Westbrook makes the team, Bartel released

Updated: 5:15 pm.

Tackle Clint Oldenburg, who sprained his ankle late in the Washington Redskins preseason finale on Thursday night, likely will be out for three to six weeks, according to a league source.

Oldenburg suffered a grade two sprain against the Arizona Cardinals and will most likely see Dr. James Andrews for a consultation, the source said. There is a possibility that the Redskins may place Oldenburg on injured reserve, but nothing official has been announced.

It was reported earlier this week that the Washington Redskins released special teams standout Byron Westbrook, but two team sources said Saturday that Westbrook has made the team and will be the fifth cornerback on the roster in the season opener.

In the final preseason game Thursday, Westbrook looked shaky in coverage, but the Salisbury University product has been strong on special teams for the Redskins.

Westbrook, the younger brother of San Francisco 49ers running back Brian Westbrook, played in 15 games for the Redskins last season, with one start, and posted four tackles. He also had 15 special teams tackles. Westbrook spent all of the 2007 and 2008 seasons on the Redskins practice squad.

Quarterback Richard Bartel was released, according to a league source, a move that became likely when the Redskins recently signed third string quarterback John Beck to a contract extension.

let's see the skins sign the 3rd string qb to a new contract last week definitely meant the end of bartel... w/ the skins trading tryon and cutting robinson, you had to figure that westbrook made the team...

I wanna see who we get to help the o-line out of all the cuts.

Posted by: farstriker | September 4, 2010 4:35 PM | Report abuse

I wonder if Henson's injury had a big effect on the Westbrook/Tryon decision.

Henson was a big-time ST guy as well. With him out I'm thinking that helped Westbrook.

Oh well. It's kind of crappy to keep a CB that can;t play CB and trade a CB that can play CB to another team...

Posted by: p1funk | September 4, 2010 4:38 PM | Report abuse

Yea, Ill take it too. Sometimes making the players your prison b'tch is good management. Tryon was worth a carton of cigs.

Can't say Schubert Farnsworth didn't deserve it.

Dude, They don't have to pay the guarantee if they sign him tonight. The guarantee is from Seattle. If the 'Skins pay him the league minimum, then Seattle has to pay him the rest of the $7 mill.

So, yeah, I'm thinking they're talking to him. He's negotiating with teams over what they'll do for him next year.

Boy, am I glad to see that DT11 made it. He played fairly well on special teams (despite the first game fumble) and he blocks well. I really hope he comes to life this season.

With all the fumbles, I thought Banks, not Terrence Austin, would be on the practice squad. The coaches will put a lot of trust in him to not lose games at critical times.

I'm confused about Westbrook. I thought he seemed hesitant when converging to the ball on defense. The coaches obviously saw something that I didn't.

I hope Donovan McNabb makes the squad. From what I heard, he's pretty good. Barring the injured ankle, he could be an asset for this team.

Williams, Riley, Morris, Austin, Cook, and Capers.

Some interesting perspectives on cutting 4th+ round draft picks. Here's mine. I think that it's great if we cut late rounders, that means the coaches think the guys we have are better than 4th+ round rookies. I'm alright with that.

So Denver let go of Brandon Stokely, and more surprisingly, DE Jarvis Green. Brandon isn't much by way of talent, but it's reassuring to a QB to look over at him and know that in a couple seconds, he'll be in position, exactly where he's supposed to be, ready to catch the ball if need be.

Jarvis was a dumb signing.

As far as Bruce Allen's draft lineup, he probably did OK. Picked up Trent Williams, Donovan McNabb, Perry Riley, Adam Carriker, three practice squad candidates, and Dennis Morris.

Austin, Cook, and Capers were all expected to be project players, and many predicted them to the practice squad right from the beginning. I think that Morris is the only true dissapointment in the group so far. I don't think you could consider this a bad draft for Allen given the few and mostly late round picks that he had.

1 - Williams
2 - Brown
3 - Rabach
4 - Dockery
5 - Hicks
6 - Heyer
7 - Lichtensteiger
8 - Montgomery

Most teams keep 9 + a LS. So is Oldenburg making the squad? Or are they looking at a player waived elsewhere?

Saying that 1/2 the draftees made the roster based on the notion that there are reports that the Skins want to keep Austin, Cook, and Capers on the PS is a stretch. Saying that Trent Williams is a good pick is kind of dumb given he was the 4th overall pick. So of the 5 OTHER guys drafted, apparently only 1 was good enough to crack the 53 man roster. The fullback Morris got beaten out by a converted LB; Austin got beaten out by 4 or 5 waiver wire free agents or UDFA's; Cook and Capers got beaten out by guys we surely never wanted to see in the lineup last year. Face it - it was a weak draft.

The window of opportunity for the Vikes is TODAY, as Favre's ankle can be jerry-rigged and mummified only so far..If Housh wants an extended deal , he should sign with the Skins..

Posted by: frak | September 4, 2010 6:11 PM

I think their window of opportunity closed when they lost in the playoffs last year. They should have gone after McNabb. Favre isn't going to play many games this year.

Posted by: beep-beep | September 4, 2010 6:16 PM

What makes you think that Vikes missed their chance at McNabb. It's possible they get him next year w/o any compensation.

Being on the PS for a year counts towards NFL tenure plus with the way coordinators hop around it's a great way to get a jump on a team's system for offseason OTAs.

Looks like Gatewood made the squad from reports I'm seeing. Maybe playing with the Steelers 3-4 helped him impress Haslett some... u never know.

