The VP Shopping Spree: Two Budgets, One Look

Gov. Sarah Palin (David McNew/Getty Images)

After hearing that the GOP dropped $75,062.63 at Neiman Marcus to outfit Sarah Palin, The Reliable Source raced up there yesterday for a shopping spree of our own: something expensive, tasteful and, well, vice-presidential. (Yes, you can spend $75K in a couple hours.) Then we went across the street to Loehmann's to see if we could find something similar for a hockey mom's budget.

Neiman's total (with tax): $11,965.63

vs.

Loehmann's total (with tax): $438.81

FROM LOEHMANN'S: Anne Klein suit: $119.99

FROM NEIMAN MARCUS: Nancy Gonzalez crocodile purse: $3,325

FROM LOEHMANN'S: Michael Kors purse: $199.99

FROM NEIMAN MARCUS: Manolo Blahnik patent leather peep-toe pumps: $695; Konstantino gold and silver earrings ($1,390) and bracelet ($2,525).

FROM LOEHMANN'S: Tahari patent leather pumps: $59.99; Carolee imitation gold earrings ($19.99) and Cara imitation gold bracelet ($14.99).

She is so disingenuous and a hypocrite. She, not Barack, is the greatest risk to our safety and well being as a nation. This woman is dangerous, superficial and worse, ignorant. Please make her go away.

Carol said it all. She is an ignorant hypocrite. No ordinary soccer mom spend this kind of money on clothing and it's a disgrace that the Republican National Committee squandered money that could have been used for better causes.

A wolf in Neiman Marcus clothing.

you people are the hypocrites. you love the fact
that nancy "raise their taxes" pelosi wears armani
but are shocked that sarah would go to neiman's.
like she has time to got to loehmannn's and dig through
racks. if she did shop at discount places, you would
be laughing at her for that. you guys are truly contemptible.

The difference is that Sarah Palin's outfits were purchased for her by the RNC while Nancy Pelosi spends her own money to buy Armani. Like her politics or not, she works hard for that money. I work hard for my money, too - but I couldn't even afford the Loehmann's outfit.

I wonder how many advertisements the Neiman Marcus suits prevented the McCain campaign from airing in toss-up states...

Get a life! It's a campaign expense. It's a drop in the bucket compared to what the Obama campaign is spending but we'll never know what that money went for (or where it came from) because he doesn't release information - like his college records, actual birth certificate, true relationship with homegrown terrorists and thugs. Don't get me started.

PS: Who would EVER take seriously a woman in a red ruffled suit. Not even a close comparison.

How much did the DNC pay for Michelle's wardrobe? No one can answer because it is like everything else with Senator Obama - a secret.

Let's put this in perspective. In the 70's I was a buyer for the Georgetown University Shop in Georgetown. We outfitted George McGovern for his presidential bid and sold him about 15 Norman Hilton suits that averaged about $600 each in 1972. No one said anything about him being extravagant

Palin did release her relationship with a domestic subversive (potential terrorist)-she married him. We are still waiting for all 5 transcripts.

Did this money come out of my pocket? Since Sen. McCain took "public" financing for his campaign, do these "expenses," much like the hairdressers and make-up experts, come out of public funds?

If so, I want my money back. I don't pay taxes to put Neiman-Marcus clothes on Gov. Palin's back. Somehow, I don't think that Jill Biden is wearing frocks from Neiman, so it must be a Republican thing. Or maybe this is why she said "yes" to McCain for the Titanic ticket after everyone else took a pass.

As a mere man, I was struck by the juxtaposition of Ms. Givhan's article on Palin's wardrobe with the RelSourc choices of the expensive outfit with a respectably-priced outfit: Is there a possibility you could have models put on both the outfits, take photos and maybe a WashPost video, and have Robin Givhan comment on the degree of "attractiveness", "cheapness" or whatever variables (you) women measure these things on?

I sent this to Robin Givhan and to Roberts/Artsinger. I am interested in seeing comments, too. (Please note I have no political axe to grind in this idea.)

My point exactly. McCain/Palin release their info. Obama-Biden don't.
FYI Palin, as commander of the only national guard unit in the country on 24 hour active duty, has a higher security rating than either Obama or McCain. There has never been a more suspect, ill experienced candidate for presidency than BO. He's not cool as some think, he's inexperienced -- sitting back and waiting for his team of "advisors" to tell him what to say.
