Zorn Deal is True

This is from Jason Reid: We've confirmed an ESPN report that Jim Zorn has been hired as the Redskins' new offensive coordinator even though a head coach has not been named. We reported a couple days ago that Zorn was at the top of Jim Fassel's list of potential offensive coordinators and is very highly regarded by Gregg Williams as well.
The hiring of Zorn likely means that associate head coach -- offense Al Saunders is finished with the team. Owner Daniel Snyder and vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato were privately critical of the offense's performance under Saunders the past two seasons. The two were especially concerned, sources said, about the development of young quarterback Jason Campbell, whose progress is the organization's top priority.
UPDATE II: A source with knowledge of the situation said this evening that Saunders has been told to look for work elsewhere and that he does not expect to return to the team in any capacity.
Word of Zorn's hiring comes a day after Joe Gibbs called Redskins assistant coaches to tell them that the search for his replacement is likely to take several more weeks.
"They haven't told us anything [about Zorn]," one Redskins assistant said. "I heard about it on the radio. I have no idea what it means for us."

I know Zorn. Sort of. I took a foundry class with him a few years ago at the University of Minnesota. He was nice. He made a kayaker in a wooshing river. Out of bronze.

"Yup, money certainly has a way of talking. Does anyone else think any other motive is in play? Clusterfu** indeed."

yea that and a promotion into a situation with a talented offense. i have no problems with zorn. and as bad as snyder's looked the past couple days, i don't think he's dumb enough to hire his o-coordinator without talking to his potential head coach(es) first. i think both fassel and williams were well aware of this possibility and gave the ok.

i do think this effectively removes any josh mcdaniels speculation out there. i think fassel's probably the only offensive candidate from here on out.

Jim Zorn has accepted an offer to become offensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins, sources said.

Zorn, 54, has coached quarterbacks for the Seattle Seahawks since 2001. He was previously quarterbacks coach for Detroit from 1998 to 2000.

Zorn's hiring comes as the Redskins continue their search for a head coach.

Zorn reportedly met with Redskins owner Daniel Snyder this week. He returned to Seattle, spoke with the Seahawks about a new deal and decided the Redskins' offer provided his best option. Zorn's deal with Washington is expected to cover three years....

My question is, does this preclude Williams as head coach? Do I still have reason for hope that they are not blowing up the whole team?

Posted by: jaypem | January 25, 2008 6:05 PM | Report abuse

Dan Snyder has truly ruined one of things that used to give me enjoyment. So, thanks for that. If its not Williams as head coach, my friends and I (all lifelong skins fans) are moving on to root for the Browns...until Snyder sells the team.

Posted by: tszcz | January 25, 2008 6:05 PM | Report abuse

If Snyder keeps going down this road, there's going to be a Dan Synder Day celebrated every year in DC. It'll be just like Guy Fawkes Day in England.

Posted by: busterkurosawa | January 25, 2008 6:07 PM | Report abuse

you think Dannyboy is walking into meetings with a briefcase full of money and sliding it across the table while asking..."you sure you don't want to reconsider?"

looks like he matured and stopped overpaying for free agents and moved on to high priced coordinators.

Posted by: kenneth920 | January 25, 2008 6:07 PM | Report abuse

Now that they have hired Zorn (which I understand the Skins have not confirmed) they will hire Fassel....wasn't that the hold up the other day?

I have no problem with Zorn...he is beloved in Seattle....but I do feel bad for Al. Hope this does not mean Fassel is going to be our HC...but I'm willing to bet it does.

Damn you, Daniel Snyder!!!

Posted by: Lisa_R | January 25, 2008 6:08 PM | Report abuse

Read the writing on the wall folks. Fassel is next. Thanks to Gregg Williams for 4 years of solid defense. Dan Snyder you're an idiot. You don't hire an O Coordinator before you hire the head coach.

Posted by: hokiepokster92 | January 25, 2008 6:09 PM | Report abuse

The fact that assistants are hearing this from the press and not from the front office is disgraceful. Vinny has been promoted for less the a week and already deserves to be fired. It's his job to communicate with his staff and the fact that the team hired a new head on the offensive side is something all the offensive coaches deserve to hear from the team, not the radio.

Zorn might end up being a good choice, but the front office continues to show that it is incompetent and lord knows why anyone would want to work for them.

Williams could still get this, it has been reported that he liked Zorn quite a bit.

And he won't necessarily use the west coast offense. He has been under many offensive coaches, let's see how this plays out, I have a feeling we'll still see GW get this.

Why? Why? Why? This scam of an owner we have is ruining everything again. The main mistakes he has made in his ownership tenure is the fact that he botches the coaching situation for this team every single time. When you have a cracked foundation (coaching) to build a team around, no matter how hard you try to leverage against the cap and bring in players you feel will add the most value within their coaching philosophies, you will never succeed. He should have never fired Turner with three games left in the season. ( He had nothing to gain by doing that and should have waited 3 weeks to do it at the end of the season) He should have never fired marty after one season (The team was obviously turning around, finished the season 8-3 and was absolutley heading towards a division championship the following season). He should have never hired that fraud by the name of Spurrier. ( he was a lazy, good-for-nothing amateur of a coach, and on top of that, the worthless players they brought in because "they knew the fun 'n gun" were an embarassment to the sport) Now, he is bringing in Fassel. Why hurt the vested emotions of this fan base and players on the team with this idiotic pick of a new coach that will scramble everything that was built up to this point. Screw you Dan Snyder. I hope they start spitting on your food everytime you go to Morton's in reston.

So far no tools. Good I will keep watch until 8:00.

Thinks to look for. Name you have never seen. Sounds like Larry Micheals. Try to divert from the issue at hand.

Thinks Vinny is well respected in the NFL. Attacks the press.

Posted by: mul | January 25, 2008 6:17 PM | Report abuse

I've never posted before so bear with me . . .

Listening to NFL Radio on Sirius coming home, the consensus of the hosts and the callers is that this is a "sad day for the NFL" because of the ongoing foolishness in DC and in Oakland.

I guess Snyder has reached a new low - or maybe he considers it a high - being mentioned as an Al Davis-type owner. Too bad he didn't aspire to be like the Rooneys or the Maras or . . . just about anybody else.

I really, really had hopes for The Danny when he bought the team - he seemed like a fan who had grown up rooting for the Skins - just like me but with a net worth exponentially greater. His early missteps seemed to come from that fan-inspired enthusiasm. But this . . . to tear apart what Joe Gibbs began to build over the past four years and to start over - ridiculous.

Hopefully, he'll sell the team in my lifetime and we'll have some chance at stability. Or maybe continuity.

GW refuses to be the HC if Saunders is his OC. Therefore, Snyder was forced to choose b/w GW or Saunders so he went with the guy the fans and players were behind: and that is drumroll.......GW soon to be announced as the HC.

Signing the OC before hiring a HC? Hmmm, methinks Danny considers himself the de facto HC and will hire a lackey to do his bidding on the sidelines. If the nominal HC is not a dancing bear, it will be Tom Cruise.

What a joke this once proud NFL franchise has become.

Local NFL fans continue to write checks that Danny's ego continues to cash.

Posted by: rdpinva | January 25, 2008 6:28 PM | Report abuse

It sounded like Saunders was out regardless. I doubt Snyder was forced to get rid of him. My guess is that Snyder tries to get Williams to come around on his demands because now he's sitting there with a new HC who is liked by both Fassel and Williams. Question is who will be the DC if they choose Fassel.

Posted by: mtnskinsfan | January 25, 2008 6:28 PM | Report abuse

Its all a timing thing...but to us on the outside who expect to know everything at all times (myself incl) it appears chaotic. But Snyder and GW know they have all but a deal (hence the 4 interviews/negotiations), but Zorny had to be locked up immediately, b/c he is a hot commodity. Now to add even more excitement to this whole process, Snyder knows to hold off on announcing GW as the HC until another day in the very near future. Its much more exciting to make two big splashes than one on the same day. C'mon, Zorn worked for GW in Buff. This one is falling right into place...must be the mushrooms that are allowing me to see this so clearly.

