Washington's Injury

Jasno just called this in...he's having Loseable Type issues:

Marcus Washington dislocated his right elbow. X-rays showed no signs of fractures, so that, at least, is good news.

Dislocated elbow is It may take from 2 to 8 weeks for the elbow to heal.

Posted by: calebt17 | August 18, 2007 9:16 PM | Report abuse

Dislocated elbow. A quick check of The Google says that Drew Brees and Rex Tucker both had the same injury and were out around 8 weeks.

Posted by: P Diddy | August 18, 2007 9:16 PM | Report abuse

The Cowgirls are lighting up the Broncos. Barber has 2 rushing TDs already.

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | August 18, 2007 9:16 PM | Report abuse

What these guys need is some adamantium.

Posted by: P Diddy | August 18, 2007 9:17 PM | Report abuse

Please let it be the elbow. If it is the shoulder very well could be a rotator cuff that not going to be good at all.

Posted by: jm220 | August 18, 2007 9:17 PM | Report abuse

Jasno just called to say they are X-raying Washington's elbow even as I type.

Posted by: Cindy | August 18, 2007 9:17 PM | Report abuse

This is sucking. Injuries are terrible.

Posted by: calebt17 | August 18, 2007 9:18 PM | Report abuse

You can always pop a shoulder back in, tho. An elbow, not so much.

Posted by: Cindy | August 18, 2007 9:18 PM | Report abuse

Great punt return for a TD in the Chargers/Rams game.

Posted by: P Diddy | August 18, 2007 9:18 PM | Report abuse

two-hand-touch from here until the 9th.

Posted by: thedeaner | August 18, 2007 9:18 PM | Report abuse

Please tell me there is nothing wrong with Rocky Mac.

Posted by: jm220 | August 18, 2007 9:19 PM | Report abuse

I think the Redskins should just refuse to come out for the second half.

Posted by: Cindy | August 18, 2007 9:20 PM | Report abuse

Bubba Tyer getting a workout tonight. Man Rocky is everywhere.

Posted by: calebt17 | August 18, 2007 9:20 PM | Report abuse

he's fine, and another great play

Posted by: Anonymous | August 18, 2007 9:20 PM | Report abuse

Finally catching up.... turned it on right as Lloyd scored. Spent a couple of minutes worrying about why Collins was already in.

Carlos tackles Ward out of bounds without a celebration!

Posted by: cload and daggar | August 18, 2007 9:21 PM | Report abuse

OK Rocky Mac back on the full. Huff is making fun of him. lol

Posted by: jm220 | August 18, 2007 9:21 PM | Report abuse

I can hear Jasno now....

"All of these injuries...are they do to a soft training camp?"

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | August 18, 2007 9:21 PM | Report abuse

F Dale Lindsay!

Posted by: chris larry | August 18, 2007 9:22 PM | Report abuse

Because your knee gets stronger the more it gets hit?????

Posted by: cload and daggar | August 18, 2007 9:23 PM | Report abuse

Man Rocky Mac is all over the place right now.

Posted by: jm220 | August 18, 2007 9:23 PM | Report abuse

Chris Larry, best comment of the night.

Posted by: P Diddy | August 18, 2007 9:23 PM | Report abuse

Only one penalty this half and on special teams

Posted by: chris larry | August 18, 2007 9:24 PM | Report abuse

Please remember to SJK Jack's kids. Thanking you in advance...

Posted by: Cindy | August 18, 2007 9:24 PM | Report abuse

Wow, wow, wow, I love watching this defense.

Posted by: calebt17 | August 18, 2007 9:25 PM | Report abuse

Wow I am in pre-season shape brought the penalty jinx...sorry guys and gals...

Posted by: chris larry | August 18, 2007 9:25 PM | Report abuse

Some of my best memories as a kid were listening to Frank, Sonny, and Sam. But listening to Sonny and Sam call this game now is painful. It's like a bunch of old dudes wondering where everything is. Maybe it's time for Riggo...

Posted by: P Diddy | August 18, 2007 9:26 PM | Report abuse

F SJK....

SJK

Posted by: chris larry | August 18, 2007 9:26 PM | Report abuse

Lol P Diddy.

It's like we are listening the game at the 'Skins Retirement home.

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | August 18, 2007 9:27 PM | Report abuse

Give the game ball to Rocky Mac. Why they didn't play this kid last year?

Posted by: jm220 | August 18, 2007 9:27 PM | Report abuse

Blaming Dale Lindsay is too Inside Baseball... I don't have any way to evaluate that... but from what I saw on the field, Rocky wasn't ready to play every down.

OTOH, now he is.

Posted by: cload and daggar | August 18, 2007 9:28 PM | Report abuse

Rogers! Told you guys that he will bring it this year. I thought Jack was no longer with us.

