The QB Question, Favre and Vick

The Brett Favre/Michael Vick email has been coming in at a steady clip the past few days. While anything is possible, neither of these guys makes much sense for the Redskins right now. For starters, one is claiming that he's retired and the other is incarcerated.

Even if Favre were to un-retire again, he was awful in the second half of last season with the Jets. He's another year older and would be coming in cold. The Skins would really be throwing the quarterback situation into disarray if they were to go for an old guy they passed on a year ago.

As for Vick, the first order of business for him will be convince Commissioner Roger Goodell that he's worthy of reinstatement. Apart from that not-insignificant hurdle, bringing him into this system would be beyond tricky, given his accuracy issues. The Redskins have shunned the Wildcat and that's where he'd be a better fit, especially after being out of football for so long. He may not even return as a quarterback.

Despite the drama of the offseason, minicamp opens with Jason Campbell the starter, period, and barring injury that's unlikely to change.

Chase is under the NFL you must be this tall to ride chart. Pretty much if you aint on the big side of 6'2 you cannot play QB or at least get drafted, if you do get drafted and are under that height at QB then you probably broke some records along the way. Plus he played in a spread passing offense, that always hurts a players stock if they are a QB, RB, WR or OL, just look at crabtree this year, although that also had bat sh!t crazy Al written all over it.

The Skins haven't made their offense better going into 2009. The only guys who could be upgrades over the 2008 version are last years draft picks and Campbell himself.

The number of guys on the decline, however, is substantial. Its amazing how Vinny could overlook the OL in the draft. Doing nothing means the risks are huge, especially to the QB. At least we don't face the Steelers or Ravens.

True.

But the issue with having our type of offense is that if we get down by 10 points, can we count on Campbell's arm to lead a comeback?

Last season, the answer to that question was 'no' and teams knew this and attacked to offense in the third quarter of most games.

We have the defense to shut folks down, but we don't have the offense to blow people out or match a scoring team point for point if the defense are playing poorly, which means the kicking game and defensive touchdowns/turnovers are at a premium.

Whaaa? Why would people be emailing you about Favre and Vick.

I may want Vick, but dude is STILL in jail...

Posted by: 4thFloor | April 30, 2009 2:22 PM | Report abuse

The Skins team during the last half of the season was abysmal. There were two primary culprits. The first was a lack of a receiving threat outside of an undersized Moss and Cooley. The second was a pitiful OL. Unless Thomas/Kelly step up, or the OL miraculously stays healthy for the first time in years, the offense will stink again.

Favre is done. I wouldnt mind Vick. He is low risk, high reward. Danny would get his newsworthy qb without giving up any draft picks. He wouldnt serve as a threat to JC and could serve as a bridge should JC leave next season.

Posted by: MistaMoe

We were down 14-0 to philly (#5 rated defense) ... and won. But falling behind 10 points to the Steelers or Ravens? Not many will come back vs those teams.

With our defense, we shouldn't fall behind by 10 points very often.

Lets face it, the Skins have invested much more $$ and draft picks on defense -- and they've executed better with defensive selections.

Since 2003, Campbell is the only 1st round pick on offense, while ST21, Landry, Orakpo and Rogers went on defense. Campbell was the 25th pick overall, the rest are #13 or earlier.

So we win with defense and have an offense that makes few mistakes. I'm fine with that approach.

Smart guy earned academic acheivement awards throughout college. Good candidate for a special teams guy and has played several positions which makes him versatile

But sometimes you get in a gunfight and you hope your gunslinger can, well, sling it.

Teams crowded our o-line and smothered our small receivers and dared JC to beat them with his arm last year. And it's a tactic used against us that worked

Hopefully, the secretive mini-camp is about fixing that situation.

Barno, it all depends. If Dock can resume his semi-elite form that he had his last year here, then the offense will be better. However, if he does not assume that form again, then the only "upgrade" in him over Kendall is the ability to practice on Wed. and his hage.

Pete Kendall outplayed Dockery in 2008. By a lot. Dockery solves the problem of age at RG, but he's not a major performance upgrade

Even a decent #2 isn't fully necessary. If he can become a solid #3 (400+ yards), and Kelly a solid #4 (300+ yards) that puts Campbell around 3800 yards for the season.