Way to go Mr. Snyder....and good luck Jason Campbell.

Zorn is in. OK, assume that is true. Zorn would want to know who he is working for. And the guy taking the job would want say in the offensive coordinator. Which makes me think the coach is already determined and its a matter of very little time until that is done. If it isn't already.

Would not surprised that the comments yesterday, that the HC search could last another couple weeks were done to mislead the press/public.

I wouldn't be surprised if Zorn's deal leaked out before Snyder wanted it to.

Who knows in all of this mess with misinformation and disinformation being perpetuated like wildfire, but if I had to guess, I would say that Snyder and co. have soured on Williams because of two reasons:

(i) they want an offensive mind to run the team to ensure that Campbell, the most valuable resource on the team, gets the proper guidance and coaching to take it to the next level

(ii) Williams' inability to get along with Cerrato. That's a pretty silly reason not to hire a head coach if your mind tells you he's the best for the job, but this isn't the first and it won't be the last that tyrants (which Snyder effectively is) lead with their hearts instead of their minds

Posted by: hailbg | January 25, 2008 6:35 PM | Report abuse

Haha, I am not Snyder...in fact I said earlier that his "relationship with Ceratto is disturbing to say the least" Folks, this is so obvious...I'll say it again for those who missed it: Fassel was a backup plan in case Williams couldnt get his guy as OC.

Only a non-athlete wannabe sports guy (Snyder) and/or an arrogant bum (Cerrato)would not be able to see that Saunders had not put his full offensive product on the field yet. He had a young QB and head coach stuck in 1990 (Gibbs) that was meddling with his offensr. Come on, can any of you Redskins nuts out there honestly say that Saunders had a free hand with that offense last year? Give me a break. Now he's gone, he'll be snatched up in week probably by another NFC foe, and you can go back to seeing another young QB Patrick Ramsied by this dysfunctional organziation. Only the Redskins (under Dan the Man Child) could turn the best feel good story of the year - team holds together, finishes 9-7, makes playoffs, head coach in waiting, players and coaches on one sheet of music, etc. Nope we're back to Bruce Smith,Deon Sanders, Mark Carrier, Jeff George. New Offense, the next year a new Defense, then a new Quarterback, then a new Head Coach, then it starts all over again. I really do think that they should give a trophy for off season greatness. Because that is the closest championship we will get to.

Please hire Gregg William so I can stop hating Snyder and Cerrato.

We really are a laughing stock...

I think Zorn is a good hire. I'd rather see Williams as head coach, but remember how bad our defense was last year...maybe fassel won't be a bad move. It doesn't really matter as long as we have a good defensive coordinator. All the HC needs to do is manage the game clock and time outs. Once in a while a decision to go for it would be nice too...all of which Joe Gibbs couldn't do the second time around.

Please, everyone out there who is complaining...tell snyder to keep your tickets. The more people that jump off the deep end gets a real fan closer to the top of the ticket waiting list. Whoever doesn't want their tickets, please get the H@@@ out of fedex!!! especially if you are one of those that sit on their hands the entire time and complain about people who dare to cheer for our team, or sell tickets to our rival fans. HAIL REDSKINS!!!!

They said it is exactly what we already knew, both Fassel and Williams are fine with Zorn and if we wanted Zorn before Seattle locked him up we had to move quick. It does kill my McDaniel dream but for the coach that Snyder is hiring (no candidate is the big name total control guy) this isn't a big deal......and the Cowboys hired Garrett before the hired Wade and that seemed to work fine. I for one am happy with this move and now would be fine if Williams is promoted because now we have a QB guy to work with JC, now I agree with all the shabingus, lets just promote GG and move on.

Ever heard of the Peter Principle. That executives rise to their level of incompetence. Applies just as much to NFL (or even college) football coaches. Remember Jack Pardee? Norv Turner's a classic case; great offensive coach, but still has a losing record as a HC and was unable to take San Diego's 14-2 team any higher this year.

Unfortunately, that also may be the label that goes best with GG. A great defensive coordinator whereever he's been, but only so-so any higher. He certainly was not a great improvement with the Bills as the top guy.

All that means is that Snyder will be slightly more cautious that he's exhausted every other viable possibility before making a final decision to elevate Williams--no matter how popular GG is with the troops.

Zorn never coached under Williams. He has been in Detroit and Seattle as QB coach.

Posted by: cdubb | January 25, 2008 6:42 PM | Report abuse

I'd like to think that Snyder went through this Kabuki dance in order to pick the brains of other coaches or applicants.

I.e., he was always going to hire Williams; but used the process to get an idea as to how the current team stood in the eyes of outsiders.

That, to me, is the only logical explanation. He can't be this big of a klutz.

Thank you!!!! like we as a bunch of fans really have any idea who the best people are anyway, whoever it is, if he wins we'll love him regardless of all the crap that is said now, and we'll hate him if he loses, even if it is the suddenly sainted Williams. And regardless, no matter how much class Snyder showed through the Taylor thing, and the money he has thrown out to try and make this team a winner year after year everyone on here will hate him until SBs are won regardless of the fact that championships aren't easy and at least he tries, I'd rather have Snyder any day of Al Davis, the owners of the Niners, Bungles, Browns, Cards, Lions, and a few others, he may screw up but at least he cares and tries.

Reading between the lines...

Of course nobody knows what the ultimate decision is being made on the new Head Coach and I'm sure we all appreciate Jason's effort on this process. Now that it's starting to come out though, I really feel like they brought Fassil in for information more than anything. I think they value his opinion and wanted to feel him out as far as what offensive and defensive minds in the league he would want if he had his wishlist and gave them reasons A, B, and C for each. Think about it... if the reports are true that Jim Fassil felt minipulated durring this process and we've hired HIS boy Zorn then it makes sense that Dan and Vinny, unhappy with Saunders predictable formations and personell packages wanted a fresh offense and Zorn could be their diamond in the rough. I think they wanted Gregg Williams from the beginning assuming he would not demand personell and would be willing to change Offensive Cordinators. They may very well talk to more candidates until after the superbowl but I still think Williams is the guy. Snyder, who genuinly loves Joe Gibbs would want to continue what Joe built and see it through even if he's apprehensive because he knows Joe Gibbs would get alot of the credit for turning it around. If I'm way off base in the feeling that williams is the guy... maybe Shwartz comes back into the picture as someone who can basicly take over the same style of defense with the cordinator they want already in place a-la Jerry Jones ( Danny's American Idol )

Hail...

Sheesh.

Now JC and the O have to learn a whole new playbook.

Hire Williams NOW.

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | January 25, 2008 6:50 PM | Report abuse

this owner is playing a dangerous game. Zorn is unproven. Saunders offense works.

I can see the argument for getting rid of Al, that JC isn't a good fit, etc. Not sure I agree so completely, though.

Campbell played behind makeshift line and was barely in season 2. His guys dropped a lot of passes (they cost us wins at GB and Dallas). Todd had healthy WRs and did very well. Portis didn't show up til the last part of the year. While clearly the offense was the weaker side of the ball. I'm not sure that it was all on Al. I think Gibbs held that offense back more than anyone. And I was OK with Campbell's development. Still a work in progress, but there was clearly good progress.

I can see replacing Al, but I'm not thrilled by it.

These goofs have gone and fired one of the best offensive minds in football after less than two years. Dan and Vinny, you both blow!!!

Posted by: lucy1001 | January 25, 2008 06:36 PM

don't agree with all of it, but agree that Saunders is a top offensive mind and he didn't have free reign in the offense. In part because Campbell is still so young, in part because Gibbs was wanted to run out the clock as soon as the 3rd quarter started.

