Weigh in on Hall

The Skins head back to work tomorrow, as Dallas week officially begins. Can't decide which games to watch; while we have the Sunday ticket, I'm hampered somewhat by the fact that my clicker does not work. Anyone wanna come in and switch between games for me?

The only article the Post has on the Hall acquisition is: "Popular Cornerback Torrence Gets Waived"

What a joke -- I have to assume he was one of the last players still talking to JLC...

I am gonna say, he wants to have an impact game 1. so thats my vote.

MORE RAIDERS WANT OUT
Posted by Mike Florio on November 9, 2008, 12:45 p.m. EST

Though some Raiders players might be glad that cornerback DeAngelo Hall is gone, others apparently envy him.

Per Adam Schefter of NFL.com, there are “many” players who would like to leave the organization. Safety Gibril Wilson, who signed a big-money deal in the offseason, is reportedly one of them.

Writes Schefter: “It has gotten so bleak that, just this past week, at least one prominent player actually considered quitting, taking a leave of absence, just because he feels like he cannot take it anymore. He wound up not doing it, but chances are he is hardly the only Raider thinking it.”

Wow.

It remains to be seen whether the Raiders can turn this thing around. If not, the only players they’ll be able to sign are the ones that no other team wants.

Fire Cerrato because
1)He sounds like a Hyena when he laughs on radio
2)He has no mind of his own and I dont think he ever scouts anyone.. hence the available time to do radio and tv shows. He is more of a fan than a GM or VP of football operations.
3)All he does is tell the coaches who to get from their previous teams. His job should be to scout players who fit into the system and not just go by getting whoever the coaches suggest
4)He wants to make his draft choices look good this year and that is interfering with decisions to retain the right people needed for the team
5)I am positive he will be spending his sundays reading this column and tryin gto comment on negative media in his show tomorrow

Two Things:

1) I've said a thousand times: DeAngelo Hall isn't a "cancer". Are you tellng me that you could be happy in Oakland or on any shi**y job? And don't tell me that he was getting compensated very well--most of you would quit or slack off on a 50K a year job. So it's always not about the money.

Oakland > Happiness

2) Derrick Forst is terrible. The worst. God-awful. Good motherlovin' riddance.

Got Beeped.

That is the second time you have tried to play the LAME ASS Apples to Oranges upside comparison of Jason Campbell with 2 years v a CB with 2 years starting experience.

Are you seriously saying that is a valid comparison? Or is that just the strongest of your anemic arguments (in my view non-existent) you can come up with to some how validate your contention that cutting Torrence was not the obvious solution given ALL of the facts??

For the record, my answer is yeah, JC should continue to improve with experience under Zorn's tutelage. And yeah, I think we have clearly seen what Torrence is....and its not gonna get any better. In addition, we vehemently disagree on the quality of player Torrence is... you rate him significantly higher than I do. He made some ST tackles. Wow. Het gets burned in coverage more often than not, and fails to find the ball in the air...that is the common denominator in his Avery play, and failing to down balls on punt coverage. Most recent example is against the Steelers, and there are numerous others...he failed to look back for the ball as it tantalizingly and maddeningly trickles into the endzone when he fails to locate and adjust to the ball to make the play. That is his game in a microcosm...in the area to really make a key play, but Just Doesn't Quite Get It Done.

Obviously, niether of us is going to change the other's mind here. Fair enough.

Just heard Joe Buck say "Frost to punt...and its a line drive...gonna get a return here...Vikings set up in great field position after the 15 yard return". Thats why we kept Brooksie in the first place, and why the Packers would love to get a real punter on their roster.

Fair enough we'll agree to disagree. I'll leave you with this, though: Name me two instances this season in which Leigh Torrence was "burned". Please. I defy you. I'll even spot you one: the Donnie Avery play. I'll concede this argument if you can name me one more instance this season. Considering you claim to be taking in ALL of the "facts".

The upside of having no clicker and no Dorf is that, because I can't change channels easily (it's too time-consuming to go from 5 or 9 to 52...), the chances that I'll see a preview for the new Bond movie increase exponentially.

Turnovers & penalties. They are hard to overcome, even against a weak team. That fumble returned for a TD was a 10 point loss.

Watching this Minnesota game, as much as I love Clinton Portis, Adrian Peterson is definitely the best runner in the league. Portis is a better overall and all-around RB, but as a pure runner, nobody can match Peterson. If that team ever gets a QB and some good WRs, look out.

