Posted by: mattsoundworld | May 3, 2010 2:38 PM | Report abuse

I say they're better because the young guys are a season better and better QB play should elevate them further.

We are better. Have a couple WRs entering their 3rd year (you know what they say about 3rd year WRs) and then Moss will most likely play the slot and we have the old guy veterans that can still do somethings.

Mourn as long as you need to. But "one of the more popular players on the team"? With who? RIers? I never saw the guy play one down that meant something or make a play in any game that counted. So forgive me for not being busted up that he got cut. If he's really a player then he'll go somewhere else and prove management wrong. God bless him.

Posted by: learnedhand1

Mourn? Who the fu_k is mourning? How about more make you damn point and less stand up act?

And how about you go google comments teammates were making about his play in training/mini camp before you determine that he was just like by "RIers". Newsflash: The best player on the team isn't always the most well liked or popular.

Posted by: Stu27 | May 3, 2010 2:45 PM | Report abuse

Are you kidding us? 93 guys on the roster -- 9 or 10 at WR -- and you're worried that they're "limiting" competition?
He was given a shot. They have tape on the guy. He was in 10 games last year. Plus there's all that stunning pre-season fourth quarter tape. And he's been out at the park and participated in one mini-camp.
Look, they "gave him a shot" and decided that he missed their target. Let him have a shot with another team and let the Redskins work with the receivers they want.
Posted by: beep-beep | May 3, 2010 2:25 PM

I don’t care how many guys are on the roster; 9 or 10 guys competing is more limited than 10 or 11, yes. I just wish that they had kept him around for at least this one more mini camp, to see if he can out perform Galloway and some of the other fodder. If they didn’t like what they saw at that point and cut him, I wouldn’t be as disappointed. I just feel with all of the hype we read about him and what we saw in preseason (I realize that pre-season is preseason so don’t even say it), he should be able to stick around longer than a guy like Galloway or Wade. It’s like Red said, just really hoping that they had a diamond in an irrelevant draft pick…..believe me, I will get over it, I just wish he had a little more of a shot than they gave him. Ultimately I have no choice but to hope that Shanny was right to let him go, but I can still be disappointed about it. I thought he was going to be a good pick.

Posted by: NateinthePDX | May 3, 2010 2:45 PM | Report abuse

This was an awful move by the Redskins! We signed some receivers no one wanted and get rid of the one guy that didn't drop dozens of passes! Its very clear the burden will be on the running game to carry us because they won't realize they need good receivers until January when they are watch Philadelphia and Dallas make the playoffs!

So let me get this straight: It's not cool to voice concern of the release of one of the more popular players on the team -- one with potential -- but it's cool when people try take this bullsh*t "tough love" approach and tell people to "get over it"....

If anyone needs to "get over it" it's all the wannabe stoic fans that suggest that people get over it.

I'm not trying to be 'cool' about anything.

I do believe that M Mitchell is a talent.

I also do believe the NFL is a business.

I caught a replay of a couple of his college games via my Directv sports package last summer before camp, and listed him, A Dixon, C Daniels as players to watch.

But ultimately, redskins' fans have to 'man up' and realize that you can't have it both ways.

You can't want the roster upgraded by professional coaches, but want to also keep around every player you like.

Mitchell has cost the team no real money, wasn't drafted high, and with to other 'big' receivers on the roster, the team saw him as surplus, despite the 'potential'.

And if folks want to chew on that fat--go for it.

But there's always going to be the occasional fan fav who gets sent packing.

This week, Mitchell is that guy, and next week, some other guy might get sent out the door.

The team pulled Marko out, and I'm sure they'll plug in another guy.

Yes, that's a stoic attitude.

And it's also a realistic one.

Young man I couldn't care less what teammates said. Their job doesn't depend on his play. The coaches' jobs on the other hand did. So if MM was better than the team's less than highly productive group, I can't imagine they would not have played him if he was the better player. Look at the RB situation last season. Rock lost his job to Ganther. The coaches didn't care about how popular Rock was with his teammates or that he was a "real Redskin." They played the guy they believed would provide the greatest production. The new coach staff has watch film and practices and decided to go in another direction. I accept that under the circumstances and I am surprised others do not given our relative proximity to the players and the decisionmakers.

