Welcome To Nashville

Hey there, hope all is well.

Clinton Portis has yet to see Dr. James Andrews down here. I am told it could happen during the game or even at halftime. Again, I don't think they will say anything new about the knee and will likely reiterate the feeling that the tendinitis is improving, but we shall see.

Vince Young is out for the game after violating team rules. Titans say he will return to practice this week. Kerry Collins get the start tonight.

Except for Portis, and the guys who didn't make the trip - Lloyd, Ecker, Manupuna, Samuels, Butler - everyone else is dressed. Betts, who had a stiff neck, is supposed to start and Sellers, who has his knee flare up this week, is supposed to play, too.

Other than that, not much going on. Destroyed some pre-game BBQ with Mike Wise down at Jack's on Broadway. With any luck I'll get down to Toosie's for a few cold ones and some live music after deadline, and that's about it.

Enjoy the game.

You said it SCSkinsFan. Maybe Fisher saw that clip when L2 hit the QB and the announcer say "oh that's just evil." LMGO

I just heard no Joe Thisman on MNF. Cindy, I think there is a free agent for you and the Post to go after.

Posted by: 35332 | August 11, 2007 7:34 PM | Report abuse

All I know is this: If I'm the coach of the Titans and my QB is on the cover of the Madden game, I find reasons to keep him out until Sept. 9.

Posted by: Cindy | August 11, 2007 7:35 PM | Report abuse

Play like Snyder and try and sign a big name.

Sorry I had to say it :-)

Posted by: 35332 | August 11, 2007 7:35 PM | Report abuse

What position does Vince Young play?

Posted by: Skip | August 11, 2007 7:35 PM | Report abuse

Not playing a preseason game is punishment?

Making that birdie was possibly the worst thing Ames could have done. He's not going to win so why put up with all that goes with playing with Tiger.

Joey T. What an unlikeable guy. Getting canned by MNF was the first time somebody said they didn't want him and it hurt. When his marriages ended it didn't hurt as bad because he left those situations.

Posted by: LH | August 11, 2007 7:37 PM | Report abuse

I wonder if Joe can write.....Maybe making deadline is just another version of the two-minute drill!

Posted by: Cindy | August 11, 2007 7:38 PM | Report abuse

Does appearing on the madden cover violate: conduct detremental to the team rule?

"Spero Dedes"?

LH he said that those hurt emotionally. I think he was refering to the consept that he is not used to being unwanted.

Side note: "Superbad" looks very very funny. Besides, it has Michael Cera, from RI fave "Arrested Development." Have you seen clarkandmichael.com?

Posted by: Cindy | August 11, 2007 7:49 PM | Report abuse

"Superbad" is going to be amazing. The early buzz is off the charts. I can't wait to see it...

Posted by: P Diddy | August 11, 2007 7:51 PM | Report abuse

Man, this pregame stuff is slooow. They just interviewed Dale Jr. He and Tiger are guys who should always, always wear ballcaps.

God, Jim Mora is annoying.

Love the Madden commercial. Nicely done.

Posted by: P Diddy | August 11, 2007 7:56 PM | Report abuse

Michael Cera has the ability to do the funny aquward that steve corell can do. I see bright things for him.

Im excited by the Beowulf trailers.

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | August 11, 2007 7:58 PM | Report abuse

I may lose some cool points but no question about see "Superbad".

Cindy I saw Lisa in the hallway and she was wearing these tight jeans with her SJK showing. She turned around and I told her what time it was. Jigga Jigga Yeah. LMGO

Posted by: jm220 | August 11, 2007 7:58 PM | Report abuse

Michael Cera did awkward fabulously every time anyone mentioned his "cousin," Maebe, on "AD."
Is it kickoff yet??????????

Posted by: Cindy | August 11, 2007 7:59 PM | Report abuse

I am jacked for: The Hobbit 2010-2011, Indana Jones 4, Star Trek 11

Posted by: 35332 | August 11, 2007 8:00 PM | Report abuse

Such a shame that AD isn't on their air, huh?

Posted by: P Diddy | August 11, 2007 8:01 PM | Report abuse

Beowulf scares me. I saw "Talk to Me" and most highly recommend that, with BFF (blog favorite forever) Chewetel Ejiofor.

Posted by: Cindy | August 11, 2007 8:01 PM | Report abuse

Spero Dedes is unbelievable! His lips and words aren't in sync! That's very hard to do.

Posted by: Cindy | August 11, 2007 8:03 PM | Report abuse

I thought that was my crappy resolution.

Posted by: 35332 | August 11, 2007 8:05 PM | Report abuse

Are we EVER going to kickoff?

Posted by: P Diddy | August 11, 2007 8:05 PM | Report abuse

Well, it could be my crappy resolution, too.

Posted by: Cindy | August 11, 2007 8:06 PM | Report abuse

It's not possible that all of us have crappy resolution. I noticed the same syncing problem.

Posted by: JustMe | August 11, 2007 8:07 PM | Report abuse

35332, I didn't misrepresent what he said. He wasn't likeable before he said that anyway. That's likely why he's not working. But comparing losing a job (which you'll still get paid for) to the end of your marriage to the mother of your children any context is sjk'd up.

Posted by: periculum | August 11, 2007 8:12 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: JustMe | August 11, 2007 8:14 PM | Report abuse

I have to say I really am a Jeff Fisher fan. I mean I hope we kick his SJK tonight but still think he is one of the good guys in the league.

Posted by: sfskin | August 11, 2007 8:14 PM | Report abuse

I'm telling, I go with the conspiracy theory. It keeps him from suffering the season-ending injury...until Sept. 9.
That Chevy commercial has gotta go. The King still creeps me out ... and now so does that Wendy's dope in the wig! He and the King should hook up.

Posted by: P Diddy | August 11, 2007 8:22 PM | Report abuse

Man it sounds like JC is looking good.

Posted by: jm220 | August 11, 2007 8:24 PM | Report abuse

Thank God Samuels won't be out long term. My heart can't take an entire season worrying about the left side of that line.

Posted by: JustMe | August 11, 2007 8:25 PM | Report abuse

Correction: 3 yard loss. And JC sacked, fumbles, Tennessee recovers. Titans defender totally unmolested as he gets to JC.

Posted by: Cindy | August 11, 2007 8:25 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: jm220 | August 11, 2007 8:25 PM | Report abuse

That would be Vincent Fuller, from Ga Tech, pirouetting through the o line.

Posted by: Cindy | August 11, 2007 8:26 PM | Report abuse

Bugger. I'm not watching it, only on Gamecentre. Was it Heyer who got beaten?

Posted by: kost52 | August 11, 2007 8:27 PM | Report abuse

My Sat Signal is still out....WTF!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Leevi | August 11, 2007 8:27 PM | Report abuse

London Fletcher nearly intercepted Kerry Collins....the pass had been tipped.

Posted by: Cindy | August 11, 2007 8:28 PM | Report abuse

That didn't look like Heyer's fault. Somebody (likely QB) didn't ID that blitzing DB.

Posted by: LH | August 11, 2007 8:30 PM | Report abuse

I'm not sure Heyer was the one who got beat. Somebody else probably had the corner assignment; Heyer had the lineman.

Posted by: Cindy | August 11, 2007 8:30 PM | Report abuse

Okay I'm relying on you guys to tell me what you see that is good bad and ugly - I can see some things but not nearly what the experts among us can see.

Posted by: sfskin | August 11, 2007 8:30 PM | Report abuse

The just said the Reaper was looking for someone to hit on the punt return. Yeah I can see why Fisher pulled Young. lol

Posted by: jm220 | August 11, 2007 8:32 PM | Report abuse

Who among us hasn't been flagged for illegal touching at one time or another?

Posted by: jm220 | August 11, 2007 8:34 PM | Report abuse

Third and nine: Oy.
JC back to throw, Jansen beaten like a drum, JC fumbles, Cooley recovers...52-yard punt.
Looks like about a 40-yard return. Oof.

