Zorn: Taylor, Springs Out Monday

Defensive end Jason Taylor (calf) and corner Shawn Springs (calf) will miss Monday's game against Pittsburgh, Coach Jim Zorn said, and he expects running back Clinton Portis (hip/ankle) to play.

Pro Bowl left tackle Chris Samuels had an MRI on his right knee today and Zorn said that he will try to play through a cartilage problem that could require surgery at some point (Samuels has had two arthroscopic procedures on the knee), while top receiver Santana Moss has a "slightly strained hamstring," Zorn said, that could keep him out as well.

Zorn said that most of the injuries do not appear to require a lengthy recuperation, just daily treatment and attention to try to reduce aggravation. Taylor's calf, on which he underwent emergency surgery to relieve acute compartment syndrome Sept. 22, was lanced last night, Zorn said. He is battling swelling and also had a strep infection (and not the dreaded and dangerous staph infection) in the calf, Zorn said, which is being treated with antibiotics. Zorn said the infection is "not dangerous" and was essentially from "a dirty wound." "It's not staph at all," Zorn said.

Taylor will do nothing for three days and the hope is that that will decrease the swelling so that the doctors can close the wound properly. Taylor may be able to return after the bye week, Zorn said. Springs's strain was fairly severe, Zorn said, with an MRI confirming as much, and, as we reported week ago, Springs is out through the bye week, but hopes to play against Dallas.

Samuels has irritation in his cartilage - he was a late scratch Sunday - and "it's going to be sore" for a while, Zorn said. The Redskins would hope that any surgery could be put off until the offseason, but this is a situation that will be monitored very closely, with Samuels essentially an irreplaceable player.

Moss is also a unique talent - the team's only touchdown threat this season in the passing game, with little depth at receiver - and has a long history of hamstring problems. Zorn said there is a little swelling in the hamstring and the team hopes that with rest and an extra day between games that Moss can play Monday.

Zorn is also waging an internal battle with Moss's role. As the top wideout and only real deep threat, Moss is always on the field. He's also a potential game-breaker on punt returns (he returned one 80 yards for a score Sunday), but Zorn is trying to guard against using him too much and exposing him to injury, especially with hamstring injuries so difficult to avoid.

"You risk getting injured more on the punt return," Zorn said, calling it a "tough" quandary.

Zorn said he expects Portis to play, though he is tired and beat up, like the rest of the team. Zorn said defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin's shoulder is feeling better after sitting out Sunday, and he will play, while he also expects starting strong safety Chris Horton (ankle) to play against the Steelers.

Red DMV....its called having a viewpoint and coming hard with your opinions, ok cousin? Take your limp wristed pillow biting "don't disagree with me or my feelings are hurt" rants back to fronT royal, or Fairfax Circle and lick your gash wounds like a good dawg, ok?

Posted by: chrislarry | October 27, 2008 12:58 PM

Ooooo, ouch. I guess you told me.

Fairfax Circle?

Wow, I have a moment of contriteness, and this d-bag, chrislarry takes a shot? what an @ssbag, you are man. Gave you and your boy props. Sh*t, I should've went against you...

Oh well, F it, I'll get 'em.

LOL. The whole "don't disagree with me or my feelings are hurt", are a DIRECT reflection of you, a-hole. You're the one who cries and pisses when someone talks about something that you don't like. You then have a need to co-sign all the time instead of minding yours--that'll get you F'd up out here if you come acorss the wrong one. I'm not saying, but I'm DAMN sure saying, feel me?

But go ahead and keep frontin' like a tough guy. Why, because you're from New York? Please mother-f'er, you're a soft little biatch, who's panties run red everytime someone doesn't stroke her pathetic little ego.

You're a f'n retard, little man. I'll chalk up your bitterness and disdain as a result of either A) Your impotence B) you're a di*khead , or C) you're just a self-serving, self-indulging prick who cries when he doesn't get his way.

I'm going with 'C' here, but wouldn't rule out 'B' either.

Take that "I'm a tough guy because of 9/11" sh*t back to Manhattan, Queens, or where ever you're from. Okay, jagoff?

"tough quandary"???

Without Moss's punt return for a TD against the Lions, we lose. It would be an uphill battle to beat the Steelers without Springs, Samuels, AND Moss.

