A Weird Day at Ford Field

This is an odd game-day experience. Ford Field is about 10 percent filled a half-hour before kickoff, and given the location of the stadium, people aren't tailgating. It's not an option here.

And the game isn't on TV - it's blacked out locally with so many seats still available - and I just met some friends on the concourse, and it isn't like legions of people are milling around there.

Also, it's the first time I've ever walked around an NFL stadium and not seen a single person wearing the jersey of the starting QB. Did not spot a single Orlovsky jersey. I wouldn't buy one either, but I'm just saying.

There's not much media here - the Detroit media has seen this movie before and with the Lions 1-13 in their last 14, the demand for Lions news isn't that high. So the press box is pretty empty. Not like a ton of national media is gonna flock here for this one, either.

And there is a heavy contingent of Skins fans here, given the abundance of tickets, failing Michigan economy and relatively inexpensive means of getting to Detroit. Just kind of feels like a preseason game.

As for the Lions, four starters are inactive - T George Foster, TE Michael Gaines, CB Travis Fisher, and S Dwight Smith. Also for the Skins, Chris Samuels's streak of 73 straight starts was snapped because of his injury.

Maybe this will be the Skins FIRST blowout of the season.

A throwback score to the 1st game of the 1991 Superbowl Season. It may be in Detroit rather than RFK, but the score is vintage 1991:

Redskins 45
Detroit 0

Don't know anything about Dewayne White #99, DE. But he is concerning me. Stephon Heyer hasn't played LT since 2007 preseason, as far as I can remember.

Posted by: frediefritz | October 26, 2008 1:02 PM | Report abuse

That's what I am talking about. Make it quick and take them out.

The game just sounds so...quiet...

Posted by: suzannepdc | October 26, 2008 1:07 PM | Report abuse

Already in the Red Zone

Posted by: mattsoundworld | October 26, 2008 1:07 PM | Report abuse

Get CP his 120 first half and let him sit the rest of the game.

I smell a Portis TD

Posted by: mattsoundworld | October 26, 2008 1:08 PM | Report abuse

And there went that drive

Posted by: mattsoundworld | October 26, 2008 1:10 PM | Report abuse

er.. was that a play action qb option run? kay.

Posted by: alex35332 | October 26, 2008 1:10 PM | Report abuse

We got to do better in the red zone. Put 7 on the board and take their heart early.

Posted by: icetotalpackage | October 26, 2008 1:10 PM | Report abuse

Im calling a reverse to Davis from the 8 yard line... money

Posted by: mattsoundworld | October 26, 2008 1:11 PM | Report abuse

Need a Cooley TD. Just need to run that route he killed teams with last year, where he comes to a dead stop at the goal line. No matter how many times the Lions have seen it I doubt they can solve it.

Posted by: skins1110 | October 26, 2008 1:11 PM | Report abuse

Haha yeah or Fred Davis reverse. That play is money

Posted by: skins1110 | October 26, 2008 1:12 PM | Report abuse

santonio moss... thanks brian

Posted by: alex35332 | October 26, 2008 1:12 PM | Report abuse

Did not like that goal line series one bit

Posted by: skins1110 | October 26, 2008 1:12 PM | Report abuse

Should have just went with CP from the 1. Not good play calling on that one.

Posted by: icetotalpackage | October 26, 2008 1:14 PM | Report abuse

3 points are 3 points. go skins go

Posted by: alex35332 | October 26, 2008 1:14 PM | Report abuse

Im followin the game on NFL.com... what was the call on 1st n 1?

Posted by: mattsoundworld | October 26, 2008 1:14 PM | Report abuse

looked like a missed handoff on 1st down... don't like the second down call.
Good idea on 3rd, would've been nice to get it in.

Posted by: daggar | October 26, 2008 1:15 PM | Report abuse

so long as the D is here playing I am not worried about 1 drive with a FG. You know its the worst broadcast guys when the game is blackouted.

Posted by: alex35332 | October 26, 2008 1:16 PM | Report abuse

Having JAson Campbell attempt to run it in was not smart. That's how you get your QB hurt. I thinkt he shovel pass was a good idea but we were just a bit too far away from the endzone to do that. Stephon Heyer is having big trouble with the run blocking and has already got burnt once on a passing play.