On the bright side, defense has held well though.

Posted by: kost52 | August 11, 2007 8:39 PM | Report abuse

Lol, Cyndy.

I was joking ;-]

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | August 11, 2007 8:39 PM | Report abuse

sfskin, our qb, our offensive coordinator SUCKS!!!! and yes, that wasn't on heyer (neither one).

Posted by: lg | August 11, 2007 8:40 PM | Report abuse

What's up with JLC? Is he going to check in with us? Or is he just taking notes on the game?

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | August 11, 2007 8:41 PM | Report abuse

Did you guys see the interview with Romo in which a giant cockroach crawled all over him?

Posted by: Cindy | August 11, 2007 8:41 PM | Report abuse

I wonder if we'll see much of JC if the O like keeps playing like that.

Posted by: JustMe | August 11, 2007 8:41 PM | Report abuse

Campbell has to learn to protect/hold onto the football. That's two less than hard hits and two fumbles.

Posted by: LH | August 11, 2007 8:41 PM | Report abuse

yep, LL is gonna be sweet. hopefully he'll be good in coverage too.

Posted by: lg | August 11, 2007 8:41 PM | Report abuse

So Betts only played the one series?

Posted by: kost52 | August 11, 2007 8:42 PM | Report abuse

WOOO now THAT was nice! Nice throw SOUPS!

Posted by: sfskin | August 11, 2007 8:42 PM | Report abuse

JLaC very busy....Nice throw by JC to Moss, sweet catch...39 yards.

Posted by: Cindy | August 11, 2007 8:43 PM | Report abuse

Brunell who? We are going 10-6 or better.

Posted by: LH | August 11, 2007 8:43 PM | Report abuse

I know. I wonder what's up w/ him that he isn't holding onto the ball when he gets smacked. JC is a big dude. He can't cough up the damn ball everytime he's hit.

Posted by: JustMe | August 11, 2007 8:43 PM | Report abuse

Yes Cyn and it was funny. The G-Men D looks very bad right now. Being run all over.

Posted by: jm220 | August 11, 2007 8:43 PM | Report abuse

really. that's all this guy can do. one trick pony so far in his career, JC is. he hasn't grown a single bit in his short/medium passes.

Posted by: littery | August 11, 2007 8:43 PM | Report abuse

Sweeet pass.

How was Heyer's technique not a hold?

Posted by: P Diddy | August 11, 2007 8:44 PM | Report abuse

Well, the one hit was from the blind side. Still, QBs gotta know to hold on....

Posted by: Cindy | August 11, 2007 8:44 PM | Report abuse

Umm how was that not holding?

Posted by: sfskin | August 11, 2007 8:44 PM | Report abuse

I don't know littery...that short JC pass earlier to Randle El was pretty impressive...

Posted by: P Diddy | August 11, 2007 8:45 PM | Report abuse

lh, it won't be cuz of the offense.

they gave up friggin 3 picks for this dude!

Posted by: lg | August 11, 2007 8:46 PM | Report abuse

The Titans have blitzed, what, once? They're doing this with a four-man rush...
Suisham....sigh.

Posted by: Cindy | August 11, 2007 8:46 PM | Report abuse

Think we might bring in some kicking competition now?

Posted by: sfskin | August 11, 2007 8:46 PM | Report abuse

Clarifying: 10-6 or better if CP is healthy.

littery, that frozen rope to Randle El was a medium pass.

Posted by: Anonymous | August 11, 2007 8:47 PM | Report abuse

He went 8/9...cut him a little slack.

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | August 11, 2007 8:48 PM | Report abuse

Cooley is no blocker.

Posted by: LH | August 11, 2007 8:48 PM | Report abuse

diddy, that's cuz the DB tried to make a play on the ball. that don't happen in reg. season.

Posted by: littery | August 11, 2007 8:48 PM | Report abuse

lg this is the first pre season game. Take a deep breath dude. It's a little crazy to say he is no good and haven't improve from just three series

Posted by: jm220 | August 11, 2007 8:49 PM | Report abuse

This just in Vince Young isn't playing but we're going to show him on the sideline doing nothing at least once every 2 minutes!

Posted by: sfskin | August 11, 2007 8:49 PM | Report abuse

our D though looks awesome!

Posted by: lg | August 11, 2007 8:50 PM | Report abuse

I'm *loving* the Fletcher pick-up.

Posted by: JustMe | August 11, 2007 8:52 PM | Report abuse

Collins and Soups have one.

Posted by: sfskin | August 11, 2007 8:53 PM | Report abuse

"The Titans have blitzed, what, once? They're doing this with a four-man rush...

Same ole, same ole.

Maybe the Skins should draft some linemen instead of a saftey, eh?

5-11....same ole Redskins under Dan "no clue" Snyder.

- Ray

Posted by: Ray | August 11, 2007 8:54 PM | Report abuse

I think the green dots denote the player w/ a communication device in his helmet.

Posted by: JustMe | August 11, 2007 8:55 PM | Report abuse

jm220, how many shots did Romo have? how many starts did romo have till he came in last year for bledsoe?

i'd take katie romo over JC in a heart beat.

Posted by: littery | August 11, 2007 8:55 PM | Report abuse

Maybe because their helmets have the wireless?

Posted by: Cindy | August 11, 2007 8:55 PM | Report abuse

Holy Shmoly Man Boobs has lost so much weight! Can we even call him Man Boobs anymore?

And his squad is doing pretty well. . . well maybe not last two plays but overall me like.

Posted by: sfskin | August 11, 2007 8:56 PM | Report abuse

Umm let me see littery. Romo was in the league how many years? That would be 4 years before he got into a real game. Try to come better than that one partner.

Posted by: jm220 | August 11, 2007 8:57 PM | Report abuse

Yup, the green dots indicate who has the wireless receiver in their helmet. Only one player can have the receiver on any given play.

Posted by: P Diddy | August 11, 2007 8:57 PM | Report abuse

yep, agree london fletcher looks like he can play.

Posted by: littery | August 11, 2007 8:57 PM | Report abuse

ummm let's see jm220, this is JC's FOURTH YEAR!

Posted by: littery | August 11, 2007 8:58 PM | Report abuse

After all that's happened, I think we've done pretty well do only be down 3-0!

Posted by: kost52 | August 11, 2007 8:59 PM | Report abuse

I thought this was JC's third year. Irrelevant argument, anyhow. This is his first year as a starter. He's either going to play well or not. Let's give him a shot.

I'm disappointed that there are no Jessica Simpson commercials today...

Posted by: P Diddy | August 11, 2007 9:00 PM | Report abuse

relatively speaking ;)
...and romo didn't cost them 3 picks neither.

all my hopes rest on brunello.

Posted by: littery | August 11, 2007 9:01 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: sfskin | August 11, 2007 9:01 PM | Report abuse

Where is Betts? Is it because of the neck? Or is it because he is now the starting RB??

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | August 11, 2007 9:02 PM | Report abuse

littery and this is Romo 5th year. Like I said you need to come better than that my friend.

Posted by: jm220 | August 11, 2007 9:03 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: sfskin | August 11, 2007 9:03 PM | Report abuse

JC's performance is scaring the shti out of me.

diddy, this is romo's first year as a starter too.

Fletcher looks incredible.

O and Soups - timing just seems to be off.

The ARE pass was awesome so it's clearly possible but the timing seems out of synch.

The NFL emphasized that this year. Properly chinstrapping their helmets is a big way to cut down on concussions.

Absolutely no running game today. As your RBs go, so go your offense...

And, really, I don't think I can take anymore of this pre-season nonsense. Wish I could TiVo ahead to September 9th...

Posted by: P Diddy | August 11, 2007 9:12 PM | Report abuse

I'm not watching the game, but could some of JC's struggles be blamed on the fact that our run game has done zip?!

