Why Redskins fans should root for Cowboys

There has been much talk in NFL circles about the potential impact of an "uncapped year" - a season in which there would be no salary cap, exactly what's on tap for 2010 unless the league and the players union unexpectedly come to an agreement by early March. Could one major ramification be that the Redskins should pull for Dallas this weekend?

A profootballtalk.com post this morning puts a particular focus on the Redskins and Cowboys. It serves as a good reminder of a few things: an uncapped year would also mean there is no salary "floor," meaning some teams could get cheap; there would still be ramifications for teams that go deep into the playoffs; and Jerry Jones and Daniel Snyder would remain two of the most financially competitive owners in the sport.

Start with the first point: The idea that an uncapped year would simply mean a spending spree for all 32 teams, and that free agents would gorge at the buffet, is likely misplaced. In a Q&A on an uncapped year released in 2008, the NFL said, "We expect player benefits to decline in an uncapped year." That includes such things as payments to player 401(k) plans, etc., but it almost certainly means the overall player salary pool would go down, too.

Even within the seeming chaos of a season with no salary cap or floor - see Major League Baseball, pre-luxury tax -- the NFL will have restrictions aimed at assuring competitive balance. From the NFL's Q&A:

"During the uncapped year, the eight clubs that make the divisional playoffs in the previous season have additional restrictions that limit their ability to sign Unrestricted Free Agents from other clubs. In general, the four clubs participating in the Championship Games are limited in the number of free agents that they may sign; the limit is determined by the number of their own free agents signing with other clubs. For the four clubs that lose in the Divisional playoffs, in addition to having the ability to sign free agents based on the number of their own free agents signing with other clubs, they may also sign players based on specific financial parameters."

The Cowboys, by virtue of their victory over Philadelphia in last weekend's wild-card round, are now in the final eight. They are already limited in what free agents they can sign in the upcoming offseason, largely having to match anyone they want to sign with a contract of their own they lost to free agency.

But as the profootballtalk.com post explains, Redskins fans might want to - gulp - actually root for the Cowboys to beat Minnesota on Sunday and advance to the NFC Championship game. The four teams involved in the conference championship games will have further restrictions on their offseason pursuit of free agents - teams that are not in the final four will be able to pursue an unlimited number of free agents at a relatively low first-year salary ($3.275 million, with limits on growth in subsequent years), while those that advance to the NFL's final four won't be able to pursue such players. Thus, the best teams - even in an uncapped year - won't be able to fill in their rosters with solid veterans that might choose them simply because of the chance to win instantly.

None of this addresses the quality of the potential free agents out there, how the free-agent pool will be limited because more players will be restricted, etc. But it does remind fans that the Redskins - under new general manager Bruce Allen and new coach Mike Shanahan - will have no spending limits and one rival will be significantly hindered.

interesting post.. And props to WAPO for citing PFT.
If Vinny was still picking.. I probably wouldnt care about FA issues.. Just more opportunity for more mistakes...
However, with competent personnel people now working at Redskins Park... This is relevant.

A Redskin fan rooting for the Cowboys? Man, do you understand anything about being a Redskins fan? That'd be like drinking acid or slamming a door on your hand. Unheard of. Here's to the Cowboys getting beaten like they stole something. And not that I would wish physical harm to anyone, but if you could throw in a little Theisman-like action on Romo it would just make my day...

I am pro-anything that makes the Skins better. I would like to be in a place where WE actually give the Cowpukes their well deserved beatdowns, not lose by shutouts and 7-6.

That said, Go Vikings!

Are you kidding me? If the Redskinis' own rebuilding and success depends on the success of a hated division rival, then there is something that is severely flawed with the Redskins' philosophy.

I will never...ever...EVER root for those dirt-bag, scum Cowgirls. It is possible to build a successful team even with this salary un-capped business.

"That includes such things as payments to player 401(k) plans, etc., but it almost certainly means the overall player salary pool would go down, too."

I don't now how it's news that some owners would choose to sit on their profits if there was no cap or contract too compel them to spend money.

After all, making money and not spending it is why so many of them are wealthy in the first place.

If anything, the players should remember that fans root for the uniform, not them.

And in that case, I'd try to keep the present structure in place to insure I get whatever piece of the pie I could get.

Because like in baseball, guys who make a profit don't always spend money on talent to win.

PaaaLeeze...Ok, Dallas is playing some good football right now. Dallas can run the ball, use playaction and their defense has a front 7 that can apply heat on any offense. I actually think Dallas has a good shot of making it to the superbowl, but there is no way i'm going to wish dallas luck during the rest of playoffs for ANY reason. In fact, i was happy Philly lost AGAIN and we can still give iggle fan a hard time about never winning a superbowl.