Posted by: pabrian2003 | May 3, 2010 2:45 PM

The answer is no. Randle El is better than Galloway/Wade. MK and DT may have improved, but they are still learning a new system. Terrence Austin was the third leading receiver on a very mediocre UCLA squad. He is not an upgrade over anybody that was on last years team. Just because Shanahan signed off on it doesnt mean its the right move. It also doesnt mean your hating if you question some of their recent moves which dont seem to make much sense. You like to think that they know what they are doing but considering both Shanahan's and Allen have limited experience in building a team its a bit concerning.

i'm still trusting shanallen, but this cut does make me nervous. it's one of the ones i'll be watching for a while to see how it pans out. hopefully, by mid-season things will be going so well i'll barely remember who marko mitchell is. like i said, still trusting, but plan to verify.

What is Galloway 60 years old now? Bobby Wade? give me a break! He couldn't make it on several teams. I really think Shanny is proving himself all over again like he did in Denver. He cut guys and they went on to great performances on other teams. He doesn't listen to his scouts and goes by tape. He brings in low character guys and turns his teams into a roster of felons. He did it in Denver and the Raiders. More of the same....

I'm just trying to figure out what's the problem in wanting to see long-shots that you see potential in making the team.

So what should I use to gauge a players talent or potential at the NFL level.... oh I see, I should just believe ANYTHING and WHATEVER Coach Shanahan says too, because he won a super bowl, and super bowl winning coaches aren't EVER wrong! Sh*t, they bat 1.000.

No, I should look at their Madden ratings.

Heard Colt B. on LaVar's show the other day (BTW Colt gives a really good interview). Any way Colt said the offense they are installing having two TEs on the field will "definitely be a part of the offense", so you could be onto something. Could be why they went with the smufs at WRs, since they could utilize two TEs in the redzone.

If anyone thinks we're worse because we got rid of guys like RandleEl and Levi Jones then you are sorely mistaken. Neither one of those guys should ever make the playing field in a real game. Randle El did nothing but steal playing time from guys that needed the reps in order to improve. Levi? Ha, there's s reason no one signed him until well after the season began and a reason he's not signed now.

Not saying he had potential not saying he didn't. It was preseason when he had the "astonishing" gameplay. He also wasn't given much opportunity to play in regular season. "good preseason / clinton portis comments aside, I don't think he added any element to the group that wasn't already there."

From what I saw with the limited action we as fans were privy to, he was the most fluid 'natural' receiver out of the 3 youngsters we had. While Kelly had the hands and Thomas had the athleticism, Mitchell was the guy who just seemed to be able to play in the moment. What stood out most to me was his composure around the ball, especially in the red zone. Unlike Kelly, he wasn't flustered on fade routes, jump balls, or throws in traffic (albeit in the preseason). These are attributes that are highly difficult to identify in limited action and in practice routes, which is why I'm upset at his being cut so early.

Oh well. I imagine he'll get picked up rather quickly.

Let's see:

Santana Moss - solid vet that has probably already peaked.

Devin Thomas - showed promise in a couple games last season

Malcolm Kelly - disappointing underachiever despite being give many chances so far

Joey Galloway - washed up bum who hasn't been able to get on the field since 2007

Roydell Williams - special teams fodder who can't cut it as an NFL WR

Bobby Wade - on pace to break record for WR that has been cut/released by the most teams but still gets a roster spot

Marques Hagans - who?

Anthony Armstrong - who?

Terrence Austin - check back in a year

And before you suggest that I'm mad, upset, or mourning about Mitchell, at least know where that person actually stands on the subject:

Keep Marko and Austin.

But with Austin filling the need as a return specialist, I can easily see Marko as the odd man out.

Would like to see the opening day wide receiving corps consist of Moss (slot), Kelly, Thomas, Mitchell, and Austin.

You can work with those 5, with a QB like McNabb and upgrades (which they're making) on the offensive line.

Not sure who Darnerian the "artist" is, but if you are interested in talking about football, feel free to hang around.

In 2003, when McCants got PT, he was tied with L.Coles for leading the team in receiving TDs (6).

The following year when Gibbs took over, they decided they didn;t like him and he only got to start one game.

He was a young player who showed great promise, but never got a real chance with a new coaching regime. Too bad he didn;t flourish with another team. Marko also may not, but he showed some promise here.

I don't currently practice law, but as a lawyer we are trained to actually do some research to formulate a view, not just shoot from hip with a stupid gun.

I wonder what caused them to think that Marko should be the first one cut.

Could he really have been worse than the other 10 WRs on the roster? Especially Galloway the dinosaur?