Posted by: jm220 | August 18, 2007 9:28 PM | Report abuse

Viscount.....you bring the truth...sam and sonny sound O-L-D

Sam: "They don't have franco harris back there"...

UM they won a SB 2 years ago...at least use Jerome Bettis...

They have referenced an player who played past 1984

Posted by: chris larry | August 18, 2007 9:29 PM | Report abuse

Dale Lindsay is a poor judge of talent at linebacker?

He probably wasn't prepared last year but he obviously is now. Williams has praised his work ethic in the offseason.

Posted by: calebt17 | August 18, 2007 9:29 PM | Report abuse

In St. Joe's two tenures, you can count on one hand the number of coaches he has actually fired. Back in the day, even collosal failure special teams coach Chuck Banker was reassigned to the scouting department. Lindsay was fired. The evidence is circumstantial, but it's there nonetheless...

Posted by: P Diddy | August 18, 2007 9:30 PM | Report abuse

Gregg (give him the extra G) has the tools right now. That two-minute defense was manly.

Posted by: cload and daggar | August 18, 2007 9:30 PM | Report abuse

I love seeing Lemar Marshall on the bench. He got burned so much last year.

Posted by: calebt17 | August 18, 2007 9:30 PM | Report abuse

If hating Dale Lindsay is wrong I don't want to be right!

Posted by: chris larry | August 18, 2007 9:30 PM | Report abuse

LMGO CL. I am with you on that one brother. Man I am like a little child right now. Can't stay still in my chair at the computer. 10-6 and the playoff baby.

Posted by: jm220 | August 18, 2007 9:32 PM | Report abuse

This is tough. Marcus Washington might be our best defender. With these injuries in mind, it's probably just as well that Betts only had 6 carries tonight.

Posted by: Joe the Fan | August 18, 2007 9:32 PM | Report abuse

I love me some Janso, but we gotta take him to the woodshed with all this "steelers are so manly they have a togh camp, Skins are girlie men..." cr@p!

Seems to me we pushed them all over the field!

Posted by: chris larry | August 18, 2007 9:33 PM | Report abuse

Viscount, you're right that there is evidence -- but you really have to read the tea leaves to parse it.
What's your 'moment in time' memory of RockyMac during 2006? If you're me, it's the play where he didn't realize he should be on the field, comes back just in time to make a leaping tackle for a loss.

Posted by: cload and daggar | August 18, 2007 9:34 PM | Report abuse

Any update on MWash yet? Is the elbow dislocated? Bram said there was a "fear" it was dislocated. Maybe just sprained or something.

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | August 18, 2007 9:36 PM | Report abuse

Now maybe Linday is at fault for not being able to connect with the 'Yute', but only people like Jasno could really give you that kind of insight...

Posted by: cload and daggar | August 18, 2007 9:36 PM | Report abuse

jm220
you are a child with that prediction ( 10-6 playoff)Redskins D sucks and the offense is worse.U & CL need to go back to the gay bar and shut the fu** up!

Posted by: YO MAMA | August 18, 2007 9:37 PM | Report abuse

No news yet. They are running a special with Joe T and Campbell looking at film.

Posted by: calebt17 | August 18, 2007 9:37 PM | Report abuse

See I come to try and get an update on all the injuries and of course I see more angry posts with name calling people being jerks to eachother. I just don't get it.

Posted by: Jack | August 18, 2007 9:39 PM | Report abuse

Yo Mama thanks for the input, your rapier wit and keen observations are just the kind of discourse were looking for...

Posted by: chris larry | August 18, 2007 9:39 PM | Report abuse

No word yet and I ain't no physician or nuthin' but I'd think I could take one look at an elbow and see if it were dislocated.

Posted by: Cindy | August 18, 2007 9:39 PM | Report abuse

Please let pre-season end..please let the pre-season end...please let the pre-season end...please let the pre-season end....

A solid first half. Sitting here in Florida finally getting up from a sweat soaked chair. Encouraging news about Campbell but folks he needs his reps..I don't remember who but maybe I wait and don't play JC until the last pre-season game for a series or two.

As for Marcus Washington...one can only hope that elbow did not dislocate but from Jason's post...it doesn't look good. Here's to praying for a minor miracle on Marcus's elbow.

Please let the pre-season end..please let the pre-season end...please let the pre-season end NOW for the love of God.

Posted by: Jonathan | August 18, 2007 9:40 PM | Report abuse

I'd think they were X-raying to see if there were breaks and such, no? Or, perhaps, if it looked okay, it could be popped back into place.

Posted by: Cindy | August 18, 2007 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Welcome back jack....dudes like scrappin dont take it so personal

Posted by: chris larry | August 18, 2007 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Encouraging time of possession in the first half: 18:20 for the skins, and 11:40 for the steelers.

