A Castle Isn't Always Enough Protection

From Cherie Blair, a fruitful anecdote. (Reuters/Mario Anzuoni)

Today's lesson in unplanned parenthood comes from Cherie Blair, wife of former British prime minister Tony Blair and author of a new memoir, "Speaking for Myself." During her first official visit to the Queen's Balmoral Castle in Scotland, Blair was mortified when a lady's maid unpacked her travel bag and carefully laid everything -- including her contraceptives -- on the dressing table. When the Blairs were invited back the following year, Cherie (then 44) left the "unmentionables" at home.

It got chilly in their bedroom and ... nine months later, baby Leo was born. "I always thought it was God laughing at me," she told the audience yesterday at the Aspen Institute.