Not sure I understand your reasoning. I don't count the guys who may or may not wind up on the practice squad. Here's who I do count:

Round One: Trent Williams
Round Two: Donovan McNabb (partial credit -- another pick involved from another year)
Round Three: No pick, since it was used last season
Round Four: Perry Riley
Round Five: Adam Carriker

And that's it. Four of eight. That's not fair?

Way to miss the point as usual. Notice I said "NFL check" as opposed to any check. It still doesn't change the fact that a PS player didn't make the team, which is what was being discussed.

Posted by: learnedhand1 | September 4, 2010 6:38 PM | Report abuse

I think PS players make about $70 - 80K if they're on the PS for the whole year. The lowest paid guys on the 53 man roster make closer to $300k for the year.

Posted by: thinker11 | September 4, 2010 6:38 PM | Report abuse

The reason I don't count practice squad guys is because it's too easy for GMs to stash rookies who will probably never make the club. Makes the GM look smarter than he really was.

Not saying that's the case with Capers, Cook, and Austin. Of the three, Austin looked the best in camp. But as to whether any of them will ever have an NFL career in Washington, I can't predict.

That Morris for Hall Davis trade -- I understand the NFLPA is still looking into it (I hesitate to use the term 'investigating', but that's probably what it is). The issue is whether the two teams were trying to avoid salary obligations to players they drafted.

Probably just my syntax. I figured everybody understood about Morris being traded and subsequently cut. So I counted that as a wasted pick. Maybe I should have said 'picked up (and in one case, dropped).

Looking at it from the standpoint of GM performance, IMO it's about average. The first-round pick should be a starter, and is. The second pick brought another starter, but one in his 30's. The fourth-rounder brought a reserve who'll no doubt play some. The fifth rounder went for a former high pick with an injury history. Morris was a bust and the others are to be determined.

I'm afraid I can't agree. A good GM uses picks to strengthen his team, and that includes trading some of them. Question is, what did you get in the trade? If you got a good player, what's to complain about? On the other hand, if you send your second rounder to Miami for Jason Taylor, you can expect to hear about it for a long, long time.

Even if Miami turns around and uses it to draft Pat White, who they cut yesterday.

Fine. Let's go by your criteria.

Their 1st round and 4th round picks are going to make the 53 man roster. One will start from Day 1 at arguable our biggest area of need (LT).

Of the other 4 picks from rounds 6-7, 2-3 will likely make the practice squad.

How is that a bad draft? Unless you can show us that picks in Rounds 6-7 typically make a 53-man roster, I'd say it's a pretty good draft; maybe average draft at worst.

Truthfully, we will not know whether it was a good or bad draft for a few years. You cannot base a draft analysis only upon how many players made the team. We will only know the success of our draft when we see what all of these guys do in the coming years.

Another factor that must be considered is whether we passed over other players that made teams and contributed when we took Capers, Cook, Austin, etc. etc. Maybe there were not any other good players available when we made our picks.

Finally, you cannot ignore players acquired via trade when considering the success of the draft.

No, you sure can't. You probably can't even reasonably ignore the FAs signed by the GM, either, at least in terms of evaluating his success in putting together a team for that season.

Of course, if somebody has an axe to grind against Bruce Allen, none of this will dissuade them.

People evaluate a draft class at three stages: first, when you draft them, in terms of perceived value (the most subjective); second, on cutdown day, when you make out your season-opening roster; and last, at the end of their third year of play.

"Another factor that must be considered is whether we passed over other players that made teams and contributed when we took Capers, Cook, Austin, etc. etc. Maybe there were not any other good players available when we made our picks."

That's a pretty unfair way to evaluate a GM. There are always players you didn't pick who perform better than the ones you did -- in every draft, for every team. The question should be, could the GM reasonably have been expected to know that Player X would turn out to be better than Player Y? Tom Brady should certainly have gone much higher than the sixth round, but how come none of the GMs saw that (including New England's for five rounds?)

This is basically the discussion we had about picking those receivers ahead of DeSean Jackson. The guy was passed on 48 times, suggesting that as dumb as Vinny was, he was no dumber than the vast majority of his colleagues.

Also on Saturday, longtime offensive line coach Alex Gibbs quietly and abruptly retired from the Seahawks' coaching staff, just eight days before the season opener against the San Francisco 49ers. A team spokesman said the 69-year-old Gibbs was "worn out."

Instead of releasing him why didn't they put him on IR or the PUP list to give him a chance to re-energize himself?

++++This is basically the discussion we had about picking those receivers ahead of DeSean Jackson. The guy was passed on 48 times, suggesting that as dumb as Vinny was, he was no dumber than the vast majority of his colleagues.++++++

It's not really fair to say that Vinny was no dumber than the majority of his colleagues because not every GM was in the market for a WR. I don't think Atlanta is too disappointed they got Matt Ryan or Tennessee for getting Chris Johnson.

The problem is, Vinny was so in the market for receivers that he took three of them in the 2nd round, and two of them went before Jackson.

AKA "big fat jerky old dude whom I hope develops bloody polyps on his colon, cancerous yellow ulcers on his rectum and purple puss filled warts about the rim of his grotesquely underemployed peen."

If the 2008 draft was held tomorrow, D Jack would be a top 10 pick, DT would be a 7th, Fred Davis would be a 3rd, and MK be an UFA.

Re Vinny and receivers: Vinny was an idiot because he didn't make DJackson on of the two WR picks. He said that they believed Jackson was more NFL ready than Kelly and DT. That being the case, why wasn't he one of the picks? Size be damned if a sjker can play (and play well) in the NFL right now.

But Shanahan runs the football operation, so it will be his decision alone on how to further humiliate the two-time all-pro under performer. Easier said than done. AH always has the optio of jaking it and putting MS between a rock and hard place.

