Wow - Todd Pinkston Signed

Okay, some will look at this as a move of utter desperation, and I can't say I would argue with them. Skins sign Todd Pinkston, who most assumed was out of football for good after no one picked him up last season (cut by Eagles and then also Vikings after brief stint in Minn.). Todd took a lot of abuse for having "alligator arms" and his run ins with The Grim Reaper were well documented.

Some people would say the Redskins have no legit No. 2 WR - again, no argument here - and with the wide receiver out with shin splints (not sure if he'll be practicing today or not) and no one not named Moss showing much Saturday, it can't hurt to look at other people.

This is now the second vet. WR the Skins have brought in in the last few weeks - Corey Bradford - is the other, and even they seem to be admitting that despite all the millions in signing bonus $$$ spent at this position, a need exists. Still, I kinda thought Pinkston was done.

The Skins also signed DT Matthias Askew - a 4th round pick by the Bengals in 2004 who was waived last year - and cut WR Kyle Brown and DT Vaka Manupuna.

stinkston huh, well he used to light up our secondary for some reason, so hey, why not... is any other team grasping at straws like we are?

Askew that could be interesting....

Skins weren't going to kill people with their passing game anyway. What this signing may evidence is that the WR is suffering from more than shin splints.

I'm reposting this from the last thread.

Woody Austin on Tiger Woods: "It just happens that he scored better. You can't throw away that many opportunities when you are trying to win a big golf tournament. He took advantage; I didn't. Does that mean he played better than me or he's better than me? I don't agree with that."

Was this dude channeling our own littery genius?

So, the OL stinks this week and the DL did well. How does signing a mediocre WR and trying to trade for an older DT help that situation? Some times I wonder if the Skins F.O. has "Bring Your Kids to Work" day and lets the kids make personnel decisions...

Isn't the name "Stinkston" the name that caused Pasquarelli to hang up on that radio call in show? Something tells me Len might have this story broken in no time (well, post-Jason broken anyway).

Kenard Lang former 1st round draft pick of the Skins is a starting end for the Broncos. Dexter Manley has been out of football for a good long while now.

Posted by: periculum | August 13, 2007 04:20 PM

I wouldn't be surprised to see him get cut. They've got two rookies they really like - Crowder mays start from Day 1 and Jarvis Moss soon thereafter. Plus they have Dumervil from last year. All these young DE's on their team from something they call "draft picks". I'm not too familiar with the term but I think most teams have them.

1. Young inexperienced QB
2. Old aging undertalented DLine
3. Depth at LB
4. Old aging Oline, with little depth behind it
5. and still no compliment to an oft injured Moss

Those are some really big holes!!!! yeah maybe if 97 things fall just right we could sneak into the playoffs but does anybody really think we have a legitimate team to contend? I'm tired of bandaids expensive or not, to maybe sneak into the playoffs again every year, it is way past time to blow this team up(that has been mediocre for many years) and start rebuilding. Keep, Campbelly, Betts, Moss, Cooley, Rabach, Taylor, Landry, Rogers, Golston, Monte, Rocky Mac, and trade or cut everyone else. Stock pile draft picks in the next two years, and compliment with some big signings (2 or 3 each year) of YOUNG talent at corner, DE, and Oline and all of a sudden you have a young team in three years built to contend not just squeak into the playoffs maybe.

redskins.com:

In Philadelphia, Pinkston played three seasons with James Thrash, who likely put in a good word for Pinkston, a former second-round draft pick.

Love the implication that the only POSSIBLE explanation of why the Skins would even think of signing this douche is because one of the "core" guys MUST have vouched for him (even though Fitz has no clue if he did).

Posted by: CMoney | August 13, 2007 5:28 PM | Report abuse

You guys are so freakishly pathetic! That includes you, JLac. They signed a frickin' receiver midway through camp to a minimum deal and you guys act like the sky is falling. Who was the idiot that posted "i can't believe joe gibbs thought the receiver was the answer". Turn in your tv remote right now, you are no longer allowed to view football games, because you did not display the maturity needed to keep you from jumping off the nearest bridge. It's people like you that make it necessary to have the idiot labels on everything you buy! Mike Espy is hobbled, James Thrash is hobbled, Lloyd is hobbled, maybe, just maybe, they signed him to have another body on the field. JLac, if you think this is a desperate move, perhaps you and I should switch jobs! Quit yelling "FIRE" in crowded theatres.