Posted by: rickyroge | November 9, 2008 3:54 PM

i agree with this statement. i think that portis is 1A and Peterson is 1B right now. there are somethings that portis is better at and vice versa. for one peterson is a better open field runner, portis is good but not as good. portis is a better blocker than peterson. both are great backs and are the best in the league. (I just saw peterson score a TD!)

Posted by: RedDMV | November 9, 2008 4:10 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: spizzle | November 9, 2008 3:45 PM |

Always risky to put anyone ahead of CP up here, but Peterson first lost the game with a fumble and then put it on his back and won it. I think that when Portis went with "I want to run behind the best line" a few of our linemen were thinking "I want Peterson to run behind us." Guy's got it.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | November 9, 2008 4:12 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Lisa_R | November 9, 2008 4:45 PM | Report abuse

Got to pull for the Giants, we don't want the Eagles and Cowboys tied with us. If we are going to win the division we have to beat the Giants straight up but we need the Eagles and Cowboys to keep losing.

Posted by: zjfr2 | November 9, 2008 4:54 PM | Report abuse

It's a tough call - the realist in me says to root for the Giants, to drive down all teams that could compete with the 'Skins for a Wild Card spot, but the dreamer wants the Giants to lose, to give us a shot at the East title...

Posted by: JohnDinHouston | November 9, 2008 4:54 PM | Report abuse

I'm going with the Giants.....they will most likely win the division anyway. And we can't have the Eagles catch up to us.

Posted by: Lisa_R | November 9, 2008 4:57 PM | Report abuse

The only result I don't want is a tie. Considering a win by either squad both helps and hurts us, I'm just hoping that both teams end up brutally beating on each other. Although I'll always have that dark side of me that wants to go for it all, so deep down I'll probably be hoping for a Philly win.

Posted by: spizzle | November 9, 2008 4:58 PM | Report abuse

We have to beat the giants to win the division, we need all other division opponents to lose period, and then hope a non-division team knocks them off and then we beat them as well, that's our only chance at the division but if the Eagles win they are tied with us and we're still one back of the division lead.

Posted by: zjfr2 | November 9, 2008 5:05 PM | Report abuse

If the Eagles win, all we have to do is beat the Giants and we'll be #1 in the division (and obviously take care of business with Dallas). We'll be in control of our own destiny if the Giants lose tonight.

We would be in control of our own destiny......but so would everybody else we still have to play everyone in the division one more time, if the eagles win they're tied with us and in control of their own destiny, if the Giants lose they still have a one game lead and control their own destiny and the Cowboys even pick up a game on the division lead as well. Its way to early for a "we control our own destiny" comment, there are still 7 games left we don't need anybody getting closer to us.

I think spizzle has a point here. If our goal is to WIN the division, we want to control our destiny, and we don't control it now. We need the Giants to lose a game, like the one tonight.

If our goal is a wild card, then yeah a Philly loss helps. So, what's our goal? Win the division or get a wild card?

Its not a mutually exclusive question, we can win the division without Philly winning tonight. I want to win the division, but I don't want the Eagles to be tied with us, the Giants still have plenty of other loseable games against Ari, Bal, Car, Min, and Dallas not to mention us, any of those is loseable and all of them are better than a Philly win. I hope the Giants win tonight, 7 games is a long time, we don't need anybody to pick up ground on us on our bye week.

See, BBM is doing to the Steelers exactly what the 'Skins should have done - little dink and dunk 4 yard passes - on the other hand, I don't know if we would have had the time for even that...

We did do that. The difference is that BBM is also throwing over the top, even if most of them aren't being completed. The Steelers aren't able to stack the LOS the way they did against us.

I wish that neither the Giants nor the Eagles would win.. it's a no-win situation either way.. if the Giants win, then our chances of winning the division are not as good but the Eagles would be far down the NFC East, if the Eagles win, then the Giants lead would be cut down but then the Eagles would be right behind us and very much in this race...this sucks (not to mention that i hate when the Eagles win because just thinking about Eagles fans being happy makes me so mad, I hate Eagles fans!)

if the eagles win they are tied with us, we hold the tiebreaker but we have to play again, and if they lose they and the cowgirls are only one game back of us, not exactly way down the list. I'll say it again, the Giants have plenty of loseable games, in fact the rest of their schedule is very tough, we need them to win tonight more than we need teams tied with us.

