Will Larry Johnson be the new RB?

With Clinton Portis likely missing Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos, the Redskins could have a new running back on the roster in the next few days. What's not as clear: whether Larry Johnson will be that new running back.

Johnson was released this morning by the Kansas City Chiefs. If he clears waivers, he'd become an unrestricted free agent and any team would be free to negotiate for his services.

There are several reasons the deal could go down. First, Portis' status is unknown. Coach Jim Zorn was essentially guessing that Portis would be unavailable this weekend. He said the running back did suffer a concussion in Sunday's loss at Atlanta. The two spoke this morning and Portis told Zorn he still had a headache. The league is taking concussions more seriously than ever, evidenced most recently by the fact that the Eagles' Brian Westbrook missed his second straight game last weekend since suffering a concussion against the Redskins on Oct. 26.

Johnson, who leaves Kansas City after a drama-filled couple of weeks, turns 30 later this month. He wouldn't be a long-term solution for the Redskins, but neither was Shaun Alexander, whom the Redskins signed last October when Ladell Betts was banged up.

Speaking to reporters today, Zorn did not rule out the possibility of the Redskins pursuing Johnson. He said the team has had internal discussions this morning and will continue to talk about the troubled running back.

Zorn said the team will likely sign a running back if Portis can't play -- he specifically mention Quinton Ganther, whom the team released last Friday. As for Johnson, "I don't know," Zorn said.

"I need to have a longer conversation than I've had to make a decision," Zorn said.

Because of his Johnson's salary -- he'd be paid a prorated sum of $4.55 million base salary for the remainder of the season -- Johnson is expected to clear waivers.

"A part of him is excited and a part of him is very regretful," Johnson's agent, Peter Schaffer, told The Associated Press today. "There's a lot of feelings going on right now. It's analogous to breaking up with a girlfriend. Maybe you saw it coming, but it still hurts when it happens."

Johnson hasn't had a 1,000-yard season since 2007. This season he had 358 yards on 132 carries before the Chiefs suspended him two weeks ago. On Oct. 25, Johnson insulted fans on his Twitter account, questioned coach Todd Haley and used a gay slur. The following day, in the Chiefs' locker room, he repeated the slur to reporters, prompting the suspension.

Johnson has plenty of local ties to the area. He was born in Pomfret, Md., his father, Larry Johnson Sr., coached high school football in Southern Maryland for years at Maurice J. McDonough High -- followed by two seasons at T.C. Williams -- before taking an assistant coaching job at Penn State in 1996.

Chase Daniel is on a entirely different team, we can't sign him, we can't play him and he isn't an option....

I hope this doesn't mean we can't bring back Leigh Torrence. Isn't New Orleans a farm team for us?

Yeah, give the NFL a call, DeAngelo, maybe people will forget your OLE! move on Michael Turner--the one you perfected a few weeks ago when you shied away from hitting a receiver.

No doubt Smith was obviously the bad guy in all this.

Keep up the taunting, Cork, and he's coming after you next. That is, as long as you're out of bounds. Get in bounds and he'll give you a ten yard cushion.

I couldn't be less interested in Larry Johnson coming to the Skins, so I'm confident there will be a press conference tomorrow in Ashburn announcing him as our new RB.

The only question is how much he'll pay Smoot for that #27 jersey... ugh...

Vontae Davis.

DC Guy who already has more INTs in his 8 games the CR22, a higher draft pick, has in his carrer.

Davis is legit. Ofcourse you're gonna lose some battles with Randy Moss 1-on-1, but he wasn't the reason they lost the game....

Are you kidding me? Why would we sign him, because he's performed in the past and is famous? He is a few days from 30, his numbers have been in decline since 2006, and he's injury prone. That and he is an attitude problem. PLEASE I hope this is just bad reporting and not an actual possibility. All of our running backs are ancient and ineffective, and it is time to run some youth out there, not bring in someone else's problem.

$4.55 mill?? For the rest of the season???

