This Just In: Levi Johnston Quits Job Amid Qualification Questions

Levi and Bristol at the Republican convention in September. (Paul Sancya/AP)

Levi Johnston, the fiance of Sarah Palin's daughter, has quit his oil field job amid questions over how he got the electrical apprenticeship without a high school diploma, the Anchorage Daily News reported. An Alaska radio talk-show host had raised the issue, suggesting that the governor might have helped him. Palin denied it, and Johnston's father told reporters it was his own work with the contractor that helped the 18-year-old get the job. Still, Keith Johnston said he advised his son to resign and start working on his GED. Johnston's fiancee, Bristol Palin, also 18, gave birth to their son, Tripp, last month.

With so many people looking for work, how did high-school-dropout Levi land an electrical apprentice position without meeting the minimum requirement - a high school diploma? Could it be that Sarah Palin, known for cronyism and corruption, arranged the position to get Levi out of town? Despite all the claims during Sarah's vice-presidential campaign that Levi would marry Bristol, Sarah already knew that Levi's mother was to be arrested for narcotic sales. How would it look for Bristol's mother-in-law to be a convicted felon? Levi may not be the marrying type, but he'll probably be set for life if he elopes with the governor's daughter. There's no end in sight to the misadventures of this dysfunctional family.

Levi had a job?

For God's sake Washington Post leave these people alone. The GOP lost. This is not news. I doubt seriously if you would be reporting on any rumors about the Biden grandchildren. Your ombudsman was right.

This is getting old!! How 'bout we talk about somebody else's kids? How 'bout AL GORE??

Remember he had a daughter that was arrested for participating in an under-age drinking party in Bethesda??? Remember his son was arrested while leaving the Outer Banks NC?? Remember his son who was arrested for speeding in CA?? WITH A PRIUS!! Remember his son who was arrested for drug possession??

Let's pick on another politician's kids!!!

Lola222, what on earth do the teenage foibles of Al Gore's kids five or 10 years ago have to do with the alleged abuse of office and cronyism displayed by Sarah Palin (herself, not her kids) right NOW? She has and will continue to have a national political profile, and if she in fact did pull strings to get her future son-in-law a job despite his lack of qualifications -- well, sorry, but that's newsy!

"Johnston's father told reporters it was his own work with the contractor that helped the 18-year-old get the job. Still, Keith Johnston said he advised his son to resign and start working on his GED."

What Levi Johnston does is not newsworthy.

The people on the left who continually take cheap shots at this kid and Bristol Palin are pathetic and a sad example of how we've totally lost any concept of civilized disagreement.

The Democrats are no better than the Republicans. Let me repeat that- the Democrats are no better than the Republicans when it comes to this crap.

And when it comes to Sarah Palin, it's fascinating to watch the Democrats do sexism. There's a word for it...hypocrisy.

I hope Obama follows through on his promise to bring people together because it's long overdue that the whack, extremist elements of both the Republican and Democratic party are marginalized into irrelevance. Right now, there's way too many of them polluting the air waves and choking up these message boards.

Those of you who rant that this is not news are entirely correct...which is why this is posted in the GOSSIP column.

I agree with mic2, this blurb is right where it belongs, in with the death of the Bush family cat. Except for the overtones of nepotism, which make it a bigger story.

Part of the reason folks will focus on the Palin's is the blatant double standard the republican party had in using Sarah Palin. There were a number of issues with Palin that were not openly discussed which appaled people on both the right and left sides.

Everyone knows that the Palin's in the midst of a teen pregnancy, husband with no job and no college degree did not live up to the normal standards of the typical judgmental party. they defied all standards for American leadership. Everyone knows what the Palin's would be referred to if it wasn't politically correct.

I don't think Palin is as bad as she was portrayed, but she knowingly allowed her self and family to be exploited. this is just further ramifications of what she decided to do 6 months ago. You cannot tell me she or someone did not know her potential mother-in-law was not dealing drugs. You can't dismiss you 16-year old as being an old spirit when discussing her pregnancy. you cannot simply say oh we have problems too when you are proposing to be the 2nd in command in america, guiding our nation's future after George Bush and your daughter and supposed son-in-law are high school dropouts!