This isn't necessarily a BAD thing people, Zorn is a bright guy, I wouldn't count on what type of offense he's going to bring in, most likely a conglomeration of the many offenses he has coached under(which is many very different ones) and Hasslebeck credits him with his major improvements over the last couple of years. I still have my hopes that this is still Willimas' job, and Zorn is smart enough to keep things simple offensively while JC and company grow into it.

I'm trying to be excited people, and as I have said here several times already "NOTHING IS DECIDED YET", we need to chill.

Lol.....all the sell sell sell, hate hate hate, will turn into tickets, jerseys, beers, and crappy johnny rockets food next season and Danny will keep on rolling. Its funny that people really think that just shouting on this blog is constructive, I for am getting really tired of it, I don't agree with everything the owner does, or even most of it, I haven't liked most of the decisions or coaching the last four years, but fricking calm down and wait and see, nobody knows how this will play out and nobody will care if the guy wins. So collectively shut up! and lets just see what happens week 1 next year, the fact that anybody really thinks GG is the surefire has to be choice is ridiculous, and to demand continuity with this staff is almost pitiful. What is important is roster continuity, the hire needs to be someone who is happy with the roster, and you know what, that's why Snyder isn't giving the "total control" thing to a coach cause he did it with Marty and Spurrier and we ended up with a totally disjointed team that had no identity or idea what it was. Now we have a roster that is built strong and is talented, just needs the right signal callers...

Isn't the west coast totally different than Gibb's Power Run offense?

Posted by: Down777866 | January 25, 2008 7:01 PM | Report abuse

Let's see...

#1 need for a QB in West Coast Offense - quick timing / accurate / short passes

#1 weakness area for Jason Campbell - not having a quick release & not being accurate on short passes

#1 need in a WR for West Coast offense - size & ability to make yards after catch and be physical

Redskins 2 WRs...2 midgets with speed

Yeah...might as well turn the roster over now.

2) team revolt after said couple years

3) Campbell turning into the next Ramsey

4) Snyder makes another billion off of us fans

5) we get to rebuild again in 2010!

6) Snyder hires the guy who fills the Gatorade jugs for the Patriots (after all he is a part of a proven winner).

7) cycle repeats over again.

Haven't we gotten used to this scenario by now? Its been this way since the Squire passed away. I blame JK Cook.

I agree.

Al Saunders is an awesome coach and he will not have a problem finding a job.

He never had the talent here(average o-line, n00b QB, soft running back, always hurt WR's) and people should be willing to admit on here that Gibbs had his hand up his arse with play calling. Collins getting a chance to start showed what his offense could really do.

The funny thing is it WILL come back and bite the Redskins in the butt, I'm willing to bet on that.

Look at it this way Al, you're better off anywhere else then you were here. Sorry you had to come to such a disfunct organization, you're too good for that.

I think the HC job is settled and we just don't know who it is.

Snyder didn't pull Zorn out of Seattle without Zorn KNOWING who he would be working for. Either that, or Zorn is a fool ... and I sort of doubt that.

Stitching rumors together, always a dubious thing to do, leads me to Fassel. If it was GG, he would want to interview Zorn. But we have heard nothing of the sort. It'd be pretty easy for Fassel to interview Zorn outside of Redskins Park, may even have happened a week ago. Plus it seems, again from rumors, that Zorn is Fassel's guy. That Zorn and Fassel have history together also makes it more likely that less interviewing was needed.

Not saying it coudn't be GG and I'm connecting some pretty weakly supported dots, but this points towards Fassel.

I can live with Zorn although this guy is Seahawk though and through. I suspect his family is probably hating his guts right now. But what the heck, take Snyder's money and run. It is always better to go home to Seattle rich.

As for Zorn's resume. How about that stint in Detroit. Batch turned out great, eh?

As for HC, I would rather have a baboon than Fassel. If Fassel becomes HC, I am done as a skins fan until he is gone.

Do the cool aid drinkers really think a Fassel lead team is going have sustained success against Dallas, New York, and Philly?

Can Gregg Williams do it? I don't know but I am sure as heck Fassel can't unless the team has a lot more talent than it has now - talent that takes years and luck to obtain. If that were to occur, a baboon as HC would be good enough.

Head Coaches hire Offensive Coordinators
Unless you are Jerry Jones or now Daniel Snyder. I guess we all know now who the real coach is gonna be.

What happens to Don Breaux, the current offensive coordinator? Everyone is talking about Saunders, but what about poor ol' Donny?

Posted by: gliddenc | January 25, 2008 7:18 PM | Report abuse

I think the Zorn move is a good one. Sure, Al has a good mind for offense and didn't have free reign here, but I think trying out someone new for JC's development isn't a bad idea. If it doesn't pay off, you can rest assured that Bill Cowher will be here next year to clean house.

Whoever teased about his work with Detroit... Charlie Batch is by far the best back-up QB in the NFL. There are few others I would trust to step in for the main man in a pinch than him. And Detroit, while craptastic, has had prolific passing for years (just no O-Line). Don't forget, Zorn has also worked to sculpt John Elway and Phil Simms.

I think the Zorn hire indicates that they have our HC picked and are waiting to get the pins lined up across the board. I can't see Fassel at HC and GW at DC still, but who knows (I hope manboobs gets the nod). Hopefully, whatever the case is, we'll prevail next year.

HAIL.

Not sure what level of support Saunders had from the players, but it didn't seem to be the same as GG did.

I'll admit I'm mixed on this one. Saunders has a great offensive track record and we saw what Todd did with it. Saunders had a disaster on the right side of the line and a very young QB. So it was challenging for certain. Add in Moss dropping passes and Portis not showing up for a big chunk of the year. Overall, Saunders did a good, not great, job. Also, I have no idea how much Gibbs might have done to hold this back.

I'd have leaned towards keeping Saunders, but there are a lot of unknowns. One of the biggest, was Al really trying to adapt the offense to JC as much as he could.

Also, that side of the ball had too many coaches. Gibbs is more offense, plus Breaux and Buges have been around forever. My guess is that Breaux and Buges are also gone

Now that they've hired Zorn maybe they'll interview Williams for a fifth and maybe a sixth time. You have to be sure about these things. Maybe Snyder won't be able to make up his mind and Williams and Fossil will be the first co-hc in league history.

Posted by: josettes | January 25, 2008 06:50 PM

This is funny because it sound so plausible!!! I could definitely imagine Dan finding a way to hire co-hc's :(

Williams: Co-HC Defense
Fassel: Co-HC Offense
Vinny: Supreme Allied Director of HCs

Unfortunately, that also may be the label that goes best with GG. A great defensive coordinator whereever he's been, but only so-so any higher. He certainly was not a great improvement with the Bills as the top guy.

All that means is that Snyder will be slightly more cautious that he's exhausted every other viable possibility before making a final decision to elevate Williams--no matter how popular GG is with the troops.

I think the HC job is settled and we just don't know who it is.

Snyder didn't pull Zorn out of Seattle without Zorn KNOWING who he would be working for. Either that, or Zorn is a fool ... and I sort of doubt that.

zcezcest1,

This is the true question at hand. If the Redskins don't announce very soon, then they have not decided. They have no reason to sit on the final decision.

Considering its Friday going into Super Bowl week, I think you're dead wrong. I believe they are piecing this crap together and they threw out the only 'good' news they had.

If Zorn signed without knowing, he's a complete fool.

Stay tuned.

So, Jim Zorn has had several hours to deny the story that there is a deal in place. Looks like after flinging multiple strands of spaghetti against the wall, the sports reporters appear to have gotten one to stick. That's got to make 'em proud. By my count 5 false alarms to 1 apparently actual story. With accuracy like that, they could become weather reporters.

