What's Next, Again?

This is probably higher than the Skins would like to take a backup C/G, but they are high on Pollak, the C from Az State..

Collins, the tackle from Kansas, might make sense, too. Joe Bugel spent a lot of time working out guys at this position and thought he might be getting a stud tackle at 21 there for a minute when guys were slipping.

O Line is a definite need.

They could also make a play for a DT like Laws (Notre Dame) or Moore (Maryland) here, though originally not thinking they would be going DT, again, this early (before getting the extra picks).

Also, corner Charles Godfrey from Iowa could get a look from them with one of these picks.

It has to be DL next pick.

Posted by: marlonjohn | April 26, 2008 7:50 PM | Report abuse

we needed a te, but here? Not a good choice in my opinion. I was thinking 3-5th rnd, certainly not 2nd.

Posted by: cgarrisonsr | April 26, 2008 7:50 PM | Report abuse

Vinny thats a terrible pick. You have cooley and yoder and you go after davis, but the o-line and d-line are aging brilliant.

Posted by: Kill Me | April 26, 2008 7:51 PM | Report abuse

Perhaps he is a TE now, but has potential being moved to the OL proper.

Posted by: HaikuMan | April 26, 2008 7:51 PM | Report abuse

Fred Davis can rush the QB....Oh wait he is a TE....He can back up Cooley well

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 7:51 PM | Report abuse

Nice way to screw up a draft Vinny!!

Unless Cooley is on his way out of town (and it would be STUPID to deal him) this pick makes less than zero sense. The Redskins have GAPING holes at OL and DL and they go draft a TE that's been dropping like a rock on draft lists.

What a bunch of maroons.

Posted by: CHRIS | April 26, 2008 7:51 PM | Report abuse

That's just plain silly. You can only have so many guys on the field at once!

Posted by: kost52 | April 26, 2008 7:51 PM | Report abuse

calm down folks, we pick again in 3 more selections. Groves or Campbell will be there. This was a good pick.

Posted by: dolemite | April 26, 2008 7:51 PM | Report abuse

Vinny!!!!!!!!!! You're back in my doghouse yet again!!! YOU IDIOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: egrib | April 26, 2008 7:51 PM | Report abuse

Uh...what? Fred Davis?

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.

Posted by: CowboyH8r | April 26, 2008 7:51 PM | Report abuse

Looks like the TE is good, but why not a DL or OL? Hopefully in three picks...

Posted by: BT | April 26, 2008 7:51 PM | Report abuse

Maybe they meant to draft Fred Stubbs.

Posted by: P Diddy | April 26, 2008 7:51 PM | Report abuse

Or Fred Krueger.

Posted by: P Diddy | April 26, 2008 7:52 PM | Report abuse

How much do you wanna bet they're packaging Thomas and Cooley for Chad Johnson? I could see something moronic like that going down.

Posted by: TDawg | April 26, 2008 7:52 PM | Report abuse

ru kinnidg? as great a job as vinny did pulling off the trade, he just blew it! what will it take to draft a de/ dt with a high pick

Posted by: tnt828 | April 26, 2008 7:52 PM | Report abuse

Maybe they thought campbell would still be there in 3 picks? Philly won't take him, they just got one. I don't know, I mean we have plenty of weapons on O, it's really about campbell and blocking for him.

Posted by: sephtical | April 26, 2008 7:53 PM | Report abuse

Mike Mayock really likes Fred Davis....

Posted by: Lisa | April 26, 2008 7:53 PM | Report abuse

I don't understand that pick at ALL. We missed out on Merling...but Campbell and Groves are available. If they don't go for one with this next pick...then I will be disappointed.

Posted by: DC Fan | April 26, 2008 7:53 PM | Report abuse

Wasn't the one thing we had that was pro-bowl level a pass-catching TE ..... so we draft ... another pass-catching TE.

I mean wow.... Brian Brohm would have even surprised me less.

Way too ignore our massive need for a DE and our almost equal needs at OL and S.

Posted by: Mike C. | April 26, 2008 7:53 PM | Report abuse

Must've thought best player available.

Posted by: scampbell1975 | April 26, 2008 7:53 PM | Report abuse

I don't get it. We don't need a TE but we do need help on both lines and at CB. What gives Jasno?

Posted by: Nobcentral | April 26, 2008 7:53 PM | Report abuse

I don't understand that pick either. Was he the BPA? Could they have selected him for another team and will trade in a second? Janso what's the deal?

Posted by: Dreesq | April 26, 2008 7:53 PM | Report abuse

You watch, next pick, we take either Kelly or Sweed. You can never have too many options for JC! .....I think?