Posted by: Mark (in 21132) | August 18, 2007 9:41 PM | Report abuse

CL keep the good energy brother. Let it go we are looking are winning. The O line looks good and JC didn't do any real damage to the knee. The D is all over the place. Nothing is going to still the joy tonight.

Posted by: jm220 | August 18, 2007 9:42 PM | Report abuse

Strawberry shortcake, dislocated right elbow MW

Posted by: calebt17 | August 18, 2007 9:42 PM | Report abuse

Official word:
No fracture...just a dislocation.

Posted by: Cindy | August 18, 2007 9:42 PM | Report abuse

It is officially a dislocation but no fractures or anything, sounds better than it looked, they said on tv it can just be popped back in.

Posted by: Jack | August 18, 2007 9:42 PM | Report abuse

X-rays show no break.

Posted by: LH | August 18, 2007 9:42 PM | Report abuse

Gee, and only 2.5 exhibition games left! UGH!

Posted by: DS | August 18, 2007 9:42 PM | Report abuse

Man, I'm having a night, on one hand the D looks good, and I'm withholding judgement on the O until the line's working with starters. That being said, I'm more interested in whether any 'Skins are left on the turf than the outcome of the play at this point.

Posted by: Junior | August 18, 2007 9:42 PM | Report abuse

jack -- anonymity breeds disrespect. You can either ignore it, or let it sour the experience to the point that you no longer care to check in.
No one knows you, so they're willing to say things to their computer that they'd never if we were clustered around a bar watching the game.
It's a blog. Crown it if you want, but it is what they say it is.

Posted by: cload and daggar | August 18, 2007 9:43 PM | Report abuse

"crown it" never ceases to make me giggle

Posted by: chris larry | August 18, 2007 9:46 PM | Report abuse

Geeze In in Peru sitting in the lounge with aftershocks and I have to worry about the injury after injury. What is going on up there? Cambell look ok?

Posted by: Skinz | August 18, 2007 9:46 PM | Report abuse

cload and daggar or you could just go at them. Sometimes it can be fun. lol

Posted by: jm220 | August 18, 2007 9:46 PM | Report abuse

Well now that I'm back I gotta say they've looked pretty darn good tonight, how freaking good is Rocky looking? And to me it appears Pucillo will be the starting guard now doesn't it? Jansen looks better too, still getting pushed around some but at least not a matador tonight. Heyer doesn't look bad either. Even JC's injury happened after he had enough time to throw it deep!

Posted by: Jack | August 18, 2007 9:46 PM | Report abuse

Campbell bruised knee usually day to day.

MW dislocated elbow will find out in a couple days how long he will be out.

Posted by: calebt17 | August 18, 2007 9:47 PM | Report abuse

everytime i leave a starter gets hurt...

Posted by: littery | August 18, 2007 9:47 PM | Report abuse

Thank you Jack. Good to see you can make positive post. Welcome back.

Posted by: jm220 | August 18, 2007 9:48 PM | Report abuse

a starter vs. crying jet lagged babies? i can't belee i'm asking

Posted by: littery | August 18, 2007 9:48 PM | Report abuse

As long as the elbow isn't broken (and it isn't) I'd guess a month tops for Marcus. If nothing else happens, this is survivable.

Posted by: Cosmic Cheek | August 18, 2007 9:49 PM | Report abuse

Now, Espy is laid out on the damn field. Will it ever end????

Posted by: JustMe | August 18, 2007 9:49 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: cload and daggar | August 18, 2007 9:50 PM | Report abuse

He slipped on the field when he was making his break. He's getting up now. He's being carried off the field. Not walking, but not on a cart, either.

Posted by: JustMe | August 18, 2007 9:51 PM | Report abuse

Then don't leave, Littery!

Posted by: Cindy | August 18, 2007 9:51 PM | Report abuse

We didn't run the ball great but it is the Steelers so that's not surprising. Blalock looked pretty good to me too, I think he makes the team now for sure. I still hope we sign or trade for a guard, but Pucillo has looked pretty darn good against a very legit/lethal defense. I'm fairly shocked.

Posted by: Jack | August 18, 2007 9:51 PM | Report abuse

We need some of Bonds's flaxseed oil for Washington's elbow.

Time for me to head out for the night.

Please, God, no more injuries...

I'm still troubled by the absence of the vertical passing game.

Posted by: jm220 | August 18, 2007 9:55 PM | Report abuse

Alright gang, my cold is kicking my azz and the couch is calling me...had fun hangin!

Posted by: chris larry | August 18, 2007 9:55 PM | Report abuse

They got a couple deep to Cooley, but I didn't expect much vertical with Collins in there, but Todd has looked great to me, hopefully this means we can officially close the book for good on Mark chuck and duck Brunel......please!