The same way I feel about nearly everything he writes.

But I love that guys like Puff Daddy believe are so gullible that they believe every last word that the beat reporter tells them, no matter how many times the things he has said have turned out to be wrong.

The Beat Reporter could come on here this very moment and post a thread stating he just heard from a "source" that Tommy Lasorda has become a candidate for the Redskins head coaching spot, and I absolutely ***guarantee*** there would be dozens--if not more--of folks on here slamming the Redskins for looking at former coaches from another sport...all because the Beat Reporter had a "source" he claims told him so...

gdennie -- totally agree with your post. No need for Skins mgmt to sit on anything at this point. If Zorn's did this w/o knowing who the coach will be, he is a fool.

If you want a sign pointing towards GG being named as coach, I think its this. Will Zorn call the plays? With Fassel, that is less likely. With GG, Zorn almost certainly calls the game.

That make this a much bigger step for Zorn.

And it took 2 incredible winning streaks to reach the playoffs. I am still hoping that GW gets the nod but I am trying to give the Danny and the boys the benefit of the doubt here. for all any of us knows, zorn could be a diamond in the rough. but doesnt bringing in a new oc contradict the continuity approach. cambell made strides last year in his second year of the same offense for the first time since he was a prep in mississippi. the mistake that dan made was to give the fans false hope about continuity. he wouldnt be doing his job if he didnt have a complete and exhaustive coach search, but why lie in the first place. that being said, as a longtime backer of snyder on this blog, im done. he has embarrased the franchise and himself. he needs to step back and stick to what he is good at, wining and dining free agents and giving them money.

...and a team that a guy with 3 SB rings said he really thought was going to the SB this year. Look, the Gints are in it! The same Gints the Skins took apart late in the season. So Gibbs may have actually seen this team had what it took.

A lot of things went wrong for the Skins this year, no need to recount them all. This team requires tweeking, not an overhaul.

Posted by: Alan4 | January 25, 2008 7:45 PM | Report abuse

Gibbs 2 was a double edged sword. But what he did accomplish other than 2 playoff appearances? He restored respect to the team. That counts a lot in this league. Because that is what attracts players who like to win. He left the team in good shape.

My own opinion. If Gibbs on the sidelines was a sharp as he was in Gibbs 1.0, this team wins 11-12 games, not 9. Which means there is considerable upside just from improved game day coaching.

Gibbs was a great leader and did have the team prepared. The upside in keeping this thing together seemed obvious to me. But hey, I haven't spent billions and gone thru 5 coaches in 8 years, so what do I know ...

You are missing the point. I am not saying Gibbs should have been fired. And I am convinced that the only coach in history that could have rallied this team through all the devastation is Gibbs. And I certainly wish Gibbs/Saunders/Williams had one more season to see if they could make it all work. But the reality of the situation is we still went 31-36 and without Gibbs for us to believe in, Snyder has no choice but to change personnel. Do you think Buges, Breaux, etc would be the same without Gibbs? And we all know Gibbs did not totaly subscribe to what Saunders brought to the table. Finally, Williams is a very different coach than Gibbs. Period. And even if he is named HC things will still be different. Let's just see how it al plays out

My comment about Charlie Batch and the HOF (he's not really up for consideration) was supposed to be a little droll humor, for the benefit of those who think Batch's success under the tutelage of Zorn in Detroit (and/or since) proves Zorn's bona fides as an offensive wiz.

Frankly, I hope Zorn is the second coming of Bill Walsh, and the perfect guru for JCAM, but excuse me for asking a question and not swallowing the kool aid just yet.

Saunders at least turned Trent Green into a 4,000 yard passer in the NFL, and I would have liked to have seen what Al could have done with the keys to all the controls, after two years teaching his system to the offense.

That said, I was not all that happy with the offense the last two years either (who is?). So if Williams ends up as HC, I will be relieved (if troubled by the effect of the OC change on Campbell), and will hope that Zorn is an improvement over what we have had.

I don't trust much of anything that Jason La Canfora says about the Skins. He doesn't like the Skins, he hates Snyder, and he doesn't like reporting on the Skins (which we know because he complains about having to do it). But... if what he says is true about both Zorn being liked by both Williams and Fassel, then I think what the Skins are saying--that the door isn't closed to either Williams or Fassel, is probably true. I would rather that Snyder just get on with it and hire Williams. But maybe Snyder wants to talk to Spagnuola first to see if he'd rather work with him. I don't think it's right to keep Williams waiting, but he can't go anywhere without the Redskins' permission, so he'll still be there after the Super Bowl. I don't think Spagnuola would be a bad choice either, though. Just not Fassel; please not Fassel.

does this necesarily preclude the pats oc. havent we seen the past couplke years that the skins dont think that too many cooks can ruin the meal. their m.o. the past few years on both sides of the ball has been to collect as many good coaches, most were former coordinators, as possible. i can see them making a play for both the superbowl coaches they want and give them some fancy 8 word title. after the last few weeks anything is possible no?

"Why would he interview Williams four times?"

I heard a few things on this and I thought I would point it out here. All these "interviews" were not actually interviews, one of NFL Radio's guys said that one of his sources told him that at least 2 of these meetings were nothing more than lunch and they barely talked about the HC job at all. And remember the early reports that that The Danny's interviews were these long 10, 12, 14 hr marathons? Schwartz didn't get one of those, neither did Meeks, according to them. And did Fassel interview 2 or 3 times? It's been reported both ways. I guess my point is simple, we need to wait and see what ACTUALLY happens before we criticize(or more accurately, launch an all out assault on) how big a mistake this all is. Remember that Lombardi was the Packers' 4th choice as coach way back when. We want wins right? Well, we havne't lost any games with the new staff coming in so let's just chill and let it all play out.

zcezcest1 says,"Not sure what level of support Saunders had from the players, but it didn't seem to be the same as GG did."

I think all the "player" support was from La Canfora, Wise, Boswell and Reid. Most players are too smart to campaign for a coach at the risk of alienating the one who actually gets the job. I think the Post's sportswriters would have preferred Williams and kept writing about the "players" support.
It doesn't matter at this point, anyway. The mess has been made and it will take years to clean it up!

The only way snyder can retain even the thinnest shred of dignity is if he makes Williams the coach and kisses his arse for all to see. And then it'll still be up in the air.
If Williams is not the coach, then after 33 years, I will search for another team for which to root -- and spend money. And I have a LOT of friends who feel the same way.
And we will take perverse but remorseless glee in watching snyder's toy fail to operate year after year after year.
What a shame. What a waste. What a completely clueless jerk.

It seems logical that da Snyder has a plan. Any businessman worth his salt (and don't tell me Danny isn't one, cuz he is) knows what sort of PR catastrophe this has been.

Coaches and players left in the dark. Interview after interview with no results. Rampant speculation fueled by paranoia. Coaches close to signing, withdrawing, blocked by lateral moves, coming back and signing, etc. Fassel, ostensibly the front-runner, booed vociferously and pointedly by Redkins fans everywhere, a virtual boo through the Intertubes, if you will...

It takes someone with smugness in abundance to ignore that unless he has a plan. That logic dictates Williams being the head coach after all. Either that, or Snyder is just so arrogant and isolated from public opinion, that he doesn't give a rat's as*. If that's the case, then he should be in no position to run a football team.

I truly believe that Snyder *thinks* his heart is in the right place; but I also believe that his ego is so big that he thinks he can ignore public opinion because if the Redskins win again, then hey, everyone loves Snyder again.

What has become increasingly and alarmingly clear as this farce has progressed is that if the Redskins win, a big if at this point to be sure, it will be despite Snyder and not because of him

BTW, no one should bother defending Steve Czaban. I've heard enough racist/homophobic/xenophobic innuendo from that guy over the course of several years on WTEM to write him off for good.