Sure seemed like MM had the physical tools, he wasn't given many opportunities.

I won't say its a bad move, I just wonder what the reasoning is.

Redskins receiver corps can only get better wit hthe release of Randel El. Doesn't matter if you bring in Big Mike Williams as the slot receiver. We are better, period.

Marko Mitchell might become a decent receiver someday, but he ain't no Dez Bryant

Agreed. I’ll just say that I will pretty much be disappointed every time they cut someone that they used/wasted a draft pick on. Even if they were 4th string. Disappointed that I thought he was going to eventually be a good player and it didn’t work out. Not disappointed that my homeboy that I am in love with and is my favorite player of all time because he had a nice preseason game or two just got unfairly cut, and will surely come back to haunt us by scoring 23 touchdowns against us…..

So far, its hard to pick a place where the Skins have improved from a year ago, other than QB.

Its not at RB. The WR corp isn't any better. Unless Trent Williams becomes Chris Samuels pretty quickly, only Hicks looks like an upgrade over Heyer.

The DL has seen a ton of acquisitions, but it was a good unit last year and the top guys are the same.

LB has gotten thinner because of the 3-4 and Smoot for Buchanon isn't much a difference.

We've added a bunch of vets, but this team needed to get younger.

Shanahan can coach with the best, but so far, mixed reviews as a GM.

We kept Thrash around 2-3 years past him being able to perform above "pedestrian" as a receiver because he was good at ST's. We let MM go because he is not an ST'r. Didn't much care for either decision.

Not saying MM is the most popular, valuable, best guy on the team. I am saying that a guy who is 6-4 with a wingspan even longer is very difficult to cover on fades and 3rd down out routes. Especially one who is a good athlete with very good hands, as Marko demonstrated last year.

What a lot of us saw was the potential for a touchdown machine in the red zone. For that reason, many (including myself) feel it would have been in the clubs best interest to give him every chance to realize that potential during the preseason. He has more upside in two years than Galloway, Hagans, Williams or Wade.

If MM can become a guy who nets us 5 - 10 more TD's and a dozen or more 3rd down conversions a year, than I say let somebody else run down kicks.

Do you consider Fred Davis = Ladell Betts? I.e. someone that couldn't do anything while a player was starting in front of them, but stood out when said starter got injured.

Is it fair to say you believe Fred Davis to be heading on a Ladell Betts-type career?

Or can you differ your opinion on a player despite producing similar results under similar circumstances?

Thanks, Aristotle.

I'm aware of McCants' R/B gigs. My point was that this is a football blog and we are talking about Darnerian the "football player".

As a football player it's unfortunate he didn't get a chance to stick around after a promising 2003 season, b/c he didn't jive with a new coaching regime.

There are parallels to Marko Mitchell.

Oh, please don’t dismiss us your eminence….please, no. PLEASE! NO!

I see more potential for Mitchell based upon his build (especially for fade routes), what I saw in preseason, and what his teammates (mostly vets/starters) were saying about him. I can’t think of anything negative that has been said/reported. While Colt performed well in the preseason games, there are a few knocks on the guy (too cocky, poor mechanics, history of injuries). I’m no expert, but my “gut” just tells me that MM had serious potential, and Colt not so much. I’m not saying that Colt won’t make it in the NFL, but I just haven’t seen much to show that he will. I could be wrong of course. I will be disappointed if Colt gets cut simply because it just means it was another wasted pick by Vinny. I am just a lot more disappointed that Mitchell was cut because I had very high hopes for him.

Sure.

At 6'4'' 217 pounds running a sub 4.5 and showing great catching ability, Mitchell possesses ALL the physical tools to be a proto-type wide receiver in the Brandon Marshall/Plaxico Burress mold.

Colt Brennan was considered smallish for an NFL QB and his sidearm-style delivery makes his throws even smaller.

In this last preseason, Colt played very poorly providing observers with a very mixed feeling about his development as a pro-player.

Can't say the same for Marko since he's only had 1 preseason and impressed everyone tremendously.

With Donovan McNabb in place, there's no room/chance for Colt to have a real shot b/c there's only one starter and McNabb is a proven commodity who can still play.

With the additions of Joey Galloway, Bobby Wade and Roydell Williams, many of us are wondering why these retreads who have either hit their ceilings or are past their primes are going to get a shot to make the roster over a guy who still has great great potential, and has a real chance of getting on the field and still being around years down the line.