Posted by: kost52 | August 11, 2007 9:13 PM | Report abuse

Diddy why are you keeping track of non-calls against the Skins?

Posted by: LH | August 11, 2007 9:14 PM | Report abuse

Bear in mind that, come regular season, you'll see a different wrinkle when JC is a threat to run and/or pass. He isn't doing any keeper plays -- at least intentionally -- now.

Posted by: Cindy | August 11, 2007 9:14 PM | Report abuse

Looks like they fixed the body positioning on the snap so poor Soups doesn't have to squat all the way to the ground.

Soups seems to be in more of a groove - nice.

That has to be a fumble right?

Okay so first half nothing to write home about but I think Soups got his legs under him and I feel good. O-line obviously needs some help but they had some good stuff and D showed some 2004 & 2005 flash.

Gibbs presser: First off, I'm happy that we didn't lose anybody to injury tonight. After the way last year started, that's big positive for us.

I thought the defense did a great job all night with the exception of the one drive in the fourth quarter. I thought the guys on offense did some things well, considering it was our first game. Jason made some great throws, but he had some trouble holding on to the ball. We'll work on that this week. But overall I thought they fought their guts out and we just have to work a little harder this week to try and improve.

The front 7 looked great on D... better than great... they were dominant!!

Still no #2 cornerback. Smoot and Rogers looked bad.

L2 is the truth. Excuse me. Da Troof.

Frost looked like a Pro Bowl punter tonight.

We better sign a Kicker this week.

Can't tell much about the O with so many starters out (half the line, Portis, Lloyd, etc)... but Campbell looks like he has regressed since last year. He looked so slow and indecisive. Not what I expected.
We should start Collins, cut Brunell. Cut Fabini while you're at it.

Looks like 6-10 or 7-9 if we're lucky. I'm now sinking into mid-season form of depression.

I think it's pretty clear that Brunell is way over the hill. Indecisive, which is somewhat surprising to me for some reason.

Collins looks like he has the better arm, was more decisive and made good decisions.

I don't know what the intangibles are the Brunell brings to the team. I don't know if he should be kept to bring JC along. But to me that would be the only reason to keep him on the roster.

JC first, Collins second, ? Palmer versus MB.

Anyone konw the salary cap implications of cutting MB? Pretty evident that he won't get traded cause NO ONE will want him. Not that he'll actually be cut; too much of a Gibbs guy.

Posted by: CaroCanesFan | August 11, 2007 11:13 PM | Report abuse

I'm agreeing with you guys who suggested that Collins should be the back-up (I never, in a million years, thought I'd ever say that).

The number 1 priority needs to be getting that 1st string Oline together, though. They were awful the entire half they played. I expected trouble on that left side, but I did NOT expect Jansen to blow so completely.

My 0.02...

Defense:
Landry - real deal. I hadn't want him drafted but he's gonna be good.
Fletcher - thank goodness we have an MLB who can play
Rocky Mac - thought he did well
DB's - we're in for a long year. I don't think anyone covered anyone. Seriously.
Dline - looked pretty good. LB play will make them better

Offense
Jason Campell - pretty good, can stretch the field, has a great arm
Oline - BAD. And the right side was worse than the left, I think. Need to get in synch (shouldn't they already be?). Heyer looked OK I thought.
MB - sorry, great guy, all done
Collins - outstanding as a backup against scrubs; is #2 QB
Mason - did good for himself again

Teams:
Frost - wow. where'd he get his leg? keep it up
Suisham - I'm not worried. Think he'll do fine. Did you see how high up the post that FG kick was from 47 yards?
Cannot give up big plays like that!

O-line blew no doubt but I hope they don't panic and try to rush Samuels back.

I know a lot of us said this back in March leading up to FA and draft - need depth on the o-line but I didn't think it would be this big a need.

Okay okay give them a chance. . . positivity.

stevie in gp, you go to Wilson?

Posted by: MV Dame | August 11, 2007 11:27 PM | Report abuse

My take (in agreeance with some others):

JC showed some poise and that he can take a hit. While his stats weren't great, I thought he hung in there.

Stephon Heyer-- not bad for a first game, I thought he was pretty good.

MASON-- I like this kid. A lot. Move Rock back to FB and get this guy behind Ladell; there's some serious potential there.

Fabini-- the guy allowed, by my count, at least 2 sacks, and probably more. He just gave up on that German guy and got beaten by a third-stringer on another sack. For a veteran? Pathetic.

Brunnell-- horrible beyond horrible.

Collins-- I'm with others: never thought i'd say it, but in my eyes, showed #2 potential, clearly. Brunnell needs to be cut or moved to 3rd (they won't cut him because of the cap and cuz he knows the system; he should be released at the end of the season). I could see the Vikings taking him and giving us a 7th round pick.

#75-- what a guy. That's some guts, there. Not a lot of brains, but definitely guts.

Did I mention that Mason is the shizzle?

Posted by: TDawg | August 11, 2007 11:28 PM | Report abuse

Soups missed a read on the blitz on the first fumble.
He held the ball WAY too long on the next.
That's not the O-Line's fault.
He did make a few nice plays here and there, but the indecisiveness was very disappointing.

Posted by: D's L | August 11, 2007 11:28 PM | Report abuse

I am not certain that I agree with those who thought that JC didn't play well. I agree that he needs to hang on to the ball when he gets hit...

On the radio, Heyer just totally threw JC under the bus on the first fumble. Said the ball should have been thrown sooner and that he should have picked up the blitz (when he said that the line did what they were supposed to but "I guess we could have slide outside to help to save the hit, but the ball should have come out earlier."

Positives-

1) Defense, Landry and Fletcher and Blades all look good. No major injuries. Jimoh is awful. Golston continues to impress. If we keep Jimoh and let go of Preilou, then I quit.

2) Soupy to Moss, Soupy to ARE, Soupy takes hits w/o complaining.

3) Frost, good punts, good hit.

4) I would make collins #2, Palmer #3.
5) Blaylock and Mason good depth at RB.
6) We won.
Negs-
1) I am physically sickened by Brunell
2) Al Saunders and Joes Gibbs need a heart to heart meeting on offensive philosophy. Joe Gibbs II is a lot of stubborn refusal to adjust and see reality.
3) THE OFFENSIVE line looks like Butt Sizzle, we can't run block or pass block.
4) I am sick of Joe Bugel making excuses. Out tackles have stunk in pass blocking ever since he returned, IN ALL YEARS.
5) Soupy does not look for Cooley downfield. Cooley looks lost.
5) Fletcher drops an easy INT that might have set up Soupy on a short field
5) Suisham is unreliable.
6) Super special teams, gave up some long returns.
7) Fabini, Heyer, all the other turds they all stink on o-line.

Posted by: DTC | August 11, 2007 11:39 PM | Report abuse

I see that many are pretty effusive about the defensive performance.

I am still worried, particularly about the play of corners. I seriously don't think they covered anyone. How many third downs did they give up? How many passing yards did they give up. And remember that Tennessee isn't known for their all star / pro bowl receivers and we were playing against Kerry Collins....

Heyer's an idiot. Watch the first fumble and you'll see him take the inside man, leaving the guard with nobody to block. Heyer missed the read, plain and simple. Not a huge deal. He's a rookie in his first preseason game. But to go out and blame the franchise QB when he's in a position where he's an undrafted FA trying to make the team? What an idiot! Now he's shining the spotlight on himself, in a position where he was the one who screwed up first.

Should Soups have known pressure was coming from his blind side? Absolutely. And some fault lays with him for not feeling that and protecting the ball better. But Heyer screwed up the blocking, allowing the guy to come free. I don't fault the guy too much for the screwup, but I definitely think his attitude sucks.

My thoughts on MB:

I think back on his three years:
1st year - doesn't look sharp in preseason. suspect arm strength. after the season he admits he played all year hurt (what many suspected).