Because the Chiefs had 3 Pro Bowl O linemen (Roaf, Shields, and Wiegmann). With a dominating line, stud RB's (they had Priest, LJ, and Blaylock, plus Tony Gonzalez. Who needs WR's?

They were the highest scoring team WITHOUT a recognizable WR.

Posted by: k Squared | August 13, 2007 5:40 PM | Report abuse

I get the feeling we'll be scouring the waiver wire for the rest of the offseason.

Our lack of depth is beginning to show, not like that's a surprise to anyone not named Gibbs or Snyder.

Posted by: Ed | August 13, 2007 5:46 PM | Report abuse

Will is right that they probably signed Pinkston merely to have an extra body on the field, though his invective against JLac is completely unfair. I think the point Jason was making was, even if they need an extra body on the field, why choose Pinkston? He's no better than a rookie and perhaps worse because he has no upside.

And I still am not ready to declare this an awful receiving core. ARE played well down the stretch last year and the receiver certainly won't be as bad as he was last year. There's no need to call the season off just because of this one signing. They're trying to keep their best players from getting hurt in camp and make it through to the start of the season fresh.

JLa,

Thanks for the continued updates.

You basically took the words right out of my mouth. They have 30 mill in bonuses tied up in their first 3 WR's yet they find themselves reverting to desperate measures. Sad stuff.

If the lack of depth on the lines doesn't scare them into better personnel management, I would hope the desperate search for a WR during the preseason of '07 will...

Oh, and what is wrong with giving a young WR like Espy a shot? I don't understand what Gibbs' problem is. This isn't 1987 anymore. Young players can, and do, contribute in today's NFL. Heck, they basically have to on every good team because of the salary cap.

And one more thing since I didn't get to post on the Gerrard Warren issue. HANG UP THE PHONE. HECK, DON'T EVEN ANSWER THE PHONE IF YOU SEE A DENVER AREA CODE.

I bet we are the first, second, and third team they call when they a) need to make a trade and b) want a good "holy crap, they actually said yes" laugh.

Posted by: Ryan Clark | August 13, 2007 6:11 PM | Report abuse

Idiots! They signed Pinkston for JUST one reason--to lead the league in Todds with Cool Nicknames, as posted previously.

There's:

"TD" Todd Collins
"Too Tall" Todd Wade
"Catch the Ball, I will" Todd Yoda
Todd "May I show you a nice handbag and shoes to go with those arms of yours?" Pinkston

This is a Redskins personnel decision afterall and it's what they do best. Last year they gave up eight draft choices for Duckett. This year we got off easy. So far.

Posted by: Sean | August 14, 2007 8:21 AM | Report abuse

From Wikipedia on Matthias Askew

He was drafted in the 2004 NFL Draft by Cincinnati after leaving college early to declare for the NFL draft. He was projected by many to be a possible first round pick the following year had he stayed in school. The Bengals waived Askew during the 2006 pre-season shortly after he was arrested for resisting arrest earlier in the summer. During the arrest he was tasered. Later he had brought suit against the city of Cincinnati, and charges were dropped.
----

Hopefully he is a player and the Bengals just gave up on him due to this off-field behavior, which turned out to be dropped.

I am from Philly and this guy would show up some days and others be a non-factor. He did get alligator arms and was not the biggest guy on the field but you already have a field stretcher in Moss. If he is indeed your possesion guy, it is going to be a long season in DC...

Posted by: bleedgreen | August 15, 2007 11:23 AM | Report abuse

Pinkston is not as bad as you think. The alligator arms thing is his lowest point. But what everyone fails to remember that he would average like 25 yards per catch. And as someone mentioned before, he would light you guys up when he played you. His biggest asset was his speed.