1. If MS plays him as a sub and he jakes it the team is hurt both on the field and off.

2. If MS plays him as a starter then it looks like AH won the pissing war. And who's to say he won't act up again at some point in the future?

3. If he suspends him a la TO or Keyshawn where would that get you? In order to withhold salary you have to show cause which would just intensify and prolong a distraction that everyone is already sick of.

4. MS can outright cut him and be done with his sorry ass.

At this point optio 4., while by no means appealing, seems to be the best available. Just release the bastid. Don't even bother trying to get a 6th or 7th or a warm body in a trade.

That AH was ever our best D lineman speaks volumes about the Redskins inability to cultivate talent from within.

While my man made a reputation for himself in Tennessee he began his precipitous descent well before he took his last snap as a Titan.

If I'm Shanny, however, I take the opposite approach to punishing the big guy. Instead of not putting him out there with the first team, play him into the ground until he either performs as advertised or suffers an injury owing to his poor physical conditioning.

Teams who picked players before DeSean Jackson who probably wish they'd take him instead:

St Louis Rams (Chris Long, Donnie Avery)
Miami Dolphins (Philip Merling)
Oakland Raiders (Darren McFadden)
KC Chiefs (Glenn Dorsey)
NY Jets (Vernon Gholston)

Detroit Lions (Gos Cherilus, Jordy Dizon)

SD Chargers (Antoine Cason)
Seattle Seahawks (L. Jackson, J. Carlson)
SF 49ers (Kentwan Balmer, C. Rachal)
GB Packers (Jordy Nelson)
Minnesota Vikings (Tyrell Johnson)

I'm guessing if any of the above teams had a clue that Jackson would turn out as good as he did, they'd have picked him regardless of need. Wouldn't you?

Because unfortunately he's not one of Kyle Shanahan's little pets, so he didn't have someone lobbying Daddy to keep him around.

John Beck and Malcolm Kelly, on the other hand, should wear poodle collars that say "I (heart) Kyle" around Redskins Park.

Also according to this Logan Paulsen indeed made the roster.

He did. So 3 TEs and 2 FBs, although I would think that this isn't a final 53.

I'd expect a few changes has we dig thru the waiver wire.

Suddenly I have a bad feeling about this.

Certainly no major surprises in the cuts.

Banks over Austin is a minor surprise. One factor is his speed/agility of course. Also, I think the skins might have considered that Austin is a virtual clone of Armstrong, and didn't feel the need to keep two players with such similar size and talents on the active roster.

I'm sure that keeping Westbrook over Tryon was purely for special teams purposes.

You're obviously the pimply faced, flat chested girl whose homecoming date was stolen by the sophomore skank who puts out. Don't worry honey, you'll get your period soon enough. Odd that your parents would name a girl Franco though. I guess your mother had a thing for old dirty communist rulers. I'm sure he turned her out real nice.

I have a different take. Assuming that Henson could be back 4-6 weeks, if the team had wanted him to be a part of the active 53, then the move makes sense. Henson could be brought back sometime during the season. IR would take that possibility away.

Fat Albert has created his problems all by himself, and he could have ended the situation at any time. Skipping the OTAs would have been an irritation to Shanahan, but I don't think that would have created any real animosity from him. OTAs after all are voulantary.

Minicamp is manditory. If he had shown up then as he is contractually required to do, he could have ended the situation right then, but he did not.

If he had shown up to training camp in shape and able to pass his conditioning test (one that is a standard for MANY teams), he could have ended the situation right then, but he did not.

If he had been in proper condition, it is less likely that he would have developed the knee irritation, that kept him from being able to pass the test and prevent him from practicing for 10 days, thus setting himself further behind his teammates. His rhabdomyolysis was also likely caused by his lack of conditioning, causing him to mis yet more practice, setting him yet further behind. If he had put in the effort to be properly conditioned, all of this could have been avoided, and the situation would have ended, but he did not.

Despite all of this, he felt that his experience and talent entitled him to a spot as a starter. Unhappy with being played in the third quarter with the second string against Baltimore, he mouthed off to the press, furter exacerbating the situation. If he had kept his mouth shut, he could have ended the situation, but he did not.

In the game against Arizona, he clearly played without effort throughout the entire game. Once again he took the low road, and continued to give the coaching staff reason to be unhappy with him. He could have played with effort and determination to prove that he belongs with the starters, ending the situation once and for all. But he did not.

At any point, Albert could have ended the situation simply by doing the things that he is supposed to do, contractually obligated to do, the things he has been paid more than any player in the history of his position to do. Nothing more than that has been asked of him. BUT HE HAS NOT!

So the situation continues....

I think I'll keep my crow simmering for a while yet. My promise was to eat said crow if Albert was still on the roster at the start of the season. We're not there quite yet. He has still not showed any reason why he deserves to be a Redskin.

There is a reason why we don't hear of more NFL players coming down with rhabdomyolysis. Most NFL types realize that keeping oneself in good shape is good for the goose and good for the gander.

Kaasmaster, first of all, well said. However at the end of the day, the Skins have the ultimate power to end this journey we are on, and that's by cutting Haynesworth. They failed to do so, again, today. If Haynesworth is to be a part of this team, and by their action the coaching staff wants him on the team, then it does the other 52 active, 8 practice squad members a disservice for sources (I assume either a coach(es) or assistant(s)) to trash Haynesworth in the press. If he's suck a sh!thead to work with...move on without him and let's get the focus on the cowboys.