2nd year - Ramsey is #1. Brunell looks like a different player. Great arm strength. Brunells' best year here though I think at times we won despite him (made it to the playoffs despite him really sucking it up down the stretch -- was the re-committment to the run

3rd year - Again, MB of year one. Again find out he was hurt (throwing shoulder no less). Noodle for an arm. Born out by looking at the numbers and watching them throw everything

Tonight - MB of years 1 and 3. I just don't think he has the arm to do it anymore, no matter how gritty or smart he is.

Wise reports:
Gibbs said he wanted Campbell and the offense to "get more of a groove," and acknowledged he would have taken his starter out sooner had the Redskins motored down the field for two or more scores early on. "I think it was a rough start for Jason, he'd probably tell you that," Gibbs said, conceding that he was disappointed with the running game and the lack of pass protection.
Campbell wasn't too harsh on himself. "I probably need to protect the football better when I'm about to get hit," he said. He called the mistakes "correctible," and said his main frustration was not being able to sustain any drives into the red zone.

Mike Wise in today's WP:
"One of the more telling decisions made by the Redskins was to keep tight end Chris Cooley in to block instead of run his routes. It was reminiscent of the first part of last season in which the Redskins had so little confidence in their offensive line to stem the rush and right tackle Jon Jansen was believed to need real help. When Cooley's catch-and-run abilities aren't utilized, the Redskins become a much more limited offensive team and another of Campbell's weapons is taken away."

Maybe that's why Cooley was quiet. I think Wise is spot on!

IMHO, the starting O-line did a decent job in pass protection, not so good run blocking. The first sack was on JC. He did not ID the blitz. He acknowledged this on the radio. He didn't check backside when receiver went in motion. Second sack was on Jansen. At the same time JC is holding the ball a little too long. That sack could have and should have been avoided. Heyer played well. I bet he will grade out high on pass protection. All in all its the first game and I wouldn't panic. These mistakes can easily be corrected. Remember, our number 1 back didn't play and number 2 was limited by injury. 10-6 or better is still on tap if Portis is healthy.

As I stated previously, Brunell is finis, done, caput. Get his SJK outta here. I see my man littery was backpedaling like Smoot during Boonell's play.

Posted by: LH | August 12, 2007 12:51 AM | Report abuse

backpedaling? who you talkin about willis?

i said 14-2 and don't know where that 2's gonna come from neither. not because of anything on O cuz i think coach will take care of the little problem known as weird al. eventually. but because of the defense.

tenny's lucky vince went out with fisher's wife last night cuz he would've gotten his bell rung by london bridge london bridge and LL.

Posted by: littery | August 12, 2007 1:01 AM | Report abuse

Agreed, LH. Brunell is done. We all agreed that he could stay around as the safety blanket, the guy who would not LOSE the game, the guy who could avoid sacks and negative plays. The guy who you could count on to throw the damn ball away before getting into trouble. He didn't even have THAT tonight. His best plays were the two times he walked to the line and called time out. He needs to go.

That said, I am no Collins fan. Dude looks like a statue back there. I don't like him very much, but I do like him better than Brunell at this point, after tonight's game.

8:40 pm you said "our qb, our offensive coordinator SUCKS!!!!"

8:43 pm you called JC a "one trick pony so far in his career, JC is. he hasn't grown a single bit in his short/medium passes."

8:46 pm you said Skins won't be good because of the offense and questioned "[giving] up friggin 3 picks for this dude!"

8:55 pm you said you would "take katie romo over JC in a heart beat

And your piece de resistance came at 9:01 pm when you said "all my hopes rest on brunello."

After no points or sustained drives by your savior you offered up this ditty at 11:16 pm: "i'm sorry to say to all you brunello fans that brunello needs to go." And you took him out of your depth chart completely.

You're right that's not backpedaling that's reverse skating. My bad.

Posted by: LH | August 12, 2007 1:36 AM | Report abuse

It was amazing that our D line looked as good as it did... the LBs were fantastic, by and large, and the corners looked dubious for the most part. I was expecting the line to be our weakness and the corners to be solid, so I had them reversed.

But we heard, and maybe you heard this depending on which media outlet's coverage you were watching, that the starting quarterback for the Titans did not play. So maybe we weren't quite as good as we looked in that first half.

Also, this youngster Chris Henry appears to be the truth. He looked good even against our pretty-good D.

Nate, I agree that Henry was the truth. He ran hard, blocked well, and picked up a Blitz.

Lisa, I am worried about Soupy to Cooley. On the one play over the middle to ARE that was almost a catch then fumble, I thought during replay of one unusual camera angle (back judge perspective), I saw Cooley running open deep over the middle.

Cooley's blocking looked suspect. Plus he looked slow when he picked up that fumble.

PS: If I have to hear Joe Nameth and Mike Singletary and Bill Cowher publicize the NFL Superbowl hihglight thing one more time " We did it, we did it" , I think I will have to start playing the Sonny and Sam radio broadcast the vewry second the commercials start to come on. Well, just caught up and finally finished up the game on the Tivo. Man, it's just hard to figure out what to think. It's like Positive Guy and Negative Guy are having a slobberknocker, right now.

Positive Guy wants to think that part of the deal with the lack of offensive production is just from Big Playbook Al deciding to tear off a little corner of a page from the playbook, then scribbled down some horribly cheesy plays in cauliflower Crayola, just because he's trying to hide his playbook (which does absolutely zero in the faith and confidence department for we pessimistic RIers, for certain). Negative guy just thinks that the offense hasn't improved, and has simply just grown more offensive.

Positive Guy thinks that the O-line is still trying to get used to the new people placement, and will work their kinks out, especially when Thomas and Samuels return. Negative guy believes that they're all confused Bags of Dirt, especially 'Toss-The-QB-In-The-Fire' Heyer.

Positive guy would like to focus his attention on the decent showing of the LBs and DL, especially the solid play of Dub-L and LoFleBaker this evening. Negative guy just points out how non-defensive the cornerbacks were this evening, especially Idle Ade Munster.

Beyond that - JC looked alright - he definintely needs to work on getting the ball out quickly. When Cooley starts getting out on routes, I think it should improve a bit. Todd Collins looked less than awkward - had a little zip to the ball.

But Brunell - back to his old tricks. Gets the ball, tries to figure out who is still in the range of his arm as they're running their patterns, then after taking too long in figuring that out, tries to back off and buy time with his legs, then gets thwocked or tosses the ball out of the sidelines. I just hope that isn't contagious or something - don't want JC catching that particular habit.

I just hope the team actually shows us some moxie, soon. After a non-performance like tonight, I'm one Krispy-Kreme donut away from a full-blown myocardial infarction.

ii. LaRon popping that QB on a blitz
7. our WR (a little help on the name?) catching the pass as he fell after his facemask was personally fouled
ix. Frost's tackle, of course

Given the paucity of actual NFL game experience on his resume, can Todd Collins legally be referred to as a 'veteran?'

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 12, 2007 2:33 AM | Report abuse

MV - for the numbers of course. That's why I'm here. It has nothing to do with the fact that my behind has mind melded with the sofa. : )

I guess Collins is a veteran in the way say Al Gore is a Vietnam veteran.

So.

She's not an ex- or current lady. This is a someone who wanted to be but never was. She moved up to the Vineyard recently and I was friendly with her but she wanted to be even friendlier with me though it was never anything I wanted so I've been keeping her at arms length...

Uh-oh MV. You do realize that being of the female persuasion she is going to overanalyze all things when she is in 13 year old crush/infatuation mode (we all do it it's part of our "intelligent design).

So here is the problem you may have just created for yourself. Despite clear and coherent statements you may have made in your email, here is what she's gonna see.

Message from "MV DAME" sent/received 2:00am Sunday 8/12/07.