Posted by: Thundershock | October 26, 2008 1:16 PM | Report abuse

I would be pissed if a run wasnt called, but I guess if you botch it, you cant blame the playcalling I suppose.

Oh what the hell! THAT PLAY SUCKED!! Heh heh

Posted by: mattsoundworld | October 26, 2008 1:16 PM | Report abuse

it looked like a straight run outside LT with Sellars in the lead, looked to me like CP was too fast and JC didn't want to risk a late handoff... he kept the ball for a two yard loss.

Posted by: daggar | October 26, 2008 1:17 PM | Report abuse

1st & 1 was a run where JC faked a hand off and tried getitng in going wide.

Posted by: alex35332 | October 26, 2008 1:17 PM | Report abuse

Im followin the game on NFL.com... what was the call on 1st n 1?

Posted by: mattsoundworld | October 26, 2008 1:14 PM | Report abuse
CP off LT, but JC missed the handoff.

Posted by: frediefritz | October 26, 2008 1:18 PM | Report abuse

Zorn must go!!! :0)

Posted by: Schroeder12 | October 26, 2008 1:18 PM | Report abuse

Not sure what you are watching Thundershock. Sunny said that first 17 yard run that Heyer open up a big hole.

Posted by: icetotalpackage | October 26, 2008 1:18 PM | Report abuse

Suisham only gets it to the 11?!? And I laughed at that girl who predicted swirling winds inside Ford Field...

Zorn must stay!!!

Posted by: Schroeder12 | October 26, 2008 1:22 PM | Report abuse

green made a nice, Hortonesque play on 2nd.

That was not a sack, that was a bad QB.

Posted by: daggar | October 26, 2008 1:22 PM | Report abuse

Reminded me of a sack one gets playing madden on rookie mode.

Devin Thomis with the 1st down

Posted by: alex35332 | October 26, 2008 1:25 PM | Report abuse

Not really. DE White rushed wide, was never touched, just ran himself out of the play. Heyer held his position on the DT.

Posted by: frediefritz | October 26, 2008 1:25 PM | Report abuse

Ice, Heyer had a good block on that run but there were numerous other times where his blocking was subpar.

Posted by: Thundershock | October 26, 2008 1:25 PM | Report abuse

Uh oh. Number 11!

Posted by: skins1110 | October 26, 2008 1:25 PM | Report abuse

'D' Green... LMAO JM... doesn't 'Green #25' look wrong??

Nooooo so much for the perfect season. Though still no Int for JC

Posted by: alex35332 | October 26, 2008 1:28 PM | Report abuse

Dont worry, Thundershock. If they get too uppity on that left side, they'll just feed them plenty O' Portis

Posted by: mattsoundworld | October 26, 2008 1:29 PM | Report abuse

Zorn must go!!

Posted by: Schroeder12 | October 26, 2008 1:29 PM | Report abuse

suzannepdc: You read my mind. I hope this isn't going to be Yams 2.0

Posted by: mohammed10 | October 26, 2008 1:29 PM | Report abuse

Not of course if JC develops fumblitis again

Posted by: mattsoundworld | October 26, 2008 1:30 PM | Report abuse

They had to turn off some of the 'extras' at Ford Field... no first down line, plastic football, everything that a decent High School team can afford.

Posted by: daggar | October 26, 2008 1:30 PM | Report abuse

What the hack.

ESPN gamecast is no subsitute for real tv (FAUX is showing the girls-Tampa Bay here).

Posted by: mohammed10 | October 26, 2008 1:36 PM | Report abuse

Rock Cartwright needs to stop with this return from the middle of the end zone BS-take a knee and stop trying to do too much, thats not the kind of returner he is, also-when youve got 1st and goal on the 3 yrd line-just run it up the gut to portis

What the hell is this crap? Another half a$$ effort it looks like just like the Rams game. What is with all of these wuss bags not suiting up? This team is not good enough to sit their stars and get top end results.

Posted by: cocodc1 | October 26, 2008 1:46 PM | Report abuse

Jason not to call you out for somethin small, but Orlovsky is not your typical starting QB. You have to realize he is essentially an emergency injury replacement. If Campbell goes down tomorrow, would you make the same observation about a lack of Collins jerseys at FedEx? Think before you type.
