from time to time). I have no doubt at least some of resentment by Diddy and some others was built bc of some of the things that were said in that time by the fake Barno, but it's no big deal to me. I just feel those tactics are pretty damn cheap and again, I wouldn't do something like that.

I'm not running away from any of my actual comments, more than anything I am just crushed that the Redskins did not live up to them than anything else. I will always believe that this team could have been a good team had Thomas, and later Samuels, not gone down. But I don't think we'll ever get to find out. But I can take the heat and as I said before, feel free to continue to pile on me--I deserve it--and I expect Poopy and others will.

That's about it. Sorry for the book, there was a lot of ground to cover.

ugh - take one persona and stick widdit. Unless you're CPo ... then pick any one except yourself.

And about Monday - it is true that great D will keep you in any game. If they CAN figure out what they're doing on O, they could conceivably win anygame. ST has to step up, though.

Returners: TRY RUNNING STRAIGHT FOR 5 YARDS.

Larry Michael is a typical Snyder Redskin Product. He is a Redskin shill, no matter what happens on or off the field. Herzog was the best, and not tied to ownership by the wallet. If Jon Miller had worked for the Redskins, Snyder would have Angelos'd him and fired him as well! You could write a textbook about what NOT to do as an owner by observing Snyder. No heart or soul or class.... only green.

Chrislarry, thanks bro. We had our differences during the JLC era. I think we agreed on one thing though: our undeniable love of this team.

To better times.

Alex35332,

I've never made any racist rants here or anywhere else. I fight racism and discrimination for a living and that's and that's pretty disturbing someone would write something racist under the name Barno on here. Disagree with things I've written all you want, call me out all you want, but creating a fake name and pretending to be me and then write racist stuff under my name, doesn't get much lower than that.

Pardon my lack of knowledge on our newly acquired LT Levi Jones. Is he even good? Why wasn't he on an NFL squad until now? Seems like putting a bandaid over cancer.

Posted by: FedorEm | October 21, 2009 11:13 AM | Report abuse

You're defintely not alone in that assumption. Last week I said signing an old broken down linemen would be like putting a band aid on cancer. Drafting a top 10 left tackle would be like chemo. I'd like to see a left tackle taken in the first and a right tackle taken in the second.

Dik, agreed, maybe Brian Mitchell can impart that wisdom on Monday night... dude caught punts and went straight upfield virtually every time. Positive yards, almost every time, as evinced by his terrific career return average (not to mention his absurd yardage total).

Couldn't be more different than ARE's apparent inability to do anything but 1) fair catch or b) run sideways, if not backwards, upon catching a punt. Which might be tolerable if he were a threat to ever break one, but he isn't.

Hey, we got plenty of good body types already. What we're lacking is the mean streak. And you can find us plenty of that over there.

What you should really bring us back is some Israeli cheerleaders. Oooh, la, la. Rush Limbaugh: "Two of my favorite things are beautiful women and guns. In Israel there are plenty of beautiful women and they're carrying guns."

As I've said, the problem with Barno isn't that he's a shameless homer. There's actually nothing at all wrong with that.

The problem with Barno is that he would question the loyalty of anyone who disagreed with him, as if he were the sole arbiter of what it meant to be a real fan. He embarked on a completely ludicrous vendetta against Jason La Canfora and, more recently, Jason Reid. In what he has written up here and elsewhere on teh WashPo, one can only conclude that Barno is a disturbed and paranoid individual who believes all those that disagree with him are somehow, in some way against him.

Those of us who have been subjected to Barno's delirious ranting and bullying since the beginning of this blog relish the comeuppance that Poopy is serving.

At some point it will get old, sure. But let us not ever forget what a complete jerk Barno is. And let us thank Poopy for multi-tasking and proving it without a shadow of a doubt. It's not my blog, and it's certainly not my place to say who can and cannot post. But I sincerely hope Barno does not come back. This blog is a lot more civilized and interesting without him.