Here's what she's gonna think (maybe)

"Oh my gawd. He sent me an email at 2am. That means he must be thinking about me. I know he wrote no and stuff but he sent it at 2AM on a Saturday night. There's hope. I know there is."

Yeah we really do think things like this gents. It's what makes us infuriating.

Man Blames Cat After Gun Fires
Cat Euthanized After Shooting

POSTED: 1:22 pm EDT August 11, 2007
UPDATED: 4:53 pm EDT August 11, 2007

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- A New Hampshire man has been charged with a felony after he first told police that his cat had accidentally shot itself.

Nicholas Goroff, 24, told officers the cat had knocked over a shotgun, causing it to fire. But beer cans in his apartment and the smell of alcohol on his breath, caused police to question his story.

Eventually, he told police he had pulled the hammer back on the gun and while attempting to release it his thumb slipped and the gun fired. A round hit the cat. . .

17 starts and 40 games appeared in, in 11 seasons?? How much do we really know about Todd Collins? He looked like a freakin' statue in there! A statue! So yes, he appears to be competent playing third string versus third string.

Maybe just maybe Gibbs will let him play next week after Soup comes out. I think we've seen what Brunell can and cannot do. Soup for two series, then Collins through the third quarter, then LBP.

See if only you'd had Smack's or is it Stumped's turban you'd be in the clear.

I know I'm using broadstroke generalizations of my gender here but having just talked one of my friends down from a tree of overanalysis and flat out insanity vis a vis a guy I'm not feeling terribly generous.

They even called the resulting blog post 'Sean Taylor is Running Around Right Now and Is Not Injured, You Morons.'

SFSKIN-

I wish i could PM you and tell u who the source was. lol. I dont work with their site but i live with one of them. The source was ROCK solid. Again, people seemed to find it UNBELIEVABLE that somebody could get an MRI during the day yet still be able to attend practice later that night. MRI doesnt mean certain injury...it means they're looking at it.

These guys dont run a rumor site, thats not what they do. They're just fans. They got a friend tell them from a face-to-face run in...so they thought they'd pass the info along. A few ppl came over to their site and blasted them in the comments section. It was kinda funny. But, i mean if they had a bunch of ads on their site and were just trying to get hits that would be one thing.

Skins fans treat that kind of news the way DC denizens treat a drop of rain or snow - FULL BLOWN PANIC. "Quick run to the store and buy every loaf of bread you can find because clearly this snow storm is the beginning of the next Ice Age - I saw the Day After Tomorrow you know."

Wow, all the relationship talk has me tempted to bring up my pile of BS.

A year ago, I was dumped by a chick who decided she wanted to go back to her ex. Never mind that she is insane and that her ex is a complete and total idiot, but I was totally heartbroken. Fast forward a year, and now I'm dealing with nearly the same stuff. A girl I really liked dumped me and is now dating another guy. She calls, texts, IMs, Facebooks, and MySpaces constantly to tell me how happy she is. I finally told her that she was a complete nutcase, utterly disrespectful, and not the kind of person I ever want to see again. She, of course, ignores me.

In any event, tonight I had dinner with the girl from a year ago. She is even MORE insane, albeit now single. She is NUTS. A year removed from my heartbreak, I can see how wrong she is for me.

And suddenly I got perspective on the latest girl to break my heart. She's crazy and I shouldn't be anywhere near her. Or, at least, I shouldn't be anywhere near her if I'm ever going to accomplish the goals I've set for myself.

Anyway...back to the game...

You almost have to convince yourself you're going to watch a tennis match or something. You have to be a neutral observer almost so you dont get insanely excited or down.

x. carry around your pleather viscount certificate holder and casually flop it open on the bar next to you.

9. get one of those garish golden bracelets, like a thick heavy band with a heavy rope chain thingy, and have VISCOUNT engraved in really big letters on the band part. and wear it to the bar.

MV Dame, I have a confession to make...

...until I actually "became" a Viscount (the veracity of this whole thing is very sketchy!), I had a) no idea what a Viscount was and b) actually pronounced it "Vis-Count" instead of the correct "Vie-Count".

It took another ex of mine (my favoritest, most wonderfullest ex ever) to explain it all to me.

"It's only preseason," but the Skins offense really stunk it up. Gibbs to wake up and smell the manure that's on the offensive side of the ball. I think he's too lax in making sure they're properly prepared. They couldn't even execute their basis running plays at all. If an offensive team can't execute their most basic plays, how in the world are they gonna execute more intricate play calling? The offense was a step slow throughout the 1st half. That's a strong reflection on Gibbs and Saunders handling of the offense so far. Comcast, JLC and I think Czarniak of News 4 have reported that the Skins' camp hasn't been overly physical. Instead, it seems more like last season in terms of physicality.

In the Ravens scrimmage, the Ravens' "scrubs" outplayed the Skins "scrubs." That's a further indictment on Cerrato's lack of an eye for talent and AGAIN, Gibbs inability to get his team ready to ball.

Even though Gibbs has said he'll address the problems of the preseason, I wouldn't expect much to change during their training camp practices. He's said it before many times and hasn't altered his handling of the team. I don't understand how a guy who has a history of winning, "knows how to win" and "wants to win" can be such a dumba#$ and so ignorant and stubborn about how bad his team is. It's amazing he's in the HOF. It really does look like Snyder bought him off and controls him.

If the Redskins want to have a good offensive year, they need the best offensive line possible. I know they wont do this, but this is what is needed: Move Jansen to left guard and put Wade at right tackle. Wade is better than Jansen is right now. Joe Jacoby made the move and the team benefited. Its time for Jansen to stop talking about leadership and start leading. His volunteering to make the move would be a huge statement and a positive move for the team. Keeping Cooley in to help Jansen takes away one of the best weapons on the team. Wade proved he could play tackle last year, and was impressive in the start he made for Jansen.

People People People....

Take a breath. Now again.

I am not denying there are concerns, but grab onto some perspective here. Its the first preseason game. They know what they have to work on, the OFF line is in injury flux. It did not go from being the best unit to worst overnight. The def looked improved. We saw good things from Fletcher.

And we cut Soups even a bit of slack??? Our line was patchwork, the top 2 RB hardly played, he hit a few decent passes and he showed us a good amount IN REAL GAMES LAST YEAR!!

Dealer/littery genius: You need to check yourself, are you serious? I usually find your delusional semi coherent rants entertaining but your really just starting to sound like 9 year old. If it was up to you we'd still have Spurrier running out Danny Wuerfel to "pitch and catch" to Jaquez Green. So your football acumen is, how do I say this...moronic.

All this positivity is useless. Stop. Please. Look at what we have! NOTHING. Yes, the D was solid. But the O is worse than ever.

"Its the first preseason game" "Blah, blah, blah". We used that one last year. We also used the "Gibbs was 0-4 his first year and turned it around". As well as my favorite "The Skins are showing just a fraction of their playbook in preseason".

Yeah, that was helpful for the rest of the season.

The first half of last night's game is merely a sample of what our beloved Redskins will endure this year. And for us, the fans, it flat out sucks.

Actually he did volunteer to move to LEFT TACKLE. But by all accounts Wade might be better. Wade would move to Left Tackle before Jansen. That would still leave the guard position open. They have a large quantity of guard applicants in camp. It could still happen.

************************************************************
"A year ago, I was dumped by a chick who decided she wanted to go back to her ex.

Or, at least, I shouldn't be anywhere near her if I'm ever going to accomplish the goals I've set for myself."
****************************************************

Pdiddy, I shake my head ruefully ... we all have met these types of chicks. They do these things because in todays world ... hey
they CAN. The have the commodity we are trying to obtain. They will torture you mercilessly.

YOU must KNOW the rules of the game. (Knowing they like to create and change THEIR rules constantly. )

1st rule: If you are not enjoying the game you have broken a game rule.

2nd rule: The Paradoxes.