No more than at the beginning of camp. We're definitely more talented than last year, and some guys who played a lot then are backups now, as they should be.

The problem is the same for every team: depth if somebody goes down.

Biggest surprise keepers in roster moves:

-QB John Beck over Richard Bartel
-RB Keiland Williams over Ryan Torian
-WR Roydell Williams over Terrence Austin
-TE Logan Paulsen (whoa, this dude was cut then brought back!)
-G Kory Lichtensteiger (at least he's an upgrade over Vinny's 3rd round draft pick, Chad Rinehart)
-NT Anthony Bryant (shocking! Redskins keeping 8 DL in a 3-4 scheme?)
-CB Byron Westbrook over S Tyrone Carter

Redskins roster moves analysis
By: John Keim
Examiner Staff Writer

1. Good for Brandon Banks. I’m surprised only because he dropped the ball so often. But, man, that speed. It always drew you back to him. And watching his footwork on some of those pass receptions was impressive. Still, I would not feel comfortable with him deep in the opener vs. Dallas. He can improve with ball security; but the strip looked too easy. Still, that speed…and when in doubt, might as well take a guy who has something extraordinary to offer.

2. They made the right call at running back. A couple weeks ago I’d heard that Keiland Williams likely was a practice squad type. But nobody else seized the No. 3 RB position. Ryan Torain was way too ordinary considering how much we all heard that Mike Shanahan loved him. Can’t run that upright; went down too easily. Williams is intriguing and has good hands out of the backfield. He fits the mold of a Shanahan find: a guy who had talent but who, for whatever reason, did not always get the chances in college. Williams was in a crowded backfield at LSU and therefore was never a full-time guy.

3. I’m disappointed for Lee Vickers. The guy has now been cut nine times in five years. Always seems to be the odd guy out. But he’ll keep plugging.

4. Glad for Anthony Bryant. He not only deserved to make the roster, he should be playing. The coaches obviously know 100 times more than I do – and that’s a conservative estimate – but I don’t know what Maake Kemoeatu has shown to suggest he’ll be a quality starter. Yes, he’s coming off an injury, but it concerns me how much he was moved up front. Almost as if he didn’t have his leg strength fully back. Anyway, Bryant does. He kept the linebackers clean; Arizona, for example, could not get to the LBs because they’d have to hold their double team a second longer. I like him. And with the uncertainty surrounding Albert Haynesworth, it was necessary to keep two at this spot.

5. I’m mildly surprised that Jeremy Jarmon made it, but I do think he has potential. Talked to some who thought he might be better in a 4-3, but the kid has some talent and plays hard. He, too, is still recovering from surgery (knee). And he was seen limping while sprinting just a few days ago in practice. I had heard last week that other teams anticipated him either being traded or cut. They were checking him out because of that info, I know that for a fact. I won’t say the Redskins owed it to Jarmon, but here’s the thing: he was told he would play outside linebacker, then he was told he’s going to end and had to gain 30-35 pounds, then he had to fully recover from knee surgery, then he had to learn a new defense. He did it without complaint. Guys like that are good to have around.

Posted by: beep-beep | September 5, 2010 6:19 AM | Report abuse

6. I was mildly surprised by Terrence Austin, too. He was very steady, ran good routes, caught the ball well and always seemed to make someone miss after his catches. But Banks’ speed prevailed. If you’re going to take a chance, take it on speed. Austin will be there if someone else fails.

7. Selvish Capers and Erik Cook did not deserve to be on the 53-man roster, but both showed enough reasons why they should at least make the practice squad. Cook improved a lot and was solid at center vs. backups. Capers showed athleticism, but had some rough, rough games.

8. Good for Byron Westbrook, who had to answer rumors about being cut Wednesday. Only he wasn’t. Had heard a couple weeks ago that he was ahead of Justin Tryon and nothing clearly changed. Tryon did seem to have a better game than him Thursday, but the body of work to that point clearly favored Westbrook.

9. Roydell Williams made the roster and I’m guessing it’s because of his size. Really, I’m not sure why. But one league source said the other day that if Devin Thomas were dealt or cut that Williams would make the team. That would give them a big receiver. So we’ll see.

10. Only three tackles? Artis Hicks can play tackle, too, if the Redskins lose two in one game. Will Robinson improved in camp, but in the Buffalo game he was really bad; he kept crossing his feet in protection. Still, I’m surprised he was cut. But not that surprised because he was a fringe guy to begin with. Stephon Heyer looked better than the other backup linemen. Now ain’t that a hoot.

11. I have a feeling the Redskins will make more moves. That’s why they kept us waiting so long tonight.

12. I’m not sold on Devin Thomas being here for the long term. Thomas has matured as much as anyone over the past couple years. After his first year I thought he was going to be a Michael Westbrook type, a guy who was up and down with the media and ducked during bad times. Thomas has answered every question I’ve ever had and does so in a polite manner, even when people ask questions about his job or losing a starting role. And that’s all great. But the bottom line is that this staff had him on the bubble. One coach said three times on Tuesday that Thomas needed to have a good game. So his job security is not tight here. He can help himself with a big opener; and the area he might help the most is as a returner. I like him there; he follows the wedge and hits the holes hard.

13. How about that 2008 10-member draft class, huh? Three remain: Thomas, Fred Davis and Kareem Moore. In fact, the Redskins will have only seven draft picks from the past three drafts on their roster. New regime, I know.

14. Not surprised by Howard Green’s release. Strong guy in the middle, but just didn’t run well. At all. And maybe had the thickest calves I’d ever seen.