In truth, it more than this one kid in an apprentice program without the prerequisites. now his association with the Palins is just another whammy!

Didn't Bristol and Levi receive $300K for Tigger's baby pictures? That should be more than enough to keep Levi in Carhartt's, flannel shirts and PBR for at least a couple of years.

Question for DOTELLEN. The death of the Bush family cat had overtones of nepotism?

Next Levi will want to be appointed Senator!

Sheesh! I knew things were tough for the GOP but for their otherwise respectable followers to get all shirty over a gossip piece about this Johnston punk is a bit much. How many of you Levi defenders would even let him on your property, let alone into your house? ("Hi mom, it's me. Um, I met this guy on my trip to Alaska who's a high school dropout, knocked up a local politician's daughter, scammed his way into his job, and his mom is a drug dealer. Do you mind if I bring him over to dinner tonight?" "No problem, honey! He sounds like an All-American boy! Hope he likes lobster!")

Palin's daughter is on the path to having multiple God loving children by multiple partners. If not for the income earning potential of Levi due to his connection to a governors daughter more than likely he would be on his way spreading his love seed all over Alaska, but that is what good God fearing Christians are supposed to do right?
Levi Johnston and Bristol Palin should be considered fodder for the Darwin Awards in 2009.

Are we giving Sarah Palin's spawn a "hard time"? How about her racist rants at every campaign stop, calling Malia & Sasha's father a terrorist? Didn't she think that would affect those kids? No, she didn't give a rat's hindquarters, and I - for one - am thrilled at every opportunity to berate this trailer park crew! Hey, is the baby-daddy's drug dealing mama getting out of jail for the christnening?

HOW ABOUT A LIST OF EACH OF YOUR CHILDREN AND WHAT THEY ARE DOING WITH THEIR LIVES???

Lola222's comment is instructive in understanding the politics of victimization practiced by the Republican/Conservative element. Her sense of the need to protect her 'unfairly treated' Levi Johnston is, I believe, a respresentation of her actual emotions.

As she points out, Levi is not the first young adult with a connection to a current or former politician with some bad behavior in his record.

Now, here's the question -- how did Lola222 find out about those other young adults? I know I read all about their misbehavior in the Washington Post. So when I see Levi Johnson's behavior mentioned in the Post, I think that's fair.

But for a Republican/Conservative, it's not viewed as relevant -- there was no
mention of Al Gore's children IN THE SAME EDITION of the Post in which Levi's little problem was mentioned. Ergo, in her mind, there is no fairness.

Any news that reflects badly on a Republican/Conservative is viewed as unfair propoganda by people like Lola222.
Hence, reporting the seamy facts on Larry Craig, Jack Abramoff selling access to Karl Rove for $100,000; the Dusty Foggo/Duke Cunningham poker 'n' prostitutes parties at the Watergate where a few hours of corrupt behavior was traded for earmarks in legislation worth tens or
hundreds of millions -- well, mentioning those facts in the media just proves that the media is biased, to Lola222.

Poor little Levi benefits from sale of baby pictures -- that's OK, because he 'suffered' by having his life made public. He gets a job he's not qualified for, then loses it when the facts become public? Not news, if you think anything bad about a Republican is not fair game.

Sarah Palin ought to get a neglectful parent of the year award for not knowing what sort of moron her daughter was having sex with. Also for not talking with her daughter about birth control. Maybe she thought Jesus was enough B/C for her daughter. How can this hillbilly of a woman have ever been considered VP material? Worse, 40+ percent of Americans voted for her. If America ends up in the compost heap of history, we can thank hillbillies, Jesus freaks, and the politicians who pander to them.

Now if this would have happened 5 years ago Karl Rove and Rush Drugball would have been able to cover this up but I guess the good old days are gone.

This is absolutely not news and shouldn't be of much, if any, interest to many. However, should Levi and Bristol ever finally get married that would be news but I guess we know that's not about to happen or would have by now.
