Zorn Jabs Rookie WRs; Wade, Heyer Out 2 Weeks

Jim Zorn said rookie WR Malcolm Kelly will remain in Florida today after having arthroscopic knee surgery Monday and admitted that the team's diagnosis that he will miss two weeks after getting 'scoped was "ambitious." Kelly and Devin Thomas, who remains out with a hamstring injury, were labeled as a bit brittle in college by some scouts I've spoken to, and Zorn said today that both showed up for camp in less-than-stellar shape.

"He wasn't in condition to go through a training camp like this," Zorn said of Kelly. "He really wasn't."

Kelly and Thomas could not pass the team's conditioning test and their bodies quickly wore down with two-a-day practices, Zorn said (players have to perform a timed shuttle run within certain parameters). Both will miss several more weeks of the preseason and will be quite far behind. Zorn said it will be difficult to count on them to have mastered much of this system by the start of the season - if they are healthy - and they will very much be behind.

"I've had this happen in other places I've coached," Zorn said of the rookie WRs getting hurt, "and it's very difficult [to get caught up]."

Zorn said he told the youngsters that he would be jabbing from time to time about their conditioning, attributing part of it to their being selected so high in the draft. "If you can't pass that physical test that we give," Zorn said, "then something's not right." Zorn said that if his knees would allow it, he would take the test himself right now. "It's sort of a pride issue," Zorn said.

Kelly and Thomas may each find a niche in the offense early on in a particular situation (maybe Kelly in the red zone and Thomas on some fly routes), but Zorn has made it clear that James Thrash is definitely the No. 3 WR, and he isn't counting on the rookie receivers for much early on.

Wade and Heyer Out Two Weeks

As for other injuries, reserve tackles Todd Wade (high ankle sprain) and Stephon Heyer (MCL strain) will both miss at least two weeks, Zorn said. That's a pretty huge deal to me, considering they are the second-string tackles, and with the first team barely playing again Saturday night, someone's gonna have to protect Todd Collins's neck.

I asked if veteran lineman Jason Fabini would shift back to tackle for the exhibition games, but Zorn said probably not, that he expects Fabini to stay at guard, where he ended up starting most of last season because of injuries. So rookie Chad Rinehart, who had been playing tackle and guard, is now a left tackle, Zorn said. Tavares Washington is likely in line for a lot of duty at tackle, too, in the next two games. If I'm Collins, I'm not loving this setup.

Schweigert's swan song

Zorn and safeties coach Steve Jackson said essentially the same thing about releasing veteran safety Stuart Schweigert -- he wasn't fitting in this system. Schweigert kept applying the technique he performed in Oakland, where the safeties are more programmed -- to this system, where it doesn't apply. Particularly for the back-up free safety, the Skins want a guy who plays at a higher speed and attacks the ball.

"We give our safeties here a lot more freedom. In Oakland it's more restricted and confined," Jackson said. "Our system is -- you've got the green light to go make plays. His was, 'I have to back-peddle like this, I have to move like this I have to stay right here.'"

Punting Schedule

The reviews of rookie punter Durant Brooke were favorable after he was given all of Sunday's game to show his stuff. Now, incumbent Derrick Frost will get all the punts Saturday night again Buffalo, Zorn said. The team may opt to alter punters by the half in the remaining three games, but if Brooks builds off of Sunday's performance, I have a feeling this will be his job.

Rogers' Recovery Continues

Carlos Rogers continues to take full work in practice and said he hopes to play in the third or fourth preseason game, but would understand if the team still holds him out. He has not experienced any setbacks from his knee surgery. "It feels good," Rogers said. "It's not like I'm limping around or anything."

Other Injuries

QB Colt Brennan was limited in practice today by a mild buttock strain. Really. ... DT Anthony Montgomery and LB Rian Wallace were back doing a lot of work after breaking their hands in a scrimmage. Zorn said the team is fashioning custom casts for them - Zorn was pretty fired up about the whole fabrication process and was foaming at the mouth to be able to get in there and help make them (seriously). Anyway, he says there is a chance both guys could play Saturday ... WR Anthony Mix is getting back to speed after missing two weeks with a hamstring strain.

Mason Looking Good

The Skins have a load of running backs, but Zorn continues to rave about the local kid and thinks there could be a roster spot for the youngster who spent last year on the practice squad.

LOVE Zorn calling these kids out. Love it. Light a fire under their butts!

Instead of backup WRs, shouldn't we be bringing in some backup OLs for the next few weeks, to get the reps Wade and Heyer would be getting?

Who was the kid from Michigan State sween was in love with last preseason? Is he still out there?

Speaking of butts, Nate, Jasno forgot to note this on his post, so I'll update you here: Colt Brennan was limited in practice today by a mild butt strain.
Really.
Although I'm going to call it an upper-hamstring strain, if that's okay with y'all.

It should be no surprise Thomas and Kelly didn't pass the conditioning test. Thomas was a one year wonder at M. State and Kelly had a rep of not working hard at Oklahoma. Time to grow up boys and learn to be pros.