Posted by: Jack | August 18, 2007 9:56 PM | Report abuse

We'll never make 100k if you all bail in the third quarter. :)

Posted by: Cindy | August 18, 2007 9:56 PM | Report abuse

So if JC is on the sideline with an ice bag on his knee, why is Collins still in the game with the 2nd stringers? Isn't he the man now? Should get #8 and even the kid to turn and hand it to ?

I think he's gonna be decent. It's at least nice to know that he can kick a long FG, remember with Hall he couldn't kick anything past like 40 yards, Novak either.

Carter's helmet came off on that play where he almost sacked big Ben, looked like #7's heel hit him in the mouth. So do we think JC is OK? That was extremely frightening.

Posted by: Jack | August 18, 2007 10:11 PM | Report abuse

Jack that's what I was trying to say last week. It was only 1 pre season game and we should wait until this week to see how they look. (well in my case hear how they are playing) Only if we could Jack. Only if we could.

Cornelius Griffin, who was rested last weekend, played sparingly last night, used primarily in the nickel package and inside the red zone.

Marshall beat deep. Shocking!!!!
Anyway, do we have an estimate yet on what Washington's recovery time will be? I dislocated my shoulder in high school and it was 8 weeks before I could play again and I had no fractures or tears either. I know an elbow is a lot better than a shoulder but still I gotta think he's gonna miss some significant time.

14 - 2, lol, doubt that. A healthy CP, makes a difference, that I was factoring into my 9 - 7 happiness, don't forget how good both the Eagles and Cowboys looked. A healthy Mcnabb and Westbrook means the Eagles are one of the best teams in the NFC. We've got a tough division and getting the Bears, and Pats, doesn't help either.

Who in Hades is #14? Nice effort to try to get the 1st down, but what was he thinking about sticking the ball out like that?

Posted by: JustMe | August 18, 2007 10:30 PM | Report abuse

guys, i'm getting the steelers SB year feeling about this season. all JC gotta do is 14-20 205 1 TD 0 INT per game. D is looking yummy good.

thanks cindy! .....ummmmm for being you!

jack, i'm not a dellusionist. i'm a double G guy. i believe in double G's D and st. Joe's ability to work with people.

what i'm worried about is weird Al. he scares the crap out of me. i will never be comfortable as long as he's calling the plays.

Posted by: littery | August 18, 2007 10:38 PM | Report abuse

You mean when brunel loses this game for us right?

I don't care what the final score is, except for the injuries, this night couldn't have gone better. Our line held up against one of the top D's in the league, and our D shutdown and 1st string offense that put up 305 yards in the first half last week.

Okay, negatives.

Still not scoring many points. Still not getting the ball downfield (longest play was 30-something to Yoder). Betts got nothin'. Injuries out the whazoo.

But, the D is really motoring.

I'm just gonna say the same thing ya'll said to me last week, one week doesn't define a team. They are probably not as good as they looked tonight, and they are definitely not as bad as they looked last week. They are somewhere in between. But tonight was a GREAT night.

Posted by: philoneaus | August 18, 2007 10:46 PM | Report abuse

can we please just cut brunel? he is the worst QB in the league, I gotta think Palmer would hold a clipboard just as good as he will and actually might be something later on, Mark is done!!!!! It's pretty standard procedure for the writers in the field to update editors throughout games. Mostly, it's just touching base, since almost everything is on the interweb or tv.
It makes life a little easier for him if I just post, then. That way, he can keep watching the game.

I actually like the fact that Brunello has played himself out of the #2 spot to #3 at least we won't have to fear if JC messes up, Gibbs is going to put Brunell in. It's clear who the backup should be.

Ugh, I grimace to live in Indiana at times like these. Sounds like we've had an exciting game (I'm finally listening to it online-- thanks for pointing me there, whoever that was!)

Posted by: Rusty | August 18, 2007 11:15 PM | Report abuse

That's my point. Brunel is a like 98 year veteran, he's gotta know that he took to long running around with no time outs so the play has got to go to the sidelines or the end zone, not a 15 yard pass to the middle of the field. He outta know better, that's Brunel at his best, he can't even make the smart plays that he out to be able to at 50 years old, who cares even if the guy had caught it game over.

Look, we punched the Steelers in the mouth. They thought they were gonna come into our house and beat us.

And they didn't. So what if their third-team can get some field goals?

We won tonight.

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | August 18, 2007 11:20 PM | Report abuse

Alright, let's reflect. Yes, it's a preseason game. Yes, we're mostly Brunnell haters (face it, the guy isn't good for much more than screen passes and short routes, not to mention that he makes Drew Bledsoe look like Michael Vick).