1) Shanahan's getting a kickback from the old guys' agents.

3) Coaches have looked at Mitchell and the others and don't agree with your assessment.

Couldn't possibly be 3) because you know more about this stuff than the coaches. And I'm ruling out 1) because I think Shahahan doesn't need the kickbacks. So it has to be 2): clerical error. Once they catch it, Mitchell will be back on the roster. Relax.

To be fair, that's all you could really expect, because only in a draft could you obtain a young potential starter.

Otherwise, you are talking about
1) Trading for a player in a rookie contract who wants big bucks
2) Paying big bucks for a free agent, (limited this year because of the CBA)

So... I mean, let's be honest. There wasn't a TON of talent out there just waiting for us to pick up. I was happy we passed over a lot of the guys who wanted large deals, even if it means we have to wait for another draft, a normal offseason, what have you.

Because this is for certain: We probably won't have another uncapped season, so I'd take another 4-12 if it meant we went into 2011 with a clean slate and lessons clearly learned from past sins.

Posted by: zcezcest1 | May 3, 2010 4:25 PM

How many of the older guys have near-locks on jobs? Mike Sellers? Todd Yoder? Joey Galloway?

Look at the roster: 10 rookies, 19 guys with one year's experience, 17 with 2 years experience, 11 with 3 years experience -- that's 57 players with three years or less.

We won't know who has jobs until September and only then can you whine about "we should have gotten younger."

West Coast Offense is about timing and strict route running. Mitchell did the deep route, but did not have experience running shorter timing patterns. And we also need special teams players, something else he does not do. I figure Moss in the slot, Kelly or Thomas wide, the 2 TE's makes a lot of sense since we have 2 that have proven they can get open and run after the catch. Plus they can help with the blocking in the running game. 5 wideouts will probably be on the roster. Moss, that new kid if he can handle return duty and backup Moss in the slot. Those are probably. Kelly and Thomas, then a shootout for the 5th. Kelly and Thomas would not be a lock, one of them could go if they do not perform and provide help on special teams.

Sure, that’s the bottom line, but I am just curious to know that maybe he hadn’t grasped the playbook enough, dropped a ton of balls in the last mini camp, didn’t run the routes crisply, couldn’t get any separation or break any tackles…..stuff like that. Give some sort of rationale as to WHY they feel guys like Galloway are better. I am not “demanding answers” or anything; just curious.

Posted by: dlhaze1 | May 3, 2010 4:28 PM

Ah, you're down because the coach didn't phone to tell you why he cut a fifth string receiver who had four catches last year for 30 yards?

Dude, it's obvious to everyone but you. He cut the guy because he doesn't think they guy can make the team and he wants to concentrate on the ones who can make the team. Do you expect him to say "He can't make the team because he's slow to pick up the offense, he's never where he's supposed to be, and he was late for a meeting?"

Shanahan's not accountable to Redskins fans for the reasons why he cuts people, and I can't think of coaches who come out and give a public performance review after cutting a guy.

love your optimism, but what are you shooting for there... something like 1 out 10?

will be pleased if we're competitive enough to reach 8-8 and show some signs of rebuilding. but unlike last year, wouldn't consider a 9-7 wild-card berth beyond the realm of possibility.

Posted by: moodlymoodlymoo | May 3, 2010 4:41 PM | Report abuse

Yes I am optimistic. I don't go sit at the games, or watch them on television thinking to myself(in an Eyore voice) "Oh well, we're probably gonna lose this game. we'll be lucky to go 8-8."

F*CK THAT! I talk S when we win, I talk it more when we lose. But I never, and I mean never go into the season thinking this team will lose.

If they do they do. Sh*t happens.

But when they win it feels that much better, because I was born into this and I'm not jumping onto any bandwagon.

HTTR from a true fan, and here's to all my predictions coming true.

Yes, I was co-signing your argument.

Posted by: KingJoffeJoffer | May 3, 2010 5:08 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: mattsoundworld

Thing is, I can identify lots of recently arrived parts that are 'old'. Trent Williams is the only place where we got younger.

Among the top 30 players, this is what I see:

DBs, Smoot goes, Buchanon in
LBs, no real change
DL, Carriker and Kemoeatu in, Griff and Monty out
OL, Williams and Hicks in, Samuels and Thomas out
WR, Marko and ARE out, Galloway and Wade in
RB, Ganther, Rock and Betts out, Johnson and Parker in
QB, McNabb and Grossman in, Collins and Campbell out

I look at that and ask again, where is this team getting younger? Most of the new 'in' guys I mentioned are 30 and over.

