Just Coincidental Name Confusion?
A Hager in Virginia endorsing Barack Obama? As in Jenna Bush Hager's in-laws?
That was the impression left with some Virginians who got warm, folksy robo-calls from one "Liz Hager," who explained that after years of supporting moderate Republicans, she was splitting from her party to back the Democrat because of his abortion rights policies. The calls were paid for by NARAL Pro-Choice America.
Hager is a familiar Virginia name: John Hager, whose son Henry wed the president's daughter in May, is a former lieutenant governor and recent state GOP chairman. But his wife is Maggie. And Liz is ... a GOP state legislator from New Hampshire.
Not a known quantity in Virginia. So why was she working the phones here? "Because she's a Republican who has come out publicly for Barack Obama," said NARAL political director Elizabeth Shipp, adding that Hager, a board member, was used for calls in "several" states. "There was never any intention to tie Liz to John Hager."