But this game should've answered a lot of questions for us! The D-- solid as heck, I think that we have the makings of a top 10 D a la 2004 again.

Still some ?s on the O-Line and offensive production, but overall a more solid performance tonight I think. We should be glad! I'd be bummed if it were a regular season game, but for a preseason game we really shined out there going toe to toe with the Steelers and preventing them from scoring a touchdown.

As Sam Huff pointed out, the last time that the Skins denied their opponents from scoring a touchdown in back-to-back preseason games was in 1993. This is a good thing.

HAIL.

Go ahead and hate Brunell, but remember that Collins would've been sacked on that play.
I'm glad that Collins played pretty well, but if you're looking for a backup for JC, then Brunell is going to be a better fit. Collins knows how to run the offense, but doesn't have the mobility that the others have.
At least that's a better theory than the "I owe my life to Mark" shabingus...

Jason Campbell was 6 for 8 for 75 yards with a passer rating of 103.6.

Todd Collins was 7 for 9 for 34 yards with a passer rating of 119.4.

HAHAHAHAHA.....that is a 5-11 team if i have ever seen it. NO depth anywhere, wait til there are a few key injuries and it is OVER. That is what happens when you only have 1-2 contributing draft picks every year and sign a bunch of old has-beens. I love some of the comments on here like the 10-6 prediction or the "same feeling as the steelers sb year" or especially the "sign priest holmes and make him a WR" one, all were classic 5-year old's logic right there(or dan snyder/joe gibbs/vinny cerrato logic)
If you wanted to see a contender you should have watched me and my team the Cowboys, stomp denver tonight. We completely dominated a very good team in every phase of the game and with each of our 1st, 2nd and 3rd string units playing very well. Only 2 penalties and 4/4 in red zone chances. The type of showing that means something, not like pulling out a 14-13 preseason win with your 3rd and 4th teamers scoring the winning points(i.e redskins vs titans)

Cowboys fans buy your plane tickets to Arizona right now cause we're gonna be there in february!!!!

I don't buy 5 - 11, but that is also why I don't think we are serious contenders yet, were a good draft away from being a legit team, but we're a lot closer than I thought. Again 9 - 7 or 8 - 8 is likely, if nobody gets hurt and washington gets back 10 - 6 is an outside possiblity.

Can Romo complete a pass more than 7 yards deep? He's got like 15 completeions for 80 total yards this preseason. Dink and Dunk is pussy ball.
Tonight, Green Bay won big against Seatle, a team that almost went to the superbowl last year.(totally dominated them in every phase of the game)
I guess Green Bay is the team to beat in the NFC this year.

Posted by: LH | August 18, 2007 11:55 PM | Report abuse

recall that the defense last year was -16 on turnovers over the longer-term GG average -- and GG isn't the king of turnover football.
They have improved on D and special teams in terms of speed.

Think of the problems a QB/OL has to deal with when you've got Sean, Laron, Rocky, and Marcus shifting around the line on a 3rd down play.

lo ho, jm220's been on double g's case. i was tellin him he should take back what he said about him as a coach. cuz clearly he can COACH. he did NOT have NFL players on the field. NOT HIS FAULT that his starting safety was lost (#20) on the first play of the year. marcus was hurt. his best D lineman was gone most of the year Griff. his best corner was hurt #24.

what did you want him to do last year?

Most guys in the NFL can coach when they have talent. Great coaches - JJG for example - can coach when they have less than great talent. AHCD has never coached up a less than stellar talent. He had great players in Tennessee. In Buffalo his Ds were SJKy. AHCD is not a great coach in my opinion. He just has better players this year that's all I was saying genius.

Finally got around to checking out the SJK. Thanks JustMe and Nate. I think I woke up my roommate LMGO on that one. I have always (and proudly) reserved my swearing to acronyms on the blog. I will now use SJK to replace and choice words that may be needed and will obligingly SJK afterwards.

So about that game... who knew Todd Collins and BLloyd would be the stars of the game. I promise to be more involved. SJK summer vacation. Thank God for SJKen football season. SJK

Did I do it right?

lh, dude. i know what you mean about talent. but the skins had like 4th stringers on their D. they didn't have NFL players last year. because of their scouting department and salary cap issues.

BUT if that's what you think of him then i can't change your mind. all i know is there's a lot of coaches in the NFL with good talent that can't produce. i'd never want him as a headcoach but he's a good D coach. and give him credit for letting go of lindsay. and what other coach can coach a talentless team to a top 5 D in the league?