No way, Vinny signs him that cheap.

I bet Vinny figures out a way to send the Chiefs a 2nd rounder as an add-on.

Posted by: p1funk | November 9, 2009 2:04 PM | Report abuse

Wrong -- he has not had a 1000 yard rushing season since 2006, NOT 2007. Furthermore, a 1000 yard season is not the yardstick it once was. From 2007-09, Mr. Johnson has averaged 66 YPG and 3.7 Yards Per Carry. No thank you, let's see what Mason can do.

Posted by: jksesq1 | November 9, 2009 2:05 PM | Report abuse

yeah...right...when all hell's breaking loose around you what you want is a first-rate, stand-up, team-first guy like Larry Johnson to help out. Dios mio

btw, love the idea of having Vicenzo the Befuddled become QB. Let him get first hand experience of playing behind that awesome O line he put together.

Larry Johnson?! Sweet. Older, slower, and dooshier! Fantastic!

Now, since he'll clear waivers, how will the Skins get the obligatory 3rd round pick over to the Chiefs?

Good God. This team just can't learn.

Posted by: AppleScience | November 9, 2009 2:08 PM | Report abuse

Sorry bub, you're thinking is all wrong. You need to use the logic in the Skins universe:

*Ladell Betts is a backup, therefore he cannot be a starting RB ever in any situation for this team, therefore we need to spend alot of $$ to get a starter, therefore we need to sign Larry Johnson.

*Rock Cartwright is too valuable to the Skins as a not-explosive kick returner, our special teams suck and so we don't want to do anything to make things worse by removing our consistently not-explosive kick returner, therefore we cannot under any circumstances have Rock Cartwright playing RB, therefore we must sign Larry Johnson.

Posted by: p1funk | November 9, 2009 2:16 PM | Report abuse

The Skins have four RB's on the active roster:
(1) Portis, age 28,
(2) Betts, age 30,
(3) Cartwright, age 30,
(4) Sellers, age 34.

It is ridiculous we have not replenished at this position, but of course, how can you replenish a noncritical position when you have so many needs and you treat draft picks like toilet paper.

Just look around the division: the Giants have Jacobs, age 27 (but fewer than 1/3 the career carries of Portis), and Bradshaw, age 23. The Cowboys have Barber, age 26 (but fewer than 40% the career carries of Portis) and Tashard Choice, age 24. And the Eagles have speedster LeSean McCoy who just turned 21. I believe we have less young RB talent than any other team in the league unless I am missing someone.

Posted by: jksesq1 | November 9, 2009 2:16 PM | Report abuse

Why not play Ganther? We got him so play him. He might beast out. You never know. Guys who got something to prove play with extra emotion. Something this team needs. That being said....2-14 ensures us a shot at Okung or T.Williams the only 1st round Tackles. So lose lose lose, but still show improvement.

Silly silly man.

We all know that professional football players will be more motivated to play hard for your team when you give them tens of millions of dollars up front for having done nothing for you.

This is the bedrock principle around which the Skins have been built.

Why would that philosophy suddenly change?

Exactly!

So once he clears waivers we can sign him to a standard $25mill w/ $10mill guaranteed.

But don't worry! Next year, after LJ has done nothing, we will extend him and convert alot of that guaranteed money into bonus money and pay it out over the life of the contract!

Thus, when it's all said and done, we'll have LJ's contract on the books eating up dead cap space until 2020!

Moe is right and that's probably why they won't sign LJ.

One of the basic tenets of the Skins organization is this:

If something is clearly not working, keep doing it because it might suddenly and inexplicably start to work.

This guiding principle has been behind all the Skins decision-making.

Right now, our running game is not working, so logic demands that they stick with it as it is...

