Zorn Praises Campbell's Decision-Making

A day after the Redskins' first offensive unit failed to score a touchdown for the second consecutive preseason game, Jim Zorn downplayed any disappointment in Jason Campbell's performance, concentrating more on the fifth-year quarterback's decision-making process than on the execution of his passes. Campbell, too, said the game plan called for the Redskins to try some deeper throws, including the game-opening play in which Campbell missed second-year receiver Malcolm Kelly on a long post route that was broken up by Steelers safety Troy Polamalu.

"I heard him say it last night," Zorn said Sunday, after he had gone over the film. "He wished he had thrown the first pass further. We always teach the receiver picks his angle, and you've got to throw it to the receiver, and it was just a little off.

"I liked the effort. I'd like more accuracy."

Each Redskins quarterback, particularly in the 18 years since the team last won the Super Bowl, has had his performances picked apart weekly, even in the presesaon. But Campbell enters his third full season as a starter under even more scrutiny given the fact that the Redskins have not signed him to a contract extension, as well as the fact that the club tried to trade for Jay Cutler, then with Denver, and considered trading up in the draft to select Southern California's Mark Sanchez.

Headed into Friday's game against New England -- in which the starting offense will play at least the entire first half, more than in any of the four preseason games -- Campbell has played five series, completed 4 of 13 passes for 48 yards with neither a touchdown nor an interception. He has failed to lead a touchdown drive.

"To me, it's what we have to do -- take shots," Campbell said late Saturday night. "I can't worry about my stats and everything, because we're trying to do something to help us out during the year."

Of Campbell's seven passes, two were screens that he threw away because Pittsburgh, which has one of the league's top defenses, broke up the play. Zorn called those "good decisions," the kind he would like Campbell to make during the regular season rather than have him take an unnecessary risk.

But other throws caused more concern. On the Redskins' opening drive -- after Campbell missed Kelly deep and then threw at the feet of running back Clinton Portis on the first ill-fated screen -- Campbell had plenty of time on a third-and-10 play to find wide receiver Santana Moss over the middle. Moss had a step on his defender, and had the ball been thrown accurately, he would have easily gained a first down. But Campbell threw well over Moss's head. The ball fell incomplete, and the Redskins needed a fake punt to sustain what would end up being a 14-play drive.

"The only throw that I thought was poor was the high throw to Santana Moss for the first down," Zorn said. "Really, he should've just pulled that ball down and we should've got an easy completion. But he'll see. He'll see what the problem is."

A six-yard completion by Campbell to wide receiver Antwaan Randle El was called back because of a penalty, and Campbell's lone completion that counted was a 10-yarder to tight end Chris Cooley on third and 10 that kept the opening possession alive. The last seven plays of the 62-yard drive, which ended in Shaun Suisham's 20-yard field goal, were running plays, including a pair on which backup back Ladell Betts was stuffed inside the Pittsburgh 5 yard line.

"An excellent drive, just what we're looking for," Zorn said. "But we're looking to finish. We had our chance on that drive, too. When we went back to look at it, you just go, 'Oh! If only.' So there's a couple things in there, blocking, that we can improve on, and we'll get it in. We'll get it in."

Zorn opened the second drive by calling another deep shot for Campbell, this one to Moss on the left side. The ball caused Moss to twist as he tried to find it, and it wasn't close to being completed.

"He read Santana going outside," Zorn said of Campbell. "Santana actually came back inside. We've got to communicate better, that's all. It wasn't anything about the throw."

That possession ended with the second broken screen play, this one to Betts. Campbell's final throw of the day was a third-and-3 effort to tight end Fred Davis. Another miscommunication, Zorn said, and another incompletion.

"Fred turned inside and didn't think anybody was inside, so he kept going," Zorn said, "and so [Campbell] tried to throw it to where he was going, and then Fred stopped.
It was sort of like miscommunicating on what each guy was going to do."

so who is to blame for Samuel's knee problem?

I know, Snyderato is to blame. If they hadn't mismanaged their yabadabadoo, Samuels's knee would be in better shape. Also (a la Palin) it is JC's fault since he holds on to the ball too long and strains Samuel's knee, also.