The WRs are potentially better as 11 & 12 improve, but they haven't made the amount of catches that ARE consistently has.

11 & 12 also got extreme player hating up here.

Grab a hanky, pabs.

"extreme player hating"? What decade is this?

ARE got rightly criticized for sucking at punt return duties. The reason the criticism was right, is because he actually sucked at doing that.

The issue w/ the WR corps is that Brandon Lloyd busted and the draft picks took their sweet time getting onto the field, and so ARE was forced into the #2 receiver slot, even though that wasn't the plan.

So yeah - he did his best and worked hard at #2 WR position.

Stephon Heyer also did his best and worked hard at the tackle position...behind Chris Samuels he's been our 2nd most productive tackle over the past 2 years...impressive, eh?

Based on skill set, strength, and athleticism, Trent compares very well to Michael Oher.

Yeah, I expect the coach to check with me before cuts. They do however, often get asked questions in interviews from reporters who may be curious as to why they cut players. Read it again, I said I wasn't demanding answers, I was just curious.

Posted by: dlhaze1 | May 3, 2010 6:16 PM

maybe our intrepid beat reporters will muster the courage to ask Shanahan about it. he'll probably answer. but I wouldn't expect to hear anything of substance.

something along the lines of... "we like the guys we have, and wanted to give Marko a fair chance to catch on somewhere his talents can be put to use"

it's just good management etiquette not to say overtly negative things about former employees.

and the implicit is obvious... Shanahan thinks he has a better chance of winning with different players.

as others have noted, something tells me Marko Mitchell will eventually surpass Leigh Torrence in the RI lexicon.

Posted by: moodlymoodlymoo | May 3, 2010 6:41 PM | Report abuse

Maybe they will bring back Levi jones (or other)when he/they realizes nobody else is offering him/them jack S$$t and he/they can be the right tackle? Then we redskins fans can worry about the upgrade/downgrade at wr. Because it won't mean anything if McNabb is picking his crack off the ground everytime he tries to throw the ball. No O-line= bad wr/qb/rb.

Posted by: Burrasta1 | May 3, 2010 6:44 PM | Report abuse

The simple fact of the matter is that, while everyone is entitled to their own opinion and we can all see different things while watching the games, the coaches (1) are much better than all of us armchair QBs and wanna-be/pretend football people on RI, and (2) have access to these players a whole lot more than we do. By all means, debate Marko Mitchell's cut today, but it's a completely pointless waste of energy to get angry and cross-wise with people when in reality none of us truly knows much about a mostly pre-season player like Marko.

I mean, seriously...so many up here get themselves sooo attached to these bottom-of-the-roster players. It's really not that shocking that a guy who ranks no higher than 45th on the roster gets cut by a new coach who had no involvement in his acquisition. If he's as talented as some up here believe (and I think he's got some skills if put in the right situation), he'll catch on elsewhere and ball out.

I'll never get why some of the same people that hate Rock Cartwright (a 7th round pick gone right) so much and can't wait to get him off the roster also sit in a puddle of their own tears when no-name slappies like Marko Mitchell and Marcus Mason (who have done close to nothing in a regular season NFL game) get sent packing. Unreal...

Yeah, and if I recall, people also criticized Oher's work ethic during the pre-draft madness, much like Trent. Let's hope that Trent becomes something akin to how good Michael Oher was last year.

"So long Marko. I'd rather we'd a put him on the practice squad than cut him."

If he's all that, some team will give him a shot.

(If I'm him, I go balmer and try to hook up with the ravens.)

And if that doesn't work out for him, he can at least say he was on an NFL roster long enough to become the hope and dream of a down-on-its-luck fanbase.

LH, I saw that story from UVa lacrosse. Just awful. And I hate myself for it, but I'm pretty sure I'll read every story as more details are made public, thereby contributing to the pervasive spread of ugliness masked as "news" in the culture.

On the Marko Mitchell Sturm und Drang, let me put it this way: I hope the Shanahan brain trust gets more of these moves right than wrong over the long haul. The proof of the pudding will be in the eating, and we're exactly four months from the beginning of the season. Can't get here soon enough, can it?

Hail to 'em.