15. My Buckeye brethren took a hit as Anderson Russell and Darrion Scott both were cut. I thought Scott had a chance and if the Redskins had traded Jarmon, I’m guessing he stays. But they opted for youth and I can’t blame them, though I did think Scott played well at times. As for Russell, he’s a practice squader.

16. Early in the day several outlets had reported that TE Logan Paulsen had been released. Turns out he wasn't. Last guy that happened to here? Ryan Clark. Paulsen deserved to be on the squad; blocked well.

This quote, in and of itself, really explains the fault lines expert observers see in the team.

3 of our past number 1 picks--Campbell, Landry, Rogers--have been less than stellar.

The middle rounders have not impressed as well or are gone.

Too few 'diamond in the rough' types have been shaped into starters.

The clueless trading away of picks to acquire someone else's used-to-be Pro Bowler (and in some cases, not even that)
proved short-sighted and feckless.

You have to hope the new regime is able to turn the tables on the last regime's bad talent for finding good, talented players.

If not, the bad old days will still be with us.

Except the Wizards of Redskin Park will all have new names attached to the same ol same ol bad results.

Not quite "in and of itself." The 500 pound gorilla in the room (can I say that?) is in this quote from Mista Mayor in today's print edition:

"Haynesworth was "awful" Thursday during the Cardinals' 20-10 victory at University of Phoenix Stadium, said two of the team sources who recently reviewed game film. It often appeared he gave little effort while participating in 49 of the Redskins' 55 defensive plays. On the few occasions he did play hard, the two sources said, Haynesworth failed to adhere to the principles of the new 3-4 scheme. He was credited with four tackles, including three unassisted."

Bravo to the Skins coaching staff for creating more misdirection for Dallas week. Now that it's clear the whole "will McNabb start" shenanigans was a ploy that has played out, they came up with a newer more brilliant one - will AH be active against Dallas???

He didn't play much in practice!!! (pay no mind that he played the WHOLE preseason finale, and maybe they wanted to give him and the balky knee a light rest).

This one works like a charm b/c it feeds off of a long history of real life issues and drama, and so has an air truth. I'm fully expecting anonymous coaches to continue feeding the press "bad" reports on AH, and AH answering with sulking "no comments", until opening kickoff when AH starts at RDE and puts another couple Dallas linemen on IR.

1. I am so disappointed in RI.
Nothing new since about 4 PM yesterday.
How can this be quality sports journalism / reporting? Honestly, I am not even wanting to be a critic, but the WaPost is really going down hill.

2. Watched the replay of AH vs. Cardinals.
Coaches have to be furious.
It was as if he was only trying to avoid injury. Most plays he would merely stand up and extend his arms on the snap, trying to stay upright.

3. Human Egos can be such a dangerous thing. I want the new regime to be successful; yet those are two enormous egos in Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan. I am so hopeful they are getting rid of nor giving guys a hard time who were not "there guys" they brought to DC. I have in mind: DT11, AH92 etc.

4. I think I've been spending way too much time last night and this morning thinking about Redskins. I have misplaced values. Think I should go to a church this morning I have not attended in a several months. Worship service begins at 10:00 am.

I hear you as I too doubt that modern, professional sports teams try to 'fool' each other with media stories.

Why?: videotape

On NFL Access, Warren Sapp broke down a lot of AH's performance in the Cards' preseason.

He and other commentators say that Prince Al is playing this preseason like he doesn't give a sh!t about the scheme.

Sapp reviewed plays were it was obvious AH was making about 40% effort.

Which is a shame as he's been effortlessly paid with $21 million dollars.

Posted by: TWISI | September 5, 2010 8:40 AM | Report abuse

Seriously,

The last preseason game is universally acknowledged as the most meaningless football game in the universe - what do we all ask for? For our players to come home without injury.

So AH gets out there for some conditioning run and reps at RDE. Does he go full blow? Of course not, because he too is trying to get back home without the use of crutches. (See Robert Henson as a sad example of someone "playing their guts out" in the last preseason game and having it backfire on him).

The only reason for the staff to roll him out for an entire preseason game is because they fully intend on starting him and he does in fact need (1) game conditioning and (2) reps at RDE for scheme's sake.

The fact that he practiced little the day afterwards was entirely predictable given the fact that he played the whole preseason game and so did not get the rest that the other starters did - he does, after all, have a slightly balky knee that does no one any good if it flares up the week before Opening Day.

Deactivation? Come on. At this point if you are planning on deactivating him, and throwing this whole drama back to square one, and ressurecting all of the lockerroom/media distractions, then why not just trade him for a 6th rounder or cut him altogether?

Yesterday would have been the day to do it.

I think this quote below from DT sort of sums up the problem with him:

"You come in as a rook, you come into a franchise, and you expect to be somebody they want to keep around and develop and become a main contributor," Thomas said. "But it's been a rocky road for some of us. It really has."

As a rook, the only thing you should "expect" is that you will need to work your butt off. There are no guarantees, especially not in the NFL. It seems DT11 thought that since he was a high draft pick, he would be around regardless.

And "it's been a rocky road"? Really? And how much of that was your own doing DT11 based upon your attitude and "expectation." This is what Shanny has been fighting against with DT11.

Universally acknowledged as the most meaningless game in the history of football, where the guys fighting for roster spots 50-53 duke it out.

If AH gave 40%, then I give him credit.

Maybe he should have gone balls-to-the-wall all game long on every play just like Robert Henson...oh, by the way, what ever did happen to Robert Henson??

Interesting... How does this compare to other teams? (I'm asking seriously... I don't know.)

This is piss poor compared to well run organizations. Teams like the Colts, Steelers, Ravens, SD and Eagles are good most years because they build a strong core through the draft. This is why the team will be mediocre for the next few years. When you don't build through the draft there is no continuity as turnover is high.

