Where are you watching The Game?

By Washington Post editors

At home? Not a bad option. But if you want multiple big screens and a couple hundred of your closest friends, here are some bars hosting Super Bowl viewing events.

Today is Saint Groundhog Day, the most American of holidays! It was named after than classic movie with Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell (which you can download on Netflix). This is the day when if you don't wear green and someone pinches you there will be six more weeks of Global Warming.

"Where are you watching The Game?"

At home. Some of us have to get up for work at 3 am the next day...

Beep, if by "Groundhog Day, the most American of holidays" you mean "a stain on the American culture like reality TV and Sarah Palin" then I'll co-sign that...

I'm watching it at the Monastery of course, with Pokey and the rest of the Monks. PlayAction's supposed to come over too with all of the sock puppets, but I had to pull a lot of strings for you to be 'allowed' back. There's just 2 rules: No asking people for blumpkins and no upperdeckers in our toilet! PA is crazy when he mixes booze and weed!

It's mid-winter, the occasion to observe Ground Hog Day. Let's hear it for all the 'Whistle Pigs' out there.

Asc far as football is concerned, let's hope there is football after the lock-out.

Where are you watching The Game?

I will be watching The Big Game for storylines and trends:

--will BJ Raji have a field day against the Steelers' back up center now that M Pouncey is not playing?

--will the pressure from Raji force Ben to run more or have a serious effect on the Steeler's passing game?

--how will the Steelers deal with C Matthews?

--how many times will C Matthews/J Harrison flex after a monstah sack?

--quick: which defense is the best? The team with the best defense should win, the packers say.

--there are two stud corners, two stud safeties, 6 stud linebackers, and two stud nose tackles in this game: will a defender be MVP?
(To that question, AR says, "No!"

--if Troy Polamalu plays close to the line of scrimmage in an effort to shut down the Packer's running attack, will Jordy Nelson make plays behind him and in front of R Clark?

--if the Packers corners shut down Wallace/Sanders, will Heath Miller be open in centerfield?

--which quarterback is a better scrambler: Ben or AR?

--true/false: you can count all the big money FAs playing in this game on one finger on one hand: C Woodson.

--quick, name all the ex-Redskins giggling at memories of Zorn-Gibbs-Vinny in this game.

--Driver, Jennings, Quarles, Jones, and Lee are better than ARE, Wallace, Sanders, Miller, true/false?

--Ben is better than AR, true/false?

--the Packers' fullback: name him, quick!
(Hint: like Moe, he went to Shippensburg U of Pa.)

--special teams trickeration always makes sense, so which team attempts a fake punt at mid field in the 3rd quarter in an effort to keep the ball away from the other offense?

We expect a game very much like the contest a few years ago between the Cards/Steelers: close, but last minute heroics wins the trophy.

So the Steelers go in with a late lead...

..but AR steps up and the Packers pull out a late win a la Ben v. Kurt Warner.

And when we're done, I treat us to hot wings!

We offer sincere apologies to any ACC school of journalism grads who may have been slighted by the irony and sarcasm embedded in a post I submitted earlier this morning.

I respect newspapers so much I use the local morning edition to line mrsmoe's pet birdcage, before reading it later in the day.

Yes, the love of information runs that deep in my house.

I want you to know that I have nothing but the greatest respect for the hard-working journalists who keep up informed, up-to-date, entertained, and aware.

Thing is, none of them work for the sports section of the WaPo.

And if they do, I only have one request: put them hot wings down.

But my girlfriend claims to be a diehard Steelers fan.

Oh, and she still thinks Jerome Bettis is on the team.

DC2AZ99, thanks for your thoughts last night. While they won't all work out, they are a lot more interesting than where each of us will watch SB.

I'm ok with trading AH, whether it's for a pick or a player like Sidney Rice.

I'm still of the opinion that keeping DMac and resigning Rexy is an option. We have a lot of needs, besides qb. I was actually surprised at how Sexy performed, and that combination would buy us a year of rebuilding. We have so many needs...it just depends on who MS sees in the draft that he really likes, and if we can draft that player at a reasonable draft pick. If not, then this is certainly an option.

I'm ok with keeping rb the same, IF CP will renegotiate his contract, even if it is laden with performance bonuses.