Remember, old guys you've signed be4 and how it worked out everytime? Jason Taylor, whom you sent a 4th round pick that Miami has AND Jason today; Deion; Bruce; Archuleta; Sean Gilbert; Jeff George; Shaun Alexander; Brunell; Carrier; Haynesworth who is 29; Alvin Harper; LOL

Who is next?
Larry Johnson? Yes, that'll help the pass protection and make the playoffs.

thats one thing you always appreciated about lavar, was how hard hitting he was....while not great for playing his position, he could hit ....

Posted by: BeantownGreg1 | November 9, 2009 2:36 PM

Lavar separated players from the ball and knew how to get after the QB. That's the kind of thing that changes games. I have nothing but respect for how Lavar played his position.

3 Pro Bowls in 5 years with the Skins (and a career cut short by injury), I wish we had more players like him. Good coaches know how to use the talent thay have.

As much as I can't stand the Eagles (and worse, Philly fans), I really really hate that Dallas did not lose last night. F Dallas.

Nothing, nothing, nothing worth talking about regarding that game where those 53 guys put on uniforms at the Georgia Dome EXCEPT ... Ladell Betts! Sheesh, Betts is starting to make Ahmad Bradshaw look like a lesser back!

bean, I hadn't seen those pictures thanks.

I watched the game live and the countless replays. No doubt he put his hands on Hall, questionable to do that for sure. I just can't tell if it was a punch or a shove.

Yet, my hunch says give the benefit of the doubt to Smith. Smith took over a horrible situation last year and had an immediate impact, there is no denying it.

He seems intense something I like in a coach. But he was coming to the defense of his franchise QB. You don't think the players respect Smith even more.

BTW, who knows what Hall said during the melee? MeAngelo was pretty lippy while he was there. That trait along with his inability to tackle, is probably what sent him packing.

while not on the topic, was that a bogus roughing call on Lorenzo or what? Was nice to see the defense put some real heat on the QB.

Guess Ryan got tired of being crunched, so he gave it to Turner instead ...

This just in from the NFL network:

Vinny Cerratto has just signed Larry Johnson after clearing waivers the only problem is that Vinny threw in a third and fourth round pick. The problem is that when informed that that could not be possible to give away picks because LJ didnt belong to a team. Vinny irrate because no one would take the picks has since put the third and fourth round picks on Ebay, thus this years draft will be slightly different because it has now been learned that those picks have been purchased by Miami Dolphins. After acquiring the third and fourth round pick Bill parcells quickly sold them back to the Redskins for their 2010 first and second round pick.

Mr. larry Jonhson will be in a Washington Uniform come Sunday. We just need to clear it with the league. Even if he clears waivers, or in this case cut, the organization is committed to show our need/want of his services therefore paying his current salary wont be an issue. Good players need an incentive to come here and play for this organization this will only add to our current playoff quality roster.
Whether I am Vicenzo S. Cerrato or not it doesn't matter. This is a public avenue to express, support and out all those malcontent fans.

k, check out the bog, the pictures clearly show smith throwing a punch at hall....its undeniable that it was a punch, there are clearly 2 pics/angles of the whole thing....

you and cork need to see the pics, and then make a judgement on it....Hall did nothing wrong in this instance...

Posted by: BeantownGreg1 | November 9, 2009 2:27 PM | Report abuse

Smith was out of control.

They showed replays of him blowing up at the ref in profanity-laced fit right before he ran into the fray...yeah, I'm sure he was going in to maintain order...

The Falcons basically had DHall surrounded...how the heck was he supposed to "get out of there".

The best part was when Hayneworth ran over and shoved someone, then the Falcons turned and saw "92", and the whole thing died down. I bet they were like "Oh, snap. Albert's one crazy mofo. Let's not piss him off".

Even so, I gotta give Smith some props for jumping in.

If a similar thing happened on our sideline, my bet is that JZ would go diving into a pile of towels and hide out behind the Gatorade bucket...

I think Blache continues to play Orakpo at SAM for two reasons: (1) he is under orders from Snyderatto to do so because that was its vision when it drafted him, and (2) I think Blache honestly feels that his options to replace Orakpo at SAM are worse than continuing to play Daniels at end on early downs.