Did you notice that the ESPN power rankings have Detroit one rung above the Skins and KC one rung below the Skins? Do that make sense? Each team has only one victory, that being a win over the Skins, but KC beat the Skins on the road while Detroit beat them at home. KC's win over the Skins was tougher, therefore they should be power ranked above Detroit, shouldn't they? I suppose they might say that KC's win was easier b/c the Skins were playing w/o their PB LT for most of the game. Another condom is why the Skins are power ranked above KC when KC just finished beating them at home and even though the Skins have one more victory than KC, both teams suck pretty bad to begin with.

On this note I was talking to a buddy who's wife is getting ready to pop any second now with his first child. He's a close, very close friend of mine and he's having a boy.

We got to talking and being a bit sentimental perhaps but i truly hope that one day his son and the sons of pepes like CL get to et al. get to experience what i experienced as a kid. If so, I will make a point to ensure that the kids realize how lucky they are.

I took the skins success for granted and now that it's gone, it really stinks. I wish someone had told me just how great and fleeting a moment it is.

I think the late Yasser Arafat was a blocking tight end early in his career (couldn't really catch, like Yoder, so he mostly did chip blocking).

Who are Philthy's receivers nowadays? The new little fella and White Lightning? For FF purposes, I'm not feeling the power behind Jason Avant (the Justin Fargas of receivers).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Lewis will simply be choosing which of Jim Zorn's plays to run at any given time. As such, it wouldn't seem to matter what Antonio Freeman and Cris Carter think of Lewis's skills, since he was calling his own plays on those teams a decade ago.

Would a gameday playcaller have the ability to send receivers into different routes etc.? I can't imagine so. Now, if Zorn gets fired next week, I can see the team trying to implement some new ideas on offense.

For the record, I picked the Eagles by nine or less. My guess for the final score is 10-3 Eagles. The Redskins D will make life miserable for McNabb, but our offense will stink up the joint again. If the Chiefs' D can hold us to six points, I shudder to think what will happen against the Iggles.

So redskinshead, by your breakdown who do you think would have been quicker to turn over the managing of the Skins to a talented and energetic FO?

The "weak" Cooke Jr or "strong" Snyder?

Posted by: chrislarry

I understand your point. I think Cooke would have kept things as they were - it sounds like that is what he thought should have happened in the article - so the real question is did the Redskins have a talented front office when Snyder bought them? Clearly they were better than what the team has now; however, I hope that Snyder eventually learns to leave things alone and put his faith in a real football professional.

I think the Buffalo Bills are an example of a team with a weak owner. Wilson's health is not good and he's so strapped for cash that he had to auction off some games to be played in Toronto. He has tried to find someone to run his team and it just is not happening. The team is a wreck - which is about where Washington is right now. The key difference is I think Snyder couldn't have made his biliions without being a smart guy and he will eventually figure out his meddling is what is wrong. The situation in Buffalo is going to require an ownership change and when that happens, bye-bye Buffalo...

I sure Zorn has some plays that are good he's just not calling them in a way that keeps the defense guessing and Lewis' way may be better..it should definitely be different..what they were saying is that Lewis used most of his weapons and not just a few..Zorn had more to lose when he started calling plays so he tried to be extra sure..Lewis has nothing to lose so he may let thing lose and we may just score enough to Win...Skins 17 iggles 14

I certainly hope you're right, but I'm doubtful.

If Lewis calls out, say "sixty-five toss power trap", that doesn't mean that Thomas and Kelly are automatically going to take the place of Moss and ARE, or that Campbell will start throwing the ball in their direction instead of 10 yards out of bounds.

The one area I can see changing is which plays are used in the red zone. That clearly needs to be changed ASAP. However, if nobody can get open in the end zone or if Campbell refuses to throw the ball up for grabs and let Thomas and Kelly jump for it, then it won't make much difference.

Herzog was excellent during most of his lengthy tenure here, but toward the end, he had "lost his fastball," and was making a lot of mistakes. IMO, it was time for him to go. I, too, wish they had found someone better than Michael, though, he sucks. I think it's time for Sam Huff to go, too. I can't remember the last time he made a comment that wasn't already painfully obvious. I used to listen to the radio broadcasts with the TV on, but the sound turned down, but no more. I really dislike the current radio announcing team (except for Sonny).