This is the last thing I'll say about AHCD. When he, Blache and Lindsey got here, he said they were going to break down the "star system" and that he could make it work with ordinary guys so long as they played the scheme. He started bringing in his guys - Holdman for instance. They could not play and the defense's ranking fell each of the last two years. The good players who left, believe me if he wanted to keep them they would have been here. If he isn't responsible for that who else is?

lh, you have a point regarding AP and ryan clark. but i forgive, just like in spurrier years, all the personnel mistakes because of the lack of a GM. coaches coach. GM's pick players.

all the GM would've seen was (purely being an armchair GM) that AP makes the D and Ryan Clark is a good cheap safety to go along with a BEAST. why would any good GM LET his coach give the highest contract to a safety when he could've just kept his safeties in tact? and same goes with AP. "keep your players cuz they're cheaper and you know what you got in 'em".

As for the daddio problemos, i hear you on the forgiveness deal, i really do. in a weird way, i feel like i have accepted and forgiven him for his horrible parenting and short fuse, but it's still hard to get past the after-effects of his failings (like anxiety and self-esteem stuff). I'm relatively new to really getting real about everything, but it's so tough to get past the hurt of the betrayal, you know? i'm moving along, but it's still tough.

ahh yes, the after effects. bad stuff cuz it's not like you can go back to change things. cuz the shti is back in time. the only thing you can do is to forgive but that doesn't alleviate anxiety and such because that shti is at the subconscious level. so for that either you go chemical or CBT.

and it's easier to say CBT but it is SOOO hard to find someone to connect to.

Just watched the game on the TiVo just now - got in a bit too late to watch the game live. My overall impression? I'm starting to feel a bit better about the team. I'm not screaming to the rafters just yet, but after last week's lackluster play, seeing the machine on both sides of the line start to work is a bit more heartening. (Though I just about had a heart attack when JC went down - I'm glad he's ambulatory. Washington's injury didn't help, but Espy's season-ender was somewhat disheartening - he's been my second favorite underdog in camp this year.) The patchwork line is starting to gel a bit, especially considering the team on the other side of the ball.

And Collins, even if he's a pillar of salt in the maneuverability category, seems to be a worthy possibility as a #2. He may play like an old guy, but at least he's a rested old guy. Had decent zip on the ball, even if he had a few errant ones, and at least showed some willingness to tough it out and stand up for the throw. Brunell was just downright spotty tonight, and that was against the 3rd and 4th string defenses tonight. Sorry, Mark, but the clock timer just went 'ding' on you - it's time to take you out of the oven and carve you up, turkey.

The defense, however - we definitely have some high-motor guys in at linebacker! The line was showing some decent penetration, especially up the middle, which was sorely missing much of the season last year. The corners came to play, and even if they weren't perfect, they got the job done. Those goal-line stands were tremendously heartening to watch.

Can't say enough about Mac The Knife. He must have been picking up some tips from LoFleBaker, because he was just saying hello to whomever had the ball all too frequently tonight! I'm beginning to wonder if Mac wasn't putting enough effort in as he did this season, or if it was a matter of Dale Lindsay just being something worth a few SJK-level words and just not trying to work with him. Pity the wasted year with the man. How Can't Getta Holdmann was considered a better choice leaves me utterly dumbfounded.

This is one night I'm willing to bear witness to a loss, just to know the team's starting to pull it together. Just wish the injuries didn't happen, though...

I hate not being able to sleep on a drop of a hat....

As to the Assistant Deity - Defense, I'll just put my two cents in, welcome or unwelcome as they might be. Not to cause insult or injury, littery, but I'm with LH on Greggilligan, as far as last year was concerned. As I said during most of the season on the blog last year, I think he and some of his coaching staff were guilty of a level of hubris that caused much of the problems we saw. The "It's All In The" system that he was using last year was some sort of attempt to punch his ticket back into a head coaching job somewhere, and it bit the team in the rear. All sorts of players were in the wrong place, confused and unsure of what they were doing, thanks to the particularly high number of rules and regulations in that system. Some players were affected by this more than others - Carlos Rogers, Lemar Marshall and Sean Taylor being some big examples of it. Much of that indeed has to go on ADD's head in that regard.

That said, if the performance so far in preseason is any indication, I'm willing to forgive Gregg for his foibles. Apparently, he's eaten his crow, and the simpler system he put in place of last year's magnus opi of shabingii seems to be working a bit better. Hopefully, the change in heart and the addition of high-motor personnel like LoFleBaker will do nothing but good for the team in the coming season.

Posted by: FlimFlam | August 19, 2007 3:57 AM | Report abuse

I realize he's already won a Super Bowl, but seriously would you rather have JC or Rothlesburger as your QB? Physically they're equal, and I believe JC has better leadership qualities and character. Rothlesburger was surrounded by a great team with a legend as a coach and wasn't asked to do too much in their system. For that matter I'd take JC over Romo, Leftwich, Delhomme, E. Manning, Pennington, Tavares Jackson, Damon Huard, Simms, Harrington, Carr. I'd put JC on the same level of potential as Alex Smith, Jay Cutler, and Leinart, because their physical skills are roughly equal, but JC's attitude, character, and commitment to improvement will separate him from the rest. His focus and demeanor have been undaunted since his Auburn days, and if it weren't for those unreal 2001-2004 USC teams he'd have been rewarded with a National Championship his Senior year.
As long as the Dan doesn't screw this up, we've got a qb for the next 10-12 years.