To have someone you must release all attachment to them.
If you "reach" for them (smother) too much the other person automatically withdraws.
If you take something away the other person wants it more.

3rd rule: Challenge versus Compliance
Women will do everything in their power to make you change and adapt to their alleged ideal. Once you change you are no longer of interest to them. A man must be himself, A CHALLENGE, not a chump even in committed relationships and marriage.

THE GREATER the CHALLENGE, the greater the control. The one who is is the bigger challenge has the most control.

4th rule: Confidence versus Vulnerability.
No woman wants a man who is capable of being wounded, hurt or open to attack. Being sensitive, sharing, and tender is what they want but vulnerability goes way beyond that.

5th rule: Candor vs. Frankness
Women want Candor. They hate dishonesty. But they do not want frankness. You have to be romantic enough, listen mostly,
talk just enough and touch enough.

6th Rule: Change vs. Communication.
Women want communication if it means you will change. Her nature is not to bow out quietly. She will try to get you to change enough to fit her idealization of what you should be. She will blame you and find you wrong. The last thing she will do is make the determination that you do not fit and allow you both to move on to better relationships.

7th Rule: Do not show a lack of self-confidence.

The more seriously you take things the less chance there is of succeeding. Do not come across as weak, wishy-washy, uncertain or helpless because of a lack of self-confidence insecurity etc.

If they tell you they are so happy in numerous messages tell them YOU THINK ITS GREAT!!! YOU HAVE MOVED ON. IGNORE their IM's, emails, etc.

Appear nonchalant about new boyfriends etc. The less you seem to care - the more she will be interested in being with YOU instead. Now you are the challenge.

Sheesh what were you guys up to last night? SMACK how can you be so sure? EH? Who is buried directly underneath the Vatican? St. Peter the first Pope. What was he? An ultra orthodox JEW. According to the encyclopedia only ONE Christian church may lay the claim that it was directly founded by Jesus Christ. That is the Roman Catholic Church. What was Jesus Christ? An Ultra orthodox JEW his entire life.

So, perhaps, this simple proof seems to indicate that Christianity and in particular Catholicism is a Jewish sect. There are quite a number of those and their used to be even more back in the day.

The question perhaps we should ask is, okay so how come I can't celebrate Rosh Hoshanna if I am Catholic?

"As for Todd/Tom Collins: he played against a bunch of schlubs who won't be making NFL rosters. Brunello was disappointing. The offense looks pretty stagnant once more."

Hmm well the point I think is that Rattay did start a number of times for teams like the 49'ers. Collins has yet to start a game I believe? And we had all of our "scrubs" in. The point is our "Schlubs" Looked a hell-uv-a-lot better than there's did. And Tennessee is a good team! That bodes extremely well for our side especially on special teams!

Does anyone think that having Brunell at the helm for even one full game is a good idea? Especially if we have nagging o-line issues making the run game more of a question.

I'm still figuring we're going in the 9-7 area but if MB takes over for even a game I don't know.

"I'm still figuring we're going in the 9-7 area but if MB takes over for even a game I don't know."

I know many here think Gibbs comes across as a huckle-puck.

BUT this is precisely why he went for Brunell (IN ADDITION TO AND NOT REPLACING) Ramsey. Its why he drafted a QB given all the other positions that cried out for attention. This is why they need Palmer to step up.

Why I was not happy when Bramlet was released. But one must assume that Gibbs knows what he wants from a QB. You do need more 1 or 2. You've got to have 3 or 4, with some in the pipeline.

They do not have enough good or potentially good quarterbacks. And they are going to have to address it eventually. They will likely draft a QB next year as well.

Els (-2 so far today) and Woody Austin (-1 today) are playing well. Austin missed a short putt that would have pulled him within 1 at the time. I said yesterday that Ames would rue making that birdie and putting himself in the final group. Three bogeys in the first five holes. Ouch.

TIME FOR THE WASHINGTON POST TO GET A NEW REDSKINS BEAT REPORTER. JASON LA CANFORA SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIRED A LONG TIME AGO. SOMEONE WHOSE MOTIVES ARE CLEAR: HE HATES THE REDSKINS MANAGEMENT AND COACHING STAFF, AND THIS IS REALLY REFLECTED IN EVERY ARTICLE HE WRITES.

REMEMBER WHEN MARK MASKE USED TO COVER THE REDSKINS? THE ARTICLES WERE SIMPLY FACT-BASED REPORTS, NO OPINING WHATSOEVER. JASON LA CANFORA MISTAKENLY BELIEVES HE IS AN EDITORIAL WRITER. HE DOESN'T UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT OF REPORTER (REPORT THE NEWS, DON'T SHAPE IT).

There is no question Tiger is going to win way more than 18 majors. After today he will be at 13.

Posted by: jm220 | August 12, 2007 4:55 PM | Report abuse

If you're talking majors, he catches Jack with ease. This will be number 13 and he's just 31. Jack only had 8 by the time he was 31. He didn't win his 13th until he was 35. Tiger hasn't even entered his "prime." The only question is how much longer will we have to wait for him to get to number 19.

Clinton Portis, RB WAS
News: Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs got some good news about Clinton Portis, who sat out Saturday's preseason game against the Titans because of knee tendinitis. Portis was examined in Nashville by Dr. James Andrews, and Gibbs said they were told the Redskins are treating Portis properly with medicine to ease the swelling.
Analysis: The last 12 months have not been kind to Portis. Last preseason, he separated his shoulder making a tackle in a preseason game, then broke his right hand last November and was diagnosed with patella tendinitis in May of this year. Suffice to say, Portis is a legit injury risk in 2007

Here's the unspecified team rule Vince Young violated if anyone was interested after Spero Dedes broke the record for number of times saying that in a telecast.

The Tennessean reports

Young broke curfew by spending Friday night at home instead of at the hotel where the team stays during camp. Players with less than four years experience are required to stay at the hotel.

Patchwork offensive line was lousy. That kept everything from working -- no running game, strugg-a-licious passing game. Soup played the entire first half, and never could get anything going.

3-0 at halftime. It was brutal to watch at times.

But the D seemed solid. But Vince Young wasn't playing, so it's hard to say how good we really are.

RB C
WR B
TE no grade
O line D

D line B
LB A
CB C
S B

Saw highlights of the game... Impressed with the D, the O needs some work.

I wonder if GDubbs might be showing too much based on all the blitzing that was shown in the highlights. It definitely looks like the D will have to keep the Skins in the game at this point, but then again this was just the first pre-season game.

The chemistry on the O-line doesn't look like it's there quite yet. Doesn't help that Samuels is out for a few more weeks. Maybe they would be better off if they moved Heyer inside and Wade back outside. Just a thought... I'm sure Buges will get things in order.

At the risk of being crowned King of the Blatantly Obvious, I offer the following:

The defense overall looks pretty good. Last year the practice squad couldn't have fallen on a football for a score against a Pop Warner team. I think we'll be much better defensively this year.

Campbell will be a good journeyman QB. Not a Montana or a Young or a (Peyton) Manning; more like a Hasselback, Rypien or Doug Williams, with maybe a Jay Schroeder long-ball flair.

O-Line will flat out be a problem all year, and this will affect Soup's performance without a doubt. He's going to get in a habit of flinching on that left side, and that will result in missed chances downfield, as well as being chased into sacks because he'll be hearing footsteps even when they're not there. Help on that side has got to be the top priority from here on out.

I think the glass is half-full, but we're still a couple years away from contending for the 'Bowl. As long as we beat Dallas twice, that'll be good enough for me.

Posted by: Montana'Skins Fan | August 12, 2007 10:28 PM | Report abuse

Ok people, this is ridiculous.

As much as I enjoy the Burgundy & Gold banter on this blog, listening to people freak out worse than chicken little after one pre-season game is at first laughable, but in a way sad. Maybe it's actually good that teachers at my school 'report for spring training' tomorrow, which means I'll have less time to wade through some of the craziness I see here.