Ugh.. having Samuels or Moss out would be devastating..... if Moss is out, teams will be stuffing 10 in the box and forcing us to throw to our non-threat receivers.

Acutally, a win over Dallas is better than a win over the Bucs. Been there, done that.

Dfan - you didn't see us celebrating because we won yesterday; actually, most of the Skins and Redskins Nation was frustrated by our play.

Unlike your team and group of coaches...I hope you guys keep Wade Phillips around as long as possible. The guy is a joke and Dallas will never win with him at the helm. What a loser. Guy has no control over his team... whines all the time, acts like a 7 year old when something good happens.

Did anyone else notice that Dallas should have been penalized after that 4th down celebration when the Dallas player took off his helmet to celebrate?

also note that they barely beat 'em and they got a TON of calls, so much that ESPN showed literally 4 or 5 bad play calls that went Dallas's way on one drive, and then there was a missed PI call on the last 4th down play for the Bucs.

I saw that too. The announcer said that the guy on Tampa actually threw his helmet though. Not sure what would have happened if they saw both guys....maybe offsetting with a replay the down? Don't know if Dallas got lucky on that one or not.

They weren't penalized. The O-Lineman from Tampa was penalized. And it wouldn't have mattered, anyway, since the penalty would have come after the end of the play.

Even though it doesn't pertain to this post, I just can't get over the fact that people actually defend this LaCanfora guy. His writing is horrible. He completely bashed the Skins in his H-Back segment, and said they would have lost to any other team with the performance they gave against Detroit. So Campbell throws for 328, completes 80% of his passes, CP goes for 125, and S. Moss goes for 140, but accordinf to LaCanfora that's not good enough. The post needs to do something about this guy. The Skins are 6-2 and the halfway point, with the league's leading rusher, 5th rated passer, and 5th leading receiver in the entire NFL. But according to Lacanfora they aren't that good. Ha, this guy's a joke. I guess since they aren't winning games 35-3, they aren't good enough for him. NO TEAM in the NFL is dominating games. It is wide open this year, and the Skins are sitting very pretty at the half point. DID YOU PEOPLE ACTUALLY READ HIS "MONDAY MORNING H-BACK"? He obviusly has some sort of grudge against the team, and for a guy who clearly has never played organized sports in his entire life, it's pretty annoying to read. The Post needs to step in and get a decent beat writer. Seriously people, wake up!

Posted by: cj658 | October 27, 2008 2:12 PM | Report abuse

Dfan,

Come on now, be reasonable. No one here is bragging that the Skins have done anything. The way we're playing now we aren't gonna win a Super Bowl. But stop it already with the arrogance. You all have a tough stretch to get through just to make the playoffs, and you know it. 5-4 after next weekend, and then you get your chance to beat us in D.C.

Posted by: mrizzle | October 27, 2008 2:13 PM | Report abuse

Long-term the Steelers game isn't as important as a division battle against Dallas or NY which essentially counts two games in the standards. As much as we'd all like Samuels and Moss to play, it's not worth risking them if they are playing hurt. With a week off plus the two weeks to get ready for Dallas, we'd like to have Springs, Moss, and Samuels as close to 100% as possible for what may be the most important game of the season.

Taylor was foolish to play against Detroit knowing he needed another procedure and possibly had an infection. I don't see how a 60% Jason Taylor would be as good as a 100% Demetric Evans. Even with Griffin out, I'd have started Evans at DE and rotated in Wilson and E. James on pass rush downs. It's not like Taylor is generating any pass rush pressure on one leg and its obvious that teams are doubling on Carter since he's our only pass rush threat.

The prior reference to Dallas Coach as Pillsbury Dough Boy and/or Bob's Big Boy had me spit taking my coffee.

You would have thought that the Cowgirls had just won the Super Bowl. Almost as funny as Danny White crying after Dexter Manley face planted him. Truth is Dallas coach was probably happy that the win allowed him to keep his job for another week.

What is the over/under on Cowgirls losses and him being unemployed?

Posted by: captjim | October 27, 2008 2:15 PM | Report abuse

Gotta love the logic, or lack thereof, of Cowboys fans.