I'd like to resign JBrown for RT. I don't think we should sign any RFA's. We need our draft picks too much. I'm ok with signing a UFA to either C or OG, preferably OG, and moving Licht.. to C.

Marcus Spears...see comments on RFA's. I'd like to sign either a UFA DE or LB.

I agree we keep Carriker. I would resign Vonnie H. He was still playing a strong level at end of season. I like KG and JJ.

I agree we amy need to go another season with Maake and AB at NT, if MK has improved healthwise. I would draft Taylor in 2nd but not with #10. And I don't think Von Miller will be available at #10. We need to take the best athlete available who is either LB or DL, unless that "special" qb is available.

I know you were quoting sources who said Rocky was still a RFA. I would like that clarified. I think he and Los are UFAs. And even if he is RFA, I don't think we will get a 3rd pick for him. I am all for resigning Los, as long as he doesn't ask for the moon.

Anyway, thanks for your thoughts. I found them very interesting.

Posted by: frediefritz | February 2, 2011 10:24 AM | Report abuse

especially since he's a FA.

Posted by: scampbell1975 | February 2, 2011 12:58 AM

He's an RFA...we do what other teams do...sign and deal. Plenty of precedent in the league. MacIntosh has an injury-free history and did fairly well in the 4-3 D. There are 17 teams in the league that still go with the 4-3 and would see Mac as the young, experienced, and healthy player he is. Plus, with a U of Miami pedigree, he'll get attention.

Posted by: DC2AZ99 | February 2, 2011 1:33 AM

Rocky Mac is NOT a RFA. You're getting bad info. What you are doing is using a sight that is suggesting that the CBA will extend the free agency status a year. As of right he is an UFA. Try looking at a couple of sites next time instead of just one. As far as a third for Rocky Mac even if he WAS a RFA, well, that's just not going happen. Maybe a 4th.

I think Vick should have been offensive player of the year, and Brady was clearly the MVP. Honestly, who was more exciting to watch this season? They can hate Vick all you want, but he deserves that award. Also consider that with the fact that the Eagles were statistically one of the most TV friendly teams in the NFL this year, with I believe 3 or more games being among the top rated regular season games. I can assure you that nobody was watching the Eagles for their defense.
I’m not denying that Brady was brilliant this season, but Brady’s performance was that of an MVP, not the offensive player of the year. He got it done this season and didn’t turn the ball over, but in terms of an electrifying offensive playmaker, I think Vick has the edge there.

Where can I go to read that statement? My recollection is that MS said DMac MAY have to accept a backup role. That's why MS was giving Sexy a 3-game tryout. I'm pretty sure MS will opt to play the best qb on roster.

Hey, joke all you want, we need him until we can find an upgrade. You'll be begging to have old Stone Hands back when it's just Westbrook and Barnes back there taking on the #2 and 3 receivers every game and then D Hall starts b*tchin, NOBODY wants that.

But seriously, once the league watches the tape, he won't experience the same level of success.

Where can I go to read that statement? My recollection is that MS said DMac MAY have to accept a backup role. That's why MS was giving Sexy a 3-game tryout. I'm pretty sure MS will opt to play the best qb on roster.

This came from a previous Redskins Insider

Shanahan said he definitely would welcome back McNabb if McNabb were willing to return to the Redskins as a backup "but I'm not sure he would, which I would understand. But I think that's why we're talking about hypothetical situations. I don't think that would happen. But if he was interested in that, obviously, that'd be a possibility."

Doesn't sound like to situation you're describing.

MVP is based on value as in w/o the dude the team would have sucked. OPY is based on stats like TDs, yardage, red zone and third down conversion, etc.

Posted by: CottonEyeJoe | February 2, 2011 11:28 AM | Report abuse

We will lose either Rogers or McIntosh, both are in the same boat, UFA's and wanting more money. We need Rogers more than McIntosh, but I think Rogers leaves for more money and we keep McIntosh, even though I'd like to see Perry Riley step up and take over for Rocky.

I said it yesterday and I'll say it again. I think rocky is gone but only the Skins will gauge Rogers value correctly. Other teams will be influenced by his lack of hands so he will get his best offer here.