As Doc always says, I hope Dallas can find a way to throw up all over themselves...

That's completely different. 1) the competition for free agents is between us and 31 other teams regardless of whether the Cowgirls win or not. 2) as our own team as amply demonstrated the quality of your season is unrelated to the number of free agents you sign.

What I want to know about an uncapped year... is there any restriction to extremely front loaded contracts? Let's say you sign a guy like Albert Haynesworth to the same contract, but you make 70% of the hit in the first year?

Or can you redo existing contracts without penalties?

I ask, because even though next year is capless, future years may not be.

The structure of whatever contracts are signed will be interesting.

With the almost-as-evil Patriots happily eliminated by way of that humiliating defeat on their own field, I'm focusing all my "lose now" vibes on the Cowboys.

There's no other team remaining in the postseason tournament that I dislike anywhere near as much as I dislike Dallas. You could add up all the dislike I have for the other seven remaining teams combined and multiply it by, like, twelve, and you'd still be a long way from how much I dislike Dallas. What I mean to say here is that I really, really, do not care for this team.

F rooting for a team that has not participated in the second round of the playoffs in five years and has not advanced past the second round of the playoffs in eighteen friggin' years.

I empathize with the kneejerk reaction, but if you're a redskin fan FIRST, then it makes sense, practically. Realistically it's impossible to root for Dallas.

This year is OVER for us. Next year would be better if Dallas was limited in FA. So if a winning team is what you REALLY want for our future, then it makes sense to root for Dallas now.

All that said, I could never root for Dallas. It compares to rooting for our team to lose for a better draft pick. Sure, maybe in the long run its better, but I just can't bring myself to root against my own team in any circumstance, and I can't bring myself to root for Dallas either.

Agree with posters who say No redskin fan roots for the Cowboys EVER, with the single exception of a Cowboy win getting the Redskins into the playoffs, where they'd get to beat the Cowboys themselves.

A more logical premise is not to root for the Cowboys, but to root against an uncapped year and take your chances.

First off, Barry and Jason using PFT as a source in any way shape or form is the sports equivalent the same as if Woodward and Bernstein had used The National Enquirer as a source to cover Watergate.

Actually, that isn't fair to the Enquirer. They get it right far more often than Florio @ PFT.

Second, THE BEAUTIFUL PART OF THE UNCAPPED YEAR IS NOT WHO YOU CAN SIGN IT IS WHO YOU CAN CUT.

This gives teams (like the Skins) the ability to get rid of the under performing, the over paid and the trouble makers without putting themselves in salary cap jail.

An uncapped year creates the opportunity for all teams (including the Cowboys) to get a fresh start -- something the Skins badly need.

The ONLY case where I would root for the Cowboys is where a Dalas win leads to better playoff ramifications for the Skins (i.e. - we are tied with the Giants in week 15 for the division lead and Dallas is playing the Giants that weekend).
given the current state of the Skins, not likely I will be having to root for them anytime in the next few years.

Otherwise - nope, can't do it. I truly hope Dallas is humiliated this week.

Either way, the Skins' front office has to outsmart the other teams in the league consistently to turn this joke around into a winner. One offseason is just a drop in the bucket to offset the Cerrato decade of accumulated mistakes.

Go after Marvin Harrison, TO, Richard Seymour, Brett Favre, Tom Brady after next year. Heck bring back Deion, who would come back for $ even as he played here like he'd play here next year.

Bin Laden or the Cowboys?

Who would we root for?

Posted by: bflorhodes | January 12, 2010 12:25 PM | Report abuse

I have always been amused by the folks that wonder which teams they should root for, because, it don't make a gnatzass of a difference to the outcome of the game. Never the less, people will ponder the question as if it could have an effect on the game. I would like to see New Orleans win it but that isn't going to help them.

Seriously I would erase this right now. Do you understand this fan base at all? Have you not seen the pricks that live in this area and like the Cowboys just to be A holes? The Skins can beat the Cowgirls in the future no matter who they sign. Let them sign whoever they want. I hope they lose 78-0 this weekend. It's not like signing free agents ever works for a team anyway! If anything this will force them to grow with younger players. THAT'S BAD!!!!!!

WOW and LOL...I see folk already beat me to it, you LUNCHIN hard, if think a true skins fan would ever root for Dallas, ever o_O LOL Salary cap restrictions or not, come on dude!!!!