"The next HC is GW my friends", said John McCain, guaranteed. Zornhole leaked, that is why GW was not announced yet.

So in the end, all/most of you will get your wish.

But honestly, I echo earlier sentiments that this rediculous push for continuity is ummmm, rediculous. We all love Gibbs the man, but as a coach, as we learned in his 2nd tenure, he simply was a big piece of a very big puzzle.

Posted by: jimmyhendrix | January 25, 2008 08:06 PM

Snyder is emulating is 'idol', Jerry, by hiring an OC first. Jones did the same thing with Garrett last year.

It's nothing but a power play/p. envy...call it what you will.

It also puts the unknown HC in his place before he's even hired.

Without arguement, Zorn will answer to Snyder every day he is in Ashburn. The HC is partially emasculated before he ever reaches Dulles.

Matetyahu,
I understand where you're coming from, and were I not a hiring manager, I would agree. Part of my job is to hire new people, and given that we are a small team, one screw up is really bad.

Remember, that early in the process, the press correctly pointed out that this hire has implications 5-7 years down the road. I believe that in this case, the press was correct.

While GW is the sentimental, crowd favorite, that does not necessarily make him the right choice. Just like a hiring manager (NFL Team Owner) can be wrong, so can the fans. The difference is, that we as fans aren't on the hook financially, should the choice not pan out.

Bottom line, it's really easy to pick players and coaches when it's someone else's $1.5B on the line. You willing to bet your $1.5B on Williams?

I love the guy, but high powered offenses don't work unless you can convince high caliber players to work for minimum wage for a chance at a Superbowl.....ala.....the Patriots. OK, Danny the offense is set, you have a championship defense already in place, with one of the best defensive coordinators alive. Now just buy some o-linemen and a coordinator that knows what year it is and name Gregg Williams coach. I wish I could be as stupid with my money as Danny is and still make millions...or billions. Oh LarryBud, you are so cute when you are delusional.

Why is again that they needed a smokescreen?

GG is under contract. You were interviewing Zorn for a promotion, not a lateral move. No smokescreen necessary.

I was with the optimistic at the beginning. "It has to look like a real process so they can't just name GG" etc.

Well the Rooney rule was satisfied (as lamely as it always is) and the time for any possible subterfuge was over.

You Pat's assistants are coming here? Nope. We already gave out the only promotion we had to give to Zorn, the rest would not be allowed to move.

DC?

Well, if GG hired Jerry Gray to be his DC in Buffalo, and hired him here when his contract was up in Buffalo, why would he not want him as his DC here?

No, the time for optimism is over. Could GG still be named? Sure, never say never with VinnyDAN, but it would not be the result of a master smokescreen created by VinnyDAN.

Another way to build on the foundation:

The two playoff losses the Redskins have had, in 2005 and 2007, have been to the Seahawks. If we're going to make a Super Bowl run next season, we'll probably encounter the Seahawks on the way to that again, the way the brackets go -- so why NOT hire their OC away?

Pro players are paid a lot of money to study playbooks and make plays. In this day and age of 25-35% roster turnover, the last thing you want is a 700 page playbook anyhow. Simplicity and execution are the operative words.

Once again ..my fellow Skins fans posts messages here making Skins Nation look like a bunch of whining babaies with no football knowledge at all....SO another move is made for the Redskins and nothing has changed...NO MATTER WHAT THE TEAM DOES TO IMPROVE ITDELF OR DO WHAT IT MUST>>>MOST SKINS FANS BI T CH AND COMPLAIN AND ARE NEVER HAPPY....Zorn is a very nice choice as OC. Teams have tried to get Zorn from Seattle for a few years now...

Bottom line is this...Most fans have this mirage that this team was good ...when in fact this team was consistantly having midseason meltdowns for four straight years...had to win games in desperation to get into the playoffs twice...The offense under Saunders was TERRIBLE!

And Shame on most posters in here...all I read for two years in here was HOW BAD SAUNDERS WAS AND NEEDED TO GO! Now you say the opposite..You guys now think it's a bad move to get rid of Saunders...GEE what a surprise..

Most fans in here are holding on to a coaching staff that really in you look at the Facts...did not have great success,,,

What consistency are you guys holding on to? Mid season melt downs? Turnovers? A defense with good stats but caved constantly and let teams comeback and win afetr buliding a lead over and over agaion...including the last game agaisnt the Hawks where they let seattle march right down the field and take the lead back...

I'm sorry but I just don't see what most of you are sating was so great...I see an average team at best and WE NEED NEW BLOOD BEFORE THSES PLAYERS ARE PAST THEIR PRIME

HAIL!

I read the article where Mayor Fenty spoke of having the Redskins return to DC, possibly on the same site where RFK is right now.

In a perfect world, they'd just go back to RFK (of course, I know this would never happen, because Danny couldn't make as much $$$$ at old RFK).

But at least we had home-field advantage there.

Playing at FedEx is like playing at a neutral site; our record their blows.

I've been a die-hard Skins fan all my life. This is an all-time low. I am seriously looking for a new team to root for. I wish I could be a Patriot fan, but I can't stand Belichick. It sucks having the worst owner in the league. He lucked his way into making a fortune. That's obvious because he clearly doesn't know how to run an organization. He has no people skills. I don't know that Greggggggggggg Williams is necessarily the answer, but he's certainly better than Fassel. Who hires a coordinator before hiring a head coach?? Snyder is an idiot and we're going to continue to be the joke of the league until Snyder is gone. He and I are the same age. So I'm probably not going to see things get better in my lifetime.

And of course everyone will still be whining about something...the media (news/print) has done a poor job reporting on this whole story, never offering any of the myraid of possibilities (coaching combos) and as a result everyone has been in a pathetic state of paranoia.

I am very happy that Zorn is on board, almost so much that I am not quite as concerned about the head coach decision. My fear was that Fassell is the new head coach and hires a bunch of losers for his staff. As long as Zorn is on the staff we have a great start.

Having said that, I hope Williams is the new head coach. Saunders offense was not going to work here. We give Zorn 1 season with Campbell and if he is not "restaurant quality" we draft a QB or sign a strong veteran for 2009.

Dallas, among others. They went with Jason Garrett ahead of Wade Phillips. It worked out okay.

You'll find that giving up the Redskins is harder than giving up heroin, smoking, and alcohol -- all in the same week. Don't even try.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | January 25, 2008 9:36 PM | Report abuse

Snyder's best financial choice is Williams (assuming that Cowher isn't available). By far.

Williams is wanted by the current players. Getting guys to play for a coach is a big deal. And when you go after FAs, there is no better endorsement than the current players play hard for the coach. Williams gets you better FA choices for less $$. When was the last time a guy took less $$ to play in DC? Well, that could occur if GG is hired. But not for Fassel or any other coach.

Also, GG isn't that expensive. But the biggest factor is this. GG will keep the fans.

If you screw GG after this emotional season, you are also telling Joe Gibbs, the most admired Redskin leader ever, that you don't respect him. That will turn a lot of fans off. We've seen it on this board.

Now some of the fans may mean it, some may not and some may be confused. But in my life, the easiest situations for me to turn away from emotionally are when I felt disrespected. This feels a lot like that. Disrespect Joe Gibbs and what this team did after Sean Taylor died, I'll probably tune out.

I go back with this team 40 years. And while I may not be able to remember where my car keys are, I can recall a lot of Skins history -- way more than any of you might want to know.

Those who say good riddance to loyal fans, don't be so hasty. Look at what Al Davis did to the Raiders. The Raiders fan base was among the most loyal in the entire league. Davis destroyed it over the years. A sell out in Oakland is rare and its a small stadium. And you don't even have to deal with $35 parking and traffic jams -- BART (their Metro) takes you to the friggin' door. Davis is 78. Danny could be doing this for another 40 years ....