Who did we beat? We beat the teams that were on our schedule. The Browns and Lions.

We lost to the Rams on a last second FG, on a game we gave away with fluke turnovers. The same Rams that destroyed you weeks ago.

Who have YOU beaten this year?

Quit goofing off on mom's computer and go back to your homework.

As opposed to you guys who scare whom? You don't get to the superbowl with preseason hype, degenerates and staring in "Hard Knocks." I'm not sure where the skins will be at the end of the year. I know this, right now I'll put my record over yours. I'll take my players over yours. I'll take my coach over yours.

You've won 1 game don't get too excited. Ol' Roy Williams getting that TD and "hook'em horns" had to bother TO. You aren't out of the woods yet because you beat a pedestrian if efficient Tampa team at home and scored 13 points doing it.

From CNN's Peter King (whose writing is so bad it makes JLC's seems like Flaubert):

"Special Teams Player of the Week
Jacoby Jones, PR, Houston. Jones must have taken a Devin Hester pill before the Texans' 35-6 tattooing of the toothless Bengals. That's who Jones looked like in zigging and zagging through the wilderness of the Cincinnati punt-coverage unit three minutes into the game at Reliant Stadium for a 73-yard touchdown. It was the single-most impressive special-teams play of Sunday's action."

Ummm, wasn't Santana's PR 80 yards?

King is the ultimate d-bag.

Also, I'm listening to John Thompson's show right now, and JT is the voice of reason (as usual) while B-Mitch is wondering why the Skins aren't "blowing out lesser teams."

The dude's a hater.

Dfan: Since I'm on here, I'll address you.

Your team is pathetic. Your fat azz coach and your joke of a defensive coordinator were jumping up and down like Dallas actually won a playoff game. You would never see, Belichick, Dungy, Holmgren, or even Reid celebrating like that after a HOME WIN against a team they were supposed to beat. Just think about that. That just goes to show how awful things have gotten in Dallas. If I'm a boys fan, I'm very concerned. Oh, and the trade for Roy= PANIC MODE!! HAHA. You guys suck. We already took care of you on your home field, and it'll be more of the same in Fedex. THE BOYS are 2-5 vs the SKINS IN THE PAST 7 GAMES. HAHA, how pathetic. I'm guessing your a Yankee fan too.

Good luck with the Giants next week, you'll need it, if you think what they did to Big Ben was nasty, how do you think Brad will fair. HAHAHA, what a loser you are.

P.S. - I never played pro football.

Anthony Mix is not the answer to Moss sitting out. And of course, neither is Kelley.

We need to keep Santana healthy. I'm not sold on Randal El returning punts, so you know I'm not happy having SM back there. Yes it proved to be a great decision yesterday but if Santana has a nagging hamstring for the remainder - what would you have for that decision?

He can not be a decoy, we tried that all of last season. He has to be 100%. Once the hammy acts up, its probably not going away. I would almost say sit him for the Steelers game, let it rest over the bye week.

I'm also worried about Chris Samuels, he's a big part of the Oline and we need that anchor. I hope he's ok.

I think Clinton Portis is more banged up than he's letting us know about. Still has lingering shoulder problem, hip flexor over the last several weeks, and now the ankle sprain. Not to mention the beating and pounding his body takes running 1,000 yards in 8 games, while getting older. He'll be lucky to finish the season. I think getting Shaun Alexander is a good insurance pickup.

I'm not going to show my frustration with Springs and Taylor. I think Taylor has been a bust of a redskin. And its no way I sign Springs next season, he's not healthy 30% of the time and he misses spring and summer activities. I'm tired of Springs being overpaid and under played. We need young healthy guys at cornerback and safety. Its no way I let SS go to safety. We have LL and Horton doing a bang up job, SS will only provide problems. He's not physical enough or when he is he gets hurt.

Posted by: Rando | October 27, 2008 2:38 PM | Report abuse

This team deserved to be ripped this week. yeah we got the win but we looked terrible. Its hard to get up and be accountable when your playing in High school like environment. But our Oline looked as bad as it has at any time. Our pass game was dependaent upon 2 people,89 and Cooley against a miserable D where we really needed to be inserting and utilizing younger guys D.Thmoas and davis to get them ready for the future. We had more mental lapses again, our kicker shanked another FG. We got stupid penalites, Jansen and Landry. We depended upon using our best pass weapon toi win the game on a punt return, but we cant relly on that cause hes our only weapon.