If you watch the most successful 'current' teams, like Pittsburgh, San Diego (last year under Cam Cameron/Marty ball), Carolina, and to a certain extent the Rams, you see elements of the same Joe Gibbs offense the Redskins ran so successfully in the 80's/ early 90's. Pittsburgh won a Super Bowl that way; the Chargers had the best record in football last year. I don't see where the Patriots were doing anything offensively that the Skin's didn't do from 1981-1992. How many of you have forgotten that the 1983 'Skins set a then record for points scored? You don't do that by running on 1st and 2nd down then throwing the ball. The REAL question we should ask isn't 'what's wrong with the system?', but 'what's wrong with the PLAYERS.

Those previously mentioned teams have been playing their systems for years, were cohesive, and believed in it. Stability and cohesiveness have NOT been pillars of The Dan Snyder era, let alone player evaluation, development, and selection. Joe Gibbs I simply had players who believed in his system and where cohesive, and thus executed it; Doak Walker came close a few years ago mentioning the limited 'football IQ' of the 'Skins at the time.

This year isn't critical for Gibbs; it's critical for the PLAYERS. If they fail to believe in what they do and execute it, then changes, SERIOUS changes must be made. I'll admit, though, if Saunders/Gibbs fail to exploit the strengths of the players they have, then it's on them. If your o-line is sayin' "lets pound'em cause they can't take it," you have to integrate that into your play-calling, and not get shi-shi for the sake of being shi-shi.

Calm down, folk; Save your burgundy and gold bloodletting for the regular season.

alrighty then....people who think we are over-reacting are full of themselves. we are NOT over reacting after "one lousy preseason game". we are over reacting after SIXTEEN regular season games and FIVE preseason games. GET that in your obtuse, full of yourselves heads!

what was wrong with joe gibbs system? add some pass plays and that's it. look at how pittsburgh won the superbowl. his system can work. but sadly in my nsho i think joe physically can't do it anymore and that's why he hired al. which he's probly wishing he hadn't.

this personnel, SELECTED by GIBBS, isn't suited for what's his face's "offense". the people he's brought in the last 2 years are TJ duckett, frank lloyd, and todd collins. and he prefers betts over CP. who friggin carried the team into the playoffs.

so what we're sayin is either go back to gibbsism by A LOT like 90% or ditch weird al alltogether.

soups is good but he aint al saunders' system guy. period. end of story. let's move on. you want to stay for the rest of the movie? go ahead. but his throws aren't timing throws. his throws are gibbs QB throws. he thinks he can will him to become his QB. actually it's more like gibbs is forcing him to make JC what he will never be...but that's another story.

They have given up a lot of those third downs [shades of last year], but I wonder if they're simply running a base pass defense just to evaluate the different players. It's been hard to see how much pressure they're getting with just four rushers, since Collins seems to be dumping off short so much.

So after the first half, what to think of the offense.
1. Campbell made the throws -- could've been 10/14, seemed to have a little too much adrenaline on the first couple of throws, but settled down. There was a throw with about 3:20 left in the second qtr to #16 that was a really nice ball, and if it was to #89 or #82 or even #81 would've been a catch/ interference... #16 tried to let the ball come to him and let the CB close.
q. How many plays did Betts get in? 3, or 4? I like the Rock, but to go from Portis to Rock and not expect a dropoff in performance isn't realistic.
%. The O-line never, not once that I saw, got a surge that pushed the D-line back. That's the shocking difference between Soupy 1.x and the 2.1 beta. But if we lose two starters at any time, it's going to be a struggle -- as it would be for most teams.

Posted by: cload and daggar | August 13, 2007 1:03 AM | Report abuse

I think it falls in the middle. The "overreactors" and the "lets wait and seers". Gibbs himself is concerned. You can see it when you watch the video. Good teams and their starters come out for a 1/4 and execute the offense flawlessly during preseason. It is clear that the Redskins offense is not organized well enough or imbued with the system well enough yet to do that. This leads into Gibbs comments about young guys with a shot to make this team. He is obviously not thrilled with the veterans.

On the other side of the ball things look decidedly different with the addition of Fletcher-Baker. He appears to make all the difference in the world. This defense now appears to be executed flawlessly for the most part by the 1st team starters. Thanks in no small measure to the new middle linebacker.

The question now is how long will it take to get the offense going again? Will it take games into the regular season? Its a question I am sure the offensive staff must be asking.

Posted by: periculum | August 13, 2007 1:45 AM | Report abuse

Let's be honest, he gives te Redskins the best chance to win. After Gibbs' decided to hook Brunell after the humiliating Eagles loss mid last season, he should have at the very least given at least two starts just to see how Collins would fair in a real life game situation in an offense he can run and manage as efficiently as some of the games most potent quarterbacks. I know Al Saunders was privately lobbying for Collins to start after the Brunell benching but to no avail. Gibbs' train of thought and more importantly, his judgment have come under big time questioning in his second tenure. He is too stubborn and fixated. Now he is placing a lot of time, energy and fans hopes with a huge gamble on Jason Campbell. Not to take anything away from Jason, but the obvious choice is in front of him. Collins looks good, gets the ball out quick and know exactly where to go with the ball. Could it be due to all the repetitions he got in his six years in Saunders system? YES! He knows the system and Al Saunders has all the confidence in him. If the offensive coordinator feels more confortable with a certain quarterback underneath center, why as a head coach deny him of that along with denying your team the best chance to win as many football games as possible. Does Gibbs have an answer to my question? As a die hard fan I want to win and I want to win now damn it. I am tired of using hope and wishful thinking as my excuse as to why I think the Redskins will do well every season. Collins can ignite and manage the offense, give him a freaking chance to show what he can do.

Posted by: TDawg | August 13, 2007 3:23 AM | Report abuse

Here are the statistics for a well-known journeyman QB in his first full year in the NFL. Note that the attempts average more than 35/game, reflective of a lack of running game (and a dink&dunk approach to passing with a shaky O-Line).

G__GS__Att__Comp__Pct__Yds___YPA__Lg__TD __Int
16__16__575___326__56.7__3739__6.50__78__26___28

Numbers like these from Jason Campbell in 2007 would be quite acceptable.

Posted by: The Crickets | August 13, 2007 4:10 AM | Report abuse

For those who weren't aware of it:

"Cornelius Griffin suited up for the game, but coaches opted to sit the veteran defensive tackle. Griffin is regarded as one of the keys to the Redskins' defensive line, so assistant head coach-defense Gregg Williams will likely rest him any chance they get.

Nine-year veteran Joe Salave'a started in place of Griffin, playing next to second-year lineman Kedric Golston." (from Redskins.com)

Montgomery also played DT in rotation with Salave'a and Golston in the 1st half. Golston looked really good.

Hey, I know its not Skins related, but as I recall-- things get pretty liberal inside the beltway!

Ryan Leaf made a good play here and there, The NFL has tons of QBs like that! JCs mistakes say he is TRASH not TREASURE.
JCs MISTAKES!
1. OVERTHREW WRs
2. DID NOT AVOID RUSH
3. DID NOT PROTECT FOOTBALL
4. HIS FACE SHOWS CONFUSION NOT CONFIDENCE
Saying he had makeshift line is so ignorant and misleading(only 1 starter not in)!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous | August 13, 2007 7:07 AM | Report abuse

Wow guys it's been a real feeding-frenzy on here the last few days!

I watched as much as I could bear of the game (quit in 3Q) and it was bad, but only bad like most pre-season games are. A lot of JC's throws look labored/forced, so whoever was saying he's not doing timed throws I think is right, but that isn't his natural game anyway and when he's got Albert Haynesworth being blocked by an invisible tackle you can hardly blame him for wanting to get rid of it!