Well, I do recall Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love God with all of your heart, soul and mind. So, I will keep your advice to me about half-hearted effort in mind. I will try to pay close attention at all times to when they are reading the Bible or teaching the Bible.

"The coaches are definitely right, he did look horrible the other night (as most everyone on this blog noted). I still hate the thought of holding him out of the game.
Posted by: HokiesSkins"

Well, if he's playing horrible, how much could it hurt the team if he stays on the bench?

I'm not a big predictor, but I did get this one: Albert is going to continue along the path he chose back when he found out they were going to play a 3-4. That is, he's going to play hard when he wants to, and not when he doesn't. We're not going to be able to rely on Albert's performance. A good game one week does not imply a turnaround in his attitude.

You have to give the guy credit (at least 40%) for consistency in his inconsistency.

What Albert really wants? Out of Washington.

Is AH92 playing at 20% of his potential really worth keeping on the roster? The man
seems to have no pride, or any desire to be a
Redskin. Let's stick a fork in him and move on. Get someone in there who's 100% hungry and not a malcontent multi-millionaire with a
huge attitude problem. ...we're not being spoofed here either...

Hey Beep-Beep, are you really Talent-Evaluator?

Posted by: RedskinRay1 | September 5, 2010 9:14 AM

I started as Talent-Evaluator in the days of Jason La Canfora when he always quoted me -- "A talent evaluator from another team said..." When J Reid took over, he stopped quoting me so I changed my name to League_Source so I could be quoted again -- "A league source said that ..." Finally gave that up when I realized that the only way I would ever have the last word up here is to be the last word: beep beep.

I will agree that he does give inconsistent effort and probably will make some mistakes in the 3-4 system. That being said, there is not another D lineman on the planet that gets double and triple teamed more than him. We need him to take up blockers to keep our backers clean to come and make tackles. His ability is why he is still here and will not be going anywhere. Carriker, Gholston and Holliday are "nice" players, but Haynesworth is a monster. He was clearly dogging it because it was a preseason game and was not pleased with having to play the full preseason game (and lets be clear, I'm not defending the guy...if the coach tells you to go out and play the entire 4th preseason game, you should do it). But once the regular season starts, he will be a difference maker.

"This is piss poor compared to well run organizations. Teams like the Colts, Steelers, Ravens, SD and Eagles are good most years because they build a strong core through the draft. This is why the team will be mediocre for the next few years. When you don't build through the draft there is no continuity as turnover is high.Posted by: srobert1117"

The thing that really jacks up turnover is when a team undergoes regime-change. If you recall, first thing Allen and Shanny did was to release a bunch of vets and begin signing a clutch of free agents (like those RBs). That's typical. New Crew in the FO means new crew on the field.

Just happened to glance at the Indy roster and noted a couple of names from the Skins' past. Kyle DeVan was a rook FA here in '08 who was cut early, went to the Jets' practice squad, then last year became a starter at guard in Indy. Cody Glenn -- you remember Cody, right? -- spent last year on the Colts' practice squad and now looks like he's on the 53 man roster. Of course the Colts have a lot of players on IR -- 8 players, including (suspiciously) 6 DBs...

So maybe you could argue that Washington gives up on players too soon? It's anybody's guess.

Kind of surprised to see the Steelers cut Justin Hartwig, even though he got beat out by Pouncey in camp. Salary had a lot to do with it. They also cut last year's 3rd round guard, Kraig Urbik. Kept two WRs from this year's draft, possibly reflecting how much help they need at that position.

Flozell Adams is going to start for Pittsburgh at tackle. Now that's what I call not much of an upgrade.

OK, Grasshopper. Imagine that Albert's goal is to get released, rather than traded, so he's a FA. He's already collected the lion's share of the $$, so losing salary is not a big issue for him. He can 1) experience a recurrence of a little-known medical condition, say, rhabdomyolysis, which puts him on the bench, or 2) he can play as well as he did against Arizona, which also puts him on the bench. Once there, a few well-timed interviews should make him enough of a distraction for Dan Snyder to begin pushing for his release. Or failing that, a trade to a team of Albert's choice, where he miraculously regains his health and motivation to play, for a reasonable salary now that he's set for life.

Why would any other club sign him, you demand to know? Because a) he's not that expensive any more, and b) they figure his problems in Washington were largely self-motivated, and c) they remember how great he was, and fantasize about that the way you do.

Yeah the guy played half ass, but shouldn't his half ass be better than some 3rd string lineman? If he was this great monter DL like everyone claims wouldn't you think he should have dominated in the first qtr. with at least two sacks, a couple of tackles and demanded triple team? he was getting block one on one. the guy is living on a past and everybody keeps thinking he can turn it on when he wants, I think he has turn it on but notice he doesn't have it anymore, and than fakes the "not going full speed " cliche.

Now I'm no bettor, but that's a bet I'd have to take. For two reasons. First, Snyder is above all a public relations and marketing guy. The Skins have made a hash of his public image (compare it to Ted Leonsis', for instance). Albert is a painful reminder of a painful episode. If the conflict escalates in the media, at some point he'll push for a move. And hard.

Two, the $21 mil is already gone. Snyder might have hopes of getting back a piece of it, but how likely is that?

If the $$ were still in Dan's business account, things would be different. But they've been gone since when -- April?