Posted by: kost52 | April 26, 2008 7:54 PM | Report abuse

Dole-You have got to be kidding. Just where is Fred Davis going to play? Can he play OT or Guard? Does he rush the QB? If the answer to both those questions is no, this is the dumbest 2nd round pick the Redskins have made in a long time, and that's saying something.

The Redskins are going to pay 2nd round money to a backup TE and have likely just made Cooley very angry with this selection. What's even dumber is Cooley is just the sort of TE that Zorn should want in a WCO.

Posted by: Chris | April 26, 2008 7:54 PM | Report abuse

I don't think Cooley's cap number makes him tradable. Cooley is the current "Mr. Redskin". Good guy on and off the field. No way they get rid of him.

Posted by: P Diddy | April 26, 2008 7:54 PM | Report abuse

SJK!?!

Does Arizona need a TE? Does Cincy need a TE? DOES ANYONE ELSE NEED A TE????

Is there something we don't know? Didn't they give Cooley an extension?

Calgon take me away!

Posted by: sfskin | April 26, 2008 7:54 PM | Report abuse

Where the heck is Davis going to play??????? Special Teams? Wow!!!!! Way to go Vinny!!!!! You ignoramous!!!! I guess we have "depth" now. Nice to know you Eckard and Yoder.... welcome to DC Davis.... certainly a CRYING NEED!!!!! Vinny! I'd line you up against the wall and shoot you myself were it legal.

next pick beter be a de

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 7:55 PM | Report abuse

Did anyone hear the ESPN review of the Fred Davis pick. I got the last end and I heard Mort (I believe) say that this pick made sense..."The skins are having a godd draft.."

Posted by: marlonjohn | April 26, 2008 7:55 PM | Report abuse

They seriously better draft Calais Campbell or another DE next or Vinny should get down on the chopping block.

Posted by: What??? | April 26, 2008 7:55 PM | Report abuse

Calm down peeps...they pick again next....funny the only people im seeing who think the last pick was bad is in this blog..EVERYONE else on tv online where ever that cover the sport think it was an excellent pick and the skins are having a good draft...the others will be there next pick...CALM DOWN!

My head hurts, maybe I should stop caring!!!

Posted by: redryan400 | April 26, 2008 7:55 PM | Report abuse

makes sense because we have a new coach and need west coast offense players. he had 881 yards, 10 touch downs and the nations top te. I know we have other needs but we have a lot of picks

Posted by: tommy | April 26, 2008 7:55 PM | Report abuse

Campbell's going to love having both Cooley and Davis as big targets in the West Coast offense.

Along with Thomas, the receiving corps has taken a huge step forward IMHO.

Posted by: SaltyDog75 | April 26, 2008 7:55 PM | Report abuse

ESPN is saying he's a good fit for Zorn's O, and Scouts inc. says this:

He lacks elite size and he is not going to be a typical inline tight end in the NFL. However, Davis possesses the athleticism and toughness to quickly emerge as an impact pass-catcher and eventually to develop into a fulltime starter. Davis is one of the only tight ends in this class that creates mismatches. If used properly and moved around in the formation, Davis should be able to use his explosiveness, physicality and quickness to give linebackers and safeties a very difficult time.

Posted by: [cc] | April 26, 2008 7:55 PM | Report abuse

Fred Davis may have a better upside compared to Betts. Zorn knows what he is doing.

Posted by: SCSkins | April 26, 2008 7:56 PM | Report abuse

I guess Mel forgot about Cooley

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 7:56 PM | Report abuse

Mike Mayock really likes Fred Davis....

All that needed to be said. BPA. I don't work for the NFL and neither do most of you I imagine.

Posted by: Greg | April 26, 2008 7:56 PM | Report abuse

I don't really mind that pick. Maybe they will be using him as a more traditional TE and have Cooley running more patters, in motion and what not to get good matchup against LB's and safeties. Davis was a good player on a very good team.

Posted by: cdubb | April 26, 2008 7:56 PM | Report abuse

I am amped up because are offense is going to look awesome in the west coast

Posted by: tommy | April 26, 2008 7:57 PM | Report abuse

Not likely they are making Cooley mad....I actually like the pick.

We're moving to a west coast offense, two tight ends who can block and catch will be a great thing to have.

Posted by: B | April 26, 2008 7:57 PM | Report abuse

I don't get this pick either. Seems like a great player, but a TE, really? Are we going to be playing 90% 2 TE sets now on offense?

Posted by: Gfunk | April 26, 2008 7:57 PM | Report abuse

WTF are the skins thinking with fred davis. where the hell is he going to play?