For what it's worth, Trent Green pretty much stunk the place up in our first game too. I hope that's not a sign of things to come, as our D looked pretty good (as did our backup QB's).

If this keeps up all the points in season opener will be scored by the D's!

Posted by: Redcoat | August 13, 2007 7:49 AM | Report abuse

I think you've also got to ask how effective Captain Chaos will be in an offense that needs him to primarily act as protection for the QB on passing plays.

IMHO New England screwed up Daniel Graham that way because their line couldn't block well enough. He was looking like an elite TE in 2004 and then went backwards. Don't do that to Cooley!

Posted by: Redcoat | August 13, 2007 7:54 AM | Report abuse

Honestly, this is getting insane. This blog in the the last 48 hours is reading more like talk radio nuttiness than our normal banter.

Can we give a young QB maybe a few more games? Can we base our judgements on how he played in real games last season rather than 1 quarter of pre=season game 1? Can we can the Todd Collins crap? Is he the next Babe Laufenberg? Lets imagine what JC would have done in mop up Sat night.

I have been a very harsh critic of the Skins and will continue to be a "call em like I see em" guy but please this is getting ridiculous up here...

Pretty soon we will start on here purposing trades like, "The Colts need DT help, how about Salavea'a and JC for Peyton Manning"

Posted by: chris larry | August 13, 2007 7:56 AM | Report abuse

A question: was the way the O-line played on Saturday what Spurrier-ball looked like? If yes then wow, that really sucks if you're the QB.

Liturgenius, why would you be all nostalgic for that?

Posted by: Redcoat | August 13, 2007 7:57 AM | Report abuse

Well said, Redcoat, you saucy British bastard!

My *hope* is that Cooley was quiet to help out Heyer and Jansen, who both looked lost at times. Surprisingly, I thought that Heyer played better than Jansen that game.

Good lord, though-- Fabini needs to go! Someone suggested moving Todd Wade to right tackle and Jansen to left guard. An interesting idea...

Posted by: TDawg | August 13, 2007 7:59 AM | Report abuse

Todd Collins! WTF!!! (SJK) How long he been in the league? How many starts in real games? Walk away from the bottle. After one pre season game some of you really needs to take a deep breath.

Why thankyou TDawg, although I'm a 'fins fan, I've developed a soft spot for the 'skins too.

You can't keep Fabini, his name sounds like some sort of fabric softener and he plays like one too. "Keep your tighty whities spring fresh all day with Fabini".

At one point in the game I think they were talking to Haynesworth on the sidelines and he implied that the Titans were running a 'vanilla' defense, so the 'skins offensive coaches have to be a little concerned that their O-line were handed their asses in a sling by a 'vanilla' 4-man push - NO blitzes.

Posted by: Redcoat | August 13, 2007 8:17 AM | Report abuse

Perhaps some of you misunderstood my comments. My references to Rypien and Williams and Jay Schroeder as journeyman QB's weren't intended as disparaging. Those QB's got us 2 rings. My point is that Soup doesn't have to be the next Manning or Brady or Elway. And by most accounts, he won't be. He can be successful by holding on to the ball, not throwing too many picks, and basically giving our opponents a short field to work with. Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer let their defense set the tone, and simply managed their offense. We can do the same. But the O-line will be a work in progress.

Posted by: Montana'Skins Fan | August 13, 2007 8:38 AM | Report abuse

Well put Montana.

I think the worry that people are expressing on here is that if the o-line can't be made to at least hold their own, there is a danger that JC turns into David Carr before he gets a chance to replicate the perfectly good examples you cite above.

I'm sure everyone remembers a blitz (corner?) getting to JC and causing a fumble. I also recall that Jansen whiffed when Tenn ran a stunt, no? This offense gave up just 19 sacks last year, I'm not so worried after losing one guy and playing one PREseason game about the line. I'm actually encouraged that it was the O line that looked bad and not the other parts.

Great practice for our NFL fantasy league. Ugh.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 13, 2007 9:31 AM | Report abuse

I stand corrected WrongDog, from an interview with Fisher. "We got pressure, and we had different kinds of sacks, slot blitz sacks. We had one-on-one sacks. We had game sacks."

I did see the 'skins o-line being badly manhandled by a 4-man push a few times though.

Posted by: Redcoat | August 13, 2007 9:32 AM | Report abuse

Montana, I hear ya, but I think 'journeyman' is a trigger word for me -- it's inherently derogatory, at least that's my knee-jerk reaction.

To my ears it means a guy wasn't good enough to stick in his first or even his second stop, playing the most important position in the game, but he was good enough to keep getting signed and making rosters, at least for a few years.

And I just think it's too early to hang that label on Soup. I want him to succeed in his first stop! I want him to be good enough to establish himself as our starter and make us better for a few years. At least for this season there is nobody close to him on our roster. Let's give the dude a chance. Is all I'm sayin'

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 13, 2007 9:35 AM | Report abuse

Yep that's me Nate. I got spanked by Kost at the weekend!

Although it didn't help that Rooney broke his foot (again) when he fell off his ego. :-) I now have only 1 fit striker (Owen is crocked too, again) in my team, but what the heck it's a LONG season!

Posted by: Redcoat | August 13, 2007 9:35 AM | Report abuse

Redcoat, it wouldn't come as a surprise to see our season opener 3-0 at halftime, just like the Skins game this past Saturday. Defense vs defense.

How's y'all's punter?

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 13, 2007 9:36 AM | Report abuse

Two trades a week sure makes it hard to rebuild a fantasy roster during the season. I really shoulda invested a smidge of research in the thing last week.

Oh well. The world needs ditch-diggers, too.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 13, 2007 9:38 AM | Report abuse

I am with Nate on the def of Journeymen....the dudes Montana mentioned and we hope JC to be are quality NFL starting QBS....guys that send years starting with one team and taste some post season succsess.

Journeymen is more John Friese, Shane Mathews, Gus Ferotte types....

Posted by: chRIS larry | August 13, 2007 9:38 AM | Report abuse

Nate, I think that the gist of what Montana' and others are sayin' (if I may be so bold) is that the 'skins should value JC for what he CAN do and play to his strengths, rather than put him in a position to fail (using too much of Weird Al's timed offense) because they ask him to keep doing things he ISN'T good at.

Brunell would still be a serviceable backup (maybe even starter in Atlanta now Vick looks like he's gone for '07?) in some teams in this league, but with Saunders' playbook he's always going to look like a tap-dancin' noodle-arm because he just doesn't have the fundamentals to play the way the scheme requires.

Good coaches bring out the best in their players, not accentuate their worst bits.

Posted by: Redcoat | August 13, 2007 9:41 AM | Report abuse

chris Larry, more than half of our 'seventeen QBs since Gibbs 1.0' were definitely, definitely journeymen.

Brandon you r such a *ussy. The fact that he was not there leads one to believe that he is unconcerned about the competition at receiver which is disheartening to say the least.

Can anyone explain why we did not go after Randy "The Ball Magnet" Moss? Why Why Why? Watching JC pass to our tiny wideouts is like reminicing about my Dad playing catch with us when we were kids. They r SOOOOO small. Santana barely reached that 39 yarder over his shoulder. For Moss thats an easy catch and maybe a TD.

Posted by: Joe Gibbs | August 13, 2007 11:39 AM | Report abuse

PESPECTIVE -

1. The defense looked strong. Remember how that got us into the playoffs two years ago.

2. Offense struggled, but that is because of the O-line, particularly the left side. Samuels will be back for regular season, so we shouldn't be too concerned.

3. We will have a running game (witness Betts last year).

4. Soups is a legit starter who will protect the ball. His fumbles were concerning, but with Samuels back Soups should not be getting blindsided. Soups made some nice passes and his options will only increase once Cooley is sent out on pass routes.

Check back in after 3 preseason games (hopefully we won't have injuries, because these points become moot due to our lack of depth).