Making it look like Albert won has it's advantages too. Remember the CBA negotiations. If (or should I say when) the Fat Albert situation is used as a bargaining tool against the NFLPA, the union will probably have to give up concessions which will make it harder for players to act this way in the future. This could mean Snider and the other owners will keep more of their money in their own pockets in the future. I'm sure the other owners would back Snider on this because it is to the benefit of all of them. There is a bigger business picture than just the money that has already been paid to Fat Albert.

Good stuff here p1, but I'm not feeling your AH take.

Unleash him on Dallas? When AH starts at RDE and puts another couple Dallas linemen on IR?

Coaches may game plan for him, but it's usually a plan to run at him 2x in a row and watch him head to the sidelines.

For a guy that averages 3 tackles a game, 3.5 sacks per season, and has 6 forced fumbles in 8 yrs...Pretty sure Def. Coordinators are loosing much sleep over whether he plays or not.

I actually had to go to Redskins.Com to confirm that (as of now) Logan Paulsen is on the squad at TE. He'd been rumored cut and still could go if the team finds a better TE today. But I like the kid's potential, he's big and he was a stud at UCLA before injuries.

And, as I pointed out yesterday, the 'skins will need blockers to help out Trent Williams against elite pass rushers.

So will Fred Davis please call RI and wake them up for further updates? can't wait to see who clears waivers and makes the PS.

I most worry the very promising Austin (also a UCLA product) will get snapped up.

Hoping Selvish, Cook, and Henson can be PSed. Sure would like to read what released "injured" does to player's status. Because Henson, should be retained by this team.

Shanahan obviously figured someone else would take a chance on Banks if they let him go.

With his size and fumbleitis, don't see him as full time returner, but used at key moments when a big return is needed

1. AH's effectiveness cannot be measured in stats. If he is taking up 2-3 blockers every play, he may not make a tackle or a sack, but he frees up Fletch, Osackpo, Rocky and others to make plays. Taking up blockers is even more important in a 3-4.

2. No way the Skins outright release AH unless he pays back a bunch of money. If he does not agree to pay back some of the bonus, I think Snyder and Shannie would be more content sending his butt home and continuing to pay his salary, definitely for this season and maybe for the life of his contract, just depending on how poorly he behaves. Shannie and Snyder know that AH wants to be released, that's why he will never get it.

3. If we do trade him, I suspect we will send him to a place where he will be in hell and we won't have to see him. Buffalo comes to mind.

Posted by: Chia_Pet | September 5, 2010 12:01 PM | Report abuse

Let me get this right - the Fat Albert Apologists (or is that Sycophants) want us to retain him because he draws double teaming. Another reason to retain his services is because he's the best player on the field in his position.

First point - double teaming is meaningless when he allows them to go by after initial contact. If anyone noticed Fat Albert was pushed onto his arse more than one time last preseason game and on at least one occasion, it was when he was SINGLE TEAMED by a SMALLER player! To me it would seem that a double team would be a meaningful use of a player if he RETAINED the double team thus allowing other players to be utilized more effectively; no one on this board can honestly say Fat Albert retains his double teaming long enough to make even top tier teammates more effective given Fat Albert's current mindset and condition. Let's face it - when Fat Albert has his bipolar upside working, he is only 50% motivated to work hard. Given that he cannot be trusted, I'd say the upside for him is 10% max. Do you want to base a defense on a player you can trust 10% of the time to do the right thing?

Second point, Fat Albert is said to be one of the best players in his position. Yeah right! 10% of the time he is great. 40% of the time he's on the field waving to be pulled off. 50% of the time he's underachieving. He is good for one game a season as a terror. The rest of the time he cannot be trusted, respected, or counted on.

We have Fat Albert because of poor decisions in a past regime and we've exacerbated this situation by TRUSTING him that $21 million more would buy his effort; it has become apparent that Fat Albert is a liar and a slackard. He cannot be trusted; he shows more spite toward his own team and teammates than he shows toward opponents.

There is no compelling operational reason for Fat Albert to be on the field, activated, or on the team. His roster spot should be utilized retaining a player who gives a damn and who wants to kick the opponents' butt. And none of that can you find in Fat Albert. None.

POSTED BY Hokies skins

Sure, when he tries he takes up more than one blocker. But then that so exhausts his out of shape arse, he has to take himself out of the game for a few plays.

Against Ariz, he took up one blocker who had time to do his nails and catch up on his Tweets at the same time.

AZ third stringers were drawing straws to see who got to go against him.

That kind of effort by the team's highest paid player has to have a devastating effect on player morale.

Of course, there's always the chance pride will rear it's head and he will attempt to separate Romo from his.

If he puts out a half-hearted effort against Dallas, his butt should be benched for the rest of the season.

Yes, hokie. It's a team game. Although I'm not willing to give as much credit to AH as most are.

•Total Pressures by #98 & #99 (Sk, Ht or Hr) = 108
•Times Haynesworth on field = 57
•Times Haynesworth not on field =51
Of the 57 times he was on the field, the vast majority of the time (43 times) he was playing DRT. Therefore, from looking at the 108 positive instances of Orakpo and Carter pressure I found a maximum of 5 where Haynesworth may have had some impact over and above what may be expected from a standard DT.

Of the 26 sacks, AH was on the field for 13 and remember he played the 2nd most snaps of any DL.

Let me say this, I am no AH apologist. He does lack work ethic and he basically stole $21 mill. But, everyone forgets that he ranked 2nd on the D line in snaps played last season.

You apparently did not watch the Jets game, because he was drawing double and triple teams every time and still pushing his way into the backfield. He makes a difference when he is on the field. I don't think that can be denied.

My take on the WR situation:

This team has no one at the WR position that a defense would fear, but the same holds true for McNabb's former targets, James Thrash, Freddie Mitchell and Todd
Pinkston.