FedEx has lots of seats to fill. I think Danny has trouble filling all the suites even now. The tix waiting list got a lot bigger when Joe Gibbs came back, so they added seats. Gibbs is gone but the seats remain.

Gibbs legacy is still in place. Get rid of that and a lot of fans will go away. Get rid of it and field a losing team, and Danny's waiting list for season tix disappears. Its a two step process. If people know they can get tix for any game they want at face value, it diminishes the value of season tix. So the wait list drops.

If tix can be bought on a walk up basis without season tix, the value of the team drops like a rock. How many people wouldn't love to stop paying big $$ for those preseason games? A lot.

By that measure GG, is the best financial choice. Because he will get more renewals than any other coaching choice.

Further, if GG screws up as coach, Danny is free to blow it up with the fans on his side. And Danny will be respected since he showed respect to GG. Which keeps options like Cowher open.

Screw over GG for no good reason and no top coach will ever come here. Just like no top coach goes to SF with the Yorks or Oakland for Al Davis. Snyder risks getting himself into that territory.

Business smart is really about respect. Joe Gibbs was respected to the point he could make lots of mistakes and people would still support him. It did pay off some and could pay off a lot more if the Redskins ownership decides it can live with Gibbs legacy in the person of GG.

GG is the best business choice Danny can make.

I think part of the problem implementing Saunder's offense - and this is just a complete guess - was its complexity and, with that, key injuries would easily disrupt the entire system. Too many things had to go right and too few things had to go wrong. Small margin of error.

In other words, it's not a system that had interchangeable parts.

I think, among other things, it's not the ideal system for a learning/young QB to handle.

It's gonna be Williams. The next move is finding a new defensive coordinator.

1) why do you think Williams was one of the first big hires HOF Coach Gibbs went after when he un-retired? ...and has remained steadily employed in the NFL since 1990, including 7 years as HC or Associate HC?

2) why do you think JF hasn't been able to sniff a HC position since he went 4-12 with the NY Giants? ... and hasn't even been able been able to hold on to an OC job since he was fired in Oct 06?

Are all the other team owners just that dumb?? Since Fassel coached a SB (as some are quick to point out), he would seem to be a 1st choice for all those teams that had vacancies... hmmmmm

Let's see, Zorn is "highly regarded" by GW. Jim Schwartz was an assistant under GW and, feasibly, still has a good relationship with him. Please, OH PLEASE!!! Snyder, Cerrato there's a big, absolutely BAD A$$ group of folks that are gonna be knockin' at your door if you screw this up...they're know as Redskins FANS and they've got a big ol' can of WHOOP A$$ that they're just itchin' to open up on you two. leevi, Fassel does have a better HC record than GG. But that is not the issue. GG won for Danny. In a very tough situation. Danny hired him and signed the players that strongly support GG.

Respect is more than half the game. GG has it, Fassel doesn't. As a player, you want to respect the mgmt above you. Coach, GM, onwer.

Blowing off GG would harm the reputation of the Skins. Which is a huge problem.

But the real problem Leevi --is that you see an average team at best. This team had the roughest season of any pro team I can recall. Key injuries, tough losses, tough schedule and Sean Taylor. And still they made the playoffs. 2007 was many things. Average was not one of them

talent -- Dallas did hire Garrett before Phillips. But its pretty rare to do that. Garrett was essentially family so its not like he came out of left field. Parcells left Dallas well stocked. Ware, Romo, TO, etc.

Zorn has no connection to Danny.

Just because the media got the Zorn hire first, doesn't mean that is the way the hiring went. I suspect the HC is already hired. Zorn may wait to sign the contract until after the HC does. That'd be the smart thing to do.

There is another possibility. That Zorn accepted the job conditionally, and it is dependent on concluding an agreement with a specific HC.

If I'm Fassel and I have the offer, I sign the first doc Danny puts in front of me because I'm not in demand elsewhere. If I'm GG, I negotiate because I've delivered 3 top 10 defenses in 4 years and players like playing for me.

...although you know the Gurlz will be on the coaching carousel soon. Fans won't stand for a middling season next year, and frankly I think the Gurlz were overrated most of this season. A one and done in the playoffs as a #1 seed (for an overall 17-1 record for #1 seeds in the new format), followed by a struggle to even make the playoffs next year.... there is no real dominant team in the NFC East now, all are fully capable of beating each other.

I predict the Gurlz will have the kind of coaching (and dare I say possibly, QB?) instability the Skins endured between Gibbs 1.0 and Gibbs 2.0 (discounting the relatively stable, non-playoff team Norv so generously provided us).

It's amazing how the same man can handle the tragedy of Sean Taylor's death so well, can completely screw up hiring a coach. Amazing!!!

Posted by: johnthebassist | January 25, 2008 09:45 PM

He didn't handle Sean Taylor's death well. Joe Gibbs lead him, Vinny and the whole team through it. Did you notice who looked like the Billionaire at Joe Gibbs press conference two weeks ago? Joe Gibbs did. Dan looked confused and dazed. For someone who made his money in Marketing yoiu'd figure he would be a better communicator and salesman. He can't communicate with his coaches, team and fans to save his life.
I'd like to see everybody (coaches, players and fans) bail on him so he has to fire Vinny and sell the team to someone who knows how to judge talent (maybe Joe Gibbs can come back and by it at discount).

Clearly this is nothing but little Dannyboys sandbox power play. Any self-respecting coach is going to want say over player decisions. There was only one coach - Joe Gibbs that he was willing to give that up for. Now when Greg Williams insisted he, and not BB Vinny have say over players, Dannyboy said no! This is my sandbox. You can go home if you don't like it!! So little Napolianic owner highjacks our team. He's an %&*%*&^% Ugh!

I am a lifelong Washington Redskin fan. I have lived through A.D. Whitfield debacle, consistent 45-44 losses due to a crappy defense even with Sam Huff, Chris Hamburger and Brig Owens. I lived through George Allen benching the best pure passer that ever lived . I have been a Skins fan through thick and thin. I will always be a skins fan. For those of you who are thinking about abandoning ship just because you don't like Daniel Snyder's choices for coach, your not skins fans, your bandwagon fans. I have seen many owners and many coaches and many players. I think it is important to support our boys no matter what the owner does. Jim Fassel or Greg Williams? I would rather see Greg Williams but I will be a Skins fan even if they hire Homer Simpson. Either your a fan or not. Leave your hollow threats at the door. True Skins fans don't want you tszcz. Go root for the Browns until their owner makes a decision you don't like then maybe you can root for Dallas if you can handle Jerry Jones.

What appeared obvious is now official: Gregg Williams is no longer under consideration for the Washington Redskins head coaching vacancy, team and league sources told ESPN.

Williams, the defensive coordinator, fell out of favor during the interview process because sources said Redskins owner Daniel Snyder was disappointed by what he perceived to be Williams' criticism of Joe Gibbs, who retired as head coach.

Williams could not be reached for comment but a source close to him said he believed that the defensive coordinator had specific ideas that created philosophical differences with staffing and personnel issues. The source had no knowledge of Williams' alleged critcism of Gibbs.

Williams interviewed or met with Snyder and executive vice president of player personnel Vinny Cerrato on at least four occasions.

Williams technically remains under contract and has not yet been fired. The Washington Post reported that the Jacksonville Jaguars have an interest in Williams as defensive coordinator to replace Mike Smith, who was hired as Atlanta's head coach.

That leaves former Giants coach Jim Fassel and Colts defensive coordinator Ron Meeks alive in the process, although the Redskins will wait until after the Super Bowl before naming a coach. They may seek permission to interview Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo after the game.

The Redskins hired Seahawks quarterbacks coach Jim Zorn as their new offensive coordinator, ESPN's John Clayton reported earlier. The team is expected to announce that addition on Saturday and team sources also told Mortensen that offensive coordinator Al Saunders was given permission to speak with the St. Louis Rams about the same position.