This team is OLD & BROKEN DOWN,I cant remember a yr where INJURIES to players was the MAIN topic! If this coaching staff was able to fill this roeter with young TALENTED players we wouldnt be talking about this! Injuries to starting QBs is one thing but the list here of concern RB,LT,G,WR,DL,LB,CB is pathetic! This team is a 5-11 team because INJURIES are a part of this game and have been since F agency began and the teams who arent prepared are LOSERSssssss!

Jasno, did you accidentally omit the word not from the last part of the sentence (i.e. he did NOT think the shot was intentional), or did JC think Keisel was trying to Carson Palmer him a la Timo Von Olhaffen 2 years ago in Cincy?

Adam

PS MW injury does not sound good. Better elbow than shoulder (rotator cuff tear and you're probably out for the year), but 2 weeks sounds like pretty aggressive/wishful thinking. I'm guessing 4 weeks.

Nice comparison - Quinn to Campbell. I mean, are you beng serious, or do you realize how stupid that comparison is?? Speak of JC - Kiesel should be fined/suspended. We're lucky this didn't end the same way it did for Carson Palmer a couple yrs ago. Cheap shot any way you slice it. As for M. Washington - I'm guessing Week 4 return....

Cyndy,

Please fact check this JLC quote in paragraph 11 of "Redskins escape with a bruise":

"Keisel was penalized for a personal foul and later apologized to Campbell, who said he did think the shot at his knees was intentional."

I watched the post-game interview with Soups and am pretty sure he said that he thought the Keisel shot was unintentional. Dunno. Maybe Soups changed his mind or I had one too many glasses of grape.

No question that was a cheap shot. BQ played in the 4 qt against people that won't make the team. Bust period!!! Go back and look at the tapes of him when ND wasn't playing Air Force, Army, Navy, and you will see it yourself. Bust!!

I'm putting the Skins down for 8-8 this year.

D looks a lot better. LFB and RockyMac will transform the LB corps from a weakness to a strength and LL and ST look like they play pretty well together. Still think the DLine is average at best and the overall corner coverage skills are suspect, but think Double G will do better this year coming up with ways to hide these weaknesses.

O still seems shaky. Getting Samuels and Thomas back will definitely help the line, but JC's a young QB who is going to be learning on the job and except for Santana, the WR corps stinks.

Think the Skins will be in the playoff hunt throughout the season because of the D, but fall just short of a WC as the Iggles and the Boys advance out of the NFC East. On the upside for Skins fans, Skins should be able to build around the young talent they've picked up to be a playoff caliber team in 2008 and beyond, especially after they trim some deadwood next off season (bye bye MB and BL)

jm220 - didn't see the game (dinner at Farrah Olivia in Old Town with my girlfriend; highly recommend the restaurant). Did Keisel dive straight for the knee or was he pushed/in the process of disengaging from a block and lunging for JC?

Adam an early morning smack to the back of your damn head for your Skins comment. lol

Remember I am in Dirty Jerz. From the replay on ESPN looks like he went straight for the knee. Big time cheap shot.

Also McNabb walked a little shakey on his bad knee.

jm220 - no worries about the smack, it's probably going to be far more benign than some of the other abuse I get for the 8-8 post. still, I'm sticking to my statements, guess we'll see how the year plays out.

As for D-Mac's knee, most orthopedists say it takes 2 years for that injury to fully heal (i.e. return to ~100% of what it was pre-injury). His knee isn't going to be healthy the entire season. The question is can he play effectively throughout the season despite knee issues. Based on recent history, I have an ugly feeling I'll be seeing way too much A.J. (Touchy Mc)Feely this season.

Ugh.

And as someone else mentioned about the knee shot, once is an accident, twice or more seems like a pattern. Wonder exactly what the Steelers dline coaches are teaching about getting to the QB.

I didn't get to see any of the game last night and was completely dejected for a good hour or so after one of my boys watching the game called to tell me about Campbell. I'll check the replay this afternoon. Anyway, if some of the stuff I read on here about the D flying around and looking more like 2 years ago than last year I think we will have a shot at the playoffs. The NFC is weak and are schedule is pretty friendly early on. But these injuries are really making me nervous being we are a team with no depth. There are multiple positions where if we lose guys, its a season breaker. (QB, OL, Moss.)