Which team would you trust to lose more down the stretch: the Giants or the Eagles? Every game the Giants win it becomes that much harder to catch them because, plain and simple, they're better than anybody else in our conference. The Eagles...not so much. I trust that the skins can out-win the Eagles down the stretch. I'm not worried about the Eagles catching up to us this weekend. Not one bit.

call me crazy, call me drunk, color me silly - all are at least partly true - but I think that as Skins fans we should root for Giants win tonight. Let's be honest - it's more likely that we are battling Philly for a woldcard spot than Giants for the division title. Surely some good comes from either team losing and I'm not conceding the division in Week 10, but I think realistically our hopes are more likely for a wildcard.

Then you obviously don't realize the Eagles schedule is just as easy as our's and that Westbrook is healthy and after not a great start they've won 3 in a row, have one of the best defenses in the league and have won the division for most of the decade. Can someone explain intentional grounding?

Posted by: rachel216

On the particular play you were probably watching, it wasn't intentional grounding because there was a TE in the area where Manning threw the ball in the ground.

If he is in the pocket, is under immediate pressure, throws the ball away in an attempt to avoid a sack, and there is no receiver in the area that the ball was thrown, then it would be intentional grounding.

Posted by: spizzle | November 9, 2008 9:41 PM | Report abuse

If the QB is in the pocket, he can't throw the ball away to avoid a sack. There has to be a reciever in the vicinity of where he throws it.

If he's outside the pocket he can throw it away as long as he throws it towards the line of scrimmage.

There may be more to it but that's the jist.

Horrible coaching by Andy Reid. First of all, stupid challenge on the first fumble. It wasn't even remotely close. Wasted time-out, no chance of catching a break.

Second, trying to run it for the first down twice in a row. Gotta agree with Madden there--Philly's not a power rushing team, let McNabb throw it or even roll out and have the option to run.

Pathetic play calling. I hope they suck it up as bad when we play them.

A Philly loss is good for the 'Skins. Speaking realistically, the Skins are not going to win the division so Dallas and Philly losses are to the 'Skins' advantage. Skins just have to beat 'em too when they play 'em.

Skins are going to have to start scoring some points.

Posted by: learnedhand1 | November 9, 2008 11:52 PM | Report abuse

C'mon learnedhand, giving up on winning the division already? We play the Gints at home--a very possible loss for the Gints. They also play Philly again, play in Dallas, play Carolina, and finish the season playing in Minnesota.

Meanwhile, the only tought games we have left are our 3 division games. But all 3 are at home. So, while I wouldn't bet large amounts of money on it, there is a decent chance we can win the division.

It's hard to know how soon he will help this team. The biggest thing is how will he fit in on this team. Will he buy into what they are doing or will he be an individual like he has in the past. If he comes in and plays hard and keeps his mouth shut then maybe he can turn his career around. This is one of those moves that will either pay off or blow up the team. I will be positive based on the fact this is probably his last stop and, I'm sure he knows he is on a winning team.

Yes practice does make perfect and jc, jz didn't do so well last time. I'm more concerned for jz than jc. No qb can win without pp and a run game. Jz needs to go back to football, what brought him to 6 wins in 8 games.

I don't think he could blow up the team, the team might blow him up though. But I doubt that will happen. He'll come in and do his part, which I hope means returns some punts early on and show the coaches and his team mates he's a shut down corner.

Posted by: _Stumped_1 | November 10, 2008 1:01 AM | Report abuse

I don't think there's a realistic chance of the 'Skins winning the division.

The Wild Card picture is getting crowded. The 'Skins control their own destiny at this point, and I'm going to go out on a limb and say 11-5 will be the cutoff point this year for the first Wild Card. I love the way Atlanta is playing, and their rookie QB is playing out of his mind right now. Both Atlanta and Tampa Bay are 6-3 as well, and all three of the 6-3 NFC teams have brutal schedules (after St. Louis, I hesitate to call Cincinnati, Seattle, and San Francisco pancakes for the 'Skins).

This upcoming game is a must-win for the Cowboys. I hope the 'Skins show up on national TV, or they'll get spanked once more. In recent memory (with the exception of that legendary Brunell/Moss vs. the Cowboys game), their track record in doing so is abysmal.

The division although a possibility seems to be less and less likely. First, the 'skins have to beat Dallas at night which seems to be when they play their worst. Then the fact that the Giants one loss is out of the conference gives the Giants the tie-breaker + the two games they're up. Even if the 'skins do beat the Giants, they'll need help to get the division title. The wild-card would be very respectable considering the competiton between the east and south.