Larry Johnson is a 'bad character' guy?

What did he do in kansas city that was so sh!tty?

The team melted around him during the time he was about to explode on the scene as a dominant player.

So he's bitter.

He can stand in line behind the appropriately named Dick Chaney.

I heard Johnson used a vulgar term for gays.

Now, that's not right.

He should be condemned for his hatred.

A league that has a team named 'redskins' should protest his actions loudly.

The NFL certainly doesn't want to chase away the hordes of homosexuals who crowd it's gates every Sunday looking for fine tight end play.

Goodness knows hate in any context is shameful.

But the same people who hate negaive slurs look the other way when football players drop the n-word freely during on field play.

They bob their heads in rhythm when the word pops up in a rap song as, in their minds, some studio-gangsta dude's just, "Keepin' it real!"

They're 'keepin' it real,' all right.

Real dumb.

Please do not make another stupid roster move. Larry Johnson is NOT the long term solution to this team and is another headache with a bad attitude. We have enough of those. The season is over. Do not compond the misery with this locker room poison. Give Betts a chance. He did well Sunday. Lets move to youth and the future, not the same old story of collecing the useless rejects of other teams (ie D. Hall). The Redskins should be tired of bad publicty and being a laughning stock.

Portis is done. Betts is the best option for now. The team needs to start rebuilding now, which is why now would be a great time to part company with Vinny. I fail to see any benefits from bringing in another high priced, washed up, former star. Arrogant Larry Johnson would not be my choice to be a cornerstone of a rebuilt franchise. Maybe the Cowboys will pick him up, that would be nice. I'd rather have Marcus Mason as a backup, provided he commits to learning how to block. I'd rather have the undrafted fullback who was just promoted from the practice squad. Larry Johnson would fit right in with an overrated squad that consistently underperforms.

The funny thing about LJ coming here is that the Skins staff is actually going to "discuss it".

Point blank, this would be among the stupidest moves imaginable. An over the hill, overpaid, underachieving RB with character issues. If any "discussion" on LJ lasted more than 11 seconds, they spent too much time on it.

Besides all of those things, he's not such a bad guy. KC given him a 2nd chance and he screwed that up. The last thing the Redskins need is a player who has demonstated he's a bad apple, but with Vinny you never know.

I'd be happy if the Skins just used Betts and Rock the rest of the season or until Portis was actually healthy. They both have played well and offer more than any guy off the street could provide. Much ado about nothing.

Saw the postgame intervew and noted that DHall revised his version of events several times over the short span of the interview -- and continued to do so until the Redskin PR flacks intervened and shooed the media away.

DHall is the one who should be fined... for aggregious jawboning after the play -- jumping into somebody else's fight -- and impersonating an NFL football player.

Again, if the guy could play even half as well as he yapped, they'd open a special wing at Canton for him and all of the other active players who are sure bets to make the Hall of Fame. However, as it stands -- all he'll ever be remembered for is being an(other) overpriced underperformer.

zcezce - My lord I did! I just assume I lose every week because I have the worst FF team of all time although when I actually remember I've tried to make it a little better.

Well look at me I've won as many games as the Skins and I don't have a 'play off caliber team' . . .I'd like to thank the big JC, pigs for becoming footballs, the dude who invented the internet, my Wifi set up, my memory for sometimes remembering to do something with FFL, Twix for just being the best candy, the earth for being round so I can have satellite TV and my dog who barks along when I cheer for the Skins . . . been mighty quiet this season though . .

I honestly think they will pass on this one. If anything they bring back Mason, Alridge or Ganther. Wait until Betts plays against Denver's run D. Then there will be people on here screaming for another change at RB. Betts is 30, slow, and lacks breakaway speed (see Chris Johnson, DeAngelo Williams, and Frank Gore)

Well, it's not like they're going to punch their own... witness the witless El Grande Zoron -- and his medium sized approach to big problems on both sides of the line.