Adam - I'm with you on the aggressive 2 week thing with Marcus. If you have to sit him so it doesn't linger like Portis last year you do it. Lemar Marshall can fill in for a week or 2 if need be.

Good morning....

My overall impressions:

1) JC -- looked great. Love the long ball. Made some great passes. I'd be shocked if it isn't an MCL sprain, which is far better than ACL tear. Will probably need a couple weeks rest.

2) I'm a MB hater. Don't think he played particularly well (not all his fault but some better throws might have "won" the game for us). But I have to say that his arm looked livelier than last year, not that that's saying much. I think TC should be #2

3) I didn't like the Landry pick (thought we needed Dline help -- and I think we do). But I was WRONG! He is going to be a great addition and an immediate impact player. Front office looks to have made the right choice there, at least for now.

4) The D looks really good. On the worried side of me, I thought the DB's were very suspect last week. Still want to see more before I make final judgement but think that they played better this week than last.

5) Oline - played better than last week. Still looks like they need to get it figured out for the running game which was lacking again. Seems like we have slow starts (over the course of a season) with the running game and don't know why it takes 10 weeks to get it right. Should be our bread and butter. Is it the game calling? The blocking scheme? The personnel gelling? The backs improving?

Overall, much to be excited about I think. But cautiously so....

I would guess this is a completely different DL coaching staff for Pitt under Tomlin than it was under Cowher but I have no knowledge on that.

Posted by: cdubb | August 19, 2007 10:14 AM | Report abuse

Oh, and how could I forget to mention Rocky Mac! What a beast! Where was he last year? Can't be that he improved THAT much over the offseason.

Our linebackers are solid and much better across the board, but we'll miss Marcus. Hopefully just 2-4 weeks, but no rush in the preseason, at all....

Posted by: CaroCanesFan | August 19, 2007 10:15 AM | Report abuse

MW injury got to be at least 4 weeks. No way should they try to rush that into a 2 weeks.

jm...did Pinkston get in the game last night?

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | August 19, 2007 10:36 AM | Report abuse

Well it looks like the media is crowning Brady Quinn as the next Joe Montana. One preseason game, 2 td passes. Who gives a SJK? I need to see some more highlights of him sitting at the draft like a d bag. I hate that guy. Sunday morning rant, sorry.

Posted by: cdubb | August 19, 2007 10:42 AM | Report abuse

cdubb I am with you on that one. Not like he played against guys that are going to make the team. They will getting blown out when he came in the game.

SCSkinsFan I don't remember them calling his name.

The ESPN Sports Reporters just ripped the Redskins organization today..."Dan Snyder has been the utter demise of a once proud franchise, and they're going nowhere."

Posted by: sicwidit | August 19, 2007 11:05 AM | Report abuse

We know that the "D" played great, but to me it seems as if they all know where they're supposed to be and they actually look excited about swarming to the ball which was absent last year. I'm more concerned with the running game than the pass protection. If we have last year's running game and this defense, then I think we will surprise a lot of people...Oh, by the way Mel Kiper Jr. picked the Redskins to win the division!!!

JC is 12-22 179yds 3 fumbles 0 pts 3rd season! saying B QUINN who was late signing and been in camp a couple of weeks was playing against scrubs so disregard his ability which is better then JC is just one more reason for you to keep your idiotic opinions to yourself!

What did BQ do to you guys that you "hate" him? How can one build up such a level of animus against someone you never met? Let me guess: He played for ND and was built up by the media as a better player than he actually is.

Yes he played in the fourth qtr against guys who likely won't make the roster but he was playing with guys in the same situation. What did he do? He played like he was a couple of levels above the competition and raised the level of the play of his teammates. He's no Ryan Leaf. Don't let your dislike cloud your judgment.

I'm very indifferent toward ND players. Quinn just always comes across as a popmous ahole in his interviews. I base my judgement of his play on the games that meant something in college. Bowl games, USC, Michigan...he lost most of those and padded his stats against mediocre programs. His last college game where Jamarcus Russell completely outshined him was the capper. IMO he'll be closer to Rick Mirer than he will Joe Montana. Apparently people in the league have questions since he slid all the way to the 20s in the draft. But wait, I am gonna hold out till I get paid like a top 3 pick. The embarrassment in April taught him nothing.

cdubb you are right on the money. Navy, Air Force, Army, Duke. Please tell me when was the last time any of those schools were good in football.

To the Quinn doubters, name one offensive skill position player from ND that got drafted in the first three rounds of the NFL draft. His top receiver, Jeff Samardzija, a Biletnikoff finalist, is playing baseball as a pro. Go back and look at the LSU game, the LSU players were 2x as fast the ND players. What was the guy supposed to do? Football is the ultimate team game and ND's failures against better opponents was not his fault.