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 7:57 PM | Report abuse

Does Zorn's WC offense require 2 TE's

Posted by: BT | April 26, 2008 7:57 PM | Report abuse

Fred Davis was rated by some as a 1st round pick. He is a good receiver and can learn to block better under Buges. He is a really solid athlete.

Consider him the replacement for Yoda.

Posted by: jcook | April 26, 2008 7:57 PM | Report abuse

Campbell to cards another DE stolen from us.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 7:58 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: redryan400 | April 26, 2008 7:58 PM | Report abuse

Arizona just picked Calais Campbell

Posted by: Mo (Cleveland) | April 26, 2008 7:58 PM | Report abuse

remember our power sets? what about davis and cooley and your boy mix all on the field at the same time, plus cooley and portis in the flats.

we might actually be able to score a touchdown in the red zone

Posted by: supuradam | April 26, 2008 7:58 PM | Report abuse

Watch us take a RB with the 51st

Posted by: Tim | April 26, 2008 7:58 PM | Report abuse

i think Davis was a great pick...he would not be there later and Yes WE NEEDED ANOTHER te THAT CAN CATCH TO GO ALONG WITH COOLLEY...HAVING TWO TES LIKE THAT IS DEADLY!!@!@!!! tHE OTHER ISSUES ON THE LINES WILL BE ANSWERED IN THE REST OF THE DRAFT AND THERE IS JUNE 1ST PEOPLE...Sorry bout caps...

Posted by: Leevi98 | April 26, 2008 7:58 PM | Report abuse

Maybe they plan on using alot of 2 TE sets? I'm not too familiar with this west coast offense stuff other than the playbook on Madden (which is garbage by the way) If thats the case Cooley and Davis could cause ALOT of matchup problems.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 7:58 PM | Report abuse

Well that scouts inc thing shoots down my theory. We are gonna be passing the ball all over the place. OL better stay healthy.

I'd like to see them take Brohm. Campbell's good and all, but hardly proven. Brohm would be an excellent value this low and would be a perfect fit for the West Coast offense.

Skins needed a Big Possession Receiver.

Fred Davis is exactly that.

He WAS USC's offense this year and set all-time records there.....at USC.

Posted by: Reality Check, Meathead! | April 26, 2008 8:01 PM | Report abuse

Zorn better have some weird plays drawn up, because if Fred Davis and Cooley aren't on the field at the same time out in routes, this was a DUMB pick. Putting both of them out in routes also is going to put a ton of pressure on the OL, which isn't getting any younger.

I don't care what Mel Kiper says. He's grading the Skins draft based upon his player evaluations and "value" not team needs. This was a HORRIBLE draft pick in light of what the Skins need.

Posted by: Mike C. | April 26, 2008 8:03 PM | Report abuse

Well, if this offense doesn't score points next year, I don't think they'll be able to do anything.

The logic here appears to be simple: our offense was weak and was our Achilles' Heel. Our defense was solid and we expect them to perform as well as they did last year.

Assuming the offensive line can stay healthy, this offense may be pretty strong next year.

Posted by: P Diddy | April 26, 2008 8:03 PM | Report abuse

The Skins MUST get DL and OL tomorrow now.

The O Lineman and Defensive players they wanted were off the board, so they went with the best available, and now they are stacked at WR and TE for years to come. Increased odds that one of these guys becomes a star.

Posted by: kost52 | April 26, 2008 8:05 PM | Report abuse

Must be protecting ourselves against a bust at WR. They better not all be busts or we are f'd.

More I read this is a GREAT PICK!

Fred Davis is a Stud! Do some research people. He's a beast.

Dig'em!!!

Remember, the skins did pretty well with young linemen last year after the draft was over

Posted by: Undrafted FA | April 26, 2008 8:06 PM | Report abuse

ESPN is loving the skins draft. The only thing I can think is that Arizona picking Campbell took the DL out for the skins. I see another trade to pick up another 4th or to get back the 3rd they gave up.

Posted by: marlonjohn | April 26, 2008 8:06 PM | Report abuse

Skins will run that new fangled offense -- six wrs, two tes, two rbs, a qb and no freakin' linemen!

I'm with you. Get Ted on the phone.

This draft went from great (thomas) to solid (davis) to WTF!?!?!?!? (Kelly). They talked D/O line for the weeks leading to the draft. So now, they take 3 offensive players? Is it Vinny, Zorn, or Napoleon? I live in philly and I know my coworkers are going to give me S*!t on monday, as well they should.

I can't believe this!!!! What is going on, I feel like i'm in the bad dream I had last night where this really happened! What is Vinney doing???