Chris Mortensen is an NFL analyst for ESPN.

Leevi98,

Fassel was 58-53-1 w/ Giants. Yes, GW was dreadful in Buffalo. Then again, Belichick was fired in Cleveland and wasn't doing so well in NE until Brady stepped in and saved the day. The point is we're not talking about blowing out GW and bringing in Cowher or Belichick. We're talking about Fassel, a re-tread who no one else is interested in. I believe GW has learned from Gibbs and will be better the 2nd time around. And if we're theoretically choosing between two mediocre coaches, then might as well maintain the continuity. The players at least deserve that much after dealing with the Taylor tragedy.

Talent_Evaluator,
As for "who hires an OC before hiring the head coach?"...ummm, real professional football teams. The kind that have a real front office with a real GM instead of a fantasy-geek owner and his racquetball buddy. BTW, how did things work out for the Cowgirls in the postseason? Jason Garrett is the flavor of the month. I remember when Norv Turner was that guy. We all remember how well that worked out. And spare me the details on how he took them to the AFC championship. Marty could have done the same with that squad. Marty didn't lose that playoff game last year, the players did.

Anyway, gotta roll and get a good night's sleep. I have a big 12 hour interview with Snyder tomorrow for the head coaching job.

From ESPN, this could get ugly.......

What appeared obvious is now official: Gregg Williams is no longer under consideration for the Washington Redskins head coaching vacancy, high-ranking team and league sources have told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

However, Williams said Friday night that he has yet to be informed of that decision and strongly rebutted any notion that he criticized former Redskins coach Joe Gibbs during the interview process, as team and league sources claimed Friday.

"I haven't been told anything," said Williams. "And I would never, ever dump on Joe Gibbs. He is one of the best people I have ever been around in life. I came here because of Joe Gibbs. He's in the Hall of Fame as a coach and he's a better person than he is a football coach. I can't believe anybody would suggest I dumped on Joe. That's completely false."

Williams said that he had three interview sessions, not four as reported, with Redskins owner Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerrato, the team's executive vice president of player personnel. He said there was never any tension in those interviews.

"Dan and I, and Vinny, had a good time during the process," said Williams. "As far as I'm concerned, everything went well. We laughed, we joked. We never had anything we disagreed on, not really. Vinny and I have gotten along very well, too."

Williams did not say whether he is disappointed about the news that he was no longer a candidate for the job.

"All I can tell you is that I'm very comfortable in my own skin and I learned how to do that from being around Joe Gibbs," he said. "I'm not in control of this but I'm very content with where I am in life right now."

A source close to Williams theorized that the Redskins may start a smear campaign against the defensive coordinator because he has had strong support from players, media and Redskins' fans.

Posted by: beercan | January 25, 2008 11:06 PM | Report abuse

When Gibbs retired again, it was Synders chance to hire an up and coming professional GM/personnel guy, a Bobby Beathard type. But what does Snyder do? He promotes Vinny Cerrato?

So, I'm not sure it matters who the coach is. While Gibbs engineered some terrible personnel decisions (Brunnell, Bailey for Portis, Duckett, Lloyd, etc), at least the players would run through a wall for him. Now with the Vinny/Synder GM tandem running the show, the team is doomed to be mediocre for the forseeable future.

I live in the Bay Area. Home of two of the worst owners in football. Two teams with greatness -- in their history.

If you want to go to a home game, you can usually get tix for less than face, often for free.

What do the Yorks and Al Davis have in common with Snyder? They don't respect their own people.

The Yorks couldn't wait to run Bill Walsh and anything he had ever touched out of the building. How has that worked out?

Al Davis just got weirder and greedier by the year. He sat down Marcus Allen and has tried to swindle a whole lot of people, some with success. No one likes or respects the guy. Its why he had to go for Lane Kiffin, 30 years old and no head coaching experience.

If Danny respects what the 2007 team accomplished, I can respect him. if he doesn't, I can't. He has had nearly a decade as an owner to learn that basic lesson.

For those who will stick with this team, go ahead. But as Danny starts finding that no one wants his money, things will get tough. When the wait list goes away, the value of the team will drop. He is on that path. And at the core ... Danny doesn't respect the work of others. And it will bite him and this franchise. For decades.

After 20 some years, Joe gets all the credit for that first run. But Bobby Beathard found that first group of players and Joe Gibbs as well.

It won't matter who the coach is unless they start drafting players of the same caliber as Monk, Green, Grimm, May etc, etc.

I agree...the ESPN reports says SOURCES....real reliable...

As we know Sources are often made up by the exact people typing the article.

Until I hear something from a local source....not associated with Len Pasquarelli...or Doctor Z......I don't believe anything else.

Wouldn't it be funny if Snyder, Cerrato, and Williams had already come to terms on what was going to occur?? And are just letting the PR wheels spin.....

IMO that would be pure genius......

As in any of these interview processes....the head coach candidates already ahve an idea of what staff changes they were contemplating. Williams got the Buffalo job by being that prepared....and you know he already had someone in mind....and we knew it wasnt going to be Saunders for his OC. For his DC he could promote from within or bring in another friend from outside.

So we'll let the dust settle......
If the Post's article is correct in that both Fassel and Williams had ZORN in mind....

As I said before Danny is the Head Coach. He has been picking the brain of these stooges he is interviewing and then hiring who they like as his coordinators. The Token Head Coach will come out of one of the two Super Bowl teams. He is learning from his buddy Jerry Jones. "How about them Redskins?"

What seed was the Giants? What seed was the Cowboys? You gotta get to the playoffs before you get to the Big Dance. We were heading in the right direction, what's wrong with peaking at the end of the season?

Posted by: Alan4 | January 25, 2008 11:34 PM | Report abuse

just for the record, Norv deserved to be fired. Marty didn't. He had the team going in the right direction.

I didn't fault Snyder for believing Spurrier was great and hiring him, even though I didn't agree with the move. I'm not sure anyone wanted to keep Spurrier!! If we had kept Marty, we'd have been fine for years.

I thought the Gibbs hire was great. Turned into a mixed blessing. The one thing Gibbs did brilliantly, he restored respect and pride. That is tough to do, but its a terrific foundation to build upon.

Lose respect and you go the way of the Cards, SF and Oakland. Gibbs got this team off that path. Snyder seems determined to put it back on that path.

This is just devastating news....how can one owner be so low and continue to treat people like crap?

This has been a very challenging week....thought at least the weekend would be low key.....but no, he has to sneak this news in at the end of the night.

Posted by: Lisa_R | January 25, 2008 11:38 PM | Report abuse

chrislarry,

This may sound crazy but Snyder is a good owner in the sense from the business side and the NFL owners love him. As a personal guy he is lost. But give some credit he does try to sign the best players and throws big money at everyone. Some of those signings were awful. I am a Yankee fan AND George Stienbreener was awful early on but he won 6 World Series. Now he is a legend. I compare him to Snyder because he is a fan that came into money. I think Snyder in the end will get better and we have to not jump the gun. He did get Joe Gibbs. Lets wait and see what he does. He finally has an up and coming qb and hires today a very good coach that develops QBS. So I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt. Robert Kraft was hated and until Tom Brady. Lets see what Snyder does?

Posted by: tjzukoski | January 25, 2008 11:38 PM | Report abuse

It's hard to be a fan of this team. You no longer become invested in players and coaches because with this owner it gets blown up every few years. All Snyder gives a sh!t about is his pocketbook. Unless that gets affected he's going to keep doing this time after time.

Posted by: david | January 25, 2008 11:41 PM | Report abuse

hey allan-
we're one of the main reasons the giants are in the superbowl.

i'm a joe gibbs 1 man- joe gibbs 2 was not working. why do you think he walked away?

let's get some new life in the coaching staff- get rid of the 10,000 useless coaches (don breux the offensive coordinator)

i'm not a snyder fan or a fan of what's going on a fedex field(outrageous prices, # of opposing team fans)- but you got to admit the guy wants to win.

all i ask is he hang on to the draft picks and use them wisely.