And that's not including Fred Davis. If he puts up 200+ yards, Campbell's at 4000 for the year.

(Gosh, it sounds so simple when I put it like that...)

Not exactly true. Samuels could upgrade himself simply by staying healthy. Same with Randy Thomas. Same with Santana Moss. And when they were, this was a top 10 offense (like in the beginning of the season).

Randy Moss was the exception to the rule (69 receptions, 1300 yds in his rookie year) and T.O. wasn't even T.O. in his first year (35 rec., 520 yds as a rookie) AND that was with Steve Young tossing him the ball.

Point being, give the kids a break and let's see how they do their second year in the league...you might be surprised...

I think Thomas will do something this year...I have concerns that Kelley is a bust due to injuries, hope not, but think might be the case. Also hoping that if that is the case that Snyder sees that Cerrato is awful at scouting. i would like to see us hire some of the scouting guys that Pioli just fired from the Chiefs.

I would also like to see F. Davis play a big part in our offense like a Witten type, straight down the seams threat. Since I am wishing, I will take Leroy Hill and Larry Foote as well. Mcintosh, and the rest go to back up role and Orakpo stay put at DE.

Anyone hear anything good about the WR we took in the late rounds, any positive info yet.

That's what we did last season. Worked fine until the running attack stalled. The passing game wasn't able to compensate.

Which is why the best thing we could do for our running game is improve our passing -- especially the red zone stuff.

And the best thing we could do for our entire offensive game plan is to get some turnovers from the defense.

Why does everyone want Vick in every other position other than QB.. Remember he took the falcons to the playoffs and won on the road with Sub-Par receivers and his arm is 2 times as strong and accurate as the poster child Jay Cutler who btw has not won anything .. compare stats, 1000 yards rushing didnt help either with high 4.2 speed. The only person that could stop Vick was himself... Just because he is not the NFL protptype slow drop back stay in the pocket QB dont reduce him to playing RB or DB.. Compare Stats...

As for Vick, I doubt he'll be a Redskin, but I bet he lands somewhere in the NFL. He's done his time, and I think he can still play and maybe get his life back on track.

I'd like to first say Jason Campbell should be the Redskins quarterback! I haven't seen one QB in my lifetime that has been successful throwing the ball or leading his team into the playoffs, or
the Superbowl that didn't have a good offensive line! Our O-Line has sucked for years now and even if another QB was in here what would everyone be saying when the results were the same? Does anyone remember Clinton Portis even fantasized about running behind a different O-Line last year! Now Jason Campbell has prasied his O-Line for what? Jason has also taken the high road to the organizations attempts to bring in another QB. I'll say this, Jason Campbell has shown alot of heart and he's shown alot of character! If I was a General Manager for a team I'd take a guy like that any day! With all the nuckleheads in the league saying and doing whatever they want, how about giving the class act a chance to shine!

I agree. It could be fun to watch and disruptive. Taylor bouncing back was a joke, like an elaborate excuse for his inability get any push. But Carter was the type that could play LB. At SF he was, I hope he hasn't lost a step. Haynesworth isn't a nose tackle but may be the best suited from the skins. Griffin and Daniels would be strong enough but 3-4 tackle may need more quickness and mobility.

Sounds like a tall tale but, I was kind of a H.S. Orakpo who played 3-4 tackle. Drawing a lot of double and triple teams due to quickness and the offensive scheme rather than any fear or awe. Basically where we lined up meant nothing as to were we would be after the snap. Snag a TE or C,G drawing at least 1, maybe 2 into a huddle. Hopefully pushing the huddle into the backfield. LB's free to rack up 15+ tackles. Pretty effective considering how bad our team could have been.

I'm more pragmatic and would hope for a return of the Hogs. We have a stout version of Barry Sanders. But they dominated with a skinny full back named Riggins, sucking on oxygen after every play.