Posted by: redryan400 | April 26, 2008 8:06 PM | Report abuse

Someone convince me, I am wrong to be losing my patience that in these last two picks we did not take the best OL and DL available?

Posted by: RedskinRay1 | April 26, 2008 8:06 PM | Report abuse

This isn't so bad after it settled in for me. We should go after that C/G from Arizona State, an OG, and an OT in the coming rounds, and try to fill in whatever else we can on D. I think you're right, P Diddy-- if we have a healthy O-Line this could be fire.

Posted by: TDawg | April 26, 2008 8:06 PM | Report abuse

Maybe we're gonna trade for Jason Taylor as our DE.... Snyder is always looking for a down-sliding veteran to mortgage our future for.

Posted by: Mike C. | April 26, 2008 8:06 PM | Report abuse

What is going on.

I had hope.

I was the biggest vinny basher in the world.

I was right all along.

Boycott.

Posted by: kyle | April 26, 2008 8:07 PM | Report abuse

The only good thing here is they appear to be drafting the best available athlete (both WRs were potential 1st rounders on some boards)

Posted by: Mattsoundworld | April 26, 2008 8:07 PM | Report abuse

Two WRs are a stretch, but OK. I can kinda sorta maybe see it. But two WRs AND a pass catching TE?

Are we forgetting something? Like...uh...maybe the DEFENSE?

Scouts, Inc.'s Gary Horton: They're obviously trying to load up on offensive weapons and use many formations. It has been the goal of the organization to put multiple receivers on the field, which opens up the run game. Now you have the current group of WRs, you have an athletic TE in Fred Davis. They should help in the passing game down field. You now open things up for Clinton Portis and you have the luxury of moving Chris Cooley all over the field as a Dallas Clark kind of guy. This potentially looks like an offense that's going to be very tough to matchup against. Their depth on the perimeter will take most defenses farther than they can go.

In the west coast offense you need big receivers. Jim Zorn must be smiling. They better win 10 games or more because we got weapons. Day 2 we need defense and o-line

Posted by: tommy | April 26, 2008 8:07 PM | Report abuse

I got it... We will line up Cooley and Davis at TE... Moss, Randle El, Kelly, and Davis at WR... With Campbell and Portis at QB and RB... Thatll leave space for three o-linemen... Depth issue solved Way to go guys!!!!!!!!!!!!

Isn't that funny? The team that has the guy we should've hired as our head coach was smart enough to draft Groves. I'm beginning to hate being a Redskin fan.

Posted by: DC Fan | April 26, 2008 8:08 PM | Report abuse

OMG, Millen snuck into the skins war room.

Posted by: Crozz | April 26, 2008 8:08 PM | Report abuse

Don't like the Kelly pick. I guess they were just taking what they thought was the Best available with Campbell of the board.....Gotta go D Line tommorow. OL I'm really not so concerned about...our guys are solid. Yes they are getting older, but I think all of them have a least 2 more years in the tank so we have time.

Posted by: B | April 26, 2008 8:09 PM | Report abuse

Wow...I'm suprised by this...This is very telling. It's actually not a bad pick. Maybe we're looking at a Boldin/Fitzgerald type combo.

Maybe Zorn may not think as much of Moss and ARE.

Ok...now we've got 6 picks left to sure up the O and D Line.

Posted by: sicwidit | April 26, 2008 8:09 PM | Report abuse

Okay I stop paying attention for a few hours and this is what happens.

Posted by: Alex35332 | April 26, 2008 8:09 PM | Report abuse

Ever here of two TE set?

By the way look at who Seattle picked up in the 2nd round. (a TE)

Two WRs picked.

I think this means we will be making a trade of Jason Taylor and Moss could be on the outs.

Some crazy stuff going on here.

Posted by: REDSKINS ONE | April 26, 2008 8:09 PM | Report abuse

I think they're protecting themselves against the desperation caused by all of the injuries to our midget receivers last season. There won't be any signing rejects mid-season next year.

I hope Thrash and Yoder packed their name plates at the end of last season because they're done here.

From ESPN Chat-

So which receiver just became expendable?

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 8:10 PM | Report abuse

I'm gonna go be a Jaguars fan...I'm following Gregg Williams..lol

Everyone sees that defense and rushing the passer wins games. So what do we do with the opportunity to really bolster the defense with all these picks?

GET MORE WIDE RECEIVERS. Matt Millen would be proud. We are the new Detroit Lions.

Posted by: DC Fan | April 26, 2008 8:10 PM | Report abuse

The more I think about it, the more I like how things have unfolded. We'll have 5 quality WRs, 2 of which are over 6'4". Santana Moss and ARE haven't been healthy for 16 weeks for us and I see this draft as an investment in the future (which is what the draft is supposed to be). If we can solidify the O-Line; the Scouts Inc. analysis will be dead on. Our D-Line can hold out for another year; its the secondary/ linebacking corps that need major depth.