Funny thing is, if true, the opposing coach may have done more to get some semblance of a pulse from this team than anyone on our side of the field.

Pretty much.

I maintain that if the same kind of scene broke out on our sideline, Zorn would have cowered behind Joe Bugel and Danny Smith meekly asking them to protect him from whatever mean stuff the bad men were doing...

Posted by: p1funk | November 9, 2009 3:34 PM | Report abuse

4th - please can I just have one more. : )

Looks like 51 on Atl started jawing at DHall who naturally jawed back and then the strength dude jumped in way too quickly. I think Smith screaming for a flag got his players all riled up so they surrounded DHall fast.
It could be Smith took a shove at DHall or it could be that DHall shoved Smith's arm up and Smith elbow was cocked and thus looks like a swing.

If DHall gets fined Landry should pay some of it what a stupid shot. At some point he needs to be fined by the team for these it's practically one a game now.

DHall on the ATL sidelines looked like a MS-13 Gang Intiation.

I think you probably dish out a fine to Each of those Atlanta players, 5 K each, throw a 10 K at Hall, as he is partly responsible. 25 K for the ATL coach, 50K if he does not issue a public apology/statement. Suspend the strength coordinator for a game.

Big Albert should not be fined, as he really looked to be there to stop a fight.

Danny, you signed D. Hall like he was a young Deion RIGHT AFTER THE RAIDERS CUT HIM. Notice Atlanta got better?

Signed Deion right after Dallas cut him.
And Bruce when Buffalo let him go.
Jason Taylor after he danced on TV and after Miami let him go + sent Miami a 4th Round pick.

You signed Archuleta to big $ when he had no other offers. Traded 3 picks for Jason Campbell when I'm sure 1 pick would have gotten him.

And couldn't even wait to see what other offers Albert actually make have gotten, probably to the Patriots for 1/2 of what you offered.

LOL
Haven't you learned that they're available for a reason...and $pent doesn't equal success in the NFL. Find your own players. Stop paying $100k for $50k used cars with high milage.

BTW, I know this is a couple of days but did anyone hear about Erasmus James?

(PFT)Former Vikings pick Erasmus James arrested
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on November 5, 2009 11:16 PM ET
The last we heard of former first-round Vikings pick Erasmus James, the defensive end was indefinitely suspended by the NFL.

After an arrest Thursday morning, consider James' suspension, um, more indefinite.

James was arrested for punching a "friend" in the face. Authorities say it happened after James tried to order a drink after closing time at a bar near the University of Wisconsin, where James went to college.

If James was a senior without a budding NFL career, this could make for a funny story. When you are That Guy still reliving college glory while your NFL career is on life support, it's a little sad.

James was last with the Redskins, who cut him after acquiring him via trade from the Vikings. This incident may finish James' chances of getting back in the league if that indefinite suspension ever finds an end....

Larry Johnson:
1. Former RB star of the Kansas City Chief (check)
2. Wants to be overpaid (check)
3. 30 yrs, can't run anymore, doesn't block good, maybe Shaun Alexander II, similar to Portis (check, check, check, check)
4. Has an attitude problem, tweets and stuff, will probably build the next "me, me, me attitude" like Me-Angelo Hall (CHECK)
5. will probably get injured with the OLINE reserves Vinny signed from the CFL. (check)

well looks like all this clears him to be what the Redskins are looking for. Vinny is ready to give up the 1st, 2nd and other draft picks to the Chiefs and sign Johnson to a 5 yr extension.

WELCOME TO THE WASHINGTON CLOWNS!

Danny signed Jeff George - to be a starting QB.
Wow and LOL

Traded future HOF Bailey for talented Portis, who will not make the HOF and be known as a DC Halloween charater too.

Brought Vinny in, not once, but twice - like he built the SF title teams when he didn't.

Signed #46 to starting RB $ when he's a backup - meanwhile to run behind college D-III linemen.