MOL... although the second and third terms in the last equation approach zero in the limit, thus yielding the sufficient approximation:

DMcC ~ MM

Also, a few people mentioned Antwaan Randle El up above, and while I love the guy as a person/locker room leader/whatever, I think it's a case of addition by subtraction, as we saw not so long ago with James Thrash.

Just because a dude is experienced and competent and reliable at doing mundane things unspectacularly -- an occasional reception for a first down, say -- shouldn't get him a roster spot or significant playing time at the expense of a younger, faster but more "raw" dude... y'know, someone with "upside." For goodness' sake, make way for the kids. (But not you, Marko.)

Yes, stole time last year from Marko Mitchell who is 6'4 and runs much better than ARE.

Plenty of rookie LT's have played well:
Ryan Clady
Joe Thomas
Orlando Pace
Jake Long
Sam Baker
Chris Samuels
Joe Staley
(I'm sure there are plenty more)

In fact, the reason O-linemen are considered safe picks is because of their success rate and ability to start immediately.

(I'm uncomfortable, as a namby-pamby liberal, with referring to a black man as "Silverback." Yes, even if he gave himself that nickname.)

One thing I forgot to mention above about ARE was how absolutely brutal it was watching him return punts. I mean, seriously, it was as if Gibbs and then Zorn were just effing with us by trotting him out there.

"Hey, defense, thanks for holding 'em! Super job fighting your guts out. By way of thanks, we're going to put Antwaan out there to receive the punt. He has virtually zero chance of doing anything with the return, and a fair catch is the best we hope for because it's better than running backwards and losing yardage. What, you don't enjoy his work as a return man? Maybe you oughta get more turnovers, then!" Ugh.

changing subjects... Mike Sellers says "it's still 'extremely tough' for NFL players to resist the temptation of steroids"

still, my guess is that steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs are rampant in the NFL.

How do you get people to forgive a few stars for using PEDs?

Make everyone guilty of using them so people brush it off as normal.

This is the solution to any moral issue!

And ARE should have been cut.

Tell me ChrisLarry,
Bruce Allen has gone out and brought in his former Buc WR Joey Galloway.
The guy is how old? Was cut last year by N.E.
Why bring in Galloway washed up old man he is, and dump Marko w/out seeing what he could do in camp?
What are your thoughts on this Chrislarry?

Galloway is a waste of laundry detergent by the staff.

Marko Mitchell should be used as a goal line receiver AT LEAST. The guy is tall, can jump, can catch, and knows how to use his body.

Even as a decoy, he'd have been worth the roster spot. Galloway? Wade?

Pure BS, based on draft order. Nothing more. Don't let anyone convince you the coaches didn't like "tape" on Marko Mitchell. Because, if that's the case, Kelly and Thomas should have been let go year 1. Draft order classism. Nothing more.

No explanation other than draft order. Period.

Explain all you want to, but you're as full of it as the coaches. Draft order worshipers.

Bad move. Dumb move. I hope he gets picked up by Philly. We'll have a lot of fun watching them toss lobs while Carlos Rogers is covering him.

In August, she was found guilty of two felony counts for possession of a controlled substance and the manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance, and she was sentenced to 10 years' probation."

"...I actually liked Marko.... but I don't think he'll be an impact player anywhere. we'll see."

Once McNabb went to throw at a redskins' voluntary camp, the first rumor that floated out was that he wanted the skins to pursue T.O..

All of that was refuted, of course.

But since then, the curious case of the redskins' receivers--a roster group thought to be set-- came into view.

The team has brought in a number of vet receivers--not a one named T.O.--and drafted a 7th rounder speed guy.

Gotta question:

Does all of this suggest McNabb came to camp, threw some balls to guys he eventually found wanting, and the team has responded by auditioning vet types to augment MK, Austin, Moss, and Thomas?

I'd say, yes.

Other than Moss, our receivers either aren't that good or haven't proven themselves yet.

I'm not doing well at reading the tea leaves on this.

Joey Galloway? How does this make sense? If he wasn't effective with Brady in NE, why would he be better here?

McCardell did some good stuff for us in his last year. Trust a vet? Maybe that's part of it.

Bobby Wade is a little guy with an 11 yard/catch average. Is that a need. A small guy running underneath? Another ARE?

The WaPo reporters have written that Shanahan thinks he can coach a player up to the best stuff they see on tape. Which is why the Mitchell move makes so little sense. The bit that Mitchell did, looked pretty good.

I'm sure there are reasons behind these moves -- its not obvious to me what the reasons are.