This team has had many ups and down and 6-2 is great. The diffrence between the past and now is that we are winning the 2, 3, 6 point games. However if we continue to play to the level of our compettion we will not grow was a team. We need to go out and have a dominate and consistant game, because we really have not yet this year.

Posted by: chrislarry | October 27, 2008 2:38 PM | Report abuse

The Redskins are piling up yards -- 439 in total offense against the Lions -- and not getting nearly enough points out of them, and their 25-17 victory over the Lions was closer than it should have been. If a team with a 6-2 record can be called an underachiever, then that's what the Redskins are as far as Zorn is concerned.

My thought's exactly. If Moss doesn't play, or CP, we're screwed.

Just musing here. If everyone was healthy, these would be the players we could least afford to see injured:

Samuels
Fletcher
Moss

The criteria includes looking at who takes the place of these guys if they are hurt. Moss is replaced by Thrash or Thomas, Samuels by Heyer and Fletcher by Blades.

At this point, everyone isn't healthy.

So add to that list:
Portis (since Betts is out)
Landry and Rogers (since Springs is out, Doughty is IR and Horton is hurting)

Sorry, I actually don't read this "blog" to often. Any true Skins fan would annoyed at the way this guy writes.

Really? Guess I'm not a true fan then. This statement is smart.

Posted by: Gweez | October 27, 2008 2:51 PM | Report abuse

You should never say this, but I would rather rest Samuels, Moss, Taylor, Portis and Griffin against Pittsburg. Losing against Pittsburg would not be the end of the world. After the bye week we need everyone healthy for the last 7 games in which we need to go 5-2 and make the playoffs.

11-5 babyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!

And yes I'm telling everyone to wake up who actually thinks this guy is a good writer, including you, "dlhaze1". I vented my opinion on your message board in an appropriate way, so if you don't like oh well.

Hey, everyone's entitled. All the complaining about JLC being negative just gets stale IMO, but again, everyones free to write what they want. To me it's just the same old whining over and over again (I read the blog every day, though, so I see it more than you I guess). I like his take on things....seems grounded and he does give praise when praise is due. I'll take JLC over someone like Larry Michael and Redskins dotcom any day.
Let's just say that there are a few of us up here that think he is a good writer, and the fact that he works for the Wapo pretty much backs that up. He's not writing for some rag like the mont. news journal....

Can we agree on one thing though DMV, that The Truth is a complete d-bag?

Posted by: chrislarry | October 27, 2008 2:38 PM

A d-bag to the fullest.

I must say with my tourette syndrome like comments, you and Greg's egomaniacal angels you take in your post, and TheTruth's bipolar slant; this makes a good place to hang out.

I love personality and this place is full of it.

I doubt there will be many Terrible (looking) towels around the stadium on Monday.

Now, hopefully all of you can make it to the game and avoid traffic.

" the team's only touchdown threat this season in the passing game, with little depth at receiver - and has a long history of hamstring problems."

can the beat reporter be any more cynical in his commentary?

Posted by: gregskins | October 27, 2008 2:57 PM | Report abuse

Pittsburgh ... they hung 38 on the Texans in the opener and 38 on the Bengals. So they can pile up points against poor defenses.

But against non-doormats?

Browns: 10 points (in horrid weather)
Eagles: 6 points
Ravens: 23 points (3 in OT & d scored a TD)
Jags: 26 points
jints: 14 points

In other words, score 20 points and we'll probably win. Score 14 and you have a shot.

Just a guess, but I think we may get a Chris Wilson sighting vs Pittsburgh. Guy was a good pass rusher last year and this would be a very good week for him to step up. The Steelers are quite vulnerable to a good pass rush. Now if we only had a good pass rush ...

"[Lacanfora] completely bashed the Skins in his H-Back segment, and said they would have lost to any other team with the performance they gave against Detroit."

Redskins Defensive Coordinator Greg Blache: The defense played "like the south end of a north-bound skunk."-- Clearly Coach Blache is a bashing, stinking hater, and should be replaced at once.

just kidding arround.