Posted by: TDawg | April 26, 2008 8:11 PM | Report abuse

Between Moss, Thomas, Kelly, Randle El, Cooley, and Davis, the opponents' secondary will be pissing their pants.

Posted by: SCSkins | April 26, 2008 8:11 PM | Report abuse

I'd like to congratulate the Redskins for their already successful draft. I see that Vinny has taken my advice.

They told Zorn: What do you want? and Blatche to shut up.

Posted by: Crozz | April 26, 2008 8:12 PM | Report abuse

Maybe Fred Davis will run patterns out of the Fullback slot on 3rd down.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 8:15 PM | Report abuse

I'm surprised, and don't trust Cerato farther than I can throw him, but as far as OL goes, we need to remember that Buges can coach up just about anyone (see Stephon Heyer). Bet we pick up two guys tomorrow who work just fine.

As for the defense... I'm thinking that Jim Zorn is a "the best defense is a good offense" kind of guy.

Posted by: Pete in Atlanta | April 26, 2008 8:16 PM | Report abuse

Skins are doing the opposite routine since it's obvious we need defense but nothing they do ever works they just went the opposite route.

Posted by: CT | April 26, 2008 8:18 PM | Report abuse

Santana Moss to Philly for Lito Sheppard

Santana Moss to Miama for Jason Taylor

Anyone see either of these as possibilities?

Posted by: TDawg | April 26, 2008 8:19 PM | Report abuse

I used to be a fevent fan but I am so glad I don't give Danny any of my money. the fish smells from the head.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 26, 2008 8:21 PM | Report abuse

I like these picks because are defense was solid last year but are Receivers did not get open the last few games. Campbell willhave big targets and if Moss is healthy we will take some shots. I like what the Skins did because all these guys were 1st round talent. At the end of the day they drafted the best player on the board.

Posted by: Tommy | April 26, 2008 8:29 PM | Report abuse

Like everyone here my original thought was WTF! But the more I think about it and since we do have six more picks that can be used on offense and defense that we need I'll withhold judgment until tomorrow night... Considering how many receivers we went through last year it's not such a bad draft so far... the tight end is probably an upgrade over Yoder... and lining up with both Cooley and Davis could be very cool! Along with combinations of big and little wideouts. Hopefully with some good picks tomorrow and a lot of luck injury wise next year could be interesting...

Posted by: ImjustaBill | April 26, 2008 8:36 PM | Report abuse

I know what the master plan of Dano and his ace step-and-fetch-a-lot boy is.

They are going to put all of the receivers they picked today (three with three picks)and whatever receivers they can select tomorrow with their remaining picks into a large buffet room. And not let them out 'til Jul

The ones that can eat enough to bulk up to lineman's weight, they will plug into their decimated and aged O- and D lines.

Great plan lil' Dano!!!! Now, go get another cigar (one as big as you) to celebrate.

Perhaps they can get Tom Cruise to play receiver too?

Posted by: claude | April 26, 2008 9:05 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, I said WTF, too - but some thoughts:

First of all - no one but the hamsters here were saying O-line and D-Line were the key needs in the first three rounds. Does anyone remember how the D-Line played against Minnesota and Dallas at the EOY? There was some growth there.

Two - O-Line - Yes, we need young depth, but our problem this year was not talent, but injuries. We can get that in later rounds.

Three - the passing game, as a whole - other than a few moments, is there anyone out there who saw a great deal of consistency in our passing game, other that what the Todd made happen? For the past two or three years, has anyone said, "Yeah, we're in the two minute drill, we're going to score now with our great passing game?"

Four - We got three GREAT receviers in the draft - We can still fill O-Line, D-Line and LB needs later in the draft.

Fifth - Do you really, really think that Blache would sit there and let them draft three receivers if he really wanted someone on the board? Not from what I've heard about the man. Same thing with Bugel - Neither one of them have any reason to sit there and be quiet while Vinny, Dan or Jim Zorn make picks that they don't agree with.

Calm down, everyone, calm down.

As usual, the Skins go for the overkill. IF we need 1 receiver, they go for 3. I won't be surprised if they picked Manningham with the 3rd rounder. I think other teams in the division are laughing out loud at Snyder-men picking 2 receivers in the same round.

Until we have the dumbass Snyder running these things..nothing will change. I haven't seen any team draft the same position in the same round...TWICE!! and that also a WR. YOu can never have enough CB, OL or DL's but WR???????? WTF