I'm thinking:

Zorn threw passes to Steve Largent

Largent is in the Hall of Fame with Howie Long

Long must have made a movie somewhere that can connect to Kevin Bacon

SKIPPY'S LOST PEST

Hi, I'm skippy and I have a metal plate in my...Blah blah blah.

With regurgitation looming, Skippy is sad. Because to pest under his true identitity would expostulate his true identity and Skippy can't have that happen. Because of Skippy's big Secret. Skippy is Batman but can't tell anyone.

Skippy will remain a big Redskim fan, because he roots for them all the time, and will lurk at the wedsite.

In the meantome, you can make do with the fake third person posters like The Truth, who is NOT Batman, and will either expose himself or slunk away too.

But mostly Skippy's hard go outs for all the Anons who must also stick it out and expose their selves.

Skippy will miss you, but not for lack of aiming.

Fondly,

Skippy

I have no idea how this season is going to turn out, but how can you not like Zorn? Joe Gibbs was an icon, but a coach from a different era while Zorn is honest and refreshing, but not a clueless character like Spurrier. Seems like a direct, no nonsense guy to me...love that he called the rookies out...needs to be more of that instead of the doublespeak that is common in sports.

Hits and Misses
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

John Keim
WarpathInsiders.com Aug 4, 2008

Here are the highlights and lowlights from the Redskins 30-16 win over Indianapolis in the preseason opener Sunday night. Also, how was Dan Snyder after the game in the locker room? Which current starter is one of Colt Brennan's biggest fan's? It's all right here...

Hits

...Jason Campbell connecting with Antwaan Randle El for a 20-yard touchdown on the game's third play. The outside receiver, Santana Moss, cleared out the corner and froze the safety allowing slotman Randle El to run an easy corner route. The Redskins have run that play almost to perfection in practice, so it was no surprise to see it work in a game.

...Quarterback Colt Brennan showed an awful lot last night. Let's not get carried away and proclaim him anything, but suffice to say he had a strong debut. Brennan showed accuracy and good decision-making. One time he held the ball too long - about five seconds -- and got hit. That's on him. But he threw a pretty corner pass to Maurice Mann for a touchdown, tying the game at 16. And he improvised nicely under pressure on a 5-yard touchdown pass to running back Marcus Mason.

...I like Mason; always have. He hits the hole very hard and when he cuts he's always moving forward. He showed that Sunday night.

...Corner Leigh Torrence showed unbelievable closing speed to defend one quick out and prevent a first down.

...Rookie End Robert Jackson had a first-half sack and for the most part did a good job, though he did get driven downfield a few times. In practices, he's shown enough to get more looks. That's what he did last night.

...Rookie Chad Rinehart seemed to do an OK job at left guard and later left tackle. Left guard is a better spot for him than outside; he seems to work well in traffic.

...Safety Chris Horton did a nice job blitzing off the edge, but did so unobstructed. Give him credit for being able to drag down a hefty QB in Jared Lorenzen.

Misses

...Todd Wade suffered a high ankle sprain, which means he could miss a while. We didn't know the severity of it last night, but typically they're 6-8 week injuries. Unless, that is, it's a mild one.

...Reserve left tackle Stephon Heyer was terrible in pass protection. Looked like what he is: a former rookie free agent. Let his man get into his chest and was not just beaten but destroyed on three occasions. His run blocking was much better; saw him driving his man downfield at times. Not sure that he's a future starter; certainly not at left tackle.

...Kicker Shaun Suisham missed a 39-yard field goal. He has not looked sharp in practice, so that certainly wasn't a good sign. The Redskins have their fingers crossed on him. But his kickoffs were pretty good.

...The third-down defense was atrocious early, but considering the Redskins played minus 7 defensive starters that's to be expected. Good pass rushes help third-down defenses. They did not do a great job aga inst the run, either, but one reason is because of the linebacker's depth. They had to line up an extra yard downfield because of the Colts' passing attack and the desire to play cover-2. They played pass first and run second. The safeties at times were 17 yards deep, similar to coverages they played last year.

...Rookie corner Justin Tryon did not have the best debut. Did not look great as a returner - remember him boasting about getting to the 50 every time? And he was beaten a couple times in coverage. Looked like he needed more depth in one zone coverage and was flagged for interference another time. On the latter, his lack of size worked against him. But he had good coverage on a fourth-down incompletion thrown his way.

Other thoughts:

...Good debut for Jim Zorn; his offense looked sharp. Let's see how it progresses, but it was a good start.

...Owner Dan Snyder was excited afterward, keeping the locker room closed a few extra minutes than they're supposed to because there was a little more excitement than normal for a preseason win. He's always been that way; reacted similarly after a scrimmage win vs. Pittsburgh in his first season. Hey, he's enthusiastic.

...One player after another praised Brennan's poise in the pocket. Moss loves the kid; told him when he got here how he was a big fan of his. Gotta make a young kid feel good to hear that.