Good stuff....

Told that Greg Blache had described the defense’s performance as “like the south end of a north-bound skunk,” Zorn was both confused — “On video, what does that mean? What did that look like?” — and enthused: “That’s a great phrase. It’s a great hunting phrase.”

Dfan?! Were'nt you cryin' around here last week that u wur a D-trout fan?!

(I know, I know.. you're a fan of whoever we're playing...)

Contratz, tho. Tampa is a tough place to eek out a win this season.

And as far as who we've beaten... that would be you... the rest of the season doesn't matter as much as beating your over-hyped squad. I look forward to doing it again next month.

I cant believe we gave up a freaggin TD to Rudi Johnson, an 11 yard TD run in the red zone no less. We have shut out MB3, Jamal Lewis, Steven Jackson, Reggie Bush... and we give up a rushing TD to this past prime scrub, Blatch will indeed not be happy with the way his D played.
Horton goes ahead and stuffs that run at or behind the line.

. DID YOU PEOPLE ACTUALLY READ HIS "MONDAY MORNING H-BACK"? He obviusly has some sort of grudge against the team, and for a guy who clearly has never played organized sports in his entire life, it's pretty annoying to read. First of all, I stand by my comments. A true fan would be annoyed by a guy who bashes a 6-2 team, with the top runner, 5th best passer & 5th best receiver statistically. This is not the NCAA poopymcpoop, so you get over yourself. In the NFL you never measure how good a tem is by margin of victory. How many teams did the Giants blow out last year?? All you people claiming to be true fans sitting here whining about how they need to play better, or else. Go to Lacanfora's journalism school or something. the Skins are just fine, and are a top 5 team in the league. And for the record, if a guy is going to sit here and write about what the Skins need to do to be better, it DOES matter if he's never played the game before. Most writers/journalists have never played the game, but they don't sit there and critique the team, saying they better start playing better. Lacanfora should simply report the injuries and the results, rather that "diagnose" the skins problems. the Skins are playing excellent football, and if they keep playing this way, they will be 11-5. No need to switch anything up. For "true fans" you a lot of you people whine too much.

Posted by: cj658 | October 27, 2008 3:09 PM | Report abuse

The Steeler game is going to be very interesting. Both teams play tough defense and think ball control, which leads to games where neither team is likely to pull away.

I'm not fearing their defense. They held Cincy to 10 (with Fitzpatrick at QB) and the Browns to 6 in horrid weather. But the jints and Jags each got 21 and the Ravens got 20.

We're the best offense of the teams they've played so far (which say something about their schedule). So getting 20 sounds about right. Which gives the Skins a very good chance to win.

A Dallas fan is talking?

I hear the concern about a pass rush, but what worries me is the fact that we are inept in the red/green zone. It's a known fact that you can't keep kicking field goals during the game and expect to win ALL the time.

Two of those Swissham field goals should've been TDs yesterday. What's up with the shovel pass? I never liked that play.

And not to get into full bi*ch mode or sound completely negative, is it just me or does Clinton Portis lack lateral movement? Yesterday was the first time I seen him actually make sharp-Reggie-Bush like cuts. If anything is missing from his game, it's that. I'm thinking he doesn't do this anymore now that he's a power back.

Maybe not in the mold of Jacobs, but he's not a scat back anymore like he was in Denver.

Sorry to interject while at work (hope the boss isnt looking)... I never played football (did play other sports), but from watching and studying the game in my 30 years, I have more than a passing understanding.

As does JLA. This blog, and his columns for that mattter, are what a beat reporter does. JLA has seen this team for years, and at its worst.

He continually praises their good work even saying CP is in line for the MVP.

So cj, he has perspective... that which fans dont. our regular season record being 11-5 (as you see it) is only one game better than last year.

With all those things you cite about our offense, we should be much better than one-game better than last year.

Zorn didnt like the way we played, Blache didnt like the way we played.... JLA did like the way we played, I didnt like the way we played.

So while you can criticize all you want, you really shouldnt be happy with that showing, or a one-game better this year showing... we look to have great potential... and yesterday can be considered a step in the wrong direction.

But when our team continually underachieves based upon our players skill (and their salaries to boot), maybe you are a little jaded. Maybe just a little bit better is fine for you.