But I would love to have Vick. Wouldn't want to get in a bidding war. But in the very least look at the O-line right now. Samuels and Thomas both out recovering serious surgery. Mike Williams at 450 or what ever. Play today and Campbell's out for the year on the first snap. At that point Vick scrambling for the rushing title could be really cool. Having tarnished his Atlanta stardom, VT fans may flock in droves to pay $50 parking.

My point of view is that jason campbell should run, not walk away from these disfunctional clowns we call a front office at the end of the year. He has shown nothing but class, character, team first leader and gets his legs cut out from under him every chance these bozo's get.... I believe that he has what it takes to succeed in this league if put in the right situation. Unfortunatly for him success and the redskins front office as it now stands is a pipe dream. These guys show what they are made of just by examning that so-called radio show that Vinny did last year. Remember it started after the season strated after they unexpectedly won some big games and they just couldn't wait to say "i told you so" , let's do a radio show to show all how smart we are. Then when they lose some games and that dink Cerato knew he was going to get blasted, he was a no show a few times, scheduling conflicts , blah, blah, blah. Unprofessional would be putting it kind to these guys, clownish would be a better desciption. As a diehard skins fan it pains me to say that we will never be more then mediocre under a less then mediocre front office until synder gets rid of vinny and hires a true football GM and then stay the hell out of his way. Of course, no real football GM/coach with his any real skills/resume will want to work or coach for a guy who only wants a lap dog to keep playing fantasy football. Don't believe me, what was the first thing Marty did when he become pres of football operations. He fired vinny and nobody lined up to hire him, did they. Unless synder does hire a real GM and stay out of his way, do what I do...root for the players week in, week out but lower your expectations. we will never win a d a m n thing with these two clowns running things. NEVER!

Buffalo couldnt wait to get rid of Dockery. He was WAIVED RELEASED!!! They didnt even think they could get a trade (player) in return for him!
ESPN quote:
Listed at 6-foot-6 and 335 pounds, he started all 32 games in Buffalo and was part of one of the NFL's largest offensive lines in terms of height and weight. But the line struggled last season, allowing 38 sacks, 12 more than the previous team, and the offense finished 25th in the NFL in total yards.

Dockery should fit in great with another Offensive line that allowed 38 sacks..

Favre, Vick - let's bring Sonny out of retirement as long as we're talking about things that stand a low probability of happening. I do think the "Dan" has eyes on trading Campbell. He sounds like the guy who has a burr in his saddle and he cannot rest until he gets rid of it. I'm thinking a deal is in the works. I think Dan and Vinny finally figured out how to keep it quiet. They'll make sure they have the players they think they have this weekend and then next week they will probably pull the trigger. I don't think it will be Brady Quinn, but wouldn't be a bit surprised if there were a straight up trade with some other team for a QB sitting number two on their depth chart. If the do it - and I don't think they should - Kellen Clemens makes a lot of sense. The Redskins have a history of trades with the Jets, Clemens has started a few games, and with Sanchez on their roster, they probably don't view Clemens as holding much value.

How dare you mention Vick and Favre in the same headline! What's wrong with you?

Why do people think that Favre should give up what he loves more than anything, particularly when someone's willing to pay him A LOT OF MONEY to play, based on what? The drama the media gins up about him at every possible opportunity? I didn't hear them going nuts when Lance Armstrong, Reggie White, Magic Johnson, or anyone else unretired. It's an absurd ratings-based soap opera. Give me a break.

I think, if Favre does play at Minnesota, they have to really make that a two QB team, and let Peterson play A LOT and learn from Favre. Even Favre admitted his arm gave out at the end of the season last year, for the first time in his career. So Favre has to get over this need to play every game, every play, or I don't think he will be an asset. This could be good for the Vikings on several levels if they do it right.

I'll tell ya one thing though, I am NOT wearing a damn Vikings t-shirt. NO WAY! I don't care if Favre tatoos a Viking logo on his forehead, I can't follow him to that dark place. I'll root for Favre, enjoy watching him play, and hope his team does better well, but I can't commit the sacrilege of wearing Vikings gear.

Finally, the Packers just need to SHUT UP ABOUT IT! They ran Favre out of Green Bay with torches and pitch forks. The "I don't want you, but no one else can have you," argument doesn't exactly give them any moral high ground IMO.