"Make Colt the #1 QB and Samuel's knee will get better" said Redskins Fan base

Guys, I think Redskins need to change their primary yabadabadoo to be more like the Patriots' yabadabadoo.

Yabadabadoo at Fedex field sucks, and it cost too much. Snyder's fault blah blah blah

The Hail with sh*tty management and the same old BS, though..Plenty of rooks rise and shine , why not Chase?? (i'm afraid that a year under this dysfunctional organization may have sapped some steam out of Colt, though please prove me wrong)..This team has the moral equivalent payroll as the NY Yankees, similar ridiculous exploitive prices, perpetually is mediocre under Snyder, and we the fans aren't allowed to b*tch and moan?? What , are you former KGB or something??

So... have they ever tried a "fake" screen pass. Seems to me if there were someone on the outside or in the flat that broke away from the broken play (a Yoder type guy) we'd at least have a look outside of the RB. Although I'm glad those plays didn't turn into turnovers, but I can't say I like plays that are one dimensional and don't have a check down look.

We just want our team to do well, that's all. With the amount of knee-jerk negativity here, it is hard to imagine that these people are actually Redskins fans.

frak,

Also, I liked Chase too and based on those two series, think he may have a future with the Redskins. I assume that the coaches are also looking for talent at back up QB position. And if he continues to perform well, best wishes to him. And may the Redskins nation have the patience to see him grow and mature, before calling for his decapitation after his first incompletion!!!!!

Not that my opinion matters, it doesn't, but I think the 3rd preseason game is the one that matters. The first 2 are just kinda warmups and the 4th game is where the coaches are making the real cuts. The 3rd game is where the starters should have a modicum of rhythm and jelliness and where they play more than a token amount of plays. Just my $.02. I'll be much more worried if JC looks terrible after that game. Interesting that we play 3 good defenses in preseason.

The Redskins this year will last in passing offense but they will "decision make" right into the end zone on every drive. Please. Here's the deal: if Zorn says the decision making is good, but the decisions lead to failed plays, then the play calling is lousy. So what is it? Do we have a crummy quarterback or a crummy coach? I guess it doesn't matter since their futures are so intertwined. They will both be unemployed at the end of the season, and we fans will be saying, "wait until next year".

When was the last time anybody can remember Jason Campbell winning a game for us in the last 2 minutes of the 4th or scoring in the last 2 minutes of the 2nd. It has not happened and it won't happen. It's time for Zorn to admit that Campbell just ain't the guy and to stop complimenting him on stuff that don't matter. Trade him and get an O lineman for him and live or die with Collins, Brennan or Daniels because we certainly will die with Jason Campbell.

Posted by: getitritegov | August 23, 2009 6:19 PM | Report abuse

Actually, now that I think about it, it's time to go with the QB who looks like Dan Fouts and built like Doug Flutie. That's right partners - Chase Daniels.

Stick a fork in Campbell he is done. Come to terms with reality, Collins is much better...more poised...better presence...more accurate passes...better decisions. Let's cut to the chase and start Collins and start looking for a new quarterback in the draft. Cheers.

MP.. To pick JC in 2005, Snyder gave up a 1st rounder (two if you actually count the one he used to pick JC), and a 3rd and 4th round pick (the last one Denver used to pick future WR star, Brandon Marshall.
So, if Snyder is still trying to trade JC until the trading deadline in October, so he gets something for the HUGE investment before it walks off into Free Agency...Look for JC to Start no matter how poorly he does in preseason. Maybe JC knows this..

If JC is not starting.. then Snyder will see a much worse offer then he saw during the winter when he was trying to peddle this QB that nobody wanted for more than a 3rd round pick according to NFL.Com.

I am not saying JC is tanking on purpose.. Just that he seems to act as if he is not competing for his job. The attitude comes across in his play and interviews.

Zorn doesn't see the big picture ive herd on the NFL radio.. Campbell doesn't posess the abilty to read the defense and his 3rd and 4th reads. Let Colt or Daniels start this week with the first team and watch the outcome. Skins will not be a contender until Zorn or Campbell are out of the picture. Synder better interven soon

Snyder needs to step in as usual and get Campbell out of there now. If we start the season with this joker again with all the talent on this team we will end up last in the division again... Please give us some hope in a new QB. Just rember a few years back when Campbell went down and the skins went to the playoffs