But dont come off thinking you are more than a fan than anyone else because you think complacency is being a true fan.

Really, it is almost being a puppet.

Now I see everyone is openly mocking me and my comments. How cute. The crude sarcasm, and "jokes" on my behalf are hilarious.

I'm not saying I'm superfan #1, just saying fans shouldn't agree with this guys writing, and most of you are hopping on his bandwagon and are looking for negative things to say. Facts are facts, Skins are 6-2, have already beaten NFC's top 4 offenses, and the season is halfway over. A lot of you seem to think this is the BCS, have fun watching the FL GA game on Sat!

Posted by: cj658 | October 27, 2008 3:20 PM | Report abuse

Again cj...Coach Blache, the guy in charge of the defense, said they played "like the south end of a north-bound skunk."
Yes, their record says they're a top 5 team, but they're not playing like it. Expectations are growing at 6-2. Growing quickly. They'll need to play better if they want to beat better teams and make some serious noise in the, um, uh, games that come after the regular games.

As to what JLC "should" do...this is a blog. It's a place for opinion...his too. You want constant homerisms...there's plenty of 'Skins controlled media in this town that's happy to oblige you.

Zeebs, the Skins were 9-7 last year. 11-5 is a 2 game difference. In today's NFL, that is a HUGE improvement. In case you didn't know the NFL season is 16 games. That's the equivalent of an NBA team wining 10 more games, or a MLB team winning 20 more games. (Do the math). A 2 game improvement with a new HC is dramatic. So go ahead and keep on whining. If we had it your way and LaCanfora's way, we will win our next 8 games by a combined score of 240-0 and go onto the #1 BCS Ranknig! Get a grip man.

Posted by: cj658 | October 27, 2008 3:26 PM | Report abuse

cj - I usually don't call out people on this board - but do you really think other writers for papers in other cities do not criticize their home town team? When I got off of the floor and cleaned the coke that I spit into my keyboard, I had to re-read what you said...

Yup, that's what you said.

Dude, that's what makes the sports journalism world go round - the home team stinks up the joint, makes a stupid trade, does anything and the beat writer tears them a new one, regardless of whether they played the game or didn't.

Hell, three years ago, the Houston Chronicle posted a picture of a tombstone for the Houston Astros in MAY! Funny thing there was, the Astros then made it to the World Series.

Anyway

How much money does Shawn Springs make? Divide by the actual games played and he's probably the highest paid player in the NFL.

He is effective when playing, but man we need him every week.

I don't see this with Jason Taylor, he hasn't proven one thing to me as a Redskin. He looks weak and undersized out there. His run defense is sloppy and his pass rush suspect. He's almost as overpaid as Springs.

Earn your money guys.....you can do it.

Did anyone see Jimmy's rant on Fox about overpaid rookies taking it from the proven veterans? We have deju vu here, a couple overpaid veterans taking it away from the team......

Is the risk worth the reward with Springs moving forward. It is amazing how injury prone one player can be.

Posted by: joeboggs | October 27, 2008 7:17 PM | Report abuse

I think any redskins fan is happy with the record of 6-2 with the flury of injuries and a new coaching staff...BUT we also realize that we DO have to play better and can not just get up for the big games or challenges. When you look at on of the most consistent sports teams (The Spurs) they get up for each game the same way and stay ith in themslves and the system and that is why they have the highest winning percentage of any professional sports team in the last 12 years!

I believe the wear and tear on CP is worse with Betts out but I think once we get a lock on a playoff spot and Betts is back him and Alexander will be getting most of the plays due to rsting portis and letting him heal. That will move rock back to punt returns hopefully and ignite that aspect.

I know we want to down play the steelers game but honestly if we play and play well enough to win its a great booster going into the bye and coming out with having to play Dallas and then the Eagles and Giants!

Last thing I love the record but I think we need to improve...Im happy don't get me wrong but I would rather be scraping by now learning from our mistakes as long as we are actually learning and ending up with a 10-6 record and then blowing people out like dallas and the patriots last year and not coming through when it counts with an 13-3 record or 16-0. I want to be battle tested and healthy going into the playoffs knowing we have been there before...and we can do it again!
