Will Mark Be Back?
Mark has said time and again that he still loves the game and wants to play as long as he can. Coach Joe clearly thinks highly of him and was angst filled over finally having to pull him. So I could see No. 8 still being here next season, in some capacity. But I also think a lot of things would have to happen first.
Namely, Mark would have to restructure his contract. He's due a $5.2 million base salary, which is not guaranteed, and Mark is plenty bright enough to know he's not going to get that kind of coin here or anyplace else. And staying here as a backup would likely better than going someplace now, considering he knows this system and the head coach is probably his biggest supporter around right now.
Mark re-did his deal last year during the CBA crunch - turned out to be a non-factor after the CBA extension - and I think he would definitely do it again to stay here in the future. Might have to accept something around the veteran minimum, but I could see it happening. I wonder if JC would, privately, feel little weird about having Coach Joe's main man over his shoulder as he tries to adapt to the pro game, but I could also see Joe wanting Mark around to fill in if need be.
How Jason plays the next seven games will have a lot of say in the matter as well, but my early instinct is we could still see Brunell in Washington in 2007
Randoms: Got an email informing me of an on-line auction on behalf of the National Prostate Cancer Coalition. Dinner with Dexter Manley. Sounds like fun.
Here's the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260052599580 ... Still have to catch up with last week's episode of The Wire. Been swamped covering this crazy team ... Saw some kind of yellow Hummer customer service van from Eastern Motors on the Toll Road the other day, and it had Portis, decked out as Southeast Jerome, splashed across the entire back. ARE was sprawled across one side of the thing, too. Pretty weird. Anyone else see this? ... Heard Bil Maas is doing the Skins game this weekend. Have they really gotten that bad?