Part of me wants to go after Vincent Jackson. He's young, atheltic and would be the clear #1 receiver on this team, but he's a risk and would be too expensive.

As Skins fans, we are victims of a FA hangover from years gone by. Cerrato woulda give the Chargers next year's first and a fourth for Jackson and made him the highest paid WR in NFL history.

Finally, someone in the Redskins' FO are saying, let's stand down and perhaps draft the #1 guy next year. Maybe Anthony Armstrong is that guy we've always said the Skins need to "develop".

We've got Cooley and Davis (awful quiet in preseason).

While I'd love to have a young, fast, big, true #1 wide receiver, I'm content with going into the season without breaking the bank or more picks to get him. TJ Whosyourmama may deserve a looksee.

I'd qualify that statement to read, "he makes a difference when he is on the field -- sometimes." He sure didn't against AZ on Thursday.

I was never worried about McNabb missing the Dallas game. It is a "phew" moment to see it in print though.

I'm curious to see what the new point spread is on this game. the Dallas o-line resembles ours from last year.

Also, I've never seen predictions so scattered for the Redskins. Some, like SI have us going 10-6, Antonio pierce thinks we'll win the division, and some have us in 4th.

This is going to be a fun year!

I agree with everyone who is upset and disappointed by no new entry on RI since 4pm yesterday. After all, this is one of the top 5 non in season periods as far as news etc. But really, is anyone surprised?

After the Wise thing and the last week of the skins FO using Reid like a drunk virgin on prom night, coupled with the numerous faulty/wrong posts about who is being cut etc. it appears that the Sports department may finally be wising up.

At the very least they are probably holding all of Reid's posts for thorough fact checking....And at best they have fired The Mayor and his crew.

Oh well, I can dream. In the meantime I'm replacing my RI bookmark with Redskins Confidential. Keim is heads and shoulders the best guy on the beat.

My last post on AH for now. See previous statement about him playing 2nd most defensive snaps last season. See also previous comments about him giving no effort in AZ. Come Dallas and regular season, he will turn the effort on.

I wouldn't really worry about the WR situation.

We all know mcNabb's history with so/so receivers.

from pft:
Sixth-round pick Ted Larsen was claimed off waivers by the Buccaneers, according to Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com. The center was viewed as a possible challenger to Dan Koppen down the line.

I wonder if the Bucs, who were just shead of us, got him before we had a chance.

Looks like a 6-10 season this year. Skins are going to fall-behind early and often this year and McNabb will struggle to stay healthy having to play come-from-behind.

Wow.

Never thought I'd live to see the day when Cork was openly critical of RI reporting.

That's something.

Yeah, the "reporters" or "bloggers" for this site have apparently mailed it in on one of the most important days of the year in the NFL.

They figure that everyone else has already gotten their Skins news from other sources, so why bother updating here?

Why bother at all.

They should just start posting recipes up here.

It would be more useful to us. They don;t need to worry, b/c the posters will keep coming. We come to interact with each other, not to read their cut-n-paste reporting from other sources anyhow.

Not a good idea. Already too many good, reliable sources for recipes.

If Jason Reid started posting them he'd leave out ingredients, contradict himself three times on the correct order of steps, and by the time you finished the food would be stale.

If Mike Wise posted them, your pineapple upside down cake would be right side up and full or peanuts instead of pineapple.

Redskins started signing guys to the practice squad @ 12 noon. Vikes already have announced seven guys on their squad. Where's scamp to scan the tweets? If you're waiting for Jason Reid, check tomorrow's print edition.

Oddly enough, RI updates frequently on Twitter & is even now updating the Practice Squad list with Capers, Jackson & Russell signing.

The Skins owe AH $9 M guaranteed. If Cattle can kick House's butt out the door owing him $7 M, it isn't a reach for the Skins to do the same to AH.

Seriously, I can't believe we are back to killing AH because he didn't play the 4th preseason game like it was the Superbowl.

This is the kind of irrational vitriol that makes me sympathize with the big fat load.

Hey, while we are irrationally hating guys, let's call out London Fletcher, Philip Daniels, and all the rest of those lazy half-hearted prima donnas who didn't even have the stones to suit up and take the field against AZ. They left their team hanging. A real football player would have lobbied the coach until they lost their voice to get in the game and prove their worth.

I almost forgot that Albert actually began his campaign to leave on December 25, 2009, following that nasty loss to the Giants. Albert insisted he couldn't "survive another season in this system if it stays the way it is". That was Blache's 4-3 he was complaining about then, of course.

He was particularly ticked off at being fined for lateness.

Of course if AH really has a "I hate MS" jones then, if released, he would sign with the Eegs for chump change and then plant DM into early retirement the next time the two teams play.

I'm canning Salsa today:

30 tomatoes peeled and chopped
2 green bell peppers
2 red bell peppers
10 cups chopped onions
10 cloves garlic
4-5 yellow banana pepper or 1 cup chopped jalapenos
1/2-3/4 cup sugar
2 cups vinegar
8 teaspoons pickling salt
2 teaspoons black pepper
2 large cans tomato paste

Simmer 1 1/2 hr, stirring often, at the end of cooking time add 1/2 bunch of cilantro if desired.
Jar and process, 35 minutes for pint jars and 45 minutes for quart jars.
Makes 17 pints

So maybe the best AH solution for the Skins is to suspend him for the the season (a la the Eegs and TO) so that (a) he doesn't come back to haunt them and (b) he doesn't take up a spot on the roster that some productive player could fill.

3. AH is going to play him to the bitter end.

2) it's not vitriol
