Do we need Springs against Pittsburgh? Do they have a big body threat? Smoot or Rogers can cover Ward.

Jon, I have bonus points. I have WAY, WAY, WAY too many bonus points. These suckers are like rabbits, turn your back and suddenly they've multiplied 10 times.

Anyone catch the block Ward threw on Keith Rivers, LB from Cincy?? Yikes......broke his jaw.....Ward is a bad mama-jama....

JM220 - This is Springs last year..... Sign him for less next year and only play him against NFC East Teams and in the playoffs......

I'm sorry peeps, but I don't want Springs back next year. He'll be a year older and can't stay on the field, at least the past two years he hasn't. People were wondering if Marcus Washington has broken down, maybe the same question can be posed RE: Springs.

I like the guy and all, but I can't even give him the excuse of "saving his body for the game", like you can Portis, because he UNlike Portis is always on the field.

But if he's hurt than he's hurt. I won't even begin to seriously question a football player's toughness.

Posted by: RedDMV | October 22, 2008 2:13 PM | Report abuse

But what's the exchange rate on post points for bonus points?

As to your question about the block, I did miss that, thought that was the early game on Sunday here in H-Town. - I was actually trying to find ways to make that game interesting for myself, and it just didn't work out ... so bored I cleaned the kitchen floor until the 'Skins game started.

Posted by: JohnDinHouston | October 22, 2008 2:13 PM | Report abuse

Gotta look out for santonio Holmes, he has a better skill set then Heines. But ward is a tricky vet, I could see carlos getting rubbed the wrong way by him, causing penelaties or mental error. i would like to see Smoot playing against him. And rember to keep your head ona swivel aound 86, thats not the first defender hes knocked silly.

Posted by: Stu27 | October 22, 2008 2:15 PM | Report abuse

Meant to say Springs against heines if he can play. he should be able to its been a while for him now.

Posted by: Rypien11 | October 22, 2008 1:58 PM

At 6'0", Ward is the shortest receiver on the Steelers. After that its Santonio Holmes (6'2") then Nate Washington (6'1"), then Limas Sweed (6'4").

Skins need Springs for as long as he can run ... he's just savvier than Smoot.

How did we drift into Steelers talk? Both the Skins and the Steelers could be very different teams after this weekend.

Skins have a passing game to re-establish up here and it starts in Motown.

Posted by: dcsween | October 22, 2008 2:17 PM | Report abuse

Jon, its basically 100 Post points for one bonus point, not a good rate at all. Its due to the inverse relationship between the bond market, and the relative means of which there is no tomorrow. Complicated to say the least.....So in the long run, I would have loved to help Cindy, but it just would have ended up costing her more than it was worth.

When the Redskins play Pitt, the LB/S/CB's need to have their heads on a swivel, because Ward is just NASTY. The first thing of Rivers that hit the ground was the back of his head after the block. A de-cleater.....

I juust looked up red zone efficiency for 2008. I found some info on profootballweekly.com. Here's the link: http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW/NFL+Statistics/Inside+the+Red+Zone/2004/finalredzn.htm?mode=offense. This says the skins are 18th offensively and 15th defensivly in this ranking. I think both are a little surprising considering the skins success in rushing the ball and what seems to be a stout goal line defense.

Morally cannot root for Dallas. Moreover I think it makes good sense to root for a loss ...let's face it, much as we'd love to see them implode - and they may well- they are still a very talented football team that could turn it around as quickly as they've tanked. Go Bucs I say.

Like our rooting has any influence...we football fans, such a frenzied, irrational lot...

We do need Springs, he's a great defensive player.

And as far as "jumping on the pile" I don't care. These things are for expressing one's opinion right? My opinion is that the Skins passing game needs a lot of improvement.

As far as injuries: Sammy Baugh was probably one of the greatest quarterbacks ever and he was a good punter. You never saw him with a "groin pull" or an "injured calf" so he wouldn't play. I saw Dave Butz finish a 2nd half of a game on a broken leg. It was painful to watch Larry Brown run, his knees were so mashed up. I could continue on and on, but it seems like a lot of modern day players won't play hurt. Turf Toe - what a joke.

Sad to say this, but IF Springs does not re-sign with the Skins next year, he will probably end up in Dallas, since TO is his boy, and his dad is still in a Dallas hospital (I think). Plus Jerrah will probably be willing to throw more money at him than Danny will. I think it will come down to how much Springs still wants to play, how healthy he is, and which team he feels is closer to a ring. Just specualting here though. Don't see our FO even talking about offering him an extension. At this point, if they really wanted him, I think we would be hearing about talks. I just hope he gets healthy and stays healthy into Dec and beyond.

Forgot to mention in my post that Dallas is hurting for quality CB's.....

Posted by: dlhaze1 | October 22, 2008 2:38 PM | Report abuse

I love Springs but he's a bit of a prima donna. He refuses to re-negotiate his salary, refuses to train in Ashburn and can't stay healthy. If he can't get with the program then get gone. You're no good if you're barely on the field...especially for the money he's making.