Posted by: furg81 | January 12, 2010 12:53 PM | Report abuse

Jason, your logic makes no sense at all. Especially considering the team's strategy the past few years. 2 of the biggest prima donna's on the team are Haynesworth & Portis because they are overpaid. The skins need to stop overspending on guys and build through the draft & develop their own players. Stop trying to go for the quick fix as it hasn't worked out. The uncapped year will make it easier to cut the dead weight/overpaid players. But there is no one really out there worth spending on.

JR, you have not been here long enuf. I'll forgive you as long as YOU NEVER MAKE THIS MISTAKE AGAIN.

'Skin fans HATE THE COWBOYS with a passion. It started with at least George Allen. He stoked the hatred. Ever since, we have been rabid Cowboy haters.

Posted by: PriorKnowledge | January 12, 2010 1:12 PM | Report abuse

Sigh. Let's face it, the Redskins have zero chance of winning the division next year. You should concentrate on tearing down potential wild card rivals. You can't buy a championship in the NFL, Snyder has proved that. It takes patience and the draft.

Posted by: Nemo24601 | January 12, 2010 1:14 PM | Report abuse

Any Redskin's fan rooting for the Cowboys should have their fan card revoked.

Personally, I can't even admire the sky on a clear night in case I see a star.

Ah, back to reality.
Since 1960, its Dallas 60, Redskins 39 with 2 ties. Head to head

It's Dallas with FIVE Lombardi trophies, Skins 3 (2 in strike seasons that played like 6 games).

It's Dallas, another NFC East title (23 and counting), Redskins ONLY FIVE in 50 years of the NFC East.

To all you cowgirls fans on here concerning Suisham kicking. Wait until he is under pressure and it really matters, the kick will be bad. He does good not under pressure but when it really counts, he is crap!!! The comment concerning our STADIUM is hysterical. At least us Redskins play outside and our stadium has color in it and it doesn't look like a space ship that cannot fly. BTW cowgirl fans, you are now in Arlington, Texas not Dallas anymore. You need to change your name to the Arlington Cowgirls, that is more fitting. You are now in playoffs, it only took you 13 years, well us Redskins have been in three playoffs in the last ten years. Our record is better with that. HAIL YEAH!!!!!!

So let me get this straight: you are saying that for us Redskins fans, the positive happiness gained from (an increased probability of) getting a (potentially) good free agent who will (maybe) help us win more games next year somehow can balance out the overwhelming and immediate negative feelings of seeing the Cowboys in the NFC championship game with the chance to go to the Superbowl?? I'd rather have them lose and take our chances next year!

Once again there's no insight as to what happened in '93, the only uncapped season since the current system was agreed to earlier that year. NFL SALARIES ROSE AT THE GREATEST RATE BETWEEN '92 & '93 THAN EVER BEFORE OR SINCE. Yes, there was no floor then either but the threat of "salaries falling" is just another propaganda lever issued by owners who want the union to collapse and accept a horrible CBA just as both the NBA and NHL players forced their leadership to take both stupid and humiliating deals in the past. Why won't salaries drop off? Owners are insulated from economic adversity by the huge TV dollars they receive before the season starts. And, more importantly, GMs and coaches NEED to win to retain their jobs and they will pay whatever the market will bear to get the players they want--no matter the cost. Remember, in this multi-billion $ industry, there's no waiting around 2 - 3 seasons to produce; uh, Zorn and Mora. Writers rarely spend any time studying the system in detail or going back to review what's really happened; it's easier just to accept the nonsense coming out of Park Avenue as gospel--and who needs to talk to the union anyway 'cause they're just a bunch of dumb players. Do you think Reid read or understood Brees' piece in this paper just a few days ago? I sure don't.

I'm afraid that I would be struck down by every power in the universe if I rooted for the Cowboys. Continents would shift and the sun would go dark. Just to suggest this shows what dire straights the Skins are in that we have to go this low to have hope for next year. It really is sad how far we've fallen. This article is just an insulting shot at die hard Skins fans.

Me root for the "Plowboys"??? No way!!! Even if we sign Flozell and a couple more of their free agents in the offseason.

GO VIKINGS!!! I'm still stunned by what happened to the Packers in OT Sunday night...even though the Pack would probably have lost to the Saints, the 'Boys or the Vikings anyway. Really, the only way it's a huge disaster for the Packers is if Arizona makes it to the Super Bowl. I really doubt that will happen this year.

BTW, they failed to call a face-mask infraction on that play which won it for the Cards.

Maybe end of the cap could be good news for the Redskins. Maybe Dan Snyder will go bankrupt hiring over-the-hill "superstars" and lose the team. Maybe Ted Leonsis will buy it out of bankruptcy and have the same success he has had with the Capitals. Until then, the Redskins get to keep the NFC East Cellar compliments of Dan Snyder. Enjoy.