Paid top dollar for Randle-El then watched the Steelers replace him with last years younger and better SB MVP Holmes.

Clueless Danny

Danny, sometimes addition is by subtraction. Notice Dallas got better by releasing the RB from 2 years ago (Jones) who is doing nothing in Seattle...and T.O.

I assume that if next season plays out with no CBA and is considered an "uncapped" year, the Redskins could hypothetically cut their whole roster and take the would be "cap hit" on everyone in one year- next season. The team could be out of salary cap hell and have a clean slate before next season! If this can truly happen, it is exactly what every Redskins fan should be pulling for right now. NO CBA! While I'm dreaming, maybe The Danny can come to his senses and hire a real team president for next season to set up the whole operation- Tony Dungy comes to mind. Dungy then hires a true GM for this very attractive job- all draft choices including a top 5 pick, a completely clean salary cap slate, best division in football in the nations capital with rich football tradition, a super rich owner that will spend the dough, and the best fans in the NFL!. Mr. Reid- can you tell us how an uncapped year would work with regard to getting rid of bad contracts? Most believe the redskins would overspend for a quick fix in an uncapped year and I'm hoping for the opposite- CUT EVERY BAD CONTRACT and take the hit! Is this possible?

Better playcalling?
Still = 17 points - bottom line.
Whether they called great plays and scored 17, or scored all 17 in the 1st half, or you feel called a bad offensive game and scored 17 ... it's still 17 points and a loss.

And I have some land to sell you in the middle of the Anacostia River in Dc if you believe its all Zorn's fault.

Did Zorn pick 1 guy on the roster?
Nope, not even the QB.

Posted by: kedavis | November 9, 2009 5:13 PM | Report abuse

All I can say is, oh god.

DANNY -- HIRING EXPENSIVE PLAYERS DOESN'T WORK -- YOU'VE BEEN DOING THAT FOR 10 YEARS.

Ladell Betts should be given a chance. He got 70 yards on 15 carries yesterday, average 4.7 per carry. That's better than any game Portis has had this year, minus one long run.

The Skins offense looked just fine, briefly, this week, when Portis was out. Portis is over-rated and his best games are behind him (maybe way behind him). The fact that the Skins continue to rely on him is a major source of their problems on offense.

Sorry Clinton baby I love ya but it's time for someone else to carry the ball.

I remember when vermeil came to the eagles he got rid of alot of player's in the off season and some in the regular season. many of the players get huge checks and do absolutely nothing. ok...

laron landry made the bad hit out of bounds on the falcon's quarterback...

d. hall was coming to the side line to save him from the falcons wrath...

next thing you know, hall is surrounded by a dozen falcon palyers and coaches...

d. hall, yea, he can't tackle, he talks too much, but to hall's defense, 2 wrongs don't make a right!...

no coach, whether it be little league, high school, bob knight in college and van-gundy (NY Knicks) in the pros, has a right to put their hands on a player...

a coach is supposed to be the steady influence in a situation like that...

where is the outrage that d. hall was jacked up by a dozen falcon players and coaches?...

yet, these idiots on 980 sportstalk radio like kornheiser, sheehan, laverro, czaben and pollin seem to think that it's allright for coaches to not only lay hands on players but to threaten them as well...

all d. hall did was come to the aid of his fellow team mate and was literally jumped by these thugs including the coach...

shameful on the falcon's coach and shameful on these idiot 980 sportalk jock wannabes...

if zorn did what coach smith did these 980 hypocrites would be all over zorn like the falcons were on d. hall...

again, no coach has a right to put his hands on a player, the falcon players seemed to be doing a good job of jacking hall up on their own...

the league needs to fine coach smith for his actions...

it's funny that these hypocritical 980 sportalk wannabes didn't talk about why no one was helping hall until haynesworth came over...

where were the other redskins?...

if i were dan snyder i would fire all the above 980 radio personnel and start over!...