Exactly what has Snyder's approach done? 6th seed? That is as good as it has gotten.

Blow this up and you'll be longing for the days of 6th seed. If you think this is not good, try being a Raider fan. They had so ticked off their fan base, they couldn't sell out even when they were on the way to a Super Bowl. I've seen it. Too many of my friends. Danny is that type of owner. The guy who only respects his inner circle and no one else (though Al Davis has no inner circle, its just him)

Its fine to want better than a 6th seed. This team beat the team with the best record in the NFC, beat the NFC champs on the road and played the other division winners very tough on the road. This team needs to take another step up. Cleaning house is not a step up.

- the owners love him? maybe a few but think your overstating that.

- steinbrenner analogy (i am also yankees fan, and live in NYC)is on surface good, but breaks down quickly. 1. he was much more transparent with press, and he won championships quicker

- also he spends his money dumb, not giving him kudos just b/c he spends like lottery winner

- also you dont really address what my point is/was which was the dude is a loser of a person, and that is depressing to root for.

- but hey i am never stopping being a fan of the team, and if he does figure it out i will love it and "forget" all the qualities that make him such a pr!ck.

You are assuming the Gibbs II wasn't limited by Dan and Vinny. We don't know what he'd have been able to do with another Jack Kent and Bobby B at the top.

My guess is that he had enough and walked because of them, not his family. He has too much class to admit it or talk about it now. Who knows, maybe Dan asked him to walk.

All I know is that we were better off two weeks ago than we will be 4 years from now.

Posted by: chargersix | January 25, 2008 11:46 PM | Report abuse

Jax, Danny does want to win. But he doesn't know how to win.

The most important ingredient for winning? Getting the people in your organization to run thru walls for you. To lead, you have to inspire and respect. Danny does neither. Which is why this team is one Jim Fassel away from seeing its value cut in half.

Posted by: zcezcest1 | January 25, 2008 11:46 PM | Report abuse

Yellow Jax,
Joe Gibbs 2 was the best thing since Joe Gibbs 1. You have to admit that. Give the Giants credit, they put themselved in the position they're in. The Skins beat them convincingly late in the season, and the Giants moved on to the next game.

I'm sure if we'd kept Marty around longer, the Skins would be a contender. But Gibbs 2 has been a big improvement over what went on after Gibbs 1. I think Gibbs walked away for the same reason he walked away the first time--burnout.

zcezcest1 - excellent take - rack it. Snyder has always struck me as a faux leader and wannabe tough guy who likely can't deal with ideas and opinions from other strong personalities. The most glaring manifestation of this weak streak is his inability to deal with the fact that the team needs a real executive, a full-fledged GM, not a college talent-scout to "run" the team. And there has to be a point at which no self-respecting executive or coach will want to be associated with the 'skins -- big money or not. As for all the czab haters in here: get a grip, he accurately identifies the real issues way more often than Andy Polly and the other talkers -- and he doesn't suck up to the 'skins a la xxx-zzz.

Lisa_R,

I disagree because hiring Gibbs showed me his desire to win. He would hire Bill Cower tonight for 50 million but Cower has no desire to coach this year. There are no good head coaching candidates out there. Name one besides Williams. Greg Williams was in the Super Bowl for the Titans running the D and went 17 and 31 as a head coach and rubbed people the wrong. He came here to learn under Gibbs and has. So if Snyder is taking his time then thats smart on his part. The roster is very good and thats a credit to the Ownership. He allowed Gibbs to hire any coach, get any player. I like him as an owner because most owners will not do it. Steve Spurrier put the franchise back by getting awful Qbs. But Gibbs drafted Campbell and he is special. I like what Snyders done with the Roster. I think early on as an owner he was awful. But The last 3 years he has gotten better.

Stienbrenner bought the team and had a good roster and free agency in baseball has no cap.
The owners do love him. He is in charge of all marketing by the owners and made them more money.
I am not saying I am pro Snyder.
My question is What coaches are out there that are worth hiring as a head coach besides Williams?'

Thats why he is being careful.

What a sad day. I have lost all respect for Snyder. Don't hire Williams if that's your decision, but don't smear his good name in the process.

Sad.

tjzukoski - dude - there is being careful and then there is letting someone twist in the wind . I would be amazed if GW came here after this treatment, unless the danny had given him the heads-up beforehand -- "Gregg, I gotta drum up some excitement here so I can't coronate you right now...just wait a couple of weeks." And from recent news reports, that doesn't seem to be the case.

Posted by: MK67 | January 26, 2008 12:02 AM | Report abuse

@tjzukoski

I have to agree with some of your statements.
Methinks the REDSKINS primary role in this search should be in continuing the development of Campbell.

I also do think the Redskins are closer to a youth purge than most people want to admit...it began last year and I expect that with a new head coach....it was going to be really forwarded this year.....especially with a # of BIG BIG contracts coming up or entering their late years (which = Big moolah).

So with Saunders gone....I pretty much expect we aren't going to tender Collins a huge contract. So which backup QB should they go after?? (Brunell will be gone too)

Posted by: goosedude | January 26, 2008 12:05 AM | Report abuse

MK67,
The Redskins have said nothing. Period. Morts report is off based or right but I am sure Greg Williams knows whats going on because of Joe Gibbs.
Joe Gibbs will not aLLOW his coaches to twist in the wind.
Also if he is twisting in the wind thats Snyder's right. I just don't think the reports true. Espn said Fassel was going be hired 2 days ago. See what I mean.

Drew Henson UFA Minnesota Vikings
Cleo Lemon UFA Miami Dolphins
Jared Lorenzen UFA New York Giants

This whole charade is so disappointing on so many levels. Who knows if Gregg Williams is the right choice from a purely football perspective. However, right now there are really no better alternatives, so you have to take other issues into consideration. The Redskins may be owned by Snyder, but they are the community property of the Washington DC area. This was never more evident than in the tragic wake of Sean Taylor's death. There was a passion and fervor of support for this team that I had not seen or felt in years . . . and it started BEFORE the kick-off of the Bears' game . . . before we started winning. We hurt as a community of football fans and humans and we rallied behind an organization as if they were family . . . and they responded. During the 4-game winning street we saw a team of players and coaches act as one and they succeeded against all odds.

It is disheartening that Snyder is electing to so quickly squash the goodwill that has finally been created for his benefit. He is either the biggest idiot in Washington or he takes advice from the biggest idiots in Washington. Hello Vinny. Let's look at this rationally. He hires Williams and 95% of all Redskins' fans applaud him and continue this feel-good momentum created at the end of last season. Hopefully Williams has learned from his Buffalo mistakes and can go on to be a great head-coach like Belichek. He certainly has the full support of the players, fellow coaches and fans. If he doesn't succeed, then Snyder has a free pass the next time around to do whatever he pleases without arousing such rancor and vitriol from those he depends upon. On the other hand, if he hires Fassel or some other re-tread, then Snyder will continue to get vilified, disrespected and downright detested in this community for years to come . . . regardless of how the team performs . . . not because he made a bad football move, but because he was disloyal, classless, dishonest and inept in the way he dealt with his employees and, most importantly, his fans and fellow Washingtonians. Danny, do the right thing and give Gregg his shot. He is one of us and deserves to be given the reins for better or for worse. From what I've been reading all week on this board, most of us would rather root for a losing team that has our respect than a winning team where players, coaches and fans are all just commodities and pawns.

Perhaps Gibbs was told to play along and paid off to "save face" and went along with the PR/marketing spin. With this owner, who knows?

It's frustrating - I think I'm giving up on any expectations of the team until there's a new owner.