Actually, the ball can touch the ground if it is clearly controlled by the player, with no movement within the grasp of the player.

What do the Redskins do about the center position? --IH8dallas

that's a great question and as much as i talk about replacing rabach, i havent had too many solutions, but then again that's not my job to find a replacement for him, but more to suggest a replacement

i say draft a DT/DE at #10
then a C in round 2

that's where i'd go

or draft a DT/DE at #10, find a C in free agency and draft a QB in round 2

either way getting a DE/DT/C is prolly the most important positions that we need replaced NOW that and QB

actually, the same could be said of any of the following: Fairley, Bowers, Peterson, Miller and probably Dareus. If any of them would be available at #10, it would be like Rak falling to us again.

don't necessarily agree with this retroskins14...montgomery or KL78 are natural centers and one of the two should be put at C while rabach gets released

with the 10 pick we have to get OLB (hopefully miller) and with the second rd pick (hopefully taylor from baylor)

this would very quickly help shore up the D...just look at the packers in the super bowl now with raji and matthews taken in the same draft

Funny.

* When Vick went to jail they said he'd never play in the NFL again. He did.

* When Vick got out of jail they said he wouldn't be a quarterback and he wouldn't have the same speed prior to his incarseration. He did.

* When he signed with the Eagles, they thought Vick would only be a simple gadget wildcat QB -- not only he wasn't some gadget showpiece -- he came back better than ever by doing the things people said he'd never do -- by becoming an all-around QB.

Yeah, keep betting against Mike Vick. Not saying he's a great QB, but he's damn close.

Unless someone offers up multiple 1st rounders, I wouldn't take a trade if Peterson is there...dude is being hailed the next Champ Bailey. If that's even close to true, I'm using the pick and hoping there's a solid NT/OLB type on the board in Round 2...

I just REALLY hope we don't sh*t the sheets and take a QB...that would be a HUGE mistake...

Alan4...Once again playing fast and loose with reality/facts huh?

When Shanahan made that statement it was clear to anyone with an IQ above 70 that he was not ready to commit to bringing back #5 or any QB as the locked in starter.

That's what he said. He WAS however ready to guarantee that he would bring back #5 as a backup...ie he would welcome him on the roster to compete for starting job/be a backup, but not as the guaranteed starter.

You are trying to make it sound like Shanahan is on record as saying Mcnabb will only be back as a reserve, when in fact at that point in time all the coach ever said was he had to evaluate the position after the season.

Dude, there is certainly enough disfunction with this team and the QB situation that you should not have to MAKE THINGS UP at this point. The truth provides almost as much fodder for eternal skeptics like you to run with...So go for it, but stop spinning things like that, it's weak.

true, id love to have a better option at center than what's on the team right now (like pouncey coming out from florida) but i think we agree that motgomery and KL78 are better options than rabach at this point, so might as well use what you've got and draft for much more pressing needs on D

Red, to be fair, Vick beat A LOT of long odds to do what he's done to date. He was a mediocre QB BEFORE he went to jail, it wasn't a bad bet to think he'd be even worse with 2 years out of the game and losing a step or two of his only real asset at the time: his speed. I give the guy props for rehabbing his image and finally taking his gig seriously, but to imply that it was in any way predictable is using 20/20 hindsight, my friend...

I like the idea of giving Montgomery a shot at center. Definately an upgrade from Rabach and saves a draft pick. We can always upgrade again in 2012 after we address other needs this year.

The dreamers are out in full force I see. 2 washed up QB's, fat boy at NT, a C that sacks his own QB, dream on fools. The biggest joke is the belief that this FO will turn this roster into a winner. Fools, Allen's track record indicates he is clueless. Draft picks for a washed-up QB and a T that will be finished due to a hip injury. And some dreamers were posting that the deals were a steal. The only steal was the Eagles and the Saints stealing our draft picks. Dream on fools !

Danny Boy is going after a newspaper that is distributed to the public for free. That will teach everyone a lesson. It is a lesson in power over people, fools. Remember, no signs allowed at FedEx ? Danny Boy's ego is matched only by Jerry Jones and his ego. Also of note, this fool David Donovan is still up to his old tricks I see.