Posted by: redpitbull98 | October 22, 2008 2:44 PM | Report abuse

Cjim,
I love to hearing about the teams of old and even remember watching Larry Brown as a youngster. He was amazing, first Brown, then Riggins, now Portis.

I also admire and respect any players today that can play hurt, but in general, I'd say that the level of athleticism in the league is much higher, so its very rare today to see a player that can play hurt and outplay a backup.

Posted by: _Stumped_1 | October 22, 2008 2:44 PM | Report abuse

Funny how the Browns suspended Kellen Winslow for his "disparaging remarks" about the team. Wow. Makes me wonder what it would take for Jerry Jones to suspend one of his players.......
I also hope that nobody asks Clinton Portis what he thinks about it.

Posted by: dlhaze1 | October 22, 2008 2:45 PM | Report abuse

captjim, have you ever experienced "turf toe"? Do you even know what it is?

Zorn does need to improve the passing game, but it is STILL A NEW OFFENSE FOR THE ENTIRE TEAM, INCLUDING ZORN.

It will get better, you "woeful" idiot.

If Springs is healthy for a playoff run this year, pay the man.

Are we so deep at DB we can let Springs walk? No. Can he help coach up Tryon and maybe a new pick next year? yep.

It would be good if he starts practicing with the team, for that very reason. Zorn should insist upon it.

Posted by: _Stumped_1 | October 22, 2008 2:49 PM | Report abuse

No craig2 I have never had turf toe. But my opinion is that if Dave Butz can finish a game on a broken leg then todays players should be able to "gut it out" with turf toe.

You make a great point about the backups, Stumped 1 - I had not considered that. Someone said in an earlier post that they thought there was about a 10% skill difference between the best team in the league and the worst team in the league. I wonder what the percentage difference in skill level would be from a starter like Springs and a backup?

Posted by: captjim | October 22, 2008 2:54 PM | Report abuse

I hope Steelers destroy Giants. 1. B/c they take a loss, 2. I would love the Steelers to be riding sky high as they head into their MNF game against us.

Also no way root for Pukes over Bucs...1. does it even have to be said? 2. B/C the cowboys could be done...beat them down now while they have injuries and ramp up the infighting....bloods in the water let the sharks circle...maybe they are out of playoff picture by the time it matters if they stockpile losses now.....

Atlanta over Philly, def...Atlanta will stumble down the stretch...so if they can beat an NFC East team now mid season...you take it.

He's already being paid a handsome salary...regardless of whether he plays or not.

Coach 'em up? Release him and let him come back as a coach...not getting paid for that and that's what they 'pay' coaches for.

Can't practice on one leg even if Zorn wants him to. Ever woke up with a charley horse in your calf? Imagine walking around like that, he is!

Again...no hate here. I love Springs, he's been a great replacement for Champ but he's aging and his body is beginning to feel the affects of multiple NFL seasons. I certainly hope he can regain his health and help the team thru the thick part of the schedule but if he can't, the team can't afford to continue paying him his current salary.

captjim, good to see you're back; always appreciate the opinions and a good pile on.

With Springs, it's going to come down to $, IMO. I betcha he's gonna ask for top corner dollars, and we won't be willing to give it (nor should we)- with emergence of Rogers it doesn't make financial sense. We've been phasing him out already, having him lineup like a safety in some formations. He didn't want to renegotiate a year or 2 ago, and I think that ticked off Danny. He's been good when he's healthy, but he's getting old and does not stay healthy.

Not only is TO in Dallas, but so is his beleaugered father and family.

Even though Springs doesn't get paid to coach up the younger players, as a seasoned vet, he ought to anyways as much as he can. It isn't as if the younger players would have the ability to take the starting spot away from him when he's healthy.

Posted by: JesusFreakKaren | October 22, 2008 3:11 PM | Report abuse

But p1funk - how about the other points made? Do we really feel we are flush enough at DB to let him go? What if Rogers gets injured? Also, an earlier column by Jason focused on younger players looking up to hime and learning from him Plus, he seems to be still a great DB even when he is not 100% physically. Danny has deep pockets, I agree - pay the man - keep him.

Posted by: captjim | October 22, 2008 3:14 PM | Report abuse

When is Springs' contract up?

Springs is a beast when healthy, no doubt. But I don't see how you resign this guy when his contract is through.

He's aging.
He can't stay healthy.

I mean it looks like some of you have that Gibbs loyalty (See: Thrash & Cartwright).

AGAIN, let me say, before some toolbag accuses me of wanting to gut the roster of all our talent (starring at White Lies aka TheTruth), I LIKE Springs. No doubt the best corner on the 'skins and probably the NFC East when healthy... but that's the problem, he can't. He turns 34 this coming offseason. How much longer does he have left anyway?

I guess we'll know when he's getting baked for six on the regular, by then the RI whining level would've hit critical mass.
